Sir Ernest George RA (13 Jun 1839–1922) was an English architect, landscape and architectural watercolour painter, and etcher. His London office was once called "The Eton of architects' offices". His pupils included Herbert Baker, Guy Dawber, John Bradshaw Gass, Edwin Lutyens and Ethel Charles. In the 1870s in partnership with Harold Peto, George designed houses in London for the Cadogan Estate in Chelsea and Kensington, and a number of country houses. In 1881 they designed Stoodleigh Court at Tiverton for Thomas Carew. In 1891 they designed an extension to West Dean House for William James, creating the Oak Room, now Oak Hall in West Dean College. Between 1870 and 1911 George designed several houses with his former pupil, Alfred B. Yeates. In New Zealand, which he never visited, he designed the Theomin family house Olveston in Dunedin which was built 1904-07. He was also responsible for the current Southwark Bridge (1921), and the Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice in London's Postman's Park. He served as president of the Royal Institute of British Architects from 1908 to 1910. Only very faint signs of some foxing. Mounted, ready to be framed. With descriptive Letterpress by Ernest George (included is a wonderful historic explanation regarding this old location in London by Ernest George). Wych Street was a street in London, roughly where Australia House now stands on Aldwych. It ran west from the church of St Clement Danes on the Strand to a point towards the southern end of Drury Lane. The street was demolished by the London County Council in around 1901, as part of the redevelopment that created the Kingsway and Aldwych. The area around Drury Lane was not affected by the Great Fire of London, and contained decrepit Elizabethan houses, with projecting wooden jetties. The Angel Inn public house was at the bottom of Wych Street, by the Strand. To the west, about halfway along on the north side, was the New Inn, an Inn of Chancery where Sir Thomas More received his early legal education, and, to the south, Lyon's Inn, another Inn of Chancery where Sir Edward Coke was a reader in 1578, which was replaced by a Globe Theatre and the Opera Comique in c.1863. At the western end was Drury House, the house of Sir Robert Drury, from which Drury Lane took its name, later rebuilt as Craven House by Lord Craven, and finally turned into a public house, the "Queen of Bohemia", named after Lord Craven's mistress, Elizabeth of Bohemia, the daughter of James I. This building was later demolished … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jewett, Sarah Orne
Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1884. First edition. Inscribed on the front fly leaf: "Lily Fairchild, With love from Sarah O. Jewett, 21 November 1883." Original publisher's brown and green cloth binding; minor shelf wear to head and crown of spine; small bumps to corners; small mark to back cover. Small tear to rear joint but text block fully attached and tight. Internally unmarked and clean. Near Fine Condition. A rare copy of Jewett's short story collection, which she wrote and published in the early years of her relationship with Annie Fields. Jewett and Fields' life together was notably enriched by the creative and intellectually engaging circle of women with whom they surrounded themselves. Among these were Sally Fairchild and her mother, the famed poet and novelist Lily Fairchild (nom de plume C. A. Price) who oversaw an artistic salon in Boston. It is to Lily that Jewett inscribed this copy, presenting it before the book's official release in 1884. The Mate of the Daylight received contemporary acclaim for its vivid representation of New Englanders' lives. "Besides the pretty idyl which gives the title, there are other two of her best pieces, delineating country ways and character, the men and women who figure in them being so true to life that one can almost point out their like in any rural neighborhood. Could anything be more real than the incidents and human nature in these?" (Literary World). Jewett's correspondence with Sally and Lily Fairchild has been documented and preserved by Coe College.

A prominent San Francisco lawyer, Barnes represented William Sharon in "one of America's noted trials and certainly the most noted in California annals in which the array of counsel was formidable. Sarah Althea Hill, a designing woman had married William Sharon, a got-rich-quick mining potentate, ostensibly for his money. At any rate Sharon claimed fraud in his suit for divorce. David S. Terry represented Mrs. Sharon as counsel. He later married his client. Judge Field had presided at the trial." 46 Decker 41, 42. Sharon, who completed his term as United States Senator from Nevada in 1881, sued in the California federal court in 1883. He claimed that Sarah had fraudulently represented that they were married. Sharon sought the federal court's declaration that they were not. After he had begun his suit, Sarah brought an action in the California state court under her claimed married name, asserting the validity of the marriage and seeking a divorce and property settlement. Here Barnes presents his argument on behalf of Sharon to the California Superior Court. His was a losing battle: The California Superior Court held the marriage valid, granted the divorce, and awarded her substantial alimony and property. Meanwhile David Terry-- a California lawyer who had been a Justice … [Click Below for Full Description]

Guy de MAUPASSANT
1884. Letter autograph signed by Guy de Maupassant to Countess Potocka, 70 lines in black ink, embellished with an original drawing in ink, on a double headed sheetlet "83, rue Dulong". Envelope attached.Published in Marlo Johnston, "Unpublished Letters of Maupassant to Countess Potocka", Literary Histories, No. 40, October-November-December 2009.Maupassant has, for years, been one of the most assiduous sighs of Countess Potocka. He is about to go and see her at the invitation of her husband: " You know, do not you, that I'm dining at your house tomorrow, invited by your husband. Her husband, Count Potocki, lived in total liberty with the Countess, busy maintaining the famous courtesan Emilienne d'Alencon; he did not take offense at the "Maccabees" of his wife, his group of suitors. The "Maccabees" had erected love in religion and they were penitents. Thus Maupassant writes to the countess: " There are not two penitents like you, first of all. And then I have a penitente that makes me rather the effect of a Director because I feel more willing to obey him than to advise. Further on, as he describes an evening he attended, he admits to having fallen into the fervor that the countess provokes at home: " As I had my rosary in my pocket, I began to recite it. a dozen by repeating between each "ave" - "Notre Dame de Vassivière, patron saint of Pavin Lake, pray for me. I was in a perfect state of meditation on leaving this house where I was received like the prodigal son. Maupassant had seen the Countess in Auvergne, on a journey that took him to Pavin Lake and Lake Vassiviere.Thi … [Click Below for Full Description]

STOWE, Lyman E
Detroit: Lyman E. Stowe, 1884. First Edition. Hardcover. A singularly eccentric work of American 19th-century imaginative writing, combining aspects of utopian literature, futurology, freethought, Swedenborgianism, Darwinism, and social engineering. Stowe's primary medium is verse, but the writing is in places sufficiently discursive that scansion seems but an afterthought. Among Stowe's many visionary conceptions are air travel; television ("Seeing Distant Friends by Electricity's Aid"); control of global weather patterns; and the replacement of solid foods with "nutritive gasses." Our choice to classify the work as essentially a work of utopian literature is based on the extended prose-and-verse entry "Sketches of the City of the Straits," which presents a decidedly utopian view of Detroit in the year 2100, including a glass dome "20 miles square" covering the entire city. The entire volume is profusely illustrated with a combination of stock woodcuts and the author's own rustic sketches, including a three-panel folding panorama of the Detroit waterfront viewed from Windsor, Ontario. Not in Sargent or Negley, despite obvious utopian elements. OCLC notes 20 holdings (about half in Michigan), but quite scarce in commerce. Tall octavo (24cm). Publisher's green beveled, pictorial cloth boards, blocked in gilt and blind on spine and covers; 319pp; illus. A bright, Fine copy, exceptionally well-preserved.
