. 8°. From the offprint-collection of Percy Williams Bridgman.. Philipp Frank (March 20, 1884, Vienna, Austria - July 21, 1966, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA) was a physicist, mathematician and also an influential philosopher during the first half of the 20th century. He was a logical-positivist, and a member of the Vienna Circle. He was born on 20 March 1884 in Vienna, Austria, and died on 21 July 1966 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. He studied physics at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1907 with a thesis in theoretical physics under the supervision of Ludwig Boltzmann. Albert Einstein recommended him as his successor for a professorship at the German Charles-Ferdinand University of Prague, a position which he held from 1912 until 1938. He then emigrated to the United States, where he became a lecturer of physics and mathematics at Harvard University. Astronomer Halton Arp described Frank's Philosophy of Science class at Harvard as being his favorite elective. He was a colleague and admirer of both Mach and Einstein. In lectures given during World War II at Harvard, Frank attributed to Mach himself the following graphic expression of "Mach's Principle": "When the subway jerks, it's the fixed stars that throw you down." In commenting on this formulation of the principle, Frank pointed out that Mach chose the subway for his example because it shows that inertial effects are not shielded (by the mass of the earth): The action of distant masses on the subway-rider's mass is direct and instantaneous. It is apparent why Mach's Principle, stated in this fashion, does not fit with Einstein's conception of the retardation of all distant action. His books include: * Philosophy of Science, Prentice Hall (1957) * Einstein: His Life and Times (1947) * Foundations of Physics (Wikipedia) Philipp Frank (* 20. März 1884 in Wien; 21.

A collection of ca 1700 original pen and wash drawings of plants from the botanical garden at Lemberg, [ca 1862-1872].

. The drawings are on laid paper 215 x 140mm, and preserved in 9 blue folding boxes. A highly unusual archive of botanical illustrations of the botanical garden at Lemberg, now L'viv, Ukraine, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, executed by Adolf Weiss, the pre-eminent Austrian botanist of his day. The drawings are of a very high quality and Weiss was known to be an accomplished artist: "... die seltene Meisterschaft in der Handhabung von Pinsel und Feder macht die Abbildungen... zu den auch künstlerisch vollendesten, die wir besitzen (... the rare mastery and use of the brush and pen make [his] illustrations the most artistically accomplished we have) (Oesterr. Bot. Zeitschrift, 1884). Each drawing shows the plant in flower, with anatomical details supplied below. Most of the sheets have the Linnaean binominals at the foot. Each is surrounded by a border either scored or in pencil, which presumably was intended to indicate the size of an engraved plate. Likewise reference is made at the bottom to Kunth's 'Enumeratio plantarum' (5 vols, 1833-1850) indicating volume and page. All drawings are all in the same style; three have been signed by 'A Weiss del.', and one with initials only. This one shows an 'Aloe marginalis' in a wooden barrel with Weiss' initials A.W. dated 2/3 [18]65 Lemberg. It is a portrayal of the plant as it flowered in the Lemberg botanical garden. Weiss published a paper on the Aloe 'Agave Jacquiniana' which had flowered in the Lemberg Garden in 1864. Weiss was assisted by his wife Hermine, and two drawings bear her signature. In style the drawings are quite accomplished and graceful, and resemble some of the best botanical illustration of the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century. You would not be surprised it you were told there were 75 years earlier. Adolf Weiss (1837-1894) was born at Freiwaldau, Silesia. Between 1855 and 1858 he attended the University of Vienna where he studied botany. In 1862 he was appointed professor of botany and director of the botanic garden at Lemberg, but before taking up this post he undertook a tour of Italy, France, Switzerland and Germany to study botanical gardens in those countries and to forge links between them and Lemberg. Under Weiss's direction, the Lemberg gardens became the finest in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with rare examples of flora of Lemberg and the Carpathians. Weiss published on the flora of Lemberg (1865). Together with Jarolim, an assistant of his institute, he made numerous excursions to collect plants in the Lemberg area and his herbarium was still preserved in the Lemberg University Museum in 1881. In 1872 he moved to the University of Prague, where he founded the first institute of plant physiology in the Empire. Weiss was the undoubtedly the most important Austrian botanist and plant anatomist of his time and is best remembered for his publications on plant anatomy. It is sad that today he is all but forgotten in Lemberg where he did his most important work. Sadder still, there is now scarcely a trace of his fine botanical garden. The present collection therefore remains a unique testament to this influential botanist and his garden. Together with the plates there are some leaves with plant names and numbers; on one there is Weiss' name dated 12.7.65. Oesterr. Bot. Zeitschrift XXXI, 1881 'B. Blocki, Dr. A. Weiss' Herbar im Lemberg Universitätsmuseum'; Oesterr. Bot. Zeitschrift, XXXIV, 1884 'Gallerie österreichischer Botaniker, XXX. G. Adolf Weiss'; Oesterr. Bot. Zeitschrift XLIV 'A. Nestler, G.A. Weiss (obituary); Wurzbach, Biographisches Lexikon des öst. Kaiserstaates, LIV, 82ff..

        Reflections in Palestine, 1883.

