Illustrazioni: Molte illustrazioni in bianco e nero in rilievo e 20 tavole a tutta pagina protette da velina (una velina manca di un angolo inferiore) . Formato: in folio . Foto disponibili . Collana: Maitres Modernes . Note epoca: Non datato ma desunto.

Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Islands (Seven Volumes)

London: R. H. Porter First published in series by subscription from 1885 to 1897, and now bound into seven volumes. Collated and complete with 421 color illustrations. Engraved frontispiece in Volume I. Half bound in dark green Moroccan leather and cloth, by Zaehnsdorf. Raised spine bands and gilt stamped lettering and decorations. Top edge is gilded. Marbled end leaves. Book plate of Walter Rutherford Peterson on front paste downs, though detached and missing from Volume I and detached and laid in Volume IV. Inked name of James Frank Peters on the first blank page after free end leaf of all volumes. Volume I has the front paper wrap cover of Part I, October, 1885, bound in at rear, and Volume VII has the front paper wrap cover of Part XXXVI bound at the rear. All volumes show slight spine lean. Leather over spine is faded to a dark brown, though remains very attractive. Covers show a few scuffs and light rubbing, with one larger scuff in the leather of the top cover on Volume VII. Scattered, light, foxing throughout, mostly on edges, though affecting a few of the plates. Color plates of the Marsh Warbler in Volume III and of the Coot in Volume IV have both stuck to adjacent pages just a little, resulting in some roughness of the illustration. Volumes all remain solid and tight. Despite the fading on the spine, the set shows very well and remains a draw on the shelf. . First Edition. Half Leather - Hardbound. Very Good/No Jacket. Illus. by A. Thorburn; J. G. Keulemans; and G. E. Lodge.

ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (Tom Sawyer's Comrade) Scene: The Mississippi Valley Time: Forty to Fifty Years Ago

New York: Charles L. Webster, 1885. 1st American Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/No jacket as issued. VERY GOOD TRUE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION AND FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION. Bright gold accents to black pictorial front cover and spine over green cloth. Tight, clean and square binding. Tight joints and hinges. Straight spine. Frontispiece drawing of Huckleberry Finn by E.W. Kemble; frontispiece portrait of Twain's bust sculpted by Karl Gerhardt; illustrated throughout with an additional 173 charming black and white illustrations by E.W. Kemble. Smooth, pale peach page block generally clean and unmarred with no bookplate, annotations, salient marks, tears or folds; no loose pages. Entirely original in unrepaired condition. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is considered Twain's masterpiece: a vivid depiction of people and daily life along the Mississippi River. Huck narrates, in Southern antebellum vernacular, his adventures with runaway slave, Jim, as they raft their way to freedom. Traditional points by BAL, Johnson, Blanck and McBride have proven inconclusive due to the random nature of electrotype printing. Our copy has all of only three first printing points: "Decided" on page 9, "88" on page 13 and "with the was" on page 57. Our desirable first state tissued frontispiece, with cloth and Heliotype credit, has no relation to printing order. Bindings of leather, blue cloth to match Tom Sawyer, and green cloth also have no relation to printing order. (MacDonnell, Collecting Mark Twain, IV. Huck Finn Among the Issue-Mongers) 1885 stated. 8vo (8 1/2 in. x 6 1/2 in.); 366 pp. Extremities lightly worn; graceful 1885 signature; scattered small stains; last few leaves lightly foxed; sturdy hinge with paper tears; trace of blind-stamped name of signer. Well-preserved first American edition and first illustrated edition of this defining novel of American literature.

Det kommunistiske Manifest. (i.e. "The Communist Manifesto").

