Meynert, Theodor
Wien, Wilhelm Braumüller, 1884, 8°, X, 288 pp., 64 Holzschnitte, 1 farb. lith. Tafel, orig. Broschur; feines Exemplar in Chemise. First Edition! Theodor Meynert (1833-1892), professor of neurology and psychiatry in Vienna, was considered the greatest brain anatomist in Europe. "In the history of Neurology and psychiatry Th. Meynert stands out as an phrophet of things to come. He inspired the work of Flechsig, Wernicke, and Forel, and he left his mark on Freud's thought. Thanks to Meynert the Vienna School came to rival the Salpêtrière and Queen Square: to him we owe some of the current dynamic concepts in neurology and psychiatry." Haymaker-Schiller He belonged to the German somatist school of psychiatry, which folled Griesinger's dictum that all psychic diseases were brain diseases. He is considered by some the Father of the architectonics of the brain. His work on psychiatry (a term he later rejected) consists of a brillant study of the anatzomy, functions and diseases of the forebrain. No.4942; Norman No.1506; Haymaker-Schiller, pp.57ff.; Bibl. Walleriana 6543 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Shillaber, Benjamin Penhallow].
[Shillaber, Benjamin Penhallow].[Poster]. Mrs. Partington.Cleveland: W.J. Morgan & Co. Lith. [ca. 1884]. Color lithograph. 42 x 28 1/4 inches (106.75 x 71.75 cm). First edition. A very good copy, margin restored at the left edge, spotting to top margin, remnant of text banner affixed to bottom (Condition B+). Item #43305 Illustrated with five vignettes of Mrs. Partington in action. Mrs. Partington, the American version of Mrs. Malaprop, was the creation of the Boston writer Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814-1890). She appeared in three of this works: Life and Sayings of Mrs. Partington (1854); Partingtonian Patchwork (1873); and Ike and his Friends (1879). "The book... was a favorite of [Mark Twain's]. He probably intended the picture of Mrs. P[artington] on the last page of Tom Sawyer as both a tribute to Shillaber and an acknowledgment of the kinship between the two aunts and their mischievous nephews" (Stephen Railton: Mark Twain in His Times, Tom Sawyer, Sources & Pretexts: twain.lib.virginia.edu/tomsawye/tomhompg.html). The character appeared on the stage as early as 1862 at Barnum's American Museum. The actor / comedian Joseph H. Keane toured with this operetta adaptation in the 1880s and was advertised in 1884 as "A genuine New England home picture in four acts and a hundred laughable tableaux, founded on the mythical career of mirth-provoking conversations of that famous old lady, the pranks of her mischievous son Ike, and perhaps of her acquaintances which are familiar ideals in every household in the land." The poster was most likely for this 1884 tour, which pla … [Click Below for Full Description]

Burckhardt, Jacob, Kulturhistoriker (1818-1897)
Basel, 23. III, 1884. 1 S. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. An den namentlich nicht genannten Kunsthistoriker und Museumsdirektor Oskar Eisenmann (1842-1933) mit der Bitte um eine Auskunft, "da mir sonst Niemand Rath geben kann. Herr Habich, welcher auf seiner Reise nach Neapel mich hier besuchte, hat mir dann durch die Firma Hanfstängl die prachtvolle ganz große Photographie von Grünewald's Crucifixus zusenden lassen. Zunächst bin ich nun in Sorgen, es sei mir doch nur eine kleinere Edition davon zugedacht gewesen? was nun wohl schwer rückgängig zu machen wäre? - Sodann aber (und dieß ist's was ich von Ihnen erbitte) brauche ich Herrn Habich's Adresse um ihm schriftlich meinen Dank auszusprechen [...]". - Oskar Eisenmann war von 1876 bis 1908 Direktor der Kasseler Galerie, "gestaltete 1887 zusammen mit Bredius die Sammlungen des Mauritiushauses neu, organisierte 1888/89 die Überführung und Katalogisierung der Gemäldesammlung des Welfenhauses nach Hannover und erreichte 1900 die Neugestaltung der Karlsruher Kunsthalle" (DBE). Die erwähnten Grünewaldtafeln hatte Eisenmann 1877 in Tauberbischofsheim entdeckt und den Brauereibesitzer und Kunstsammler Edward Habich (eig. George Eduard, 1818-1901) veranlaßt, sie zu kaufen; später jedoch mußten sie an die Kirchengemeinde zurückgeben werden, 1899 wurden sie schließlich von der Karlsruher Kunsthalle erworben. - Aus dem Besitz von Kurt Martin (1843-1933), dem ehemaligen Generaldirektor der Kasseler Gemäldegalerie. - Abgedruckt in: Jacob Burckhardt: Briefe. BLOY Léon;
Paris Tresse 1884 In-12 (107 x 179 mm). [Click Below for Full Description]

