Willard, Frances
Evanston, Ill: July 31, 1884. 2pp. on a single sheet of WNCTU stationery. 1 vols. Letter written by Frances Willard to Dr. Alice B. Stockham, thanking Stockham for sending along a copy of her book on childbirth and women's health. Willard was prominent in both the suffrage and temperance movements, and was influential in the passage of the 18th and 19th amendments (prohibition and votes for women, respectively); she also helped found the Woman's National Christian Temperance Union in 1874. Willard's platform of "Home Protection" as the premise behind suffrage was designed to appeal to women everywhere. She held that if a woman had the right to vote, she could better protect her home and family and improve society. To Dr. Stockham, she writes: "Dear friend, Do not think me unappreciative of your kindness, but I am always so pre-occupied that I have time but to 'dip' into any book, no matter how excellent. I have thought yours of this class so far as I had opportunity & could judge. My sister brought me one, loaned by you (when I was ill) of unique & most interesting character. I doubt not she has read it more at length than I, as I had to leave home when barely up again. This hasty line is to assure you of my appreciation of your kindness in sending the book." Old fold lines. Minor wear. Contemporary manuscript notation at top of sheet. Very good plus.

A History of Greece; From the Earliest Period to the Close of the Generation Contemporary with Alexander the Great
1884. Rare to find this work complete, in 12 volumes. A fascinating piece of European history for those interested in Ancient Greece, or indeed the author and politician, George Grote. Born in Kent in 1794, Grote was a English classical historian, best known for his work 'A History of Greece'. Passionate about Politics, he was considered somewhat of a radical, taking a keen interest in John Stuart Mill's Utilitarian Society. Indeed his first published work was entitled 'Statement of the Question of Parliamentary Reform', and called for radical changes to the British political system. He would later serve three parliaments as an MP before the support in his party 'The Philosophical Radicals' subsided, and he eventually resigned. The bookplate of English baronet 'Sir Fresham Lever, Bt' to front pastedown of each volume. Bound by Mudie, with binders stamp to the reverse of the front endpaper of each volume. Collated complete, with all folding maps present and in excellent condition. CONDITION In a uniform full calf binding, with gilt detailng. Externally, smart. Rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, raised bands, joints and extremities. This has resulted in a small amount of loss to the front and rear board of all volumes, heaviest to the front board of volume X, toward the front joint. Previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with the odd spot throughout each volume. Binder stamp to the reverse of the front endpaper of each volume. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.

OWEN, Richard
London: J. van Voorst, 1884. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. 1st Edition. Soft cover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo (224 x 143 mm). [3] 4-32 pp., 4 folding lithographed plates, 1 table, advertisment leaf bound at end. Original blind-stamped cloth, untrimmed, gilt-lettered spine (upper cover slightly marked), original yellow endpapers. Good, unsophisticated copy. ---- FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author to Sir John Fowler on first free endpaper. Richard Owen (1804-1892) was an English biologist, comparative anatomist and paleontologist. Despite being a controversial figure, he is generally considered to have been an outstanding naturalist with a remarkable gift for interpreting fossils. He produced a vast array of scientific work, but is probably best remembered today for coining the word Dinosauria. An outspoken critic of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, Owen agreed with Darwin that evolution occurred, but thought it was more complex than outlined in Darwin's On the Origin of Species. Owen's approach to evolution can be seen as having anticipated the issues that have gained greater attention with the recent emergence of evolutionary developmental biology. (Source: Wiki online).

