Manual of classical Erotology (De figuris Veneris) . Latin text and literal English version.

Charles Carrington],, 'Manchester One Hundred Copies privately printed for Viscount Julian Smithson M.A. and friends' [Paris 1884 - First edition of this important parallel English, Latin and Greek version. It followed a poor piracy of 1882 badly translated from Liseux's French edition of 1882. Carrington gave a wry veiled account of its publication in his 1902 catalogue, Forbidden Books: 'Were I a bookseller, I do not think I should ever take the trouble to print such a book as I have now before me. Here is a Latin work, full of notes, and bristling with Greek quotations. A most careful and masterly translation has been placed opposite every page of the original text, and it needs no literary critic to see that no one but a real classical scholar-an old Oxford man-could ever have successfully struggled with such a task . The two stout volumes have evidently been printed on the Continent-and for very good and valid reasons, as no English printer would dare to undertake such a work,- therefore each page would have to be submitted to the translator, at least three or four times, foreign compositors working mechanically. Many months would thus pass in wearisome proof-reading, and when at last the hundred copies are struck off, and each man receives his due, what margin of profit awaits the silly bookseller-publisher? He is insulted in every way and laughed at if he dares to wonder that the British Customs seize any copies .'Carrington published some 300 titles (some using his own name and others using false imprints, as here) mainly in Paris where he lived from about 1894 until 1907, selling books from a shop in the Faubourg Montmartre. He notably printed a number of works by Oscar Wilde when few other publishers would risk implication in Wilde's downfall and, besides outright pornography, he printed a number of editions of classical and oriental authors and important works on the psychology of sex. In 1907 he was deported from France for consistently publishing and selling literature "of a very obscene and vulgar character". He continued his publishing business in Brussels before returning to Paris in 1912. By 1920 Carrington was blind from the effects of advanced syphilis, being admitted to the mental hospital at Ivry, south of Paris, where he died in 1921. 2 vols, 8vo (200 × 130 mm), pp. xviii, 261, [1]; [4], 250, [2]. Partially uncut and preserved with the original wrappers in early twentieth-century half morocco, spines attractively gilt with floral tools and onlays, top edge gilt. Inkstamps of Charles S. Dixwell to front free endpapers. An excellent copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Amedeo MODIGLIANI

      - Amedeo MODIGLIANI (1884.1920) Lettre autographe signée à Paulette Philippi dite « Manon ». Deux pages ½ in-8° sur papier quadrillé. Paris. (1906-1910). Apollinaire a fumé.

        TREASURE ISLAND

1884. [the first illustrated edition] With Illustrations. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1884. 12 pp undated ads. Original slate grey cloth decorated in black. First American (and first illustrated) Edition. The first English edition, unillustrated, had been published in November 1883; this American edition, with four plates by F.T. Merrill, was published in February 1884. (The first English illustrated edition, with 26 plates including the four from Roberts Bros., was not published until mid-1885.)~This copy is from the second and (in our experience) usual issue -- with the error "rain" corrected to "vain" on the last line of p. 40, and with twelve rather than four pages of ads.~According to bibliographers (such as the Yale and Princeton collections), the book appears in dark brown, slate grey or mustard-yellow cloth, without priority; we have also had aqua blue.~Condition is about very good -- moderate wear at the bottom edge of the volume, spine lightly speckled, some pages foxed or hand-soiled within. The frontispiece map and the title page are browned from the still-present tissue guard; atypically, the original leafy endpapers remain clean and un-cracked.~In our experience, this Boston edition is considerably scarcer than the 1883 English one, even on this side of the Atlantic -- and when it does turn up, it is typically in atrocious condition. Beinecke (Yale) 244 (yellow) & 245 (grey) -- no indication of p. 40 reading, but both with 4 pp ads; Princeton 22A, copy 1 (grey, "rain," 4 pp ads) & copy 2 (yellow, "vain," 12 pp ads) & copy 3 (brown, "vain," 12 pp ads).

        Naîs Micoulin

Paris: G. Charpentier, 1884. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Émile Zola. First edition of the author's scarce short-story collection, which includes Naîs Micoulin, Nantas, La Mort d'Olivier Becaille, Madame Neigeon, Les Coquillages de M. Chabre, and Jacques Damour. Zola has inscribed the book on the half title to an old school friend who became a sculptor: " `a Philippe Solari / son ami / Emile Zola." Bound in contemporary quarter calf. Light wear and rubbing to edges, flaking of calf to spine, some light scattered foxing. Otherwise, Very Good. SCARCE signed. Zola (1840-1902) and Solari (1840-1906) were life-long friends, meeting at boarding school in Aix-en-Provence. Solari was one of the few boys at school who befriended Zola and didn't taunt him for his lisp. Zola championed Solari's sculptures on numerous occasions and, in fact, a bust by Solari decorates Zola's tombstone in Montmartre cemetery. A nice association copy.

