ANNA KARÉNINA. In Eight Parts. Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole

New York: Thomas Y. Crowell and Co., 1886 Tolstoy, Leo. ANNA KARÉNINA. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell and Co., 1886. True First Edition, Early Issue. In Eight Parts. [publisher's monogram on the title-page]. Translated by Nathan Haskell Dole. Publisher's, original dark brown cloth [the book was issued in blonde brown, blue, & green, with no established priority), spine & the front panel gilt with gilt Imperial House of Romanov seal, light green leaf-designed endpapers. 8vo., 773 pp. with the four pages of advertisements. Six titles without Anna K listed on the page facing the title page. First printing, early issue of the First American Edition, & First English Language Printing preceding the First British Edition. A near fine exceptionally bright example which would be a spectacular copy would it not be for some minor bumping & soiling to the outside front margin of the back cover which has been expertly retouched by our conservator. Contents clean & free of blemish. A very nice copy of this uncommon early issue of this literary classic which was first published serially in the original Russian in 1873 & first published in book form, Moscow, 1878. [Line, p. 36]. Custom clamshell collector's clamshell case in fine condition. A curious bibliography, the page facing the title page shows a printed list of books by Tolstoi "available" from Crowell, including Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth; Ivan Ilyitch; My Religion; My Confession; What to Do?, & The Invaders; Childhood was published separately by Crowell 1886, Ivan Ilyitch 1886, My Religion [Trans. as "What I Believe"] published by Crowell in 1885, Three titles: My Confession, What to Do, & The Invaders were all published in 1887 & it is likely that Crowell anticipated publication of these titles. Post 1887 titles do not appear on this list & of the dozen or more copies examined, all had this listing format, generally recognized as the correct first edition format for an early issue - it is likely that the very first issue had no later titles, only the titles printed. Either way, the book is quite uncommon especially in nice condition as copies offer for sale are generally quite used & show considerable wear. Ads at rear include a list of Russian translations from Crowell including Crime and Punishment [1886, no blurbs shown] Injury and Insult and Recollections of a Dead-House [shown as 'in press', not yet published, but although published in London 1886, no Crowell edition located, no blurbs/reviews shown], Anna Karenina [1886, two reviews], My Religion, published as What I Believe in 1885 by Crowell [New York Sun review], Childhood Boyhood Youth, Crowell 1886, three reviews, Gogol's Taras Bulba [Crowell 1886, two reviews], St John's Eve, [Crowell 1886, no reviews], also Tchernuishevsky's A Vital Question [Crowell 1886] with three reviews & Dupuy's Great Masters of Russian Literature [1886] with one review; Full page advertisements for Joseph Roux's Meditations of a Parish Priest with a blurb from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine; a full page ad for Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, published by Crowell October 1886, & showing blurbs from the Sept 1886 Harper's Weekly, Boston Traveller & undated ads from The Athenaeum & The Spectator. The final page ad for The Marquis of Peñalta by Don Armando Palacio Valdes with one long review from Harper's Monthly.. First Edition.

However after the death of his sister in 1874 Waite was drawn to spiritualism and from there to theosophy, alchemy and the occult. Alphonse Louis Constant (Eliphas Levi) was little known outside of France until he was quoted extensively by Blavatsky in 'Isis Unveiled'. It was this that led Waite to begin a translation of Levi's major work, eventually suggesting to the Theosophist A.P. Sinnet that he produce an anthology of Levi's writings. Sinnet introduced Waite to the publisher George Redway and so Waite began his long association with Redway., 8vo 8" - 9" tall, xliii [i] 349 [3] pp .

Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

NY: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1886. First edition, which preceded the London edition by three days. This classic tale of dual personalities, and the duality of good and evil within each human being, has captured the imagination of readers for generations. The story was made into a play almost immediately after the book's release, and it has been adapted into numerous films beginning in 1908. Actors such as Richard Mansfield, John Barrymore, and Spencer Tracy have taken on the Jekyll/Hyde role, embracing its challenging exploration of the human psyche. In scarce original yellow wrappers; spine and edge of covers have faded to tan, minor chipping at extremities, else a very fine copy of a quite fragile book. Housed in a black cloth chemise and in gold-colored morocco slipcase. An excellent copy of this high-spot in literature, which is rare in this condition.

Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The

London: Longmans, Green, 1886. First Edition. Cloth. Fine. Small, slim 8vo: [8],141,[1]pp, printed by Spottiswoode and Co, New-Street Square, London. Late nineteen-century maroon cloth, spine lettered and tooled in gilt, brown end papers, all edges marbled, bound without the final advertisement leaf (as often) for the second edition of "A Child's Garden of Verses." Fine, save for light rubbing to joints. First British Edition, published 9 January 1886 (four days after the U.S. edition) in both salmon-colored cloth and beige paper wrappers. Our copy is probably a bind-up, in period cloth, of the paperbound issue. Handsome bookplate of James J. Waring affixed to front paste down (Waring, first full-time professor of medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, donated books from his personal collection that became the basis of the University's Waring History of Medicine Collection). Prideaux 17. Haycraft Queen Cornerstone. Stevenson's novella, the "prototype of all stories of multiple personality, transformation and possession" (Encyclopedia of Science Fiction), deals with Dr. Henry Jekyll's attempts to isolate man’s dual nature. The tale "is not simply a gruesome story of ghastly deeds in the fog-bound streets of Victorian London, but also an unsettling study of the unstable nature of social and psychological identity. . . . In presenting Jekyll and Hyde as two aspects of the same person, as inseparable and mutually dependent personalities within the same mind and body, the transformation represents a potent dramatisation of the masks worn by members of respectable Victorian society to hide the hypocrisy that was always present in their everyday lives. . . . The novel [also taps] into a deeper source of fin de siècle anxiety regarding the fear of racial degeneration, calling into question the very nature of social behaviour by enacting the return of the repressed savage which, it implies, is still present in every one of us. . . . To Victorian readers, such a suggestion carried an especial resonance. Since the late 1850s, Darwin’s formulation of the origin of mankind not by divine providence, but through the more haphazard process of natural selection had posed a serious challenge to the idea of humanity as a race set apart from the brutes, by suggesting that its development was governed by the same laws as that of apparently lesser creatures. . . . The use of a fantastic metamorphosis to dramatise a return of the repressed in order to emphasise the unstable and transient nature of dominant notions of civilized behaviour and conventions is also a fundamental characteristic of the gothic revival in late-Victorian literature – and Stevenson’s novella is regarded as a central text in the study of that movement." THE ADVENTURES OF GIL BLAS OF SANTILLANA

William Paterson Edinburgh: William Paterson, 1886. 248 x 165 mm (9 3/4 x 6 1/2").Three volumes. Translated by Henri Van Laun, with an introduction, notes, and a life of the author. QUITE PLEASING THREE-QUARTER VELLUM over sturdy textured cloth boards BY TOUT (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), flat spines heavily gilt in compartments in antique style featuring large and intricate central fleuron, three brown morocco labels on each spine, marbled end papers, gilt tops. Title vignettes and 21 fine etched plates (including frontispiece portrait in first volume) by Adolphe Lalauze. Large, attractive engraved bookplate of Hilda Leyel signed "A M H 1940" in each volume. Top corners of volume I slightly bumped, turn-ins a little spotted (trivial spots and superficial marks elsewhere to covers and spines, particularly to the labels), otherwise an excellent set, with no significant wear, and with the gilt still bright and attractive. Slight offsetting from plates, but very fine internally. This is a finely bound, well printed, and attractively illustrated edition of Le Sage's great satirical picaresque romance, which appeared originally in 1715-35. The very appealing plates here are characterized by rich and charming details of personal adornment, household furnishings, and objects from everyday life, and the interiors especially have a design, depth, and realism that are impressive. Lalauze (1838-1906) was a major figure in what Ray describes as a revival of etching as an art form in France. This revival was partly stimulated by the founding of an etcher's society, and the renewed interest in etching was carried into book illustration by a number of publishers who specialized in luxury editions. Executed by a first-rate binder, our set in elaborately gilt vellum with morocco labels is unusual in design and at the same time unusually pleasing. Previous owner Hilda Leyel (1880-1957) was a noted herbalist and devoted student of Nicholas Culpeper's 17th century work on medicinal plants, which she used as a source for her book, "The Magic of Herbs," publisihed in 1926.

The result of this combination of one of the most English of artists with one of the most American of authors will be awaited with unusual interest" (The Nation, Vol. 43, No. 1102, August 12, 1886, p. 138).The Queen of the Pirate Isle is a short story set in and around a mining camp in gold-rush California - a milieu that features in almost all of Bret Harte's work. The four young protagonists - imaginative Polly (the "Queen"), her cousin Hickory Hunt, their Chinese "page" Wan Lee, and neighbor-boy Patsey - are all children, have extremely vivid imaginations, and Harte relates their adventures playing pirate - in fantasy, dream, and reality.Bret Harte lived in London from the 1880s through his death in 1902. Lady Alfred Paget, née Cecilia Wyndham (1830-1914) "a woman of remarkable intellectual powers" (NY Times obituary, May 4, 1914), was a lady in waiting to Queen Victoria (who was godmother to one of the Paget children), and owned Chateau Garibondy on the Riviera in the south of France where she entertained royalty and the intellectual cream of Great Britain. She likely met Harte at one of his popular London lectures, always attended by a distinguished audience.BAL 7337. Sharnhorst 902. Schuster and Engen 165.1f.