København (Copenhagen), 1885. 4to. In contemporary half calf with gilt lettering to spine. In "Socialistisk Bibliotek" ("Socialist Library"). Entire volume 1-3 offered. With wear to extremities, otherwise a fine and clean copy. Pp. 1-20. [Entire volume: 296, (4), IV, 122, (6), 172 pp.].. First Danish translation, second impression, of Marx' and Engels' groundbreaking and revolutionary work of communist propaganda, "undoubtedly the most widespread, the most international production of all Socialist literature, the common platform acknowledged by millions of working men from Siberia to California", (Preface to the 1888-edition, p. 3). Being the first collected edition, the present publication is traditionally regarded as being the first published Danish translation (the first issue was presumably published the year before in installments). The present publication states "1885" on the title-page but could very well have been published by the end of 1884. (Andréas p. 113).At the general election in 1884 in Denmark, the Social Democratic Party gained its first two MPs, which was pivotal in a process in which many workers became politically active. This suggested a conscious stance of the class struggle which resulted in many workers joining the unions and the Social Democratic Party. The general sentiment was that only a comprehensive and unified workforce on the labor market could create the needed material progress. Realizing this, a need for theoretical insight with knowledge of the socialist principles rose, culminating in the party's proclamation: "Everything important in the socialist literature should be translated and published!" The first consequence of this was the Danish translation of 'The Communist Manifesto" and later the translation of "The Capital". "Admitted by every serious student of society to be one of the outstanding political documents of all time - the "Manifesto of the Communist Party" outlined the main positions of Marxism as a theory of history, a criticism of Socialist doctrine and a programme of revolutionary Action" (Printing and The Mind of Man: 326). "Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei" was first published in London in German in 1848 by commission of the second congress of the Communist League, which consisted mainly of exiled Germans living in London. "The revolutionary upsurge in Europe owed nothing to the 'Manifesto'; but the panic-stricken authorities found its subversive sentiments a good excuse for action against its authors. Marx and his wife were arrested and expelled from Belgium. Later the Neue Rheinische Zeitung, Marx's principal organ of expression, was suppressed in Cologne, the final issue being defiantly printed in red, and Marx himselfwas expelled in turn from Germany and France. He then emigrated to England, where he spent the rest of his life - much of it in the reading room of the British Museum." (Printing and The Mind of Man: 326).Although the preface of the first edition of the Communist Manifesto states that it has been translated into several different languages (English, French, Italian, Dutch, Danish) which should all have appeared the same year, none of them actually did. Not a single copy of any of these alleged translations has ever appeared and it is evident that, although some of them had been prepared as early as 1848, they only came out years later (the first of them being the English, 1850).       Guigoni & Bossi,, Milano (Mailand), 1885 - Milano (Mailand), Guigoni & Bossi, o. (Zitat) Italienisch [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES [With Signature of R. M. Ballantyne to the Title Page]

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1885. A fascinating and important first edition copy with outstanding provenance. The signature of R. M. Ballantyne is tipped onto the title page and an inscription to the front free end paper states 'from Jean Ballantyne 1902.' [Robert Michael Ballantyne, Scottish author of juvenile fiction, wrote more than 100 books the most famous of which 'The Coral Island'. was a strong influence on Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 - 94), who would later base portions of his famous book Treasure Island on themes in 'The Coral Island'. Jean Ballantyne is believed to be one of the daughters of R. M. Ballantyne, probably named after Balantyne's mother Jean. It is a moot point as to whether this was actually Balantyne's copy, though it would seem so; there is also a seemingly unrelated gift inscription on the front free end paper]. Pp. x, 101 [3 -blanks]; original end papers. Original blue cloth with bevelled edges, gilt lettering to the spine with gilt vignette to the front board, binding very good with a little general wear, slightly marked, head/tail of the spine and corners rubbed. Contents clean and tight, a few gatherings slightly out of line, end papers tanned, a few pages slightly dusty at edges, otherwise appears unmarked. A very good first edition copy, signed on a slip to the title page by R. M. Ballantyne. [Bibliographic note: this first edition copy mentions '(two series)' after 'New Arabian Nights' on the advert for books 'By the Same Author' and it would seem that might suggest it is a second issue of the first edition.].