        Two Page Autograph Letter Signed

      - Two page Autograph Letter Signed ("Booker T. Washington"), on both sides of Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute stationery, dated 10 December 1884, to Mary C. Shannon of Newton, Massachusetts. Washington expresses his appreciation for the kind words of Shannon, refers to his meeting with Shannon at her Summer home, and mentions sending Shannon some "little books." He also mentions that "The school is very full of earnest and promising young men and women; and our work never looked more encouraging than now." Old folds from mailing, else fine. Washington was, and needed to be, a relentless fundraiser for the school, founded in 1881 with only $2,000 provided by the state of Alabama. His letters, especially on fundraising issues, are not uncommon, but letters written out fully by him (as opposed to secretarially) are scarce. Shannon was a wealthy New England woman who, in one form or another, financially supported African-American education efforts for forty years, dying in 1887. Despite some increasingly revisionist history about Washington's perceived role as an accommodationist, few individuals of any race or time period compiled such a record of accomplishment in the face of more concerted opposition. A nice letter handwritten relatively early in Washington's thirty-four year tenure at Tuskegee.

Autograph Letter, Signed, from Frances Willard to Dr. Alice B. Stockham, regarding the latter's new book

Evanston, Ill, 1884. 2pp. on a single sheet of WNCTU stationery. 1 vols. Old fold lines. Minor wear. Contemporary manuscript notation at top of sheet. Very good plus. 2pp. on a single sheet of WNCTU stationery. 1 vols. Letter written by Frances Willard to Dr. Alice B. Stockham, thanking Stockham for sending along a copy of her book on childbirth and women's health. Willard was prominent in both the suffrage and temperance movements, and was influential in the passage of the 18th and 19th amendments (prohibition and votes for women, respectively); she also helped found the Woman's National Christian Temperance Union in 1874. Willard's platform of "Home Protection" as the premise behind suffrage was designed to appeal to women everywhere. She held that if a woman had the right to vote, she could better protect her home and family and improve society. To Dr. Stockham, she writes: "Dear friend, Do not think me unappreciative of your kindness, but I am always so pre-occupied that I have time but to 'dip' into any book, no matter how excellent. I have thought yours of this class so far as I had opportunity & could judge. My sister brought me one, loaned by you (when I was ill) of unique & most interesting character. I doubt not she has read it more at length than I, as I had to leave home when barely up again. This hasty line is to assure you of my appreciation of your kindness in sending the book."

Manuscript]: A Christmas Garland: Original Manuscript by Rev. O. Miner, Prof. C.W. Bennett, J.G. Whittier, Rev. M.J. Savage. Arranged and Illustrated by Mrs. Harriet Miner

1884 - Original Manuscript. Large octavo. Measuring 10.5" x 7". Hand-painted illustrated stiff wrappers with later hand stitching. Four leaves with mounted manuscript poems, plus four additional leaves of original painted botanical illustrations. Within a plain paper wrapper titled in manuscript. The original stitching, long gone, has been replaced and aside from one tiny nick on the front wrap, in near perfect condition.A beautiful holiday memento executed circa 1884 by a distinguished American botanical artist. Harriet Stewart Miner was the author and illustrator of *Orchids, The Royal Family of Plants* (Boston, 1885), the first American color plate book on the subject, noted by Bennett as "very striking. the ranking work on the subject."This booklet includes finely rendered gouache flower portraits of poppies on the cover, and with an illustration inside of a hellebore inset on a miniature winter landscape; violets and hepatica; a group including clover, buttercup, and daisy; and a deep red rose. Additionally a sprig of mistletoe appears on the rear wrap. The illustrations are used to illustrate handwritten manuscript poems which are tipped onto larger leaves from an interesting group of Miner's associates: Reverend Ovid Miner, upstate New York Congregationalist Minister, abolitionist, conductor on the Underground Railroad, and close associate of Frederick Douglass; Professor Charles Wesley Bennett, educator and archaeologist who secured the Ranke Library for the newly founded Syracuse University; Reverend Minot J. Savage, a controversial Unitarian Minster who was the first prominent American clergyman to write extensively reconciling Darwinian evolution with religion; and the poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier, whose eight line excerpt from his poem "The Clear Vision" is written in his characteristic purple ink.A beautifully conceived and completed project by an important woman botanical illustrator, with her illustrations accompanying poems by notables of her time.
