Clean text and illustrations throughout, just a few brown spots (mainly to the endpapers). Colophon at base of p.102: "London: R. Clay, Sons, And Taylor, Printers." A very good copy of this scarce and unusual book. ** " A romance of many dimensions' that has fascinated generations of readers with its clever blend of social satire and mathematical theory. A work that continues to pose provocative questions about perception and reality, "Flatland" is a brilliant parody of Victorian society where all existence is limited to length and breadth - its inhabitants unable even to imagine a third dimension. The amiable narrator, A Square, provides an overview of this fantastic world - its physics and metaphysics, its history, customs and religious beliefs. But when a strange visitor mysteriously appears and transports the incredulous Flatlander to the Land of Three Dimensions, his world view is forever shattered. Written more than a century ago, "Flatland" conceals within its brilliant parody of Victorian society speculations about the universe that resonate in Einstein's theory of relativity as well as the current 'string-theory' of nature." - see Summary *** "Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is an 1884 satirical novella by the English schoolmaster Edwin Abbott Abbott. Written pseudonymously as "A Square". The book used the fictional two-dimensional world of Flatland to comment on the hierarchy of Victorian culture, but the novella's more enduring contribution is its examination of dimensions. Several films have been made from the story, including the feature film Flatland (2007). Other efforts have been short or experimental films, including one narrated by Dudley Moore and the short films Flatland: The Movie (2007) and Flatland 2: Sphereland (2012)... Although Flatland was not ignored when it was published, it did not obtain a great success. In the entry on Edwin Abbott in the Dictionary of National Biography, Flatland is not even mentioned. The book was discovered again after Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity was published, which introduced the concept of a fourth dimension. Flatland was mentioned in a letter entitled "Euclid, Newton and Einstein" published in Nature on February 12, 1920. In this letter Abbott is depicted, in a sense, as a prophet due to his intuition of the importance of time to explain certain phenomena:Some thirty or more years ago a little jeu d'esprit was written by Dr. Edwin Abbott entitled Flatland. At the time of its publication it did not attract as much attention as it deserved... If there is motion of our three-dimensional space relative to the fourth dimension, all the changes we experience and assign to the flow of time will be due simply to this movement, the whole of the future as well as the past always existing in the fourth dimension - from a "Letter to the Editor" by William Garnett. in Nature on February 12, 1920. The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography now contains a reference to Flatland." - See Wikipedia . .

Christmas Greetings (from a Fairy to a Child).

[London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1884]. Sextodecimo (16mo), single leaf, printed on one side only. Unbound as issued, printed on paper watermarked "E. Towgood Fine". Fine condition. First separate edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author in his customary purple ink, "Dorothea Winterbotham, from Lewis Carroll. A memento of Xmas, 1889." Dodgson only used his famous pseudonym in presentations to child-friends, as opposed to the usual "from the Author" inscription. Although he used the name of Lewis Carroll to avoid all personal publicity, Dodgson "broke his rule of disavowal often, usually with children whose friendships had ripened to the point where he wished to confide in them, to share a great secret with them, but sometimes even earlier, when he was in pursuit and he rightly assumed that the fame of the author of the Alice books would help to break the ice with the parents of likely candidates" (Cohen, p. 191). Originally written in 1867, this short poem was first published in 1869, when it appeared in Phantasmagoria with slight variations. This poem also appears as the final text on the last page of his 1886 facsimile, Alice's Adventures Under Ground (1886). provenance: Private Collection of Justin Schiller, Christie's New York, Wednesday 9 December 1998, Lot 15.         Autograph Letter Signed from Czechoslovak Independence Movement Leader and Future President EDUARD BENES

