        Leaves Of Grass.

13.5 x 22cm. Frontispiece, 382 pages, with 12 page publisher's catalogue to rear. Original hardcover with gilt lettering in protective Mylar. Very good condition, binding and boards solid with minor signs of shelf wear to spine. Endpapers browned, text bright. Previous owner's name and date (1884) on front free endpaper. Some annotations to rear of book. This is the 1884 edition of Walt Whitman's "Leaves of Grass". In 1855, Whitman published his first edition of the book, a slim volume consisting of twelve untitled poems and a preface. He designed the cover, and typeset and paid for the printing of the book himself. Upon the completion, he sent a copy to Ralph Waldo Emerson, who praised it so highly that Whitman reprinted the letter, in subsequent editionswithout obtaining Emersons permission. The letter from Emerson included the now famous line: I greet you at the beginning of a great career. A year later, in 1856, Whitman released a second edition of the book with a total of thirty-three poems. Over the course of his life, Whitman continued to rework and enlarge the volume, publishing several more editions of the book. The version left in 1892, at the time of his death, contained 383 poems, including When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloomd and O Captain! My Captain! both written to memorialize President Lincoln. Well-known poems in the 1855 edition include I Sing the Body Electric," The Sleepers," and Song of Myself, " a long poem in fifty-two sections, which is considered by many to be his masterpiece. The critical and popular response to Leaves of Grass was overwhelmingly positive. One critic noted, in an 1855 review in Life Illustrated, It is like no other book that ever was written, and therefore, the language usually employed in notices of new publications is unavailable in describing it. Unusually prescient, even now, Leaves of Grass has become an unavoidable influence on American poetry. [From poetsdotorg]

