Woodcut portrait vignettes on half-title and title-page, woodcut frontispiece and two plates with blank vellum guards, by Hablot K. Browne ("Phiz"). [iv], v, [i], 49, [4, blank], [1, ads] pp. 4to. One of Three Printed on Vellum. Facsimile edition printed on vellum, according to Gimbel "one of only three copies that were printed on vellum." Plain paper copies were issued in wrappers with the text and imprint: "A Reproduction in Exact Fac-simile of the Excessively Rare Original. London: J.W. The Gimbel catalogue identifies copies with and without 4 leaves of front- and end-matter containing an introduction (though to be by T.J. Wise) and Jarvis ads and notes "another impression" with the heading "Sunday Under Three Heads" on p. 35. The present copy is without the the introduction and ads (though the original Chapman and Hall ads are reproduced at the end) and has the heading on p. 35. Sunday Under Three Heads, published under the pseudonym Timothy Sparks, was "a pamphlet directed against the Sunday Observance Billl, an Evangelical measure which would have severly curtailed the Sunday amusements of the labouring and middle classes" (Ackroyd, p. 185). Tchaikovsky, Pyotr Ilyich
1884. Quarto, 6 volumes. Bound in full red morocco, gilt titles, gilt ruling to the spine, front and rear panels. In near fine condition. Mixed early editions. Rare and desirable. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, often anglicized as Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was a Russian composer of the late-Romantic period, some of whose works are among the most popular music in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, bolstered by his appearances as a guest conductor in Europe and the United States. Tchaikovsky was honored in 1884, by Emperor Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension. Although musically precocious, Tchaikovsky was educated for a career as a civil servant. There was scant opportunity for a musical career in Russia at that time and no system of public music education. When an opportunity for such an education arose, he entered the nascent St. Petersburg Conservatory, from which he graduated in 1865. The formal Western-oriented teaching he received there set him apart from composers of the contemporary nationalist movement embodied by the Russian composers of The Five, with whom his professional relationship was mixed. Tchaikovsky's training set him on a path to reconcile what he had learned with the native musical practices to which he had been exposed from childhood. From this reconciliation, he forged a personal but unmistakably Russian style--a task that did not prove easy. The principles that governed melody, harmony and other fundamentals of Russian music ran completely counter to those that gover … [Click Below for Full Description]

Captain Charles Warren
1884 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An important atlas folio of plans and excavations during Charles Warren's expedition of Western Palestine-Jerusalem 1867-1870. An Atlas Folio in size. These plates are from General Sir Charles Warren's expedition to Jerusalem having been recruited by the Palestine Exploration Fund to conduct Biblical archaeology reconnaissance. Warren was one of the earliest European archaeologists of the Biblical holy Land, and of Temple Mount, which was excavated during this expedition. Warren's expedition was also the first excavations of Tell es-Sultan, the site of the biblical city of Jericho. There are many elevations and plans demonstrating this major excavation. The final plate of this work is a large plan of the Noble Sanctuary. This expedition saw the discovery of 'Warren's Shaft' and a series of temples under the Temple Mount. The topographic map of Jerusalem was also improved by this expedition. Several books were published regarding this expedition. A textual account of the expedition was published the same year as this. Collated, complete with all fifty plates. With the original ribbon tie to the top edge only. The ties to the fore edge and to the bottom edge have become damaged. A very scarce collection of plates. Condition: In the original half morocco portfolio case, with original cloth boards. Externally, rubbed. The binding has separated from the backstrip which is lacking the majority. Plates are loosely inserted in as called for. The first leaf, which forms the contents is slightly soiled with creasing to the edges. A few small tidemarks … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tolstoy
Hectographic copy 1884 of the manuscript of the copyist of the forbidden article of Tolstoy L.N. Moscow 1884 208 pages 1 sheet is missing (195-196, 205-206 pp.) The article "What is my faith?" Was published on January 22, 1884. The book was printed in a separate edition, circulation of 50 copies. Having received the conclusions of the Moscow censorship committees of the secular and religious, the head of the Main Press Directorate on February 14 ordered "on the unconditional prohibition of the composition." On February 18 of the same year, 39 copies were seized at the Kushneryov printing house. this work. Due to criticism of church doctrine, a censorship ban was immediately imposed on the book. But after the confiscation of the circulation, individual requests for issuing copies of the book rained down in the Censorship Committee. Among those who asked were: Minister of the Interior Count Tolstoy, other ministers, many senior officials. In the palace and court spheres they also wanted to have several copies. As a result, the entire circulation escaped destruction and was sold in a rather unusual, but quite legal way, taking a copy of it to a personal collection. On February 19, Tolstoy reported: "My book was published and banned, but not burnt, but taken to Petersburg, where, as far as I know, those who banned it take it apart and read it. And that's good. " As the "Confession" and religious and philosophical works of the 1880s, the treatise went hand in hand, in hectographed and lithographed copies. It also lists the first 15 judges on the Supreme Court of the Territory of Arizona including the 7 U.S. Marshals and the List of Attorneys who practiced in the Supreme Court of Arizona though 1883. It begins with the case held in January 1866 of J.H. Davis v. John Simmons. The second case is the U.S. v. Certain Property and William Richards [Bichard] on Indian Tribes, trade and relations with the Indian tribes, particularly the Pima and Maricopa. It notes the appeals were necessarily based on the earlier laws for the Territories of New Mexico and Utah. It goes back to Chief Justice Marshall in the case of the Cherokee Nation v. the State of Georgia, which is one of the most important early cases. Other important cases involve Milton B. Duffield (1872). It also includes the interesting case of Maria Lopez de Lopes vs. the Central Arizona Mining Company (1883), on the unsafe conditions leading to the death of Florence Lopez. There are some additional cases included just before the first volume went to press. Each of the volumes are identified as from the library of Arthur H. DeRiemer who was a Nogales attorney. Many articles in the Nogales Herald newspaper deal with his cases. He became the Santa Cruz County Attorney who dealt with the case of the murder of the Postmaster (Frank J. Pearson] and his wife. Volume 2 which was not published until 1904 by Bancroft-Whitney has an introduction by E.W. Lewis which talks about original papers missing and how some that appeared i … [Click Below for Full Description]

