THE WORLD'S GREATEST IMPORTING ESTABLISHMENT. MAIN BARNS OF THE HOLBERT HORSE IMPORTING CO. A.S. HOLBERT, PROPRIETOR. GREELEY, DELAWARE COUNTY, IOWA. [caption title]

Milwaukee, WI: The Gugler Litho. Co, 1885. Color lithograph, 19 x 27 in. image, on a 24 x 32 in. sheet. The several barns of the Holbert Horse Importing Company are shown, the roofs and walls lettered with advertisements for their services as importers of Percherons, Belgians, and English Shires, as well as suppliers of draft, coach and hackney horses. In the yard in front of the barns groups of horses stand with their red shirted trainers, potential buyers in top hats and bowlers peruse the stock. A nice bright image. Aaron B. Holbert (1853- established his horse breeding and importing business in Greeley, Iowa in 1878. The enterprise grew to have an international reputation in the field of breeding and selling registered horses in the United States. [see Capt. John Merry's "History of Delaware County, Iowa," [Chicago: 1914], v.1, pp.281-2] Henry Gugler and his son Julius joined the firm of Henry Seifert in Milwaukee in 1872, taking charge of the lithography department and bringing the first steam power press to Milwaukee, according to Jay Last in his "The Color Explosion: Nineteenth-Century American Lithography," [Santa Ana, CA: 2005], pp.88-9. They formed their own firm of H. Gugler & Son in Milwaukee in 1878, and when Henry died in 1883, Julius and his brothers created Gugler Lithographic Company. No listings found on OCLC.

        The Water-Babies: A Fairy Tale for a Land-Baby.

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1885. New Edition, with one hundred illustrations by Linley Sambourne. Square octavo. Original blue cloth, gilt titles and illustrations to spine and front cover, publisher's device blocked in blind to rear cover, black coated endpapers, gilt edges. Text within single ruled frame. With 100 illustrations. Bookbinder's ticket to rear pastedown. Spine lightly faded and gently rolled, slight rubbing to extremities, most notably at spine ends, short scratch to front cover, inner hinges cracked but holding; a very good copy. First edition with Sambourne's illustrations. Inscribed by the author's widow, Frances Eliza Kingsley, on the half-title, "Frederick Thorne, in memoriam Charles Kingsley, Dec. 1885, F.E.K.". Charles Kingsley died in January 1875, Frances continuing to publish his works, including four volumes of pious selections from his writings. The Water-Babies was first published in 1863 and initiated the first golden age of children's books in England: he "was the first writer in England, perhaps the first in the world, except for H. C. Andersen, to discover that a children's book can be the perfect vehicle for an adult's most personal and private concerns … it was quite different from anything else written for children … in a small space, it managed to discover and explore almost all the directions that children's books would take over the next 100 years" (Carpenter, Secret Gardens).

CONGO AND THE FOUNDING OF ITS FREE STATE: A Story of Work and Exploration

London Sampson Low, Marston, Searle and Rivington 1885 - 2 volumes. First edition. Illustrated with a profusion of black and white illustrations throughout, both full-page and in the text as well as with fold-out maps including large folding maps in the pockets of the rear of the books. 8vo, publisher’s elaborately decorated pictorial brown cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt and black on the covers and spines. xxvii, 528; x, 483, Index, 32 ads. pp. A very handsome and bright set of this elusive first edition, very well preserved indeed. Some very minor evidence of age or use, but unusually pleasing set of these heavy well produced books. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF STANLEY’S IMPORTANT AND POPULAR WORK ON THE FOUNDING OF THE CONGO FREE STATE. This two-volume work of exploration, history, and socio-political-economy is the result of Stanley's expedition up the Congo River in1879-84 and his attempts to re-open the interior for King Leopold of Belgium. From this journey came the establishment of the Congo State, the first free commericial state in Equatorial Africa. Henry Stanley was one of the most popular figures of the 19th Century. Adventurer, explorer and rescuer-- the public could not get enough of this romantic figure. In true Victorian style, this volume highlights his greatest achievements, his rescues of LIvingstone and Emin Pasha and his aid in establishing the Congo Free State. Sets of this important work in original cloth have become exceeding difficult to obtain. First English editions are now especially elusive. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