Original brown stiff pictorial wrs.,. facsimile map, 324p., index, 14 engravings, exceptionally. bright, very clean copy, minor spine head/tail rubbing, the. *RARE FIRST ISSUE* FIRST LIMITED EDITION OF ONLY 500 COPIES. This is Hearn's fifth published title. * SUBTITLE: continued: "Edited and compiled by several leading writers of the New Orleans Press." * This obscure work came with a loose map laid inside the front cover, most all of which have now vanished from the majority of remaining copies. Where necessary in order to make the book complete we provide a facsimile copy of the original map in full size. The loosely inserted guide map, was an after thought so it was not ever attached or glued in. [See Perkins below]. * THE PLATES: The work was illustrated with a frontispiece and 13 original engravings inserted, not included in the pagination, most were done by Joseph Pennell. * The book contains exhaustive accounts of the traditions, historical legends, and remarkable localities of the Creole city. * Copies of this book were hawked by peddlers at the Exposition grounds. The period rumor was that Hearn had a romantic affair with a Creole woman named Mattie Foley. It is possible that her influence gave Hearn enough interest to write and edit this work. Hearn was also a resident of New Orleans for many years. Liberally extracted from Perkins, see below. * BINDING VARIANTS: This guide was done as a part of the celebrations for the Centennial Exposition for New Orleans. Per P. Perkins, this title was printed in a LIMITED EDITION OF 1000 COPIES, of which 500 were sent to D.H. Holmes in New Orleans, for distribution at the Exposition. See Perkins p.8 for details about the gray stiff wrappers edition. The balance of 500 copies were sold by the publisher. That edition was bound in reddish-brown covers, but the 500 copies sent to Holmes were stripped of their red cardboard covers and rebound in gray paper wrappers bearing the advertisement of D.H. Holmes on the front and back wrappers. Traces of the original Reddish- brown wrappers can be found under the gray on the spine. D. H. Holmes sent some of these Sketch Books to the Exposition grounds for sale by peddlers. Most of these copies had a paster put on the front cover showing a picture of a church with the lettering "Illustrated Guide & Sketch Book to New Orleans." Another small paster covered the price on the large paster. Some of the copies distributed by Coleman were bound in cloth." extracted from Perkins p.9. * EDITIONS: Perkins also discusses the points of the first, second and third issues which are clearly outlined in much detail. In essence, the book was for sale in three variant original bindings: cloth: brown, olive brown, dark brown or blue; brown [red-brick] stiff paper wrappers [THE FIRST EDITION]; gray wrappers. Per Perkins, there is NO priority or extra value in any one color cloth over the other [see Perkins p.10], but the FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST ISSUE IS ABOVE ALL THE RAREST ORIGINAL EDITION OF ALL COPIES. * HEARN'S ROLE AND CONTRIBUTION: L. Hearn was the editor of this book and he also contribu- ted two essays to this guide: they are: PERE ANTOINE'S DATE PALM, pp.111-114; and also THE SCENES OF CABLE'S ROMANCES, pp.293-299. The celebrated George Cable et al were only a few of the many other contributors. * Hearn was a resident of New Orleans, and a frequent writer for local papers as well as being the author of his own books and translations. * * * AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE, IMPORTANT & EARLY HEARN ITEM * * * BIBLIOGRAPHY: HOWES: C574 BAL: 2340 & 7915 P.D & Ione Perkins: LAFCADIO HEARN A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF HIS --WRITINGS, pp.8-10 * Variant edition covers and other images can be found on our web site. * Color scans can be sent by email.         Sitting Bull Photograph by D.F. Barry. No date, but likely c.1885

D.F.Barry, Birmarck, North Dakota, no date. (c.1885)., 1885, Not Relevant, Book Condition: Very Good Condition, First Edition. Albumen photograph of the famous Sioux Chief standing in a studio setting, taken by the well known photographer D.F. Barry of Bismarch, North Dakota. Whilst not detailed, it is likely that this photo would have been taken whilst Sitting Bull was at the Fort Yates, Standing Rock Agency on the South / North Dakota boundary, where he had returned, along with 186 of his tribe, in 1881 following his self imposed exile in Canada following the fight at the Little Big Horn in June 1876 and the death of General Custer together with a large portion of his troops. Whilst at the agency, Sitting Bull briefly went on tour with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and made a significant income from performances, selling photographs and autographs to the crowds, though reputedly giving much of his money away to the poor and homeless. He might reasonably be described as the first "celebrity" Indian due to his popularity on the tour, whilst still feared by the authorities in the form of the Agent at Fort Yates and some elements of his tribe, an issue which would ultimately lead to his murder in 1890. The photograph features Sitting Bull in a full headdress of feathers, whilst holding a war club in his left hand. On the original D.F.Barry mount, with imprint and title in the lower margin, and pictorial imprint on the reverse. Image 5.5 x 3.75 inches, mount 6.5 x 4.25 inches. The image is creased horizontally at the centre, causing the surface of the print to break. There is no loss however. Originally from the library of Harry & Connie Lockwood, Cincinnati, Ohio, and sold at auction Thursday 4th November 1999. Quantity Available: 1. Category: General Custer; Inventory No: 188467.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1885 - 1885 Wisden Paperback, Facsimile Spine, Very Good.

1885. This is a delightful 1885 Original Paperback Wisden, 22nd Edition, with facsimile spine. The covers are super, odd mark but amazing for well over 100 years old, internally it is a very bright book, the odd spot to the odd page but for 1885 it is as white as they come. Spine is of similar colour to the book, the advantage of the facsimile spine is that you can read it without fear of breaking it , plus it is cheaper than an original too.

