Browning, Robert
London: Smith, Elder, and Co, 1884. Hardcover. First Edition. Forged presentation copy "To GF Watts from Robert Browning. Dec 1884." The inscription is not in Browning's hand. This book with a forged inscription is described by Philip Kelley and Betty Coley in The Browning Collections, 325 as reading "W G F Watts." Their transcription is almost certainly incorrect as the first word looks like an uncrossed "to" similar to the uncrossed "Watts." In very good original dark brown cloth boards with gilt title to spine and black decoration to front board. Rubbing to hinges, edges, and corners with short open tear to book cloth along front hinge. Foxing to first and last few pages with a few light pencil bracket marks to text and occasional folded corners. Blue end pages. 143 pages plus 8 pages of ads. From the collection of Stuart B. Schimmel. Schimmel was a well-known collector of literary forgers and forgeries. His collection was sold at auction in 2012. POE/022014. Very Good.

London: The Ornamental Arts of Japan (2 Volumes) Copyrighted1884 These folio sized volumes contain numerous full page chomrolithograph color and black and white prints. The volumes are divided into 9 sections including Painting; Embroidery; Textiles; Lacquer; Encrusted Work; Metal Work; Cloisonne/Enamel; Modeling/Carving; Heraldry. The interiors of both volumes are very clean with no extraneous marks. These volumes are bound in blue-green dyed leather boards with gilt embellishments (possibly rebound?). These books are large and weigh over 19 lbs each! Notes on condition: The binding (front board & spine/back board) of Volume I is unattached! Binding tape and glue would easily repair this volume. The front cover of Volume II is starting to separate. These were discarded from the Illinois State Library, and each volume contains an stamped inventory number in ink and a second punched stamp (see photo with blue circles). There are no other indicators of being housed in a library, although the title pages for each volume have been trimmed and pasted with new paper (see photo). I'm not sure what the reason for this was. A few small imperfections to note (of which all are pictured): pages 39-41 have light damp stain on top; 1 text page has a clipped corner; 1 back endpaper is torn; 1 torn plate protection page (tissue paper). A little about the content of the books: Japanese art was virtually unknown in the West until the middle of the nineteenth century, when the island nation emerged from 200 years of self-imposed isolation. A passion for Japanese culture swept Europe, and this … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Shillaber, Benjamin Penhallow].
W.J. Morgan & Co. Lith, 1884. [Shillaber, Benjamin Penhallow].[Poster]. Mrs. Partington.Cleveland: W.J. Morgan & Co. Lith. [ca. 1884]. Color lithograph. 42 x 28 1/4 inches (106.75 x 71.75 cm). First edition. A very good copy, margin restored at the left edge, spotting to top margin, remnant of text banner affixed to bottom (Condition B+). Item #43305 Illustrated with five vignettes of Mrs. Partington in action. Mrs. Partington, the American version of Mrs. Malaprop, was the creation of the Boston writer Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814-1890). She appeared in three of this works: Life and Sayings of Mrs. Partington (1854); Partingtonian Patchwork (1873); and Ike and his Friends (1879). "The book... was a favorite of [Mark Twain's]. He probably intended the picture of Mrs. P[artington] on the last page of Tom Sawyer as both a tribute to Shillaber and an acknowledgment of the kinship between the two aunts and their mischievous nephews" (Stephen Railton: Mark Twain in His Times, Tom Sawyer, Sources & Pretexts: twain.lib.virginia.edu/tomsawye/tomhompg.html). The character appeared on the stage as early as 1862 at Barnum's American Museum. The actor / comedian Joseph H. Keane toured with this operetta adaptation in the 1880s and was advertised in 1884 as "A genuine New England home picture in four acts and a hundred laughable tableaux, founded on the mythical career of mirth-provoking conversations of that famous old lady, the pranks of her mischievous son Ike, and perhaps of her acquaintances which are familiar ideals in every household in the land." The poster was most likely … [Click Below for Full Description]

Beautifully illustrated beveled boards in bright gilt and crisp black on grey-green b.g., moderate shelf wear. Stylish antiquarian inscription at front endpaper: "Affectionately, Doug"; and, vintage bookplate of Wayne Brooking featuring coiled serpent wrapping around tree. Dark brown pastedown and end pages; front endpaper clipped. Bind good, square; hinges reinforced. Wood engraved frontispiece of Pallas w/busts of Poe and Doré designed by Elihu Vedder. Additionally, twenty-six full-page illustrated plates of Gustave Doré grace the large volume from various engravers. Doré's mystical and chillingly macabre imagery illuminate Poe's eerie poem of sadness and longing for the dearest Lenore. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Insured post. Egar Allan Poe's hazy narrative begins on a night in December when "The Raven" haunts the unnamed narrator who sits reading "forgotten lore" to sublimate the loss of his love, Lenore. A "rapping at his chamber door" reveals nothing, yet excites his soul to "burning". A similar rapping, slightly louder, is heard at hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Forgan, Robert
John Menzies & Co, Edinburgh, Scotland, 1884. 70 pp. Frontispiece drawing, and others within. 18x12.2 cm. (7¼x4¾") cloth-backed pictorial boards. Third Edition. The first golf book to be successful in sales. Forgan founded a famous club-making firm in St Andrews and his old shop is still open as a museum for visitors. Murdoch states: "This book, somewhat like [Farnie's] The Golfer's Manual (1857) in style but considerably more comprehensive in content, includes instruction, history, outstanding golf feats and other golfiana, such as a reprint of a magazine article by Horace G. Hutchinson and a ballade by Andrew Lang. It also includes 'Rules', the local rules for the Old Course at St. Andrews, a 'Glossary of Technical Terms' and a list of 'Clubs in Great Britain,' which included, at this early date, six in Ireland." First published in 1881 by John Innes, Cupar, Scotland, the book went into numerous reprintings, and by 1897 the title had changed to The Golfer's Manual and contained photographic illustrations. Murdoch 260; D&J F11770. Worn boards, contents good, spine has had small restoration, still good copy of a scarce title.