OLD-WORLD IDYLLS. [with] AT THE SIGN OF THE LYRE

London: Kegan Paul, Trench & Co, 1885, 1886. n. These are aesthetically appealing volumes by a poet of the Aesthete School, described by Day as a "genteel bureaucrat" who specialized in "the graceful insouciance of 'vers de société' rather than the 'flowers of evil'" favored by others of his cohort. Specifically, Henry Austin Dobson (1840-1921) wrote light, witty verse that reflected his fascination with the 18th century; Day notes that "he could write heroic couplets with much of Pope's conversational ability" and "could reproduce the elaborate French stanzas" of triolet, ballade, and rondeau with a finesse matched by few Englishmen. Dobson's extensive knowledge of the 18th century was so respected that DNB says "any publisher intending to reissue an eighteenth-century work went to Dobson for an introduction." We have been unable to identify the binder "S. E. H.," but that artisan's taste and talent are self-evident here in a binding with which most professionals would be quite satisfied.. 159 x 102 mm. (6 1/4 x 4"). Two volumes. VERY ATTRACTIVE DARK GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT (stamp-signed "S. E. H. February 23, 1907" on front turn-ins), covers bordered by double gilt rules with tulip cornerpieces, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments tooled with gilt curls and tulips, gilt titling, turn-ins with plain and decorative gilt rules and volute cornerpieces, brown silk endleaves, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. In a (slightly rubbed) suede-lined and morocco-lipped marbled paper slipcase. Lyre with engraved frontispiece and endpiece. A few spots of faint foxing to the two plates, faint browning at edges because of paper stock, otherwise A VERY FINE SET, clean and smooth internally, and in lustrous, unworn bindings. These are aesthetically appealing volumes by a poet of the Aesthete School, described by Day as a "genteel bureaucrat" who specialized in "the graceful insouciance of 'vers de société' rather than the 'flowers of evil'" favored by others of his cohort.         Collection of gift books with fringe bindings

Various, 1885. A collection of approximately 80 gift books and gift cards with fringe bindings, bound in paper wrappers with chromolithograph images, many over gilt backgrounds, the majority of them very good with occasional condition issues, including worn fringe, a few with water stains, and chipping and loss to spines. The collection includes approximately 36 books (i. e. more than 4 pages). Many with original printed paper folders and one in the original clamshell box. Accompanied by an assortment of 45 fringed cards for holidays and for mourning. A few titles duplicated but under different imprints. The use of silk fringe in the binding of gift books was a short-lived fad at the end of the 19th century. This collection serves as an excellent survey of this publishing phenomenon.         (Broadside): Enlightened Party. October 1, 1885

Fitchburg, Mass.(?): , 1885-1887. Fitchburg, Mass.(?). 1885-1887. First. Approximately 9" x 14.5". Old folds with neat professional reinforcement at the folds on the verso, small chips and tears in the margins, mostly at the corners, a sound and very good example. Interesting political broadside from a little-known and relatively short-lived progressive party that was interested in printing money in order to buy land for poor people between the towns of Fitchburg and Leominster in order to make it a single city. The dating of the broadside is a little confusing: dated in 1885, but then mentions meetings in 1886 and 1887, the one in 1887 seemingly anticipates a meeting in October of 1887. One statement notes: "Our party point and plan is to improve, strengthen, and build up the government and remove the burden of taxes from the people, and ever stand ready to receive any good move come before them, and have women a chance to vote."         Packaging gastronomico-librario del secolo XIX) (EHI! CH’AL SCUSA.) STRENNA PER L’ANNO 1886 – EHI! CH’AL SCUSA. ANNO V

(Zitat) Versand D: 7,00 EUR Autograph; Musik; Signatur; Theater

In 1874-5 Muntz left the firm and J.D.A. Mensing became a partner. Three years later Rahn left. "Late in 1886, Stecher bought out Mensing and the firm became Stecher Lithographic Company. Stecher. was a leader in the chromolithographic industry in Rochester. An 1888 guide to the industries of Rochester noted that the firm employed 100 people and had machinery valued at $125,000" (K.S. Kabelac `Nineteenth-Century Rochester Fruit and Flower Plates' in The University of Rochester Library Bulletin (1982), vol.XXXV, p. 103).         QUARTETTE, The Christmas Annual of the Civil & Military Gazette, 1885.

