London: The Ornamental Arts of Japan (2 Volumes) Copyrighted1884 These folio sized volumes contain numerous full page chomrolithograph color and black and white prints. The volumes are divided into 9 sections including Painting; Embroidery; Textiles; Lacquer; Encrusted Work; Metal Work; Cloisonne/Enamel; Modeling/Carving; Heraldry. The interiors of both volumes are very clean with no extraneous marks. These volumes are bound in blue-green dyed leather boards with gilt embellishments (possibly rebound?). These books are large and weigh over 19 lbs each! Notes on condition: The binding (front board & spine/back board) of Volume I is unattached! Binding tape and glue would easily repair this volume. The front cover of Volume II is starting to separate. These were discarded from the Illinois State Library, and each volume contains an stamped inventory number in ink and a second punched stamp (see photo with blue circles). There are no other indicators of being housed in a library, although the title pages for each volume have been trimmed and pasted with new paper (see photo). I'm not sure what the reason for this was. A few small imperfections to note (of which all are pictured): pages 39-41 have light damp stain on top; 1 text page has a clipped corner; 1 back endpaper is torn; 1 torn plate protection page (tissue paper). A little about the content of the books: Japanese art was virtually unknown in the West until the middle of the nineteenth century, when the island nation emerged from 200 years of self-imposed isolation. A passion for Japanese culture swept Europe, and this … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Shillaber, Benjamin Penhallow].
W.J. Morgan & Co. Lith, 1884. [Shillaber, Benjamin Penhallow].[Poster]. Mrs. Partington.Cleveland: W.J. Morgan & Co. Lith. [ca. 1884]. Color lithograph. 42 x 28 1/4 inches (106.75 x 71.75 cm). First edition. A very good copy, margin restored at the left edge, spotting to top margin, remnant of text banner affixed to bottom (Condition B+). Item #43305 Illustrated with five vignettes of Mrs. Partington in action. Mrs. Partington, the American version of Mrs. Malaprop, was the creation of the Boston writer Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814-1890). She appeared in three of this works: Life and Sayings of Mrs. Partington (1854); Partingtonian Patchwork (1873); and Ike and his Friends (1879). "The book... was a favorite of [Mark Twain's]. He probably intended the picture of Mrs. P[artington] on the last page of Tom Sawyer as both a tribute to Shillaber and an acknowledgment of the kinship between the two aunts and their mischievous nephews" (Stephen Railton: Mark Twain in His Times, Tom Sawyer, Sources & Pretexts: twain.lib.virginia.edu/tomsawye/tomhompg.html). The character appeared on the stage as early as 1862 at Barnum's American Museum. The actor / comedian Joseph H. Keane toured with this operetta adaptation in the 1880s and was advertised in 1884 as "A genuine New England home picture in four acts and a hundred laughable tableaux, founded on the mythical career of mirth-provoking conversations of that famous old lady, the pranks of her mischievous son Ike, and perhaps of her acquaintances which are familiar ideals in every household in the land." The poster was most likely … [Click Below for Full Description]

Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Insured post. Egar Allan Poe's hazy narrative begins on a night in December when "The Raven" haunts the unnamed narrator who sits reading "forgotten lore" to sublimate the loss of his love, Lenore. John Menzies & Co, Edinburgh, Scotland, 1884. 70 pp. Frontispiece drawing, and others within. 18x12.2 cm. (7¼x4¾") cloth-backed pictorial boards. Third Edition. The first golf book to be successful in sales. Forgan founded a famous club-making firm in St Andrews and his old shop is still open as a museum for visitors. Murdoch states: "This book, somewhat like [Farnie's] The Golfer's Manual (1857) in style but considerably more comprehensive in content, includes instruction, history, outstanding golf feats and other golfiana, such as a reprint of a magazine article by Horace G. Hutchinson and a ballade by Andrew Lang. It also includes 'Rules', the local rules for the Old Course at St. Andrews, a 'Glossary of Technical Terms' and a list of 'Clubs in Great Britain,' which included, at this early date, six in Ireland." First published in 1881 by John Innes, Cupar, Scotland, the book went into numerous reprintings, and by 1897 the title had changed to The Golfer's Manual and contained photographic illustrations. Murdoch 260; D&J F11770. Worn boards, contents good, spine has had small restoration, still good copy of a scarce title.

