1884. Sherman Works to Convince his Friend's Widow (and Soon-to-be Likely Mistress) that She Just Needs Some Lovin' Sherman trashes his wife's devotion to the Catholic Church, discusses avoiding the great danger of being nominated to run for the presidency, and tries to convince his late chief-of-staff's widow that she is not crazy, but simply needs a man's company. WILLIAM TECUMSEH SHERMAN. Autograph Letter Signed, to Mrs [Mary] Audenried. St. Louis, Missouri, June 9, 1884. 8 pp octavo, On Sherman's imprinted stationery. Inventory #23562.08 Complete Transcript 912 Garrison Avenue, St. Louis, Mo., June 9, 1884 Dear Mrs Audenried, I was pained by and [nauseous] at receiving your letter of the 6th, giving copy of part of Lizzie's letter. All this has been withheld from me. I know that Ellen took exception to Mrs. Reid using her name to get Florence into the Convent at Manhattanville. I approved of it entirely and so wrote to the Lady Superior, and I had supposed the whole matter had been dropped. Lizzie is a good girl, but sensitive about her mother, and what has passed between you and her I have no knowledge whatever, and do not want to enquire into. With Mrs S the Church is more sacred than the Creator himself, the latter may err, but the former never any allusion to it is like the red flag to the wild bull and she loses all reason and sense. She would sacrifice every thing on earth to the Church, her children even, and she would be made supremely happy if I would give up name, fame, country, everything & become an Irish Catholic drayman. Better let the matter rest, and it … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hartford Apl 1/84 Dear Mr. Chatto: Good - that settles Hughes! Now you can settle Tauchnitz - I enclose him. Chas L. African Americana]: [Texas Jubilee Singers]
New York: Steam Print of Torrey & Clark, 1884. Engraved two-sided broadsheet, 18 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. Engraved illustration showing four male and three female performers. One vertical and three horizontal folds, very short fold separations at margins, light creasing. Very good. An exceedingly rare broadsheet advertising a performance by the Texas Jubilee Singers, who are set to perform "songs of the old plantation" and other tunes to raise funds for an all-African-American college in central Texas. Featuring a wood engraving of the seven singers in the troupe, this broadsheet advertises a concert to be performed by the "Texas Concert Company and the Jubilee Singers" - with half of the revenue going to Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas. Interestingly, the performers make it clear that they are not minstrels, but are described as "genuine Colored People, singing in interest of a Genuine Colored Institution." The twenty-piece concert comprises "Camp Meeting Hymns and Songs of the Old Plantation," offering depictions of "slave life rendered most powerfully by this Company of Singers." According to several notices on the verso from 1883 and 1884, the group's repertoire included "Hear Dem Bells," "Talk About Your Moses," "Roll and Rock Them," "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," "I'm Going Home to Dixie," "Daniel in the Lion's Den," and more. The printed notices also praise the group's numerous performances in Northern states, where they sang at opera houses, churches, and performance halls. The group's style of rendering these traditional tunes was evidently "new to this part of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Francis Drake
J.B. Lippincott & Co - Philadelphia & London, 1884. 2 Volumes, folio, illustrated with over 100 plates. Some wear a to binding , normal aging; otherwise very good. This is a highly detailed and influential work based on the efforts of Henry R. Schoolcraft (1793-1864). Schoolcraft spent his life studying the manners and customs of Native Americans, and in 1822 was appointed agent of Indian Affairs of the Northwest frontier. In1847 he was asked by Congress to do research on the tribes of the United States, and from 1850-1857 he published six volumes on the history, condition and prospects of the American Indian. In 1880 Drake would update Schoolcraft's work, and publish his efforts in these two rather massive volumes. This work has to be considered one of the most important studies on American Indian tribes, providing considerable detail on their manners, customs and history. Twain also instructs Chatto to make arrangements with Tauchnitz, the famed Leipzig publisher of continental editions of English-language authors, for an authorized edition. New York: Currier & Ive, 1884. (395 x 265 mm; sheet 450 x 340 mm). Colour lithograph. Signed in the stone lower right. Excellent condition. Lettered 'Copyright 1884, by Currier & Ives, N.Y. / Pub. by Currier & Ives, 115 Nassau St. New York', with title followed by 'To be stuck up on Bedbug's Island - Jarsey Flats, opposite de United States. / (Only Authorized Edition)' This notorious caricature was issued as part of the segregation era 'Darktown Comic' series. A black woman wearing a tattered brown dress and worn shoes, with an apron decorated in the stars and stripes, and a tall bonnet with a wide brim and white frill, standing on a plinth in the manner of the Statue of Liberty though looking far from serene, but rather clamouring; she holds a flaming torch and a book labelled 'New York Port Charges'; at her feet is a cockerel crowing; she has her back to the city, shown behind her across the water, with a distant bridge. The partnership of Nathaniel Currier (1813-1888) and James Merritt Ives (1824-1895) grew into one of the largest and most prolific printing companies of all time, at one point responsible for 95% of all lithographs in circulation in America. Beginning as a lithographer, Currier recognized the market for topical prints and news and became successful as an independent lithographer and later print publisher, before taking on his bookkeeper and accountant Ives as a partner. With hand-operated presses on one floor, artists, stone grinders and lithographers on the floor above and a team of others colouring the finished lithographs by hand on the floor above th … [Click Below for Full Description]

FREGE, G(ottlob)
[Click Below for Full Description]
