        A Misty Morning, Drifting

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1884. Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card. 14 3/8 x 20 5/8 inches. (of mount) 21 x 27 inches. Frederic Cozzens was one of America's greatest marine artists. Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. A Misty Morning, Drifting depicts the steamer Utowana gliding by the idle Nokomis, Crusader and Hildegard, which patiently drift in the calm waters of a windless morning. Jacobsen, Frederic Cozzens. Marine Painter, New York: 1982.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, The Astronomer-Poet of Persia. Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald. With an accompaniment of drawings by Elihu Vedder

Boston: Printed for Houghton, Mifflin and Company, n.d. (1884)., 1884. Folio size Vedder Illustrated Edition (41 x 5 cm). Publisher's dark brown cloth elaborately decorated and titled in gilt to upper cover and spine, top edge gilt; decorative end papers to paste downs, plain grey to flyleaf. In its original light grey pictorial dust jacket, repeating the design from the book in dark blue and white to spine and upper. 64 thick board sheets on guards of which 56 with illustrations and text; an introduction to Omar Khayyam and Notes on the Text, both taken from Fitzgerald's version of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat, fill the other pages. The book is splendid: a sound and bright copy with only a slight bumping to corners and a little rubbing to spine ends. The bright dust jacket is frayed along extremities with a few small closed tears and nicks; a little spotting to back panel. A remarkable example.

        Lettre autographe signée.

Avignon, 11. IX. 1884. - 4p in-12 (70 lignes environ).

Mistral devoted his life to the recording, championing and composing of Occitan literature and language (the Langue d'Oc), and Nerto was published while Mistral was in the process of creating his Lou Tresor dóu Félibrige (1878-1886), which is still the most comprehensive dictionary of the Occitan language. Frederic Mistral won the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of the fresh originality and true inspiration of his poetic production, which faithfully reflects the natural scenery and native spirit of his people, and, in addition, his significant work as a Provençal philologist". Mistral specifically cited "Nerto", along with a few of his other major works, in his autobiographical profile written in connection with the award of the Prize to him and, in his speech presenting the Prize to Mistral, C.D. af Wirsén, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, described the work as one that "offers many beautiful pages for the reader's admiration." This is a PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the half title, by Mistral to the important Parisian writer, publisher and literary editor Edouard Champion as follows: "A Monsieur Champion, l'éditeur du poète philologic, hommage cordial, F. Mistral" and contains 8 autograph letters signed by Mistral, all addressed to Edouard Champion between 1896 and 1905, and most of a literary concern. Signed copies of "Nerto" are quite uncommon, and signed Association copies, as offered here, are scarce. An Association copy of Mistral's "Nerto" SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY FREDERIC MISTRAL TO THE IMPORTANT LITERARY FIGURE EDOUARD CHAMPION TOGETHER WITH 8 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED BY MISTRAL TO CHAMPION. A RARE COPY WITH A REMARKABLE NINE FREDERIC MISTRAL SIGNATURES.

1884. Illustrated. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1884. 32 pp ads dated Sept 1883. Original grey-brown cloth decorated in black, red and cream. First British edition of Part I of one of Verne's scarcest titles. It is an odd tale, combining adventure, travel and intrigue: after Keraban the Turk takes two Dutch business associates across the Bosphorus for dinner, a small ferry tax is enacted that so enrages Keraban that he insists all three take "the long way home" -- around the perimeter of the Black Sea. He must make it home in time to arrange a marriage for his nephew, but there are those who don't want him to make it back in time...~KERABAN-LE-TETU first came out in French in 1883, quickly followed by George Munro's pirated American edition in wrappers titled THE HEADSTRONG TURK. Sampson Low published this first UK edition of GUIDARA in November 1884, followed by SCARPANTE THE SPY in April 1885; these two volumes, bound in this unusual pictorial cloth with red highlights, are exceedingly scarce today. There is a secondary binding of green cloth decorated only in black; the "second edition," issued in May 1887, is in that same secondary binding.~Condition is very good. The inner hinges (endpapers) have been discreetly reinforced with narrow strips of matching paper, and the rear cover has some minor soil; the spine ends are rubbed but not torn nor frayed, and the spine is slightly browned (as one would expect with this color cloth). This undoubtedly makes the volume sound worse than it is, for it is overall quite clean and attractive. Very scarce in this primary binding. Taves & Michaluk V025.