Henry D Thoreau
Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1884. Condition: Very Good binding. First British Edition of Thoreau's Walden, though more accurately the First American printing for British sale. Follows the twenty first American edition of 1883, except for the following: printed on laid paper, without the battered 'THE END' on the final page, with two integral pages of advertisements at the rear, and new integral title and content pages. As later American editions use the same contents page and similarly drop 'THE END,' it can be supposed that this edition was printed in America and bound in Scotland. Bookplate of Francis Hemming on the front pastedown, a prolific English lepidopterist. Initialized gift inscription on the verso of the front endpaper, dated 1890, facing the title page. Publisher's green pebbled cloth, with paper title label on spine, now faded and chipped at the top and bottom. Collates complete, with publisher's advertisements; 357, [3] pp. [Attributes: First Edition]

TWAIN, Mark [CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne, pseudonym] (1835-1910), [KEMBLE, E.W., illustrator].
London: Chatto and Windus, 1884. [Literary classic] FIRST UK EDITION. Octavo, pp.xvi; 438; [2], blank. With 174 wood-cut illustrations by Kemble. Exquisitely bound by Frost of Bath in full scarlet polished calf with full gilt back, twin title labels, marbled endpapers, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, original decorative cloth covers preserved at rear, bound without adverts. Internally very clean, discreet owners stamp in purple ink to half-title, binding very fine. A beautiful copy housed in a fleece-lined cloth slip-case. Following the classic 'boy's own' adventures of the promising young gent Tom Sawyer, Twain here attempts a more mature, somewhat darker picture of a less privileged American childhood on the mighty Mississippi. Regarded by many as a corner-stone of American literature, it confronts issues such as slavery in a sympathetic yet humorously sardonic tone which belonged to Twain alone. BAL 3414. TWAIN, Mark [CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne, pseudonym] (1835-1910), [KEMBLE, E.W., illustrator].
London: Chatto and Windus, 1884. [Literature] FIRST UK EDITION, ASSOCIATION COPY, being novelist Sir Walter Besant's copy, a friend of the author and an early public champion of this book. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.xvi; 438; [34]. With 174 wood-cut illustrations by Kemble. Pictorial red cloth boards, brown floral endpapers, later adverts dated January 1885. Illustrated bookplate to pastedown "Walter Besant, M.A." An enthusiastically read copy with some leaves roughly/poorly opened, one of which (p.383) has a resulting chip/loss. Flyleaf with some abrasion caused by clumsy offset adhesive from bookplate, cloth neatly repaired to spine. Although used, this is a copy of great significance. Walter Besant was a prolific and successful novelist of the late-Victorian period. Like Charles Dickens, many of his books concerned life in London, poverty and social hardship. He was founder and first chairman of The Society of Authors and was acknowledged by Rudyard Kipling as an influence. Knighted for services to literature in 1895, he was also treasurer of the 'Atlantic Union', an association seeking to improve social relations between Britons and Americans. In 1898 Besant published a lengthy essay in Munsay's Magazine, praising this Huckleberry Finn and reckoning his choice might be 'perhaps unexpected' since it was not (at that time) 'one of the acknowledged masterpieces, or a book that had been reviewed over and over again'. Mark Twain was "delighted when Sir Walter Besant, the British novelist, critic, historian and philanthropist nominated Twain 'his favourite novelist' and Huck Finn … [Click Below for Full Description]

Warszawa, Przegladu Tygodniowego, 1884. Large8vo. In contemporary half cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Wear to extremities, lacking some of the marbled paper on the boards. The gilt lettering on spine partly worn off.Hindges a bit weak. Previous owner's name [Dr. Anton Czubrynski] stamped to front free end-paper and upper right coner of title-page. Plate with genealogical tree with repairs to inner margin, otherwise internally fine and clean. 437, (1), XVI [Including the plate] pp. ¶ First edition of the first full Polish translation of Darwin's "Origin of Species". An attempt to publish a Polish translation was made as early as 1873. This was, however, never completed and only half of the work was published (Freeman 739), thus making the present copy the very first full Polish translation. <br>As seen in several other countries (especially in Japan) the majority of Polish intellectuals adopted a Social Darwinism perspective at a very early stage, rather than appreciating the English naturalist's caution in applying his ideas to human society.<br><br>"Before the first translations of Darwin's appeared [...], many Polish intellectuals, such as positivist writer Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841-1910) complained about the increasing confusion over the essence of the English naturalist's ideas, which had all too often been mixed up with all sorts of ideological debates. However, when Darwin's books were actually available in Polish translations, the novelty of his concepts gradually wore off, making room for more serious attempts to come to terms with evolutionary theory."
