Greenville, Ca, 1884. 57 issues, comprising Vol. I, Nos. 2-7, 9-14; Vol. III, Nos. 51-52; Vol. IV, Nos. 1, 3-38, 40-43; Vol. V, Nos. 9-11. Large folio. Some light chipping and short tears at fore-edges of several issues, almost never affecting text. Contemporary and small institutional ink stamps. A substantial run of nearly sixty issues of this rare California newspaper from early in its production history. The Greenville Bulletin was published weekly in Greenville, California, from September 29, 1880 to July 1, 1891, by a series of editors, here including Edward A. Weed, Charles Mulholland, and E.G. Hail. The small town of Greenville is located in what is now the Plumas National Forest, northwest of Reno, Carson City, and Lake Tahoe; its population when the present periodical began publication in 1880 was 500. The papers contain much of interest regarding local silver mining, the regional timber and agriculture industries, municipal and state politics, and national matters of note. In addition, there is a plethora of information on local news and town developments, with many local business and personal advertisements; marriage and obituary columns (titled, "The Altar" and "The Grave," respectively); society and human interest stories; industrial, agricultural, and mining anecdotes; as well as a smattering of poetry and literature. OCLC locates holdings at six institutions, of which we can confirm scattered physical holdings at only two -- UC Riverside and the New-York Historical Society. In addition to the contemporary ink stamps of a San Francisco sales agent, the … [Click Below for Full Description]

( Labarère, Essai de bibliographie pyrénéiste, I, 707).

Hectographic copy 1884 of the manuscript of the copyist of the forbidden article of Tolstoy L.N. Moscow 1884 208 pages 1 sheet is missing (195-196, 205-206 pp.) The article "What is my faith?" Was published on January 22, 1884. The book was printed in a separate edition, circulation of 50 copies. Having received the conclusions of the Moscow censorship committees of the secular and religious, the head of the Main Press Directorate on February 14 ordered "on the unconditional prohibition of the composition." On February 18 of the same year, 39 copies were seized at the Kushneryov printing house. this work. Due to criticism of church doctrine, a censorship ban was immediately imposed on the book. But after the confiscation of the circulation, individual requests for issuing copies of the book rained down in the Censorship Committee. Among those who asked were: Minister of the Interior Count Tolstoy, other ministers, many senior officials. In the palace and court spheres they also wanted to have several copies. As a result, the entire circulation escaped destruction and was sold in a rather unusual, but quite legal way, taking a copy of it to a personal collection. On February 19, Tolstoy reported: "My book was published and banned, but not burnt, but taken to Petersburg, where, as far as I know, those who banned it take it apart and read it. And that's good. " As the "Confession" and religious and philosophical works of the 1880s, the treatise went hand in hand, in hectographed and lithographed copies. DOUGHTY, Charles Montague.
London: Edward Stanford for the R.G.S., 1884. Coloured lithograph. Printed area 465 x 510mm. Small tear in lower margin repaired. A map of north western Arabia, with an inset of western Jordan, marking Doughty's routes criss-crossing the region. Doughty (1843-1926) learned Arabic in Damascus before joining a pilgrim caravan heading south for Meccas in 1876. He spent the next two years travelling in poverty, reaching as far east as Buraydah in the Nejd before turning south towards Mecca and Jeddah. Exhausted, it took several years for him to write of his experiences. This map accompanied his account for the Royal Geographical Society; his 'Travels in Arabia Deserta' was not published until 1884. Originally it has little impact, but in the 1920s it was championed by T.E. Lawrence ('Lawrence of Arabia') and republished to greater acclaim.

In-text diagrams, 2 pp. publisher's advertisements at end. Spine titles faded, boards a little soiled and foxed, light toning to title page; else a clean and very good copy indeed. 1884. THIS IS A HALF LEATHER SIGNED COPY OF BEN HUR WITH ORIGINAL SLIP CASE IN A CUSTOM CLAM SHELL BOX. THE BOOK HAS BEEN PROTECTED FOR DECADES AND IS IN FINE CONDITION WITH MINOR EDGE DRYING TO THE LEATHER AND A FEW VERY MINOR INDICATIONS OF WEAR TO THE BOOK. THE CLAM SHELL BOX HAS SOILING AND THERE IS CHIPPING AND CARDBOARD LOSS TO ONE OF THE "RUBY" COLORED PANELS ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE SLIP CASE. THE BOOK WAS BEAUTIFULLY MAINTAINED WITH ORIGINAL OWNER LIKELY IMMEDIATELY MAKING EFFORTS TO PRESERVE IT. THIS INCLUDES THE LONGER DEDICATION, AND WAS THEREFORE PRINTED AFTER 1884. IT IS COLLECTIBLE FOR THE SIGNATURE AND FOR THE 3/4 RUBY CALF BINDING THAT HAS SURVIVED IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AS WELL AS FOR HAVING THE ORIGINAL SLIP CASE, WHICH IS UNHEARD OF. This book was printed after 1884, because the dedication was altered from "To the Wife of my Youth" to "To the Wife of my Youth Who Still Abides Me" This includes a clam shell custom made for the book, the original slip case which identifies it as "BEN-HUR 8-4 CALF RUBY", and the 3/4 leather bound book in fine condition with only the most minor issues of wear. 1- Clam shell is soiled but has done its job protecting the book. (Photo 1) 2- Slip case for the book is a ruby color and is missing the rear tall and narrow ruby colored panel (Photo 10). There are chips and surface wear as well as a partial split on the bottom. It appears that some linen repairs were made to the corners over the years. It is no beauty but remains stable and is what it is. 3- 3/4 Ruby calf leather binding. Top page edges are gold gilt in excellent condi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tolstoy
Статья «В чём моя вера?» была опубликована 22 января 1884 года. Книга была … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tchaikovsky, Pyotr Ilyich
1884. Quarto, 6 volumes. Bound in full red morocco, gilt titles, gilt ruling to the spine, front and rear panels. In near fine condition. Mixed early editions. Rare and desirable. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, often anglicized as Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was a Russian composer of the late-Romantic period, some of whose works are among the most popular music in the classical repertoire. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally, bolstered by his appearances as a guest conductor in Europe and the United States. Tchaikovsky was honored in 1884, by Emperor Alexander III, and awarded a lifetime pension. Although musically precocious, Tchaikovsky was educated for a career as a civil servant. There was scant opportunity for a musical career in Russia at that time and no system of public music education. When an opportunity for such an education arose, he entered the nascent St. Petersburg Conservatory, from which he graduated in 1865. The formal Western-oriented teaching he received there set him apart from composers of the contemporary nationalist movement embodied by the Russian composers of The Five, with whom his professional relationship was mixed. Tchaikovsky's training set him on a path to reconcile what he had learned with the native musical practices to which he had been exposed from childhood. From this reconciliation, he forged a personal but unmistakably Russian style--a task that did not prove easy. The principles that governed melody, harmony and other fundamentals of Russian music ran completely counter to those that govern … [Click Below for Full Description]

EDWIN A. ABBOTT
Seeley & Company, 1884. First Edition, First Printing: Original printed stiff paper wrappers with a glassine cover with most of the spine pieces and corner edges missing (as common with this title usually found without the original wrapper altogether). Some slight archival repair to reinforce the integrity of the binding only. Internally, the book is clean and tidy throughout. Line drawings throughout by the author. Satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott, writing pseudonymously as "A Square". The book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture; but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions.
