YOUNGHUSBAND, Captain Frank E.
YOUNGHUSBAND, Captain Frank E. The Heart of a Continent: A Narrative of Travels in Manchuria, across the Gobi Desert, through the Himalayas, the Pamirs, and Chitral, 1884-1894. London, John Murray, 1896.8vo. Original green cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt; pp. xix, 409; 18 illustrations from photographs and original sketches, 4 folding maps including one in rear pocket; minimal rubbing to extremities, very light marginal toning, the map in the rear pocket, which has never been taken out before we got it has a few weakened areas at the crossings of the folds; a very good copy.Very rare first edition of a cornerstone of a Central Asian travel book collection. Younghusband (1863-1942) was a key figure in Central Asian exploration, both for his own travels in the region and latterly as President of the Royal Geographical Society and chairman of the Mount Everest Committee. The present work relates his almost unbroken journey from Vladivostock, through Manchuria, Mukden, the Gobi Desert and the Himalayas, finally to the Hindu Kush. It contains observations on customs, climate, politics and geography and is perhaps the definitive work of its time on these regions. In addition to his many talents and interests, Younghusband was also something of a mystic and he comments in the book on the spitirual aspects of his journey. The Heart of a Continent earned him recognition from the RGS, which awarded him its Gold Medal. 'In 1886 he accompanied a seven-month expedition to Manchuria. In Peking (Beijing) in March 1887 he met his superior Colonel Mark Sever Bell, and the two men obta … [Click Below for Full Description]

The dimensions of the painting are 8 7/8 x 10 1/2 inches. The painting is unsigned. There is a gallery label verso from D & E Lake Ltd. Fine Arts of Toronto that certifies this to be an original work of art by the artist. The painting is stamped by the gallery with a facsimile signature lower right and verso. Of his biography, the gallery writes that he "was born in Dunnville, Ontario, to a family of tradesmen. In documents from the period Drake listed his occupation as Printer. He lived in Toronto most of his life and worked for the Toronto Telegram newspaper for many years as a type-setter and illustrator (in 1963 he received a 50 year medal from the Typographical Union. No. 91). He had extensive contact with artists active in the Toronto area and was a friend of J.E.H. and Thoreau MacDonald (a work in the estate [held by the gallery] bears a presentation inscription from the artists). Due to the quality of work it is believed that Drake studied at the Ontario College of Art (Franklin Carmichael, J.E.H. MacDonald, and J. W. Beatty would have been his teachers). He painted in Toronto, the greater Toronto area, and southern Ontario (his earliest work dates from the 1920?s) … [Click Below for Full Description]

nd c. 1884. Red cloth backed paper covered boards. Unpaginated 14 pages printed on one side only consisting of a title page and 6 moving images in the style of an illuminated manuscript each with multiple moving parts. When moving, the images are somewhat reminiscent of the Terry Gilliam cartoons in Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The book appears to have had some reinforcement to the pages on the gutter edge at some point in the past. The tabs are all original and a little rubbed and there are a couple of small repaired closed tears of less than 1cm to edge of the paper where the tab is pulled. All the moveables are present and complete and they all work although the third image has only 1 of the 3 moving parts working completely.

First edition of this rare and significant work describing the fossils of the Yorkshire coast, written by one of the region's most significant semi-professional palaeontologists, and with numerous pencilled drawings of the species described by an early owner. There are no copies of the first edition in auction records and WorldCat locates only seven in institutions, at the Natural History Museum in London, the University of York, the Sorbonne, the University of Glasgow, the American Museum of Natural History, and the University of Oklahoma. The second edition of 1884 is also scarce on the market. Little is known of the early life of author Martin Simpson (1800-1892), save that he was the son of a master mariner who perished at sea, he studied for a time at the University of Edinburgh, and briefly worked as a teacher, astronomy lecturer, and as secretary to the Wakefield Literary and Philosophical Society. In 1837 he was appointed "Lecturer and Keeper" of the Whitby Museum, but was let go when the museum could not pay his salary. After a brief period as curator for the Yorkshire Geological Society at Wakefield he returned to Whitby, where he had inherited a smallholding, and worked unpaid at the Museum for the next 20 years, until he was officially appointed curator in 1861. Simpson had lost his savings in the collapse of Campion's Bank, and "as a supplement to his meagre resources there were sold in Whitby shops copies of a small Guide to Whitby and the Neighbourhood, note books containing seaweeds mounted and labelled, and small boxes of Whitby fossils, numbered and labell … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: The Ornamental Arts of Japan (2 Volumes) Copyrighted1884 These folio sized volumes contain numerous full page chomrolithograph color and black and white prints. The volumes are divided into 9 sections including Painting; Embroidery; Textiles; Lacquer; Encrusted Work; Metal Work; Cloisonne/Enamel; Modeling/Carving; Heraldry. The interiors of both volumes are very clean with no extraneous marks. These volumes are bound in blue-green dyed leather boards with gilt embellishments (possibly rebound?). These books are large and weigh over 19 lbs each! Notes on condition: The binding (front board & spine/back board) of Volume I is unattached! Binding tape and glue would easily repair this volume. The front cover of Volume II is starting to separate. These were discarded from the Illinois State Library, and each volume contains an stamped inventory number in ink and a second punched stamp (see photo with blue circles). There are no other indicators of being housed in a library, although the title pages for each volume have been trimmed and pasted with new paper (see photo). I'm not sure what the reason for this was. A few small imperfections to note (of which all are pictured): pages 39-41 have light damp stain on top; 1 text page has a clipped corner; 1 back endpaper is torn; 1 torn plate protection page (tissue paper). A little about the content of the books: Japanese art was virtually unknown in the West until the middle of the nineteenth century, when the island nation emerged from 200 years of self-imposed isolation. A passion for Japanese culture swept Europe, and this … [Click Below for Full Description]

APOLLINAIRE, Guillaume
Ton G.A.
