McLear & Kendall, Carriage Manufacturers, Corner of Ninth and Kings Streets, Wilmington, Del. -216, 281, 220 North Broad Street, Philadelphia Pa. -Corner of Meeting and Worth Sts, Charleston, S.C.

1 sheet. Broadside. 19th century broadside advertising twenty-nine different models of carriages from a "Small business Rockaway" to a elaborate "Five-glass Landau, " all around a central image of the Wilmington factory, the first steam-powered carriage plant built in the United States, in 1864, and capable of turning out over 1500 carriages a year. Originally founded by John Merrick, in 1830, the company was acquired by Henry C. McLear and Casper Kendall at the time of the construction of the new plant, nearly half an acre in size, with showrooms on the first floor and manufacturing facilities on the three above, and employing 150 skilled craftsmen. Prices are noted in pencil next to four models. OCLC locates no copies of this broadside nor any like it, though it does mention, without providing a location, a 23 page brochure with a nearly identical title printed by the same printer. Carriage manufacturing broadsides of this size are extremely uncommon and this may possibly be a unique copy.         Grover Cleveland Demonstrates a Washingtonian Vision of the Presidency

When a president's work is done, we "should expect the person we have thus designated to resume his place among his fellow citizens"& When Cleveland took office in 1885, one world was ending and a new one was emerging. The signs were every- where: a complete, national railroad grid was being built, cities were being wired for electrity, and the telephone system was starting to be installed. In the political arena, Cleveland bridged the time between the old and the new - from when Congress dominated na- tional affairs to the modern era when the Executive branch would do so.& Cleveland was elected by pledging to bring integrity to government, and saw two aspects of this in his role as president. One was that of a righteous watchdog making sure other politi- cians stayed honest. The second was to conduct himself personally in such a way as to set an example of integ- rity, making his acts match his words. His White House was a place not of& ostentation, lavish living, arrogance, or self-importance, nor where the well- connected could rely on their interests being served, but one where true public service and disinterested honesty were foremost. He was self-reliant to a re- markable degree, conducting the presidency with one telephone and sometimes answering the door himself. The people loved him for it.& To Cleveland, the essence of presidential integrity was that the president must consider himself just an average citizen selected for a short time to manage the people's affairs. To believe otherwise, to consider that he was an important per- son deserving special treatment (and by extension that his friends and relatives were special people deserving special attention), would be to betray the hopes of the nation, as it would lead to a governing oligarchy consisting of the power- ful and the wealthy. He would have been scandalized by the presidency of the modern era. Here is a succinct statement of his philosophy.& Autograph Letter Signed in the years between his two terms, three pages 8vo, Buzzard's Bay, Mass., June 14, 1891, to Julius Strause, who had apparently been referred to Cleveland by the noted author Hamlin Garland. "Mr. Garland has sent to me your letter of June 3d in which you request of him a letter or other writ- ing of mine. He suggests that I furnish something that will answer your purpose. I can hardly imagine that my efforts in this direction will be of any great value to you and yet I am certainly willing to accede to your request. I suppose your desire arises from the fact that I have occupied the office of President. It is a great and profoundly& Page 51& Page 52& responsible office. But it seems to me that, as Americans, we ought to regard it merely as a designation of one of our number to do for us certain work under our government by the people; and that when this work is done should expect the person we have thus designated, to resume his place among his fellow citizens- no wiser and not particularly better than the rest of our people, by reason of his having occupied the position to which they called him."& This is by far the finest statement on the presidency by a president that we have ever seen, or, in fact, that could be ever made.

        Pen-and-ink Drawing, captioned "Caleb's courtship / Eunice Stout", signed ("A. B. Frost")

