WINNIPEG 1884 [BIRD'S-EYE VIEW OF WINNIPEG] [Map]

Ottawa, ON: Mortimer & Co., Lith.. A large three-colour map measuring 82 x 106 cms. 1884. 1st printing. The map show some minor edge-chipping, mainly at the top and bottom. The colours are bright and the map is free of staining. . A beautiful example of one of the "bird's-eye" maps so popular in the last half of the 19th century. This is a particularly fine example, showing the burgeoning City of Winnipeg, only fourteen years after the Province of Manitoba became the fifth province admitted into the Canadian Confederation, and eleven years after the incorporation of the city itself. The map shows the city just after the coming of the railway in 1881, and just before the building of Winnipeg's curious "gingerbread" city hall in 1887. The famous corner of Portage and Main is clearly displayed, although Portage Avenue is identified as Queen Street (the name wasn't changed until 1891). The map shows six large steamboats on the Red River, three of which are side-wheelers - a bit of artistic (cartographic?) licence, as the Winnipeg rivers were only navigable to stern wheelers and none of the vessels shown could have navigated under the two fixed bridges - the original Main Street bridge built in 1881 and Winnipeg's first bridge, the Louise Bridge, built a year or two earlier. Bordering the map are 15 circular views of notable buildings, and four larger views - one in each corner - of two private residences and two businesses (presumably sponsors of this map). Population totals and assessed value of property are shown for 1872, 1880, and 1883. At the bottom centre of the map is a cartouche showing an Indian in headress looking out over the prairie, below which is printed: "Entered according to the Act of Parliament of Canada in the year 1884 by W. G. Fonseca in the Office of the Minister of Education." .

A Monthly Journal devoted to all subjects connected with Her Majesty's Land and Sea Forces. Five volumes.

Published for the Proprietors at the Offfice of 'The Illustrated london News,' 198, Strand, London. 1884-86 - Large 4to. 10 x 12 inches. Typically each volume comprises approximately 432 pp. and is illustrated by around 12 plates (with three in colour from October 1886) and some half-dozen folding or double page plates, maps or distribution lists and numerous engravings in text. Bound in blue cloth, gilt, with blind stamped decorated borders to boards, enclosing central Winged Victory, with weapons; spine decorated with double gilt lines top and bottom. Extremities worn and spine edges chipped. Very clean internally. A near complete run of this very lavishly produced and illustrated periodical, which ceased publication after the final volume (Vol.6 of 1890). Of particular note are the folding distribution lists of British naval and land forces, including the Indian army, but there are also valuable accounts of the armed forces of the major European powers and of the principal steamship companies of the British merchant fleet. It includes articles on fortresses such as Gibraltar, on naval warfare, biographies of Victoria Cross holders, and accounts of recent or current conflicts such as the Crimean War and campaigns in Sudan and Afghanistan. Historical articles examine the English Civil War and the battles of Frederick the Great and the Napoleonic wars. Other topics include coverage of recent developments in magazine rifles and artillery, and the military applications of ballooning, photography and telephony. There are even articles on 'An experimental donkey' and 'The life of the upper ten thousand. Eton and Harrow.' Of particular interest to naval enthusiasts will be the many fine engravings of contemporary ironclads, torpedo boats, etc. NAVAL/MILITARY ILLUSTRATED NAVAL/MILITARY

Two chromolithographs, four etchings, four illus. of the chromatic circle on two plates, six full-page silhouettes, two photolithographs, two leaves of limitation & colophon, & eleven tipped-in paper samples. Printed on 44 different kinds of paper & in many colors. Two parts in one vol. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers bound-in orig. citron morocco signed by Canapé-Beltz; covers panelled in gilt with red, green, & blue morocco inlays; spine divided into six compartments, five with red & black inlays, dentelles gilt with red morocco inlays, a.e.g. [Blois: R. Marchand, 1884]. First edition, and a magnificently bound copy of this tour-de-force of book- and papermaking, limited to 250 numbered copies, signed by the author and the publisher. Originally issued in separate fascicles, this is a remarkable, complex, and beautiful book, printed on 44 different kinds of paper and employing complex combinations of color and printing techniques. The book was issued to demonstrate the newest techniques of printing and styles of book design. The first three sections contain essays on the history of paper, ink, and the use of color in printing. This third part is particularly dazzling as each typographical border of every page has been printed using different color combinations to demonstrate the contrasts and harmonies of combining colors. The second part - "Applications" - is printed on various kinds of tinted paper (mostly coming from various named French mills but including a few Dutch and English mills), all printed and decorated employing flamboyant combinations of types and ink colors. Eleven original samples of rare papers, from ancient papyrus to modern Japanese, are tipped-in at end. Rochas d'Aiglun (1837-1914), was a leading French parapsychologist, historian, translator, writer, military engineer, and administrator. He wrote important works on military engineering history, ancient technology, hydraulic organs, water clocks, ancient surveying instruments, temple machinery, Greek artillery, and ancient railways. This copy contains a presentation inscription from Rochas to Gaston Tissandier (1843-99), the French chemist, meteorologist, aviator, and editor, on the added portrait of Rochas. This portrait has been especially inserted and is not present in most copies. Very fine copy preserved in the original chemise and slipcase.

Upper page extremity repairs to pp. 447-486 with no significant loss, otherwise a clean copy of an important set of documents related to the ill-fated Jeanette expedition commanded by Capt. George W. DeLong. Very Scarce. This volume presents the detailed transcriptions of a series of investigations related to the failure of the "Jeannette" expedition, during which George DeLong with two of three parties lost their lives in the retreat from the abandoned "Jeannette" north of the Siberian coastline. The findings of the inquiry are summarized in the opening pages, which underline the failure by George Melville, leader of the surviving party, to seek assistance from the Russian authorities for resulting in the total loss the other parties. The transcriptions contain an extensive amount of information relating to the conduct, experiences, and aftermath of the "Jeannette" expedition. Included are the transcribed testimonies of George Melville, Raymond Newcomb, William Nindemann, John Danenhower, Emma DeLong, William Schentze, and many others.         Sammelband mit 135 Plakaten und gr. Programmzetteln zu einem Gastspiel in München.

München, 19. Mai - 14. August 1884.