Lyman E STOWE
Lyman E. Stowe, 1884. Condition: A bright, Fine copy, exceptionally well-preserved. A singularly eccentric work of American 19th-century imaginative writing, combining aspects of utopian literature, futurology, freethought, Swedenborgianism, Darwinism, and social engineering. Tall octavo (24cm). Publisher's green beveled, pictorial cloth boards, blocked in gilt and blind on spine and covers; 319pp; illus. A bright, Fine copy, exceptionally well-preserved. A singularly eccentric work of American 19th-century imaginative writing, combining aspects of utopian literature, futurology, freethought, Swedenborgianism, Darwinism, and social engineering. Stowe's primary medium is verse, but the writing is in places sufficiently discursive that scansion seems but an afterthought. Among Stowe's many visionary conceptions are air travel; television ("Seeing Distant Friends by Electricity's Aid"); control of global weather patterns; and the replacement of solid foods with "nutritive gasses." Our choice to classify the work as essentially a work of utopian literature is based on the extended prose-and-verse entry "Sketches of the City of the Straits," which presents a decidedly utopian view of Detroit in the year 2100, including a glass dome "20 miles square" covering the entire city. The entire volume is profusely illustrated with a combination of stock woodcuts and the author's own rustic sketches, including a three-panel folding panorama of the Detroit waterfront viewed from Windsor, Ontario. Not in Sargent or Negley, despite obvious utopian elements. [Attributes: First Edition]

George Grote, F.R.S
ont> John Murray : London, 1884. A complete set of 'A History of Greece' by George Grote, in a beautiful uniform leather binding. Rare to find this work complete, in 12 volumes. A fascinating piece of European history for those interested in Ancient Greece, or indeed the author and politician, George Grote. Born in Kent in 1794, Grote was a English classical historian, best known for his work 'A History of Greece'. Passionate about Politics, he was considered somewhat of a radical, taking a keen interest in John Stuart Mill's Utilitarian Society. Indeed his first published work was entitled 'Statement of the Question of Parliamentary Reform', and called for radical changes to the British political system. He would later serve three parliaments as an MP before the support in his party 'The Philosophical Radicals' subsided, and he eventually resigned. The bookplate of English baronet 'Sir Fresham Lever, Bt' to front pastedown of each volume. Bound by Mudie, with binders stamp to the reverse of the front endpaper of each volume. Collated complete, with all folding maps present and in excellent condition. Condition: In a uniform full calf binding, with gilt detailng. Externally, smart. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, raised bands, joints and extremities. GROSSI, Augusto.
Bologna: Il Papagallo, 1884. Chromolithograph. Sheet 425 x 610mm. A few signs of age, pasted on card. An Italian satire commenting on relations between Germany and Russia during the 1880s. Personifications of Germany (drinking), Austria (baiting a hook), Italy (standing waiting) and Spain (smoking a Prussian cigar) lounge on a motor yacht called 'Alleanza' piloted to Otto van Bismarck, pointedly ignoring the Russian octopus floating by their stern, clutching a mine lettered 'Guerra'. On the left a fish marked Saloccico (Thessaloniki, still in the Ottoman Vilayet of Salonica) looks on in fright; on the right is a buoy with an English sailor's head, marked 'galleggiante' (floating). In the background a mermaid (France?) pulls herself up on a Chinese junk. After the victory of the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 Bismarck was fearful that France would get its revenge by allying with Russian and attacking Germany from two sides. Therefore he did everything he could to stay on good terms with Russia, ignoring their continued southward push. Meanwhile France was extending its influence in the Far East. On the reverse of the card is another Papagallo satire, relating to the European powers preparing to feast on the Madagascan 'turkey'. 'Il Papagallo' was a satirical magazine founded in January 1873 by Augusto Grossi (1835-1919), which specialised in colour-printed caricatures like this one. At its peak circulatiion reached 50,000, and in 1878 a Parisian version, 'Le Perroquet', and London edition, 'The Parrot', were launched. 'Il Papagallo' closed in 1915, when Grossi was 70 years old. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edgar Allan Poe
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884. Condition: Very good +. First U.S. edition, elephant folio size, 73 pp. "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is considered one of the best poems in the English language, known for its lyrical rhythm and use of repetition, as well as supernatural and macabre elements. Poe gained a reputation as a popular writer and became a household name upon its publication in 1845, although he continued to struggle financially for the rest of his life. One of the first writers to attempt to make a living solely off his work, Poe's work greatly affected the burgeoning genres of horror and science fiction, and much of his work, like "The Raven", explores the tumultuous depths of the human psyche. This beloved poem has been published and illustrated many times; this volume is the first U.S. edition containing wood engravings by French printmaker and illustrator Gustave Doré (1832-1883), who provided illustrations for numerous well-known titles, such as "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. Here, his engravings match the haunting tones of the poem, with exquisitely detailed linework and stark contrast; the engravings hum with a brooding darkness. The volume also contains a title-page illustration by Elihu Vedder (1836-1923), perhaps best known for his illustrations in "The Rubaiyat"; a talented artist, in addition to illustrations he designed work for Tiffany studios and decorated the hallway of the Reading Room of the Library of Congress with murals which can still be seen today.
