1884. Sherman Works to Convince his Friend's Widow (and Soon-to-be Likely Mistress) that She Just Needs Some Lovin' Sherman trashes his wife's devotion to the Catholic Church, discusses avoiding the great danger of being nominated to run for the presidency, and tries to convince his late chief-of-staff's widow that she is not crazy, but simply needs a man's company. WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN. Autograph Letter Signed, to Mrs [Mary] Audenried. St. Louis, Missouri, June 9, 1884. 8 pp octavo, On Sherman's imprinted stationery. Inventory #23562.08 Complete Transcript 912 Garrison Avenue, St. Louis, Mo., June 9, 1884 Dear Mrs Audenried, I was pained by and [nauseous] at receiving your letter of the 6th, giving copy of part of Lizzie's letter. All this has been withheld from me. I know that Ellen took exception to Mrs. Reid using her name to get Florence into the Convent at Manhattanville. I approved of it entirely and so wrote to the Lady Superior, and I had supposed the whole matter had been dropped. Lizzie is a good girl, but sensitive about her mother, and what has passed between you and her I have no knowledge whatever, and do not want to enquire into. With Mrs S the Church is more sacred than the Creator himself, the latter may err, but the former never any allusion to it is like the red flag to the wild bull and she loses all reason and sense. She would sacrifice every thing on earth to the Church, her children even, and she would be made supremely happy if I would give up name, fame, country, everything & become an Irish Catholic drayman. Better let the matter rest, and it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Spotting to page block but not much at all inside the book. Some rounding off on the corners of the covers and first couple of pages. No restoration.

It was in this year that the Michigan Equal Suffrage Association was formed in Flint, and that Senator Thomas W. Palmer (MI) made the first U.S. Senate speech in support of women's suffrage. Traverse City itself was also expanding. Founded as an official town only 32 years before, the construction of its first road in 1864 assisted with transportation to a site that had previously only been accessible by water. The sawmill and lumber business provided employment for most men. Unmarried women frequently took jobs, while married women frequently took up housekeeping responsibilities for their families. "Across the state, middle class homemakers shaped numerous new and expanded charitable and professional associations, promoted mothers' pensions, and expanded forms of soc … [Click Below for Full Description]

[1884]. Very Good. Softcover. String-tied quarto leaves handwritten on rectos on thin paper, laid into a quarto binder. 573pp. Half cloth and marbled papercovered boards with partially printed label. First leaf pulled through the string, a few words torn away from the second leaf, folds, creases, and small tears on the first and last few leaves; rear board detached, but contents largely very good or better. Exhaustive transcript for a case between Harvey Kennedy and Henry H. Porter that involved railroad stocks and potential fraud. A syndicate was formed by Porter, Kennedy, and other capitalists in 1873, for the purpose of dealing in the stock of the West Wisconsin Railway Company. Porter was the sole agent and he gained controlling interest in both that railroad, and in the Chicago and North-Western Railway Company, but apparently Porter transferred most of the ownership to himself. What remained he distributed to the syndicate, except to Kennedy, who was justifiably unhappy. Judge Van Vorst concurred with Kennedy.

Henshall, James A., M.D, / Author of "Book of the Black Bass"
Robert Clarke & Co, Cincinnati. No dates later than 1884; the first edition. Originally published as columns in the periodicals "Forest and Stream" and "The American Field." We'll grade this copy of "Camping and Cruising in Florida" "very good," while noting that a long-ago owner decided to coat the gray cloth-covered exterior of the boards with some kind of glossy preservative, most likely shellac, and that the job was a bit haphazard, with a bit of the excess forming drips (now long dried) along the top of the floral front pastedown. The author has inscribed this copy to the blank recto of the frontispiece illustration in an elegant period hand, but has NOT signed. Specifically, Henshall, author of somewhat more famous (and common) "Book of the Black Bass," has here inscribed to "R.B. Marston Esq -- / with kind regards of the author" and, below that, dated "Cynthiana, Ky -- June 25th 1884." As editor of London's "Fishing Gazette" from 1878 through 1927, Robert Bright Marston (1853-1927) "published the insights, experiences and expertise of the leading anglers of the day, chronicling such developments as the rise of the dry fly in Great Britain and the United States," sayeth the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum, dubbing Marston "one of the most important scholars in the world of fly-fishing, and certainly the most authoritative on the literature connected with Izaak Walton and 'The Compleat Angler.'" Previoud owner R.B. was the son of Edward Marston, partner in the publishing firm of Samson Low, Marston & Co., which published some of the best-known books of the age, in … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: Harrison and Sons., 1884. First edition, folio, pp.(17)-21, map. Included in: Reports from Her Majesty's Diplomatic and Consular Officers Abroad on subjects of commercial and general interest (whole issue included). [C.-3831, Commercial, No.2 (1884). A very good copy stitched in original series paper covers. A few spots to cover. Peter Leys served as acting Governor of Labuan, 1881-88. Desirous of opening trade between Labuan and ports opened by the newly formed North Borneo Company he borrowed the launch of Pangeran Tumonggong of Brunei to visit the three principal rivers opening into Brunei bay, the Padas, the Lawas, and the Limbang. In this brief report he discusses taxes, makes a plea for the opening up of the country, and manages to insult the Brunei rulers: ".. the Brunei rulers are ignorant, weak, and dilatory.. although possessed of considerable refinement and dignity of manner and shrewdness of intellect, they, as a rule, can neither read nor write.." The map, measuring 29.5 x 18 cm, covers the coastal area from the Baram river to Gaya island.

