DARWIN, KAROL [CHARLES] - [FIRST FULL POLISH TRANSLATION OF DARWIN'S "ORIGIN OF SPECIES"]
Warszawa, Przegladu Tygodniowego, 1884. Large8vo. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Wear to extremities, lacking some of the marbled paper on the boards. The gilt lettering on spine partly worn off.Hindges a bit weak. Previous owner's name [Dr. Anton Czubrynski] stamped to front free end-paper and upper right coner of title-page. Plate with genealogical tree with repairs to inner margin, otherwise internally fine and clean. 437, (1), XVI [Including the plate] pp. ¶ First edition of the first full Polish translation of Darwin's "Origin of Species". An attempt to publish a Polish translation was made as early as 1873. This was, however, never completed and only half of the work was published (Freeman 739), thus making the present copy the very first full Polish translation. <br>As seen in several other countries (especially in Japan) the majority of Polish intellectuals adopted a Social Darwinism perspective at a very early stage, rather than appreciating the English naturalist's caution in applying his ideas to human society.<br><br>"Before the first translations of Darwin's appeared [...], many Polish intellectuals, such as positivist writer Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841-1910) complained about the increasing confusion over the essence of the English naturalist's ideas, which had all too often been mixed up with all sorts of ideological debates. However, when Darwin's books were actually available in Polish translations, the novelty of his concepts gradually wore off, making room for more serious attempts to come to terms with evolutionary theory." A History of Greece; From the Earliest Period to the Close of the Generation Contemporary with Alexander the Great
1884. Rare to find this work complete, in 12 volumes. A fascinating piece of European history for those interested in Ancient Greece, or indeed the author and politician, George Grote. Born in Kent in 1794, Grote was a English classical historian, best known for his work 'A History of Greece'. Passionate about Politics, he was considered somewhat of a radical, taking a keen interest in John Stuart Mill's Utilitarian Society. Indeed his first published work was entitled 'Statement of the Question of Parliamentary Reform', and called for radical changes to the British political system. He would later serve three parliaments as an MP before the support in his party 'The Philosophical Radicals' subsided, and he eventually resigned. The bookplate of English baronet 'Sir Fresham Lever, Bt' to front pastedown of each volume. Bound by Mudie, with binders stamp to the reverse of the front endpaper of each volume. Collated complete, with all folding maps present and in excellent condition. CONDITION In a uniform full calf binding, with gilt detailng. Externally, smart. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, raised bands, joints and extremities. This has resulted in a small amount of loss to the front and rear board of all volumes, heaviest to the front board of volume X, toward the front joint. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot throughout each volume. Binder stamp to the reverse of the front endpaper of each volume. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.

John Wisden
This 1884 Wisden is in it's original wrappers and is at least good condition. As can be seen from the photograph the front cover has the odd mark and crease and in particular there is a slight stain to the bottom left hand corner of the wrapper. The rear wrapper is in very good condition with just the odd crease and mark. The spine has had a little restoration to it - not a facsimile but simply a little strenthening. Internally, the contents are in very good condition - complete, original and unmarked. A nice copy. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Hodson, James Shirley
Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, London, 1884. First edition of this comprehensive Victorian guide to book illustration, featuring twenty-four specimens of modern print processes. A printer by trade, Hodson notes that popular techniques of illustration developed more rapidly in the nineteenth century than in the prior three hundred years of print history, and offers a practical guide to current methods, "including those which are mechanical and chemical, as well as those which are based upon the application of the discoveries of photography." The plates include original examples of traditional illustration processes (line engraving, etching), as well as newer ones like chromolithography, zincography, heliotype, and Woodburytype. This copy is inscribed by the author in the year of publication, and includes an autograph letter signed by Hodson: "I have much pleasure in asking your acceptance of a copy of my book on 'Art Illustration,' & at the same time to thank you for your valuable contribution.' A crisp, near-fine copy of an uncommon book, inscribed by the author. Single volume, measuring 8.5 x 5.5 inches: [8], 224, [6], 32. LE FANU, J. Sheridan (1814-73).
London: Richard Bentley and Son, 1884. [Strange tales] FIRST ONE-VOLUME EDITION. Octavo (19 x 14cm), pp.viii; 471; [1], advertisements. Contemporary red half morocco over combed marbled sides, gilt titles and rules to spine, speckled edges. Owner name and date (1886) to flyleaf, toned to same, some acceptable wear to binding. Loosely inserted programme for a later theatrical production of Le Fanu's vampire tale Carmilla. A used yet presentable, robust copy of an absolute classic. An important book; the triple decker first edition (1872) is excessively scarce and we have handled just one copy in a decade; this single volume edition is also proving elusive, ours being the only copy available at the time of cataloguing.

First Edition, First Printing, 1884: A very good soft cover first edition of this extremely rare and fragile title. Still in publication today. FLATLAND 1ST EDITION, 1ST PRINTING 1884 EDWIN ABBOTT (A SQUARE) Seeley and Co, London 1884 First Edition, First Printing: A very good soft cover first edition of this extremely rare and fragile title. Still in publication today. An absolutely amazing story. The unrestored book is a very fragile soft cover published in 1884 which was published with a thin "skin" like tissue dust jacket/cover and as such has several missing chips most notably to the upper and lower spine, and tears to the outer wraps. The binding is tight and all pages are firmly bound and present. First blank page has a few tears. Rough cut page edges as published. The internal pages are actually quite clean and with no stains, no writing, no bent pages and no soiling. No foxing but to the end papers and to the last page in the book. A very scarce and fascinating 132 year old softcover book. 8.75" x 7.5" Perfect for the theoretical science lover, or lover fantasy and imagination. Please note the cost to ship reflects the actual cost to ship using USPS, and the cost of insurance at the USPS rate of $1.00 per $100.00 of value. The cost of insurance is reflected as a handling charge on your invoice, but is only the cost to fully insure the book. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

Hodson, James Shirley
London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle & Rivington, 1884. Original deep blue blindstamped pebbled cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, black endpapers. A History of Greece; From the Earliest Period to the Close of the Generation Contemporary with Alexander the Great