N.p. n.d. ca. 1885 N.p., n.d. [ca. 1885?]. Image size, 6 x 5 in. One a sheet measuring 13 1/2 x 10 in. Some soilng and staining, mostly marginal, and two small, light stains within image. Framed and glazed . A delicate, lightly-inked drawing of a young woman, standing at a kitchen table, stirring the ingredients of a large bowl, beside which sit a jug and an opened bag. She is dressed simply, in a blouse and skirt, and wears a large sun-bonnet. Her face is in repose, and the skill of the artist has invested the drawing with a sense of gentle calm. In the lower right corner, there is a pencilled note "Reduced to 2/3 col wide Mag. pro.", from which we may infer that this is an illustration for a piece of magazine fiction, but we have been unable to trace which one.To judge from the Frost watercolor, "The Candlestick Girl", reproduced in Henry M. Reed's The A.B. Frost Book, in which "the model in this painting is thought to be Miss Emily Phillips who shortly after this painting was completed became Mrs. A.B. Frost" (p. 19), this drawing is also of the artist's wife -- the resemblance is unmistakable, the drawing showing the young woman's face in considerably greater detail. Emily Louise Levis Phillips came from a prominent Philadelphia family; she studied art in Germany and was an artist of no small skill. She was born in 1852, one year and two days after the birth of her husband; they were married in 1883, and she died just six months after him, in 1928. A FINE, SENSITIVE DRAWING OF MAJOR ASSOCIATION INTEREST

        Three Documents

Washington, 1885. unbound. Rare assemblage of three documents pertaining to the founding, completion, and dedication of the Washington Monument. First: the original ornate August 1, 1850 subscription mailing letter titled "The Officers and Board of Managers of the Washington National Monument Society." 1 page measuring 8 1/4" x 10 1/2", with 19 facsimile signatures of the officers including Millard Fillmore as ex-officio President and Winfield Scott and Peter Force as Managers. A vignette of the original design of the Washington Monument is at the upper left. The next item is an outstanding example of the U.S. Government invitation to attend the Ceremonies on the Completion of the Washington Monument; heavy stock with no folding creases. Measures 6 1/2" x 10 1/2". In full: "The Capital, Washington, D.C. The Commission appointed under the joint resolution of Congress approved May 13th 1884, in relation to ceremonies to be authorized...at the dedication of the Washington Monument...requests the pleasure of your attendance at these ceremonies to be held in the City of Washington, D.C. on February 21st 1885." Signed by John Sherman, Chairman of the Commission. Decorated with an excellent steel engraving of Gilbert Stuarts depiction of George Washington; with flags, rays of light and images of liberty surrounding the monument. The invitation is addressed in holograph to Madison Davis -- Post Office Dept. -- an African-American Postmaster appointed in Athens, Georgia on February 13, 1882.The last item is the very elusive ticket to attend the Dedication of the Washington Monument, February 21st 1885, on the Floor of the House of Representatives: "Admit bearer to the East Door leading to the Rotunda." Signed by John Sherman (in facsimile) as Chairman. This rare example has one tiny chip at the lower border and some minor foxing through the word "Dedication" -- otherwise it is in fine condition. Three years after the dedication, when the Washington Monument finally opened to the public (October 9, 1888) it was hailed as the "Worlds Tallest Structure.

        HOLLAND AND ITS PEOPLE

New York & London: G.P. Putnam's Sons 1885. New York & London: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1885.. Quarto. Publisher's mauve cloth, heavily decorated in gilt and blind, untrimmed. Plates and illustrations. Minor speckling to the cloth sizing at the extreme foretips, some foxing early and late and occasionally to a few margins of plates, institutional bookplate on pastedown, otherwise about fine and bright, in faintly hand-smudged printed dust jacket with some offsetting to the lower panel from the rather battered publisher's box. The "Zuyder-Zee Edition," limited to 600 numbered copies, of which this is one of 250 copies on untrimmed Linen paper. However, this copy is at variance with the colophon, in that it is accompanied by the extra suite of ten mounted etchings specially printed on satin that was to accompany the first 25 copies, rather than the two sets of ordinary impressions associated with this middle issue. The corners of the mats are a bit bumped and worn, and one of the etchings is a bit foxed, otherwise the suite is in very good order, in the chipped remnants of the original printed paper wrapper (also bearing a bookplate). This deluxe edition features original etchings (some in Japon proof state) by, and photogravures after, the likes of Pennell, Gifford, Vanderhoof, Colman, et al. The jacket is not among those selected examples of 19th century jackets cited by Tanselle.

