MIZUSHIMA NIHÔFU, artist
193. MIZUSHIMA NIHÔFU, artist. MANMOU MANGA 2 kan. 2 scrolls, each about 9 inches tall (Volume one is about 28 feet long and volume two is about 20 feet long). These COMIC SKETCHES OF MANCHURIA AND MONGOLIA represent a remarkable visual record of a moment in history when Japan was paramount in East Asia and seeking to plant agricultural colonies on the vast plains of Mongolia and Manchuria. All through the 30s and 40s, Japan sought to emphasize the multiethnic and multicultural realities of, especially, Manchuria. Here the noted artist Nihofu (1884-1958), whose paintings and woodblocks were and are much sought-after, has inscribed the bustling energy of the boom days when much of Japan's treasure was being expended on her pursuit of stable empire and permanent dominance. Visual tales of the everyday in the outer provinces, when every day was a day closer to the end. A work important for its unique historical value but also for its aesthetic value, as well. Nihofu was an excellent captor of human behavior. In excellent condition in brocade covers, no box.

Doré passed a year previous in January, 1883 after completing this, his last commission. With comment on Poe's narrative poem by Edmund C. Stedman. Near very good rarity with very good interior. Insured post. Edgar Allan Poe's hazy narrative begins on a night in December when "The Raven" haunts the unnamed narrator who sits reading "forgotten lore" to sublimate the loss of his love, Lenore. A "rapping at his chamber door" reveals nothing, yet excites his soul to "burning". A similar rapping, slightly louder, is heard at his window. When he investigates, a raven enters his chamber. Poe, Edgar Allan; Doré, Gustave (Artist)
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. Doré, Gustave; Vedder, Elihu. First U.S. edition, elephant folio size, 73 pp. "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is considered one of the best poems in the English language, known for its lyrical rhythm and use of repetition, as well as supernatural and macabre elements. Poe gained a reputation as a popular writer and became a household name upon its publication in 1845, although he continued to struggle financially for the rest of his life. One of the first writers to attempt to make a living solely off his work, Poe's work greatly affected the burgeoning genres of horror and science fiction, and much of his work, like "The Raven", explores the tumultuous depths of the human psyche. This beloved poem has been published and illustrated many times; this volume is the first U.S. edition containing wood engravings by French printmaker and illustrator Gustave Doré (1832-1883), who provided illustrations for numerous well-known titles, such as "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. Here, his engravings match the haunting tones of the poem, with exquisitely detailed linework and stark contrast; the engravings hum with a brooding darkness. The volume also contains a title-page illustration by Elihu Vedder (1836-1923), perhaps best known for his illustrations in "The Rubaiyat"; a talented artist, in addition to illustrations he designed work for Tiffany studios and decorated the hallway of the Reading Room of the Library of Congress with … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cory, Charles B.
Estes & Lauriat, Boston. Boston: Estes & Lauriat, [1884]-85. 4to. Frontispiece (map of Haiti). 1st edition. 22 hand-coloured lithograph plates. Original printed wrappers bound in at the rear. Half blue morocco. Some occasional foxing affecting some preliminary leaves, o/w Fine. This title comes from the distinguished library of J. Fenwick Lansdowne (1937-2008), the award winning British Columbia artistand illustrator whose accurate and artistic depictions of birds are prized  around the world by museums and collectors. HIS ARTISTICALLY DESIGNED BOOKPLATE IS TIPPED IN. The paintings of James Fenwick Lansdowne have been compared to those of John James Audubon. That Lansdowne owned a deluxe, and costly edition of Audubon's work, the Bird of America which  suggests that Lansdowne not only prized Audubon's illustrations, found inspiration in them, but perhaps tried to emulate the American artist for his magisterial depiction of wildlife, in particular birds.  Lansdowne was born in Hong Kong and in 1940 moved to Victoria, British Columbia where he worked and resided for the rest of his life. When he was only 19 years old, the Royal Ontario Museum mounted an exhibition of his watercolours. He later went on to exhibit at the Smithsonian, the American Museum of Natural History, and Audubon House in New York. In the mid 1960s, he would go on to provide illustrations for bird books as well as limited edition prints based on the large watercolour and gouache paintings used to illustrate books. He is best known as the illustrator of sumptuous books.   Lansdowne was awarded the Order of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Villa Maior, Viscount (Julio Maximo de Oliviera Pimentel). Translated by Rev. John I. Bleasdale, D.D.