        Leaves of Grass

David McKay, No. 23 South Ninth Street, Philadelphia 1884 - Reprint of the Rees Welsh edition of 1882 (which, in turn, reprinted the sixth, banned edition published in Boston), with integral title page; in effect, the second Philadelphia edition. 8vo: 382pp, single leaf with Samuel Hollyer 's steel-engraved portrait of Whitman and tissue guard inserted following p. 28. Publisher's finely woven mustard-yellow S cloth (BAL binding A), spine and upper cover lettered and decorated in gilt, mottled blue vein-pattern end papers. A superb example, about Fine, binding square and tight, gilt undiminished, contents clean, fresh, and bright. BAL 21630. Myerson . Grolier American 100, 67. In June, 1882, Whitman signed an agreement with the Philadelphia publisher Rees Welsh & Co. to bring out Leaves of Grass using the Osgood plates of the sixth, banned edition. (On March 1, the District Attorney of Boston advised James R. Osgood & Co. that Leaves of Grass fell "within the provisions of the Public Statutes respecting obscene literature" and advised Osgood to "withdraw" and "suppress" the book. Osgood asked Whitman to expunge the offending passages; Whitman, by and large, refused, and Osgood "decline[d] to further circulate the book.") That same year, in October, after Rees Welsh had issued the first Philadelphia edition, David McKay, a young Scottish immigrant, took over the business from Rees Welsh and became Whitman's friend, strong supporter, and publisher. Two years later, McKay reprinted the Rees Welsh edition of 1882 with new title page and binding to match the banned Osgood edition. "Whitman's name appears twice on the binding, once in a gold stamped framed facsimile autograph on the front cover, and again on the spine, where the name forms the very ground of the 'Leaves of Grass' that appear above his name in both words and visual emblems, as if the leaves are literally growing from Walt Whitman. . . . And on down the spine is Whitman's beloved hand and butterfly emblem, now with the butterfly-soul appearing on the verge of taking leave of the body-hand: Whitman, still suffering the aftereffects of a stroke, was now convinced his life was near its end. The odd yellowish-olive cast of the cover cloth suggests autumn now instead of the summer-green of the early editions, and the tall grass on the spine looks like hay ready for the harvest. . . . Whitman never again created a new edition of Leaves, though he did add two 'annexes' and repackaged the book in different ways." (Folsom, Whitman Making Books/Books Making Whitman) N.B. Binding slightly worn and rubbed, upper hinge split. Tear to inner margins of index leaves and pp. 153-160, not affecting text; some page numbers and "Au Ménestrel" handstamp slightly cropped. Second edition. Manon, to a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Philippe Gille after Antoine-François Prévost's novel L'histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut (1731), was first performed in Paris at the Opéra-Comique (Salle Favart) on January 19, 1884. The passage from which Massenet has quoted is printed on p. 94 (measures 4 and 5) of the present score. "... In Manon herself Massenet created a portrait of the eternal feminine to rank with Mélisande and Lulu, and it is on this that the opera's appeal rests... In the final analysis Manon is by way of being a 'highlights' opera, lacking the cohesion and economy of more mature Massenet works, but those highlights were seldom surpassed in the composer's oeuvre."         Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám, the Astronomer-Poet of Persia. Rendered in English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald with an Accompaniment of Drawings by Elihu Vedder.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1884. Folio. (57), (viii)ff. First deluxe edition. One of 100 copies, printed on Japanese paper and signed by the artist on the limitation page. The fifty-seven Art-Nouveau illustrations, drawn in pencil, ink, chalk, and watercolor over ten months from May 1883 to March 1884, are here printed on Japanese paper using a then-new photographic printing process which could accurately reproduce the subtle gradations of the originals. Each image is mounted on a larger folded sheet for binding, leaving large margins to frame the image at the center. Vedder's design work is not just limited to the illustrations, but includes everything from the hand-written text to the design of the binding and endpapers. Eight pages at the end of the book have printed notes and an index of illustrations. The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a loose collection of quatrains, was first translated from Persian to English in 1859 by Edward Fitzgerald, over 700 years after the death of the author. It is clear that the most celebrated manifestation of Fitzgerald's translation is this 1884 arrangement by Elihu Vedder. Born in America, Vedder was one of the first artists of his generation to train in Paris. This training in the Academic style, with its emphasis on the classically proportioned female nude, combined with his penchant for mystical imagery and "visionary" style created the perfect style for the Rubaiyat, blending grounded, accurate reality with the excesses of feeling and emotion. Perhaps the emotion so evident in his drawings stems from the fact that the Rubaiyat was intensely personal for Vedder. After twice experiencing the loss of one of his children followed by the birth of another child within the year, he sought and found answers in Khayyam's message that the meaning of life was life itself and that death and renewal are part of that cycle. Vedder's rearrangement of the stanzas to fall into three sections--joy, death, and rebirth--echoes this revelation. Vedder also channels this conception into his art, which combines Christian and Classical figures with mystical imagery, like the "cosmic swirl," which he describes as "gradual concentration of elements that combine to form life; the sudden pause through the reverse of the movement which marks the instant of life; and then the gradual, ever-widening dispersion again of those elements into space." The first edition of Vedder's interpretation, which comprised both this deluxe edition and a regular edition with a printed cover and typeface text, was released in Boston on November 8, 1884, and sold out within six days. Later editions were smaller and used a half-tone screen process, meaning that only this first edition has truly fine renderings of Vedder's work. Interestingly, this is the text block that was used in Sangorski and Sutcliffe's legendary (but unlucky) jeweled binding, The Great Omar. In the original gilt-tooled morocco binding, with decorated silk doublures and large, elaborately gilt dentelles. A.e.g. Housed in a custom drop-back box. Foxing to the paper used to mount the illustrations, but rarely on the illustrations themselves, else a near fine copy of Vedder's masterwork. (Smithsonian American Art Museum, online Vedder Exhibition).

Superb presentation signed photo, (George Albert, 1853-1884, 4th Son of Queen Victoria, Duke of Albany, a haemophiliac, died after an accident on 28th March in Cannes)

1884 - the head and shoulders image is signed underneath and set in an oval silver mount, black pleated fabric surrounds this and the gilt metal crest above and the whole is framed in an ebonised and carved inner frame which is finally inclosed in a black lacquer and gilt box frame, the picture is 5½" x 4" and the final size is 17½" x 11", no place, In the spring of 1884 his health was poor and so he was sent to the south of France. At first he seemed to benefit from the change, but a fall in a clubhouse at Cannes led to an attack of epilepsy, of which he died at the Villa Nevada on 28th March. The funeral took place in St. George's Chapel, Windsor, on 6th April. He left a daughter & a posthumous son, born in July. Queen Victoria assembled several of these mourning gifts but this is the first one I have seen outside a Royal collection. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Fascinating series of 27 Autograph Letters Signed to Frank F. Mewburn, (Walter William, 1848-1933, Portrait Painter, RA. 1881)