"Wyanoke Coaching Club, September 13th 1885"

New York: Long & Heppner 327 East 34th Street New York 1885 New York: Long & Heppner, 327 East 34th Street, New York, 1885. (COACHING) Photo image 10 x 14 inches, 14-3/4 x 20 inches overall. Albumen print, made on the occasion of the group's journey "From Slevin's Snug Hotel, 211 and 213 Bleeker St., to Boulevard Hotel, College Point, L.I.". Faint waterstain to upper corner of mount, away from photograph, else fine . A technically superb and imposing time exposure (some movement in the tree branches overhead), showing close to a hundred elegantly-attired Club members, a handsome four-in-hand behind them, at, presumably, their destination at the end of this Sunday excursion. Not surprisingly, they appear to be a prosperous and fairly young crowd: all are men, and one holds a banjo, although the prevailing atmosphere appears to be a serious one, perhaps a result of their successful exertions. An engaging and important historic record of New York coaching in its glory days

Housed in a velvet-lined red cloth clamshell case.Edward Linley Sambourne (1844-1910), “English draughtsman, illustrator and designer, was born in London, on the 4th of January 1844. He was educated at the City of London School, and also received a few months’ education at the South Kensington School of Art. After a six years' ‘gentleman apprenticeship’ with John Penn & Son, marine engineers, Greenwich, his humorous and fanciful sketches made surreptitiously in the drawing-office of that firm were shown to Mark Lemon, editor of Punch, and at once secured him an invitation to draw for that journal. In April 1867 appeared his first sketch, ‘Pros and Cons,’ and from that time his work was regularly seen, with rare exceptions, in the weekly pages of Punch. In 1871 he was called to the Punch ‘table.’ At the beginning he made his name by his ‘social’ drawings and especially by his highly elaborated initial letters. He drew his first political cartoon, properly so-called, in 1884, and ten years later began regularly to design the weekly second cartoon, following Sir John Tenniel as chief cartoonist in 1901. Examples of his best work in book illustration are in Sir F.C. Burnand’s New Sandford and Merton (1872), and in Charles Kingsley’s Water Babies (1885), which contains some of his most delicate and delightful drawings. The design for the Diploma for the Fisheries Exhibition (1883) is of its kind one of the most extraordinary things in English art. As a political designer, while distinguished for wit and force, he was invariably refined and good-humoured to the uttermost; yet it is essentially as an artist that he takes his highest place. He died on the 3rd of August 1910. See M.H. Spielmann, The History of Punch (London, 1895)” (Encyclopædia Britannica, Eleventh Edition).

        Auf dem Lande

München: Braun & Schneider, 1885. Hardcover. Fair. Lothar Meggendorfer. Achte auflage. A rare Meggendorfer panorama presented on leporello folds, with 10 panels [possibly the last two panels are missing]. The continuous scene that runs across the panels starts with families arriving on trains to pick berries in a forest. The scene then moves on to the animals in the forest and then the farmers working their fields at the edge of the forest. Then it goes on to show the children working at the farm, gathering kindle wood, and then on to the farm animals and to the river bank where the children are fishing and playing with their toy boats. With a large riverboat in the background [that says Bavaria on its side] there are the fishermen in the deeper waters of the river. The scene progresses to the other side of the river where there is more fishing and basket traps for fish and lots of ducks leading up to the shore where there is another farmyard. There is a verse, in German, running along underneath all 10 panels. The book was printed by Meisenbach, most likely using his newly invented halftone process. On inspection I believe that the main images were printed from screened halftone blocks and the colour added with several line blocks - giving a hand coloured look. One of the cloth backstrips between two panels has been replaced. There is some chipping to the upper board edges along the backstrip. Some of the joins are loose but all are intact and the panorama can be quite safely fully opened to be viewed in its full glory of over 3 metres! As mentioned above, I think that there should be 12 panels. Each panel: 19x31 cm.

Fourth Edition of this famous compilation, one of the great chronicles of Elizabethan maritime exploration by one of England?s most vigorous propagandists, a work referred to by Froude as ?the prose epic of the modern English nation?. It was first published in 1589, with a second enlarged edition appearing in 1599-1600, and a third in 1809-10. The work relates English travels to the Middle East and Asia, the discoveries of the English towards the north and northeast and Russia, and voyages and travels to the northwestern arctic and North and South America from English and other sources.
