Superb presentation signed photo, (George Albert, 1853-1884, 4th Son of Queen Victoria, Duke of Albany, a haemophiliac, died after an accident on 28th March in Cannes)

1884 - the head and shoulders image is signed underneath and set in an oval silver mount, black pleated fabric surrounds this and the gilt metal crest above and the whole is framed in an ebonised and carved inner frame which is finally inclosed in a black lacquer and gilt box frame, the picture is 5½" x 4" and the final size is 17½" x 11", no place, In the spring of 1884 his health was poor and so he was sent to the south of France. At first he seemed to benefit from the change, but a fall in a clubhouse at Cannes led to an attack of epilepsy, of which he died at the Villa Nevada on 28th March. The funeral took place in St. George's Chapel, Windsor, on 6th April. He left a daughter & a posthumous son, born in July. Queen Victoria assembled several of these mourning gifts but this is the first one I have seen outside a Royal collection. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

New Orleans - The Crescent City - Lake Pontchartrain in the Distance.

New York. Harper's Weekly. 12-13- 1884. Oversized black and white wood engraving, Supplement to Harper's Weekly of December 13, 1884, sheet size approximately 22 x 31 3/4 inches, professionally restored and mounted on linen, with original folds minimised. Very good, clean condition. A handsome bird's eye view looking down on the waterfront with a view of the city and Lake Pontchartain in the far distance. The harbor is busy with steamers lined up and cargo being loaded and unloaded. Many of the city landmarks are carefully delineated and marked in a legend beneath the image: Exposition Buildings and Grounds, Shot-Tower, Lee Monument, Lafayette Square, St. Charles Hotel, Hotel Royal, Opera House, Jackson Square and Cathedral, French Market, and Railroad Ferry. The large Harper's Weekly supplements such as this are much scarcer than the centrefold views. This bird's eye view by Charles Graham, who made something of a specialty of city views, provides a vivid portrait of the New Orleans of 130 years ago.

Huckleberry Finn - Civil War November 1884 to April 1888 Century Monthly Magazine Series First American Printing of Huckleberry Finn, Memoranda on the Civil War

1884. soft. Fine. Original Edition The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine November 1884 - to - April 1888 Volumes 7 - to - 13 These 7 volumes, each one containing 6 original issues (42 issues), comprise one of the most desirable and highly sought after classics. Original text block beautifully rebound in black leather and buckram with gild lettering. The December 1884 issue contains the First American Printing of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain . Each issue contains the Famous Series entitled Battles and Leaders of the Civil War . These volumes contain this complete series . The publishers contracted with leaders on both sides of the Civil War to write their first hand accounts and details of the significant battles and events. U.S.Grant was paid $1,000.00 of each of 4 articles. Grant later included these articles in his 2 volume set memoirs. The series drew so much interest that it lasted for three years. Among the contributors to the series besides Grant were Union generals, William Tecumseh Sherman , Philip Sheridan , and George B. McClellan . As The Century tried to avoid bias and promote American unity, it also sought out and accepted accounts from those on the Confederate side, including the generals James Longstreet and P.G.T. Beauregard . The contributions led readers who had served in the war to submit unsolicited recollections and previously unpublished documents to the magazine, in addition to criticisms and rebuttals of published pieces. These submissions were so numerous that in 1885 The Century began to include them in a section titled "Memoranda on the Civil War". (sources include Wikipedia) Quote - These war papers created in this country the greatest interest ever felt in any series of articles published in a magazine There are so many Firsts in this set that they are too numerous to mention here.         Diary of Ten Years of an Early Settler in Western Australia; and also A Descriptive Vocabulary of the Language of the Aborigines.

London: M. Walbrook, 1884. Octavo, in original gilt lettered publisher's blue cloth. A detailed first-hand account of pioneering days at the Swan River settlement. The author, an Irish candidate for the Bar, was attracted by the lure of large land grants in Western Australia and travelled to the colony in 1830. This book publishes Moore's correspondence with friends, family and colleagues in Britain; so forming a valuable account of day-to-day life interspersed with gossip, natural history observations and other details. Diary of Ten Years of an Early Settler is a significant record of interpersonal contacts between early colonists. The party was guided by 'Mr. Dale, an officer in the 60th regiment, the first who had penetrated beyond the Range, was selected to point out the most practical route'. Lieutenant Robert Dale, explorer and draughtsman, is today best remembered for his magnificent lithographic panorama of the Swan River settlement.Much of Moore's book records his personal contacts with Aboriginal tribes, and a descriptive vocabulary exceeding 100 pages forms and appendix with a separate title-page and preface.         Journals of Australian Explorations.