CHANG-O ASCENDS TO THE MOON: JOGA HONGETSU TSUKI. A Color Woodblock Print. From

[Tokyo] 1885, Akiyama. A single Oban sheet, very good, sheet. size 25 x 36 cm., print size 22 x 33 cm., very good, minor. surface dust/soil, excellent impression and registry, very. good color, gauffrage in the cartouche.. A BEAUTIFUL COLOR PRINT FROM CHINESE MYTHOLOGY In Chinese mythology, Ch'ang-O is the woman in the moon. She was the wife of an heroic archer, who was rewarded for his services to the Gods by a gift of the elixir of immortality. In her husband's absence she stole the potion and drank it herself. She then ascended to the moon. It is sometimes said that when she got there she was turned into a three-legged toad as punishment for her theft. Chang-o [or Chang-E] is called Joga in Japanese. A wonderful view of the 'Queen of the Moon" in her elaborate costume, while floating on a clo- ud, she holds the cup with the elixir. Superbly executed. See Stevenson: YOSHITOSHI'S ONE HUNDREDED ASPECTS OF THE MOON, no. 2 for more details on the print & story. See TAI- SO YOSHITOSHI, Koln 1971 no. 54B p.102.         Kindergarten Chimes: A Collection of Songs And Games Composed and Arranged for Kindergartens and Primary Schools

Boston: Oliver Ditson & Co., (and NY, Ditson; Phila., Ditson; and Chicago, Lyon and Healy), 1885. Slim roy. 8vo, x, 102pp. Printed music in the text throughout. Original brown cloth lettered in gilt on the upper cover, a very good copy neatly restored. Interesting association (see below). First edition of Wiggin’s second book, the ‘B’ issue of the text without two blanks at the end but the ‘A’ binding of full dark brown cloth. Anecdotally the much rarer form of the binding; the book is almost always found in printed boards with a cloth back -- Blanck lists this full cloth binding as the first version. In this format a truly rare book, this copy with a contemporary signature at the front “S.D. Bush” and all six blank leaves filled with manuscript children’s songs not in the book. One is a “finger-play” poem by Emilie Poulsson that seems to have been well known at that time and is published in her book “Finger Plays for Nursery and Kindergarten” (1893). Another is the hymn “Tiny little snow flakes” by Lucy Larcomb, probably first published in a hymnal in the 1860s. BAL 22577 (’a’ binding ‘b’ text, no priority established).

        Eros & Psyche

1885. The Tale of Eros & PsycheIn a Wonderful Early Twentieth Century Highly Elaborate Binding by Riviére & Son[RIVIÉRE & Son, binders]. BRIDGES, Robert. Eros & Psyche. A Poem in Twelve Measures… The Story done into English from the Latin of Apuleius. London: George Bell and Sons, 1885. First edition. Small quarto (7 1/8 x 5 5/16 inches; 181 x 135 mm.). [viii], 158, [2, adverts & colophon] pp. Bound ca. 1910 by Riviére & Son (stamp signed "Bound by Riviére & Son" on front turn-in. Full red morocco, both covers elaborately stamped in gilt with a floral vine pattern and twenty-eight flowers within 'hundreds of gilt 'pointille dots', spine with five raised bands, elaborately tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, gilt boards edges and turn-ins, watered red silk paste-downs and end-leaves, all edges gilt. An immaculate and very fine example of an early twentieth century highly decorative binding by Riviére & Son. Housed in the original full red straight grain morocco pull-off case.Eros and Psyche is a narrative poem with strong romantic and tragic themes: first published in 1885 by Robert Bridges.Bridges' Eros and Psyche retells the Eros (Cupid) and Psyche myth first recorded by Lucius Apuleius in his book The Golden Ass. The work received critical acclaim; Coventry Patmore expressing the opinion that Bridge's version would become the standard form of Apuleius myth. As Psyche - the youngest daughter of a petty Cretan king - grows into the full flower of womanhood, she becomes worshiped by the common people as the living apotheosis of Aphrodite. Aphrodite - noting her worshipers forsaking her temples to instead ask for the princess' blessings - demands speedy vengeance. Commanding her own son (Cupid) for her purpose: Aphrodite orders him to make the Princess Psyche fall in love with some ugly, worthless vagabond. Cupid departs upon his mission. Cupid's capriciousness - his delight in making gods and men love someone unobtainable - is amply repaid by the Fates: who now condemn him to experience the same. Arriving in Crete and seeing Psyche: Cupid himself falls helplessly in love with her, and resolves to marry her himself and protect her from his own mother's jealous ire. Cupid whisks his beloved Psyche away to a secret dwelling place - conjured into existence by his own divine powers: here Psyche can remain in safety, being protected watched and served by friendly spirits.Robert Seymour Bridges (1844-1930), was Britain's poet laureate from 1913 to 1930. A doctor by training, he achieved literary fame only late in life.
