The Scientific Papers; Joint Scientific Papers

London: The Physical Society of London, Taylor and Francis, 1884 Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 2 vols., 1884-1887, folding diagrams (some neat reinforcements to verso), illustrations, lacking portrait frontispiece, a couple of leaves with chips and marginal losses, later half calf.

Sparrow, Milestones of Science 113. - First Edition. Joule's papers, originally published in various learned journals and even in daily newspapers, are here collected: and they constitute a contribution to scientific progress hardly surpassed in the nineteenth century. The most important papers are those on the nature of heat: and Joule was the first to prove, what Mayer in 1842--45 assumed, the equivalence of heat produced to energy employed. Joule's Laws are the basis of the whole principle of the conservation of energy established by Helmholtz in 1847. Among the inventions thrown out in his researches are the galvanometer, the modern system of electrical units, the measurement of the velocity of a particle of gas, the modern system of electrical welding, the first displacement pump, and the absolute zero of temperature..

London: Chatto & Windus, Piccadilly, 1884. Preceeding the American Edition, the True First edition, the First English edition,“A” state, and with the earliest ads, dated October, 1884. With 174 black and white illustrations by E.W. Kemble. 8vo, publisher’s original red cloth elaborately decorated with pictorial designs in gilt and black on the covers and spine. xvi, 438, publisher’s device (p. 439), 32 pp. catalogue. A handsome and clean copy with some mellowing down to the spine panel, hinges tight, very bright and in unusually pleasing condition, the tips and edges very well preserved and very solid. FIRST EDITION, PRECEEDING THE AMERICAN ISSUE OF ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND GREATEST BOOKS IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. The first state of the book with the earliest ads, dated October, 1884. Along with TOM SAWYER, HUCKLEBERRY FINN is considered the stepping stone to modern American literature. And along with TOM SAWYER, for the first time, the hero of the novel was a boy. These books are landmarks and Hemingway often offered his opinion that the modern novel would have been impossible without them. With Whitman’s LEAVES OF GRASS and Melville’s MOBY DICK, they provide us with a view of America transcending its past and beginning its future. With Twain’s “TOM” and “HUCK” first editions in similar condition fetching well over $10,000. these days, and with the first English of “TOM” their equal, it seems only a matter of time before the English “HUCK” follows in their paths.

The Orchid Album, comprising coloured figures and descriptions of new, rare, and beautiful orchidaceous plants. Conducted by ... Warner... The botanical descriptions by Thomas Moore

London: B.S. Williams (I-VIII) and B.S. Williams & Son (IX-X), 1884. Volume 3 only (of 11), large quarto. (12 1/2 x 10 inches). Text complete and illustrated with 48 superb hand coloured lithograph plates of orchids numbered 97-144 - this volume complete and the plates extraordinarily clean.. Contemporary half blue morocco, a bit rubbed. This important record of the greatest orchid varieties discovered and described during the nineteenth century, with beautiful illustrations of the highest quality by John Nugent Fitch. This important work was published periodically by B.S. Williams from his nurseries in Holloway, London, from 1882 until his death in 1890. His son, Henry Williams, continued the publication. Its selection, based largely on the discoveries made during the nineteenth century, offers an unparalleled record of all the best orchid varieties before the impact of the captive-bred hybrids. The publisher notes, "The great advances which have been made within the last few years in the introduction and the cultivation of Exotic Orchids, have suggested the desirability of devoting a monthly publication to the illustration of the best forms of these singular and aristocratic plants, and also to the explanation of the most successful methods of growing them." In addition there are numerous notes given at the end of the specific descriptions about contemporary orchid collections, shows and growers in the United Kingdom and elsewhere. These offer a valuable glimpse into the world of the late-Victorian orchid enthusiast, and contain information, available no where else, that casts light onto the early history of the captive cultivation of a number of varieties and species. The plates by John Nugent Fitch (a member of the greatest family of British 19th-century botanical artists) benefit greatly from the large format of the work "Being of Royal Quarto size, the pages of the Album are sufficiently large to enable the artist to produce ample and intelligible portraits of the plants without their becoming cumbersome." The resultant work offers both a fascinating insight into the state of knowledge about orchids and their cultivation, and also an unrivalled visual record by one of the great botanical artists of the day. Great Flower Books (1990) p.149; Nissen BBI 2107; The Orchid Observed 23.

        Over the Cape May Course

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1884. Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card. Very good condition apart from a 3/4" loss in the right margin. 14 1/2 x 20 3/4 inches. (of mount) 20 5/8 x 26 3/4 inches. Frederic Cozzens was one of America's greatest marine artists. Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. Over the Cape May Course depicts a tense moment during the Regatta of 1873 in which the schooners Clio, Enchantress, Dreadnaught, the working schooners Sharpshooter and Reindeer, and the pilotboat Negus race neck and neck down the Cape May Course, south of the Jersey shallows. Beginning off Owl's Head, New York Harbour, continuing around the lightship in the Five Fathoms Bank off Cape May, New Jersey, and finishing at the Sandy Hook lightship, the Regatta was a spirited 300 mile race from which the Enchantress emerged victorious. Jacobsen, Frederic Cozzens. Marine Painter, New York: 1982.

Boston: Printed for Houghton, Mifflin and Company, n.d. (1884)., 1884. Folio size Vedder Illustrated Edition (41 x 5 cm). Publisher's dark brown cloth elaborately decorated and titled in gilt to upper cover and spine, top edge gilt; decorative end papers to paste downs, plain grey to flyleaf. In its original light grey pictorial dust jacket, repeating the design from the book in dark blue and white to spine and upper. 64 thick board sheets on guards of which 56 with illustrations and text; an introduction to Omar Khayyam and Notes on the Text, both taken from Fitzgerald's version of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat, fill the other pages. The bright dust jacket is frayed along extremities with a few small closed tears and nicks; a little spotting to back panel. A remarkable example.