Brisbane: James C. Beal, Government Printer, 1884. Octavo, in the original blind-embossed and gilt lettered green cloth, bookplate. Remarkably fine copy in original condition of the complete edition of the journals of eight expeditions undertaken by the Gregory brothers in Western, Northern and Central Australia between 1846 and 1861. This was the first comprehensive publication of the Gregory journals, many of which had not been printed before in their entirety. The Gregory brothers played an important role in the history of exploration in Western Australia, and Augustus also led expeditions further afield into unmapped regions of the continent. In 1855, on Governor FitzRoy's recommendation, Augustus Gregory was selected by the British Government to lead the North Australian Exploring Expedition. The party of eighteen included his brother Henry as second-in-command, the botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, and the naturalist and artist Thomas Baines. Starting from the mouth of the Victoria River in August 1855, Gregory covered over five thousand miles in his sixteen-month expedition opening up vast areas for pastoral settlement. He was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society on his return and is one of the greatest inland Australian explorers. In 1858 Gregory made one further expedition in search of Ludwig Leichhardt and his party, but was forced by drought to abandon the search. This book includes material related to the search.Francis Gregory served his apprenticeship under his brother Augustus in Perth. His exploration with the North West Australian Exploring Expedition of 1861 was to become the basis for later pastoral settlements on the north-west coast. A fresh bright copy.

Recherches sur la Conductibilité Galvanique des Électrolytes. I: La conductibilté des solutions aqueuses extrêmement diluées déterminée au moyen du dépolarisateur. II: Théorie chimique des électrolytes.

First edition Stockholm: P.A. Norstedt, 1884. The rare offprint issue of Arrhenius's landmark discovery of the theory of electrolytic disassociation. Arrhenius was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation." By 1880, "it was known that solutions of certain compounds conduct electricity and that chemical reactions could occur when a current was passed. It was thought that the current decomposed the substance. In 1883 Arrhenius proposed a theory that substances were partly converted into an active form when dissolved. The active part was responsible for conductivity. In the case of acids and bases, he correlated the strength with the degree of decomposition on solution. This work was published as Reserches sur la conductibilite galvanique des electrolytes (1884; Researches on the Electrical Conductivity of Electrolytes) and submitted as his doctoral dissertation... Arrhenius sent his work to several leading physical chemists, including Jacobus van't Hoff. Friedrich Ostwald, and Rudolf Clausius, who were immediately impressed" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). Arrhenius soon gained high international acclaim, ultimately being awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work. 8vo: 225 x 145 mm. Original printed wrappers, uncut and unopened, a very fine and completely unmarked copy, pp. [2], [1-3] 4-63 [1:blank] and 1 lithographed plate; [1-3] 4-89 [1:blank]. Rare.

        Etudes de dynamique chimique

Amsterdam: Frederik Müller, 1884. 1st Edition. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo., [4] [i] ii-iv, [1] 2-214 [2] pp., text wood-engravings. Original publishers wrappers, creased and dust soiled in margins. Upper spine chipped (professionally restored). Provenance: Strychnin specialist Prof. Franz Feist, with his ex-libris on title page. ----Partington IV, pp. 658-60; Norman 2129. RARE FIRST EDITION, THE BIRTH OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY. Groundbreaking publication of Dutch chemist Van 't Hoff. Van't Hoff's treatise on chemical dynamics, in the words of his colleague Arrhenius, "develop[ed] an imposing and harmonious scheme for the whole subject of chemical influences and actions" (Partington IV, p.658). It dealt with reaction velocity, the theory of equilibrium, and the theory of affinity as based on free energy. Van't Hoff classified reaction velocities into unimolecular, bimolecular and multimolecular, wrote the equation for the effect of temperature on the equilibrium constant, and formulated the principle of mobile equilibrium (at constant volume, equilibriums tend to shift in such a direction as to oppose temperature changes imposed on a system) that became the basis of the Van't Hoff-Le Châtelier principle. In 1901 Van't Hoff received the first Nobel Prize in chemistry, in part for his work in chemical dynamics (Norman 2129). Near Fine.