Henry D Thoreau
Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1884. Condition: Very Good binding. First British Edition of Thoreau's Walden, though more accurately the First American printing for British sale. Follows the twenty first American edition of 1883, except for the following: printed on laid paper, without the battered 'THE END' on the final page, with two integral pages of advertisements at the rear, and new integral title and content pages. As later American editions use the same contents page and similarly drop 'THE END,' it can be supposed that this edition was printed in America and bound in Scotland. Bookplate of Francis Hemming on the front pastedown, a prolific English lepidopterist. Initialized gift inscription on the verso of the front endpaper, dated 1890, facing the title page. Publisher's green pebbled cloth, with paper title label on spine, now faded and chipped at the top and bottom. Edgar Allan Poe
New York: Harper & Brothers, 1884. Condition: Very good +. First U.S. edition, elephant folio size, 73 pp. "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) is considered one of the best poems in the English language, known for its lyrical rhythm and use of repetition, as well as supernatural and macabre elements. Poe gained a reputation as a popular writer and became a household name upon its publication in 1845, although he continued to struggle financially for the rest of his life. One of the first writers to attempt to make a living solely off his work, Poe's work greatly affected the burgeoning genres of horror and science fiction, and much of his work, like "The Raven", explores the tumultuous depths of the human psyche. This beloved poem has been published and illustrated many times; this volume is the first U.S. edition containing wood engravings by French printmaker and illustrator Gustave Doré (1832-1883), who provided illustrations for numerous well-known titles, such as "Don Quixote" by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra and "Paradise Lost" by John Milton. Here, his engravings match the haunting tones of the poem, with exquisitely detailed linework and stark contrast; the engravings hum with a brooding darkness. The volume also contains a title-page illustration by Elihu Vedder (1836-1923), perhaps best known for his illustrations in "The Rubaiyat"; a talented artist, in addition to illustrations he designed work for Tiffany studios and decorated the hallway of the Reading Room of the Library of Congress with murals which can still be seen today. A fascinating piece of European history for those interested in Ancient Greece, or indeed the author and politician, George Grote. Born in Kent in 1794, Grote was a English classical historian, best known for his work 'A History of Greece'. Passionate about Politics, he was considered somewhat of a radical, taking a keen interest in John Stuart Mill's Utilitarian Society. Indeed his first published work was entitled 'Statement of the Question of Parliamentary Reform', and called for radical changes to the British political system. He would later serve three parliaments as an MP before the support in his party 'The Philosophical Radicals' subsided, and he eventually resigned. New Orleans: Southern Litho. Co., 1884. Folding lithographic map, with thirteen insets or vignettes. Sheet size: 27 1/2 x 36 3/4 inches. Printed "Stranger's Guide" affixed to front pastedown. Original publisher's blindstamped cloth. Small fold separations, expertly repaired. Very good. A rare and positively-ephemeral item from the New Orleans exposition of 1884, the second world's fair to be held in America. The Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition, held on the centennial of the first known export of cotton from the United States to Great Britain, offered New Orleans a chance to demonstrate to the world how its businesses and infrastructure had been revitalized by Reconstruction. The fair, however, suffered from debt and fraud and was not financially successful. Although the buildings constructed for the fair, held on present-day Audubon Park, were among the largest in the United States to that date, all were dismantled. The map is very detailed, showing New Orleans bounded by Lake Pontchartrain at the top and the Mississippi River at the bottom. The map shows the various levees in the city, as well as cemeteries, parks, and several railroads, including the new Shell Beach Railroad. The thirteen insets or vignette illustrations on the map include: "View of New Orleans in 1719"; "Plan of New Orleans in 1770"; "Rail- Road Map of Louisiana and Texas"; a bird's-eye view of an approach to New Orleans by water; "Ground Plan of the Exposition"; "Perspective View of the Buildings and Grounds from the northeast"; and views of seven individual Pavilions and Halls containin … [Click Below for Full Description]
