All of these original drawings, which were proclaimed a masterwork of American art, were included in a special exhibition of "Elihu Vedder's Drawings for the Rubaiyat" at the National Museum of American Art in 1998. The exhibition also included two first edition printings of this Rubaiyat with Vedder's "accompaniments." Vedder's edition was an instant success, selling out only six days after its debut in Boston on November 8, 1884. With the Rubaiyat, Vedder set the standard for artist-designed books in America and England. Critics rushed to acclaim it as a masterwork. Vedder is best known for his illustrations of this edition of The Rubaiyat. He died in Rome, Italy, in 1923. The World's Industrial And Cotton Centennial Exposition, New Orleans, LA., U. S. A. Department of Installation. Plan No. 2 Map of the City of New Orleans

New Orleans, 1884. No Binding. Very Good. 26 5/8 x 36 ½ inches. Lithograph. Fold wear with some losses; flattened & mounted on acid-free paper; very good. A large, visually rich plan of New Orleans made for visitors to the 1884-1885 World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exhibition. Held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the exportation of cotton from the United States, the exposition was one of the most ambitious world's fairs ever held. Audubon Park in present-day New Orleans would develop on the exposition's grounds. Although plagued by various problems, the fair did boast an array of impressive structures, including its main building, which was reputed to the world's largest wooden structure at the time. This building and several others, along with a full view and plan of the exposition grounds, are illustrated here. There are also an inset plan of New Orleans as it was in 1770 and a 1719 view of the nascent city. The large plan of the city itself is extremely well detailed, providing not only up-to-date street names throughout the whole city but also the addresses of the structures on them.

        Sandy Hook to the Needles

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1884. Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card. Very good condition apart from a few small brown spots in the lower left and right sides of the image. 14 3/8 x 20 5/8 inches. (of mount) 17 1/2 x 23 1/4 inches. Frederic Cozzens was one of America's greatest marine artists. Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. Sandy Hook to the Needles depicts an exhilarating moment at the beginning of the great race across the Atlantic Ocean to the Needles on the coast of England. It pictures three of the participating yachts, the Fleetwing, Henrietta, and Vesta, racing head to head after having recently embarked from the starting point at Sandy Hook, which is visible in the right distance, on a Tuesday, December 1866.       New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1884. Colour-printed lithograph, removed from the original mount, very fine condition. 14 5/16 x 20 5/8 inches. A Breezy Day, Outside depicts, from left to right, the schooners Columbia, Sappho and Palmer. Columbia was built by Van Deysen in 1871, Palmer built by Byerly and Sons in 1865 and the most noteworthy, Sappho built by Poillon Brothers in 1867. The schooner Sappho famously made a run of 318 miles in sixteen days, three hours and twenty six minutes, one of her four victories in international races. Jacobsen, Frederic Cozzens.         FOUR WORKS: HISTORY OF OUR OWN TIMES. THE FOUR GEORGES & WILLIAM IV. THE FRENCH REVOLUTION. THE REIGN OF QUEEN ANNE

Chatto & Windus London: Chatto & Windus, 1884. FIRST EDITIONS of the last three works. 222 x 143 mm (8 3/4 x 5 5/8").15 volumes. Pleasing contemporary dark blue three-quarter morocco by Bickers & Son (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), raised bands, spine gilt in single-ruled compartments, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt.Tiny chip to top of one spine, three joints with short cracks at head, minor dulling from leather preservative, first volume with hinge open at rear (but the volume quite sound), one leaf with older tissue paper repair to head-edge tear (into text, but legibility not lost), other trivial defects, but still quite an attractive set in excellent condition, clean and fresh internally, and in bright, solid bindings showing little wear. This is an appealing group of four scarce works, three of them first editions, by a father and son who also wrote novels, and brought the same engaging, readable style to their non-fiction. Justin McCarthy (1830-1912) was a journalist and novelist whose major work "History of Our Own Times" (1878) was an enormously popular account of Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria, written from a Liberal point of view. It went to a number of editions, and our 1901 edition of his major work covers the accession of Queen Victoria to the General Election of 1880 in four volumes, with a fifth volume supplement updating the history to the queen's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. McCarthy began publishing "History of the Four Georges and William IV" in 1884, but failing eyesight and ill health forced him to hand the work over to his son for completion; volume II appeared in 1890, and volumes III and IV in 1901. Justin Huntly McCarthy (1859-1936) penned two histories of his own, included here: "The French Revolution" (1890, 1897; four volumes) and "Queen Anne" (1902; two volumes).

Autograph Letter, signed, to "Ethel" [Hatch]

Christ Church Oxford jan.30/'84 1884 "Christ Church", [Oxford], jan.30/'84 [1884]. 12mo. 4pp. in Dodgson's purple ink. Fine. In quarter purple morocco and cloth drop case with descriptive lettering in gilt on upper cover. Cohen, p. 527 . A touching letter. Ethel being almost certainly one of Dodgson's favorite 'child-friends', Ethel Hatch: "My dear Ethel, "I think it will have to be YOU that settles the 'which' as to the new book: but the 'when' is quite another matter. It is quite a High School sort of question - 'If anticipation gives happiness, what will 40 years of anticipation give?" ANS: '40 years of happiness!' My only fear is that is would be too much happiness for you. Still, I know you are a VERY good girl (at least, all the people who live in Canterbury Row, & in that neighbourhood, have never told me anything to the contrary), so I say to myself 'Yes! She DOES deserve it. She shall have 40 years of happiness!' "Give B [eatrice Hatch] my love, & thanks for her letter: & as she now does a 'different sort' of work from the High School, I send her a question to work out; the like of which was NEVER set there. 'If it is odd to have an undergraduate brother, what is it to have two?' ANSWER: 'Even.' "Please think of me in the year 1924 A.D. and believe me, "Yours always affectionately "CLD"