1884 - (born 1820 or 1821, Solicitor & Collector, of Larchfield, Darlington), and 1 autograph envelope, with many insights into the values of a fine young artist, his growing portrait practice, (including Charles Darwin's, 1875), good and bad hanging at the R.A., many comments on older painters including Holman Hunt and what his own contemporaries are doing, leisure snatched in a busy life, and the effect of London fog, with much gratitude for Mewburn's continuous support and introductions to his friends in the North, often in racy language, "I am sorry the portraits seem to them cross looking but all my portraits are more or less so. I cannot do the smile fearing a smirk . I am furious at their hanging my Chemist above the line and that odious Mayor of Newcastle on the line . I was delighted to receive your kind congratulations" (on being elected A.R.A.), with a Checklist of extracts, 146 sides 8vo, the envelope from Utrecht, 1st October 1880, the letters nearly all from 43 Bloomsbury Square, London, 1872-1875, 1877 & first 4 sides only present of 2 letters, some cross-writing (easily read), some a trifle dusty but generally in good condition CHECKLIST 1. 20th November 1872. 43 Bloomsbury Square, London. Thanking Mewburn "for again interesting yourself so kindly on my behalf" and discussing Mewburn's suggestion of painting Mr Barmingham of Darlington, once he has got further for the next Academy submission in April, and of painting Edmund Backhouse, (1824-1906, Banker & M.P. for Darlington), as a companion to Macbeth's portrait, extolling the virtues of 50" x 40" against "full-length . with our confounded modern costume" at a much higher price. 7 sides 8vo. 2. 1st December 1872. Expressing his regret at the "alarming attack of illness" of Mrs Mewburn, (Mewburn's mother Elizabeth), he yet hopes he "may be able to do something that would afford you pleasure" and will be delighted to paint Mr Backhouse. 4 sides 8vo. 3. 14th December 1872. Thanking him for the photograph of Mewburn's father (Francis, Promoter and Solicitor, 1819-1828, of the Stockton & Darlington Railway), but explaining in great detail why a posthumous portrait would be unsatisfactory, "the colour, the freshness and vigour of each touch and all the little accidents which working from nature enable me to get . can never be got from a photograph", asking in a P.S. "May I keep the Carte of your father? . It is so full of strong character". 7 sides 8vo. 4. 4th April 1873. His picture "was not finished enough to send in . a succession of infernal fogs . clean knocked me out . I shall make a very much finer thing of it", but it was "deuced hard lines", he will "turn it to the wall" and have a week "down to the coast and through the New Forest", he had a Private View of John Phillips' pictures - by Jingo for . strength of colour they lick all modern work out and out". and praising 'old Marks' pictures" in similar language. 6 sides 8vo. 5. 30th April 1873. "You will be glad to hear I am well hung at the R.A. - three in No. 1 and one on the line in No. 2", he talks enthusiastically of their placing and of members' compliments, "I tell you all this unhesitatingly", Mewburn's "kind interest . makes me feel sure you will be 'joyous in my joy'", he is giving his large picture 'Love & Duty' a rest. 4 sides 8vo. 6. 6th May 1873. "That notice in Saturdays Times was . a jolly good lift.- for what Tom Taylor writes must influence thousands", talking of the Macbeth family's submissions, "This R.A. business is a terrible lottery", he regrets "the unpleasantness between yourself and Marks", to see Haddon Hall one day "is one of my dreams", he describes the visit of Jozef Israëls (1824-1911), "I started him with palette and brushes and in an instant he was off . he is about the size of a tin-tack and somewhat of a similar shape . he bangs away like a blacksmith . though a severe doctor his suggestions were most valuable". 8 sides 8vo. 7. 20th June 1873.