Twain, Mark (d. i. Samuel Langhorne Clemens), Schriftsteller (1835-1910).
Über seine Schwierigkeiten bei der Niederschrift von "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn": "[...] I am in trouble again with my helfiard book. (There - I have probably spelt that word wrong again; Mr. Beecher tried a million times, if he tried once, to teach me how to spell that simple, every-day word, but somehow I never could seem to get the hang of it, and to this day I cannot use it with any sort of confidence, especially in print). It turns out that there's five weeks' solid work to be done on it (the book, not the word,) yet, instead of two weeks. So it is a hundred to one that I can't come to the banquet. I've a Boston engagement, in between, (Dec. 3) & that decreases my time and consequently my chances. Therefore, I will do the wise thing: go on with my work as if there wasn't going to the any banquet and I wasn't invited. I hate to absolutely decline, because I want to be there; but if you don't hear from me by Dec. 20, cross me off and consider that my book has got me 'in the door' and I can't come [...]" - Einrisse in den Knickfalten. - Sehr selten.

JOACHIM, Joseph 1831-1907
1884. 1 page. Oblong folio (320 x 234 mm). 7 measures from an unidentified composition in D minor for violin, marked "Allo. risoluto." Notated in ink on hand-ruled staves. Inscribed "Zur freundlichen Erinnerung an Ihren aufrichtig ergebenen." Together with bust-length carte-de-visite portrait photograph 61 x 99 mm., Berlin, ca. 1884, mounted to card stock. Photograph slightly worn and soiled. Joachim was one of the finest violinists of the 19th century. His career brought him into contact with the leading composers of the period including Mendelssohn, Schumann, Liszt, and Brahms. "Joachim's paramount importance as an interpreter in the second half of the 19th century stems partly from his direct contact with many leading composers of the day. Like Clara Schumann among pianists, he represented a new species of 'ascetic' violinist, subordinating himself to the composer rather than glorying in his virtuoso technique. This philosophy drew him inevitably to chamber music. As a soloist he concentrated on just a handful of works: Bach's solo sonatas, the violin concertos of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Viotti and Spohr, and his own concertos, notably the Konzert in ungarischer Weise op.11. It was Joachim who initiated entire recitals devoted to string quartets, and in them he presented the entire classical repertory, from Haydn to Brahms." Beatrix Borchard in Grove Music Online. A fine example. Item #31349.

35. Rein, a professor of geography in Marburg, travelled extensively through the islands of Hondo, Shikoku, Kiushi and Amakusa. SMYTH, C. Piazzi.
Robert Banks, London, 1884. Hardcover. Small octavo. xii, 13-128pp. Original green cloth with black borders and pyramid illustration on upper cover, gilt titling to spine and upper cover, b&w illustrations, appendixes. Charles Piazzi Smyth (1819 – 1900), was for a time the Astronomer Royal for Scotland and pioneered a number of innovations in astronomy as well as studies of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Inspired by the work of John Taylor, Smyth paid his own way to Egypt to examine and measure the Great Pyramid. Over time he produced four books that were focussed largely on the Great Pyramid, "Our Inheritance in the Great Pyramid" (1864), "Life and Work at the Great Pyramid During the Months of January, February, March, and April, A.D. 1865" (1867), "On the Antiquity of Intellectual Man: From a Practical and Astronomical Point of View" (1868), and "New Measures of the Great Pyramid" (1884). Alongside Taylor's 'The Great Pyramid: Why Was It Built? & Who Built It?,' these became the core works of the school of thought that saw the Great Pyramid as a tool of Biblical Prophecy. This title - which was published much later than the first three, was basically written to update it with regard to then-current research and discussions. Although many of Smyth's arguments are now largely discredited he was nonetheless a significant figure in the study of the Great Pyramid: his measurements of it were the most accurate of the time, and he was the first to photograph its inside passages under artificial (magnesium) light. Spine ends and corners lightly bruised and chafed, hinges rubbed, rea … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jackson, Helen Hunt
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1884. First edition. Near Fine. Original gray publisher's cloth binding embossed with red and gilt to spine and front board. Lacking the scarce dust jacket. Faint offsetting to the edge of the rear board and the extremities a trifle bumped. Green floral endpapers. Early ownership signature of Helen E. Reede to front flyleaf. In all, a square, pleasing copy of an important work usually found in worn condition.Following a series of devastating personal losses, Helen Hunt Jackson turned to writing both fiction and non-fiction as a means of supporting herself. Throughout her career, her works had a decidedly progressive bent. "By the 1880s, when Jackson first visited Southern California, she was an unabashed activist as well as a belletrist. Ramona offers an almost unmitigated denunciation of U.S. imperialism in California, presenting the region in a dystopian light, as a paradise gone bad" (Phillips). The work for which she is now best remembered, Ramona narrates the tragedy of a half-indigenous and half-Scottish woman and her indigenous lover Alessandro. The prejudices of those around them force the couple "to wander through Southern California as through a nightmare world, isolated, dispossessed of their rightful connection to the land, and longing to be consoled for the ruin of their dreams. Jackson created the first figures in a long line of disappointed, deracinated heroes who populate the later Southern California fiction of writers as diverse as Nathanael West, Evelyn Waugh, Thomas Pynchon, and Joan Didion" (Phillips).
