Tolstoy
Hectographic copy 1884 of the manuscript of the copyist of the forbidden article of Tolstoy L.N. Moscow 1884 208 pages 1 sheet is missing (195-196, 205-206 pp.) The article "What is my faith?" Was published on January 22, 1884. The book was printed in a separate edition, circulation of 50 copies. Having received the conclusions of the Moscow censorship committees of the secular and religious, the head of the Main Press Directorate on February 14 ordered "on the unconditional prohibition of the composition." On February 18 of the same year, 39 copies were seized at the Kushneryov printing house. this work. Due to criticism of church doctrine, a censorship ban was immediately imposed on the book. But after the confiscation of the circulation, individual requests for issuing copies of the book rained down in the Censorship Committee. Among those who asked were: Minister of the Interior Count Tolstoy, other ministers, many senior officials. In the palace and court spheres they also wanted to have several copies. As a result, the entire circulation escaped destruction and was sold in a rather unusual, but quite legal way, taking a copy of it to a personal collection. On February 19, Tolstoy reported: "My book was published and banned, but not burnt, but taken to Petersburg, where, as far as I know, those who banned it take it apart and read it. And that's good. " As the "Confession" and religious and philosophical works of the 1880s, the treatise went hand in hand, in hectographed and lithographed copies. [Click Below for Full Description]

Detailgetreue Replik, handgegossen.

Brazil ? Slavery
Dec. 19, 1823 ? Sep. 2, 1884. Autograph writing on paper (2) and lined paper (3) resp. as well as printed form filled out by hand (2). 8vo ? sm. fol., 3 of which on double leaf. Cultural-historically important block from the late period of one of the darkest chapters of the history of humanity. Its closure was ?first suggested by the Quakers? (Meyers Konversations-Lexikon) and starting with the English parliament in 1788 it received increasing proscription, though it continued to make history for another hundred years, finding a bloody closure in North America in 1865 due to the civil war there while it took about another generation in the case of Brazil here. And even the Holy See had taken its stand against the slavery only in 1839 and in such a way 16 years after the 1823 first document here. ? In their sequence given here present thematically wide-ranged Brazilian documents thus are exemplary evidences of a gradual break with slavery there, too, effected not least also by social and demographic changes. So according to a census already in 1872 about three quarters of all Africans and Brazilians of African descent were free: the widespread Portuguese practice of manumission ? frequently through self-purchase as also documented below ? as a means of getting workers for somewhat more responsible occupations like overseers, cowboys or muleteers as well as the fact that children of free mothers also were free had eroded slavery since long. Furthermore in the end employing white workers had frequently become cheaper than purchase and keeping of black slaves. Their quite essen … [Click Below for Full Description]

Softcover. Very Good. String-tied quarto leaves handwritten on rectos on thin paper, laid into a quarto binder. 573pp. Half cloth and marbled papercovered boards with partially printed label. First leaf pulled through the string, a few words torn away from the second leaf, folds, creases, and small tears on the first and last few leaves; rear board detached, but contents largely very good or better. Exhaustive transcript for a case between Harvey Kennedy and Henry H. Porter that involved railroad stocks and potential fraud. A syndicate was formed by Porter, Kennedy, and other capitalists in 1873, for the purpose of dealing in the stock of the West Wisconsin Railway Company. Porter was the sole agent and he gained controlling interest in both that railroad, and in the Chicago and North-Western Railway Company, but apparently Porter transferred most of the ownership to himself. What remained he distributed to the syndicate, except to Kennedy, who was justifiably unhappy. Judge Van Vorst concurred with Kennedy.

HOMMEL, Karl Ferdinand.
G. Le Bon, La civilisation des Arabes (1884), p. 679. First edition of a work on Arabic sources dealing with laws, by the German lawyer and professor Karl Ferdinand Hommel (1722-1781). He stresses the importance of also including sources written in Arabic when researching law, because they often contain new or different information, but are often overlooked or ignored. The first half of the book lists some Hebrew sources discussing law, and the second half contains many Arabic sources on law. Included at the end is an index listing all the authors mentioned. Title-page restored in the gutter and on the back. Browned, but otherwise in good condition.

William Redivivus Oliver de Lorncourt, Marquis de Leuville, published his collection POEMS AND AELIA FROM "ENTRE-NOUS" in 1884, and that is most likely the book referenced. The Marquis was something of a character, a poet-adventurer and poseur, most widely remembered for his pursuit and attempted courting of the widow of Frank Leslie. His skill as a poet was minimal, but he utilized copies of his books as calling cards, so their (subsidized) editions were large. He spent time in the US as well as his native UK, and included in his circle of acquaintances a number of Americans, including Buffalo Bill and Joaquin Miller. His conveyance of one of his books to Whitman is appropriate. WHITMAN ARCHIVE (ONLINE) med.00761.