Lahore:: The "Civil and Military Gazette" Press,. 1885.. First edition. "By Four Anglo-Indian Writers" -- i.e., Rudyard Kipling; his parents, John and Alice; and his sister, Beatrice. According to Kipling, in the winter cold "we four made up a Christmas annual called QUARTETTE, which pleased us a good deal and attracted a certain amount of attention" (Something of Myself, 1937). One of Kipling's earliest publications, produced when he was just 20 years old. Of the sixteen prose and verse pieces included herein, Kipling contributes five poems and three stories. Only two of the stories, "The Phantom 'Rickshaw" and "The Unlimited 'Draw' of 'Tick' Boileau," were later collected elsewhere; the rest were never reprinted. As his third work was only issued in an edition of one copy, this is actually Kipling's third obtainable book. In original paperwraps with small hole in rear blank, two small holes in margins of rear cover filled in, and bottom of front cover just beginning to separate. Still, nearly fine. Housed in custom cloth and paper chemise and full red leather, double top-loading slipcase lettered in gilt on spine. Marbled paper covered interior section of case worn on open edge and outer casing a little rubbed. Rare in original wraps. Richards A4. .

Nathaniel Hawthorne and His Wife A Biography

London: Chatto and Windus. Very Good. 1885. First British Edition. Hardcover. 2 vols pages; Publisher's blue-green diced cloth, spines lettered in gilt, covers with a plain ruled border (in black on the front covers and in blind on the rear), dark brown endpapers. A nice set, with wear confined to a couple of points at the bottom edge of each spine, and two faint dents to the fore edges of the covers of the first volume -- suggesting that it had once been tied with string. The first British edition of this standard biography of Nathaniel Hawthorne by his son Julian Hawthorne [1846-1934] -- writer, journalist (and convicted con man ... but that is not relevant to the matter at hand). This copy has ownership inscriptions neatly written in ink at the top margin of each title page: "Edward Lear. Nov. 20th, 1884 / Villa Tennyson. Sanremo" The signatures are quite distinctive, unmistakable as having been written by the great Edward Lear [1812-1888] -- English artist, illustrator, musician, poet, limerick writer and author of the great "Book of Nonsense" and subsequent publications of a similar nature. Lear traveled extensively, to Greece and Egypt during 1848–49, India and Ceylon during 1873–75, and finally settled in Liguria along the Mediterranean coast, in Sanremo [usually spelled "San Remo" by speakers of English in the nineteenth century]. Lear was deeply fond of Tennyson, whose poems he had a life long desire to illustrate. Lear named his first villa in San Remo the "Villa Emily," after Tennyson's wife. When a growing tide of tourism in San Remo led to the construction of a grand hotel immediately next door to Lear's first Villa, Lear found his light blocked and privacy compromised. So he had another similar Villa built, naming the replacement after the great poet himself -- Villa Tennyson. There are tantalizing currents which seem likely to have connected Edward Lear with Nathaniel Hawthorne. Both wrote books for children at about the same time which will live forever, of course. Both men traveled in Italy -- Lear and Hawthorne were both guests at the villa of the American sculptor William Wetmore Story in Rome (but perhaps not at the same time). An early owner of this set, perhaps Edward Lear, has creased the corner of one leaf -- (the text on the verso contains an account of how Hawthorne disliked winter in England, entirely unlike the clear and brilliant, albeit cold, winters he remembered in New England. Edward Lear, who spent most of his life chasing the sun, must have agreed). Julian Hawthorne was born in 1846, the same year that Edward Lear wrote and published 'A Book of Nonsense,' the volume of limericks through which his name will live forever. Nathaniel Hawthorne had already written several books, but he joined the immortals of literature for children in 1851, with 'A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys' -- followed by a sequel, 'Tanglewood Tales for Boys and Girls.' There is one last twist of the tenuous connection, as Julian Hawthorne's daughter Hildegarde Hawthorne [1871-1952] wrote a charming life of Edward Lear for "St. Nicholas" magazine [Hawthorne, Hildegarde. “Edward Lear.” St. Nicholas: A Monthly Magazine for Boys and Girls, Volume XLIV, part I, November 1916 – April 1917, pp. 71-3.] Edward Lear died at his San Remo Villa Tennyson in 1888. (A frequent guest at the grand hotels whose existence irritated Lear was Alfred Nobel, who bought a villa in Sanremo in 1891 and died there in 1896). It should also be noted that these two volumes include transcripts of letters from the subject's some-time friend and near-neighbor, Herman Melville -- one of the comparatively small number of publications of Melville letters issued during his lifetime. The Melville material here includes two famous letters from 1851 concerning "The Whale" (dedicated by Melville to Nathaniel Hawthorne) -- see vol I, pp. 398-407. .