London, Macmillan, 1884.. Duodecimo. Pp. x, (2), 124. Plus 3 lithograph maps on 2 plates, printed in black with additional colour by hand. Sketch illustrations to text. Hardcover, original grey cloth, bit discoloured and marked, printed and decorated in red and black. Chalked forest-green endpapers (bookplate removed from front paste-down), first inner hinge mended. In a very good condition, fine interior, crisp maps. ~ First edition. British army General Charles George Gordon (1833-85), popularly known as "Chinese Gordon", served in the Crimean War and in the 1860 expedition to China, where he took part in the capture of Beijing and later commanded the Chinese force against the Taiping Rebellion. Appointed governour of Sudan in 1877, he waged a vigorous campaign against slave traders. He resigned in 1879, and in 1883 travelled to the Holy Land where he remained for a year, devoting his time to the study of Biblical history and of the antiquities of Jerusalem. In 1884 he was called back to service and was sent to the Sudan to defeat the Mahdi. During the campaign he was cut-off and besieged at Khartoum for 10 months. A relief expedition, belatedly dispatched from England, reached the garrison two days after it had been stormed by the Mahdists, who killed Gordon. Gordon's death stirred public indignation and contributed to the collapse of the Gladstone government in 1885. "Reflections in Palestine" is based on Gordon's observations during his year-long visit to the Holy Land. It was published by his friends while he was posted in Khartoum, shortly before his death. The book is divided into Topographical and Religious sections. In the first, Gordon describes in detail the topography and architecture of some of the major holy places he had visited, while the second part is dedicated to the religious contemplations these places has aroused in him. Lytton Strachey, in "Eminent Victorians" (1918), writes this wonderful memoir of Gordon: "During the year 1883, a solitary English gentleman was to be seen, wandering, with a thick book under his arm, in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem. To the friendly inquirer, he would explain that he was engaged in elucidating four questions: the site of the crucifixion; the line of division between the tribes of Benjamin and Judah; the identification of Gibeon; and the position of the Garden of Eden. He was also, he would add, most anxious to discover the spot where the Ark first touched ground, after the subsidence of the Flood: he believed, indeed, that he had solved that problem, as a reference to some passages in the book which he was carrying would show."         Le Livre de Demain

Two chromolithographs, four etchings, four illus. of the chromatic circle on two plates, six full-page silhouettes, two photolithographs, two leaves of limitation & colophon, & eleven tipped-in paper samples. Printed on 44 different kinds of paper & in many colors. Two parts in one vol. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers bound-in cont. red half-morocco & marbled boards, spine richly gilt, t.e.g., others uncut. [Blois: R. Marchand, 1884]. First edition of this tour-de-force of book- and papermaking, limited to 250 numbered copies, signed by the author and the publisher. Originally issued in separate fascicles, this is a remarkable, complex, and beautiful book, printed on 44 different kinds of paper and employing complex combinations of color and printing techniques. The book was issued to demonstrate the newest techniques of printing and styles of book design. The first three sections contain essays on the history of paper, ink, and the use of color in printing. This third part is particularly dazzling as each typographical border of every page has been printed using different color combinations to demonstrate the contrasts and harmonies of combining colors. The second part -- "Applications" -- is printed on various kinds of tinted paper (mostly coming from various named French mills but including a few Dutch and English mills), all printed and decorated employing flamboyant combinations of types and ink colors. Eleven original samples of rare papers, from ancient papyrus to modern Japanese, are tipped-in at end. Rochas d'Aiglun (1837-1914), was a leading French parapsychologist, historian, translator, writer, military engineer, and administrator. He wrote important works on military engineering history, ancient technology, hydraulic organs, water clocks, ancient surveying instruments, temple machinery, Greek artillery, and ancient railways. A few leaves browned but a fine copy and rare. Faint stamp at foot of upper wrapper of A. Bulbena, Barcelona. Lower edge of each board a little bruised. With leather bookplate of Isidoro Fernández (1878-1963). .

        English & Arabic Dictionary

Cairo, [?for the Author,] , 1884. Accompanied by Dialogues & Useful Notes for the Use of the British Army of Occupation. By.... Interpreter to the Commissariat and Transport Staff. Small octavo. (160 × 100 mm). Contemporary local sheep-backed marbled boards. Marginally browned, but overall very good, binding a little rubbed at the extremities. First (and only?) edition, dedicated "To those Brave Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers & Men of the British Army who took part in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 and the Soudan Expedition of 1884... as a slight mark of esteem for and appreciation of their services to Egypt in general and Cairo in particular in the hope that those who hesitated not to shed their blood in the cause of law and order will now take up and study the language of the people with whom they sojourn." Mosconas, apparently a Greek, is an appealingly obscure character. He is briefly mentioned in Hill's Biographical Dictionary of the Sudan involved in the digging of wells in 1882 for Mukhtar Pasha - "a venture not attended by success" - elsewhere as a consular-agent for America in Suakin in the 80s and as the ineffectual "Professor" of the "Temple of Luxor" at the Columbian World Exposition, 1893 - "But Egyptologists are not as plentiful as people who think they want to ride on a camel." Seemingly a thorough and serious exercise, the phrase-book section is nonetheless typically open to the "interpretation" of the attitudes of colonialism, "We must take our umbrellas lest it should rain.", "Clean my Boots!", "Are you the laundress?", and with a useful section on "Blame." Decidedly uncommon, two copies only on OCLC, University of California, Berkeley, and University of Pennsylvania, none on COPAC. OCLC also lists a single copy of a slight pamphlet by Mosconas, Alexandria 1877, on the hieroglyphics of Cleopatra's Needle.

        To the Reverend Mr

[Leicester, UK?], [c.1884]. Broadsheet [4pp.] Small octavo [20.5 cm] Very good. Forty-one lines over two pages with blanks to be filled in by hand. This short work by Goddard is to introduce to the inhabitants of his native town "the fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, which God our Heavenly Father has revealed through his servant Joseph Smith." We believe this work was intended to be personalized to the recipient and have another tract laid in at the center "I respectfully ask of you the following: - That you will prayerfully and carefully peruse the enclosed tract." George Goddard (1815-1899) was an English convert and was the Assistant to the General Superintendent for the Deseret Sunday School Union for twenty-six years and is credited with first printing of the 'Articles of Faith' in card form. Not in Flake/Draper. Not in OCLC.