Payot, Upham & Co, San Francisco. Original green cloth with gilt title, 12 mo (4.75 x 7 inches), 148 pp. The Viscount Villa Maior (1809-1884) was the author of three books on wine, as well as works on chemistry and Portuguese literature. This translation represents a portion of his 2-volume "Tratado de Vinificao para Vinhos Genuinos" (1868-69, second edition1883). The Rev. John Ignatius Bleasdale (1822-1884), a Catholic priest, chemist, mineralogist, and oenologist, was born in England, emigrated to Australia in 1850, then migrated to California in 1877, having also lived in Portugal for seven years. He died in San Francisco. In his dedicatory note, addressed to Arpad Haraszthy, Bleasdale attests to the similarities in climate and soil between Portugal and California, and the two regions' common goal of competing with the French in production of quality red wines. (See Pinney, Thomas. "John Ignatius Bleasdale: A Friend of Wine in New Worlds." San Francisco: Book Club of California, 2006 for Bleasdale's biography and a checklist of his writings on wine). Payot, Upham & Co. published three important wine books: the present volume; George Husmann's "Grape Culture and Wine Making in California"; and Emmett Rixford's "The Wine Press and the Cellar." "The Viniculture of Claret" is the most difficult to locate. Rare. (Gabler G40120, Amerine & Borg 3525, Noling p274. Not in Vicaire, this translation not in Simon) Mottled fading to upper corner of front cover, light wear to corners and spine ends, front endpapers darkened, else about very good [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THIS IS A HALF LEATHER SIGNED COPY OF BEN HUR WITH ORIGINAL SLIP CASE IN A CUSTOM CLAM SHELL BOX. THE BOOK HAS BEEN PROTECTED FOR DECADES AND IS IN FINE CONDITION WITH MINOR EDGE DRYING TO THE LEATHER AND A FEW VERY MINOR INDICATIONS OF WEAR TO THE BOOK. THE CLAM SHELL BOX HAS SOILING AND THERE IS CHIPPING AND CARDBOARD LOSS TO ONE OF THE "RUBY" COLORED PANELS ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE SLIP CASE. THE BOOK WAS BEAUTIFULLY MAINTAINED WITH ORIGINAL OWNER LIKELY IMMEDIATELY MAKING EFFORTS TO PRESERVE IT. THIS INCLUDES THE LONGER DEDICATION, AND WAS THEREFORE PRINTED AFTER 1884. IT IS COLLECTIBLE FOR THE SIGNATURE AND FOR THE 3/4 RUBY CALF BINDING THAT HAS SURVIVED IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AS WELL AS FOR HAVING THE ORIGINAL SLIP CASE, WHICH IS UNHEARD OF. This book was printed after 1884, because the dedication was altered from "To the Wife of my Youth" to "To the Wife of my Youth Who Still Abides Me" This includes a clam shell custom made for the book, the original slip case which identifies it as "BEN-HUR 8-4 CALF RUBY", and the 3/4 leather bound book in fine condition with only the most minor issues of wear. 1- Clam shell is soiled but has done its job protecting the book. (Photo 1) 2- Slip case for the book is a ruby color and is missing the rear tall and narrow ruby colored panel (Photo 10). There are chips and surface wear as well as a partial split on the bottom. It appears that some linen repairs were made to the corners over the years. It is no beauty but remains stable and is what it is. 3- 3/4 Ruby calf leather binding. Top page edges are gold gilt in excellent condition. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frances W Titus
Good used condition. Signed by the author and edited in her hand on page 134. Spine is off square but binding is sound. Pages have lightly tanned with age but are not brittle. No foxing noted. From a smoke-free home and smells good. This book is a treasure, and I have loved owning it. It is an early edition of The Narrative of Sojourner Truth by Frances W. Titus, who was a trusted confidante and scribe for Sojourner Truth. This book predates an edition that had an included page at the beginning titled "To the reader", which corrected at least two misprints in the book (this book does not have the To The Reader page, and it does have the errors mentioned on that page). However, the author, Titus, signed this copy for her friend, and corrected one of those misprints in her elegant script, seen on page 134. I have included photos of that page. This edition seems to be from 1884, though it was entered into the Library of Congress in 1875. Other notes on the condition of the book: One page was ripped and repaired long ago; please see photos. A former owner wrote his name on the front free end paper. There are a few random stains and markings, but no foxing in the book. The binding is offsquare, but sound. In one place, you can see the sewn binding at the spine edge. But otherwise, the book feels remarkably safe and touchable for its age. It is from a smoke-free home and smells good. Please review photos carefully. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I can send you more at your request. I want you to be very happy with your purchase, so please contact me with any questions.