      - BENES, EDUARD. (1884-1948). Czechoslovak statesman; president from 1935-38 and 1946-48. ALS. ("Eduard Benes" and "E.B."). 2¼pp. 8vo. Paris, August 27, N.y. [between 1916 and 1918]. On stationery of the Czechoslovak National Council. To French Anthropologist Dr. Arthur Chervin. In French with translation. "I have tried to find a map of Serbia, but I am sorry that I have not found anything of the sort you want. I do not have a general staff map, and what I have here is not detailed enough. But in a week I will receive a German atlas where I hope to find the maps you are looking for. If you could wait a little longer, I would be very glad to make this atlas available to you. I am sorry that I cannot help you at this very moment. With my very best wishes, I am yours respectfully. - P.S. Surely you know that in the book by [Louis] Niederle La Race Slav there are references, obviously not quite sufficient, that might be of help to you." During World War I, Benes emerged as one of the leaders of the Czech independence movement, which sought autonomy from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, of which it had long been a part. In 1915, Benes traveled to Paris to garner foreign support for the movement, forming the Czechoslovak National Council there in 1916. For two years he served as the organization's secretary as well as minister of the interior and foreign affairs for the provisional Czechoslovak government. Upon the declaration of Czech independence signed by Benes in 1918, he became the new country's first foreign minister, a position he held until 1935 when he replaced Tomás Masaryk as president. Much of his presidency was spent in exile because of the nation's dismemberment under the terms of the Munich Pact concluded between Great Britain and Germany. During World War II, he headed a provisional government in London, returning home at the war's end to become president for the second time in 1946, holding office until shortly after the Communist takeover two years later. Chervin is the author of Bolivian Anthropology, Some Skulls of Estonians and Military Anthropometry. In excellent condition and uncommon in ALS and from this period. * All our items are sent via Federal Express. Additional postage may be requested. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Manual of classical Erotology (De figuris Veneris) . Latin text and literal English version.

Charles Carrington],, 'Manchester One Hundred Copies privately printed for Viscount Julian Smithson M.A. and friends' [Paris 1884 - First edition of this important parallel English, Latin and Greek version. It followed a poor piracy of 1882 badly translated from Liseux's French edition of 1882. Carrington gave a wry veiled account of its publication in his 1902 catalogue, Forbidden Books: 'Were I a bookseller, I do not think I should ever take the trouble to print such a book as I have now before me. Here is a Latin work, full of notes, and bristling with Greek quotations. A most careful and masterly translation has been placed opposite every page of the original text, and it needs no literary critic to see that no one but a real classical scholar-an old Oxford man-could ever have successfully struggled with such a task . The two stout volumes have evidently been printed on the Continent-and for very good and valid reasons, as no English printer would dare to undertake such a work,- therefore each page would have to be submitted to the translator, at least three or four times, foreign compositors working mechanically. Many months would thus pass in wearisome proof-reading, and when at last the hundred copies are struck off, and each man receives his due, what margin of profit awaits the silly bookseller-publisher? He is insulted in every way and laughed at if he dares to wonder that the British Customs seize any copies .'Carrington published some 300 titles (some using his own name and others using false imprints, as here) mainly in Paris where he lived from about 1894 until 1907, selling books from a shop in the Faubourg Montmartre. He notably printed a number of works by Oscar Wilde when few other publishers would risk implication in Wilde's downfall and, besides outright pornography, he printed a number of editions of classical and oriental authors and important works on the psychology of sex. In 1907 he was deported from France for consistently publishing and selling literature "of a very obscene and vulgar character". He continued his publishing business in Brussels before returning to Paris in 1912. By 1920 Carrington was blind from the effects of advanced syphilis, being admitted to the mental hospital at Ivry, south of Paris, where he died in 1921. 2 vols, 8vo (200 × 130 mm), pp. xviii, 261, [1]; [4], 250, [2]. Partially uncut and preserved with the original wrappers in early twentieth-century half morocco, spines attractively gilt with floral tools and onlays, top edge gilt. Inkstamps of Charles S. Dixwell to front free endpapers. An excellent copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Amedeo MODIGLIANI

      - Amedeo MODIGLIANI (1884.1920) Lettre autographe signée à Paulette Philippi dite « Manon ». Deux pages ½ in-8° sur papier quadrillé. Paris. (1906-1910). Apollinaire a fumé.