YOU'LL LOVE THESE WEIRD TALES!!! Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849) was an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic, and is considered part of the American Romantic Movement. He was a great intellect and a sad heart. Best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre, Poe was one of the earliest American practitioners of the short story and is considered the inventor of the detective-fiction genre. He is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Poe's publishing career began humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. In January 1845, Poe published his poem "THE RAVEN" to instant s … [Click Below for Full Description]

Twain, Mark (Clemens, Samuel)
London: Chatto & Windus, 1884. Hard Cover. First Edition. Fine. Illustrated by Edward Windsor Kemble. First edition, first state with 32 page catalogue dated October 1884, and preceding the American edition by three months. Finely bound by Bayntun in full red polished calf, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, gilt borders to covers, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. An excellent copy with two small repairs to catalogue pages 21/22 and 23/24, original publisher's cloth bound-in at rear, otherwise an extremely fresh and clean in a beautiful binding. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a pseudo companion novel to Twain's highly successful The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876); although both are set in the antebellum South, Tom Sawyer is the tale of a young boy's mischievous adventures, while Huckleberry Finn involves a disenfranchised youth's moral dilemmas about social conflict. Specifically, Huckleberry Finn runs away from his alcoholic father and befriends Jim, a run-away African-American slave seeking freedom in the North. The dialog of the text features local dialects drawn from Twain's experiences living in the South. When it was first published in the United States in 1885, Huckleberry Finn was highly scrutinized and was banned by several libraries. Interestingly, the text was banned not for its saturation of racist vocabulary and prejudiced world-views, but for its depiction of criminal, lower class white Americans. Although it continued to be challenged in the 20th century for its depiction and treatment of African-Americans, Adventures of Huckleberry Fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tolstoy
Hectographic copy 1884 of the manuscript of the copyist of the forbidden article of Tolstoy L.N. Moscow 1884 208 pages 1 sheet is missing (195-196, 205-206 pp.) The article "What is my faith?" Was published on January 22, 1884. The book was printed in a separate edition, circulation of 50 copies. Having received the conclusions of the Moscow censorship committees of the secular and religious, the head of the Main Press Directorate on February 14 ordered "on the unconditional prohibition of the composition." On February 18 of the same year, 39 copies were seized at the Kushneryov printing house. this work. Due to criticism of church doctrine, a censorship ban was immediately imposed on the book. But after the confiscation of the circulation, individual requests for issuing copies of the book rained down in the Censorship Committee. Among those who asked were: Minister of the Interior Count Tolstoy, other ministers, many senior officials. In the palace and court spheres they also wanted to have several copies. As a result, the entire circulation escaped destruction and was sold in a rather unusual, but quite legal way, taking a copy of it to a personal collection. On February 19, Tolstoy reported: "My book was published and banned, but not burnt, but taken to Petersburg, where, as far as I know, those who banned it take it apart and read it. And that's good. " As the "Confession" and religious and philosophical works of the 1880s, the treatise went hand in hand, in hectographed and lithographed copies. Статья «В чём моя вера?» была опубликована 22 января 1884 года. Книга была … [Click Below for Full Description]

Detailgetreue Replik, handgegossen.

Brazil ? Slavery
Dec. 19, 1823 ? Sep. 2, 1884. Autograph writing on paper (2) and lined paper (3) resp. as well as printed form filled out by hand (2). 8vo ? sm. fol., 3 of which on double leaf.
