        RAMONA

1884. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1884. 4 pp undated ads. Original light green cloth decorated in gilt. First Edition. Helen Fiske was born and raised in Amherst Massachusetts, where she was a close friend of Emily Dickinson; in 1852 she married a Capt. Hunt, but by 1865 he and their two children were dead. Close to despair, she turned to writing. In 1873, to relieve her hay fever, she went to Colorado; there she met and married banker William Jackson, living thereafter in Colorado Springs. She soon developed a growing indignation over the mistreatment of native Americans by the whites -- writing her book A CENTURY OF DISHONOR, which she sent to every member of Congress. RAMONA, far and away her greatest work, was next.~On the southern California ranch of Senora Moreno, a haughty Spaniard who refuses to yield to the onrushing tide of American conquest, live her son Felipe and Ramona Ortegna, a half-Indian and half-Scotch girl who does not realize she has been adopted. To this ranch comes Alessandro, a full-blooded Indian, who falls in love with Ramona and has his love reciprocated until Senora Moreno, enraged at the union between her adopted daughter and an Indian, attempts to sever the romance. Alessandro returns to his native village, which he finds has been destroyed by the Americans, who have also killed his father in seizing the Indian land... [OCAL]~To this day the old Estudillo estate in San Diego is known as "Ramona's Marriage Place," and tourists are encouraged to believe that Ramona and Alessandro were actual persons.~ This copy is in pale green cloth (one of several colors offered simultaneously), and is in near-fine condition (the slightest of rubbing at the extremities); there is scarcely any cover soil, which is unusual for such light-colored cloth, and the original decorative endpapers are present and intact. This classic western tale has become rather scarce in collectible condition. Blanck 10456.

Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam the Astronomer-Poet of Persia, rendered into English by Edward Fitzgerald with an Accompaniment of Drawings by Elihu Vedder (Inscribed by Vedder)

Boston: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1884. First Illustrated Edition. Near Fine. Inscribed by Vedder on the first blank: "My dear Mr. Haggin | I send you my autograph with the greatest pleasure and remain as always most sincerely yours | Elihu Vedder." Our suspicion is that this book was sent by then up and coming American painter, Ben Ali Haggin, to Elihu Vedder for his signature in the early 1900s. & & Folio (pages 15.5 x 12.5 inches): complete with lithographic frontispiece, title-page, colophon, dedication leaf, half-title and 51 plates all mounted on linen guards (as issued by publisher), and eight more leaves at the end containing the Appendix, Notes and List of Illustrations. Near Fine with minor wear at the spine ends and some soiling to the cloth. Light marginal foxing throughout, rarely touching any of the images. This is the first edition to ever illustrate the "Rubaiyat," issued at the same time as a signed limited edition of 100 copies. Each signed copy offered for $100 and each "trade" edition, such as this one, originally offered for $25. Despite the high cost, the entire print run was sold in less than a week. & & "Vedder's Rubáiyát set the standard for the artist-designed book in America and England. Vedder created designs for the entire book -- its cover and lining paper, its compelling drawings, and its eccentric hand-drawn letters. A new photographic printing process translated the subtle gradations of the drawings to the printed page... Since the first English translation in 1859, hundreds of editions of the Rubáiyát have appeared in numerous forms and many languages. But their most famous and elaborate manifestation was arranged by Elihu Vedder in 1884." (Richard Murray - Introduction to the Smithsonian';s 2008 American Art Exhibition of the original illustrations)& & While there are records of the signed, limited copies coming up for sale at auction, we can find no records of inscribed copies in either ABPC or Americana Exchange. Near Fine.

        Etudes de dynamique chimique

Amsterdam: Frederik Müller, 1884 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. 8vo., [4] [i] ii-iv, [1] 2-214 [2] pp., text wood-engravings. Original publishers wrappers, creased and dust soiled in margins. Upper spine chipped (professionally restored). Provenance: Strychnin specialist Prof. Franz Feist, with his ex-libris on title page. ---- Partington IV, pp. 658-60; Norman 2129. RARE FIRST EDITION, THE BIRTH OF PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY. Groundbreaking publication of Dutch chemist Van 't Hoff. Van't Hoff's treatise on chemical dynamics, in the words of his colleague Arrhenius, "develop[ed] an imposing and harmonious scheme for the whole subject of chemical influences and actions" (Partington IV, p.658). It dealt with reaction velocity, the theory of equilibrium, and the theory of affinity as based on free energy. Van't Hoff classified reaction velocities into unimolecular, bimolecular and multimolecular, wrote the equation for the effect of temperature on the equilibrium constant, and formulated the principle of mobile equilibrium (at constant volume, equilibriums tend to shift in such a direction as to oppose temperature changes imposed on a system) that became the basis of the Van't Hoff-Le Châtelier principle. In 1901 Van't Hoff received the first Nobel Prize in chemistry, in part for his work in chemical dynamics (Norman 2129)..

RECOLLECTIONS OF CALIFORNIA MINING LIFE. PRIMITIVE PLACERS AND THE FIRST IMPORTANT DISCOVERY OF GOLD. THE PIONEERS OF THE PIONEERS - THEIR FORTUNE AND THEIR FATE. WRITTEN FOR THE MINING AND SCIENTIFIC PRESS

San Francisco. 1884.. 16pp., printed in double columns. Five full- page illustrations. Original pictorial wrappers. Wrappers lightly worn and lightly soiled. Two brief notes on verso of front wrapper (one in pencil, one in ink). Very clean internally. About very good overall. Henry DeGroot was a journalist with the NEW YORK TRIBUNE when he was sent to report on the gold discoveries in 1848. Rather than giving a personal account of his own experiences, however, DeGroot presents a very useful history of gold discoveries in California in 1848 and 1849. Other sections consider why John Fremont failed to discover gold earlier in the 1840s, and why many of the early pioneers failed to attain wealth. The illustrations are by the great Gold Rush artist, Charles Nahl. The front wrapper shows a miner panning for gold, and the rear wrapper illustration is of a quartz mill. Other illustrations show Sutter's Mill and other mining camps, as well as various mining methods. KURUTZ 175. WHEAT GOLD RUSH 56. STREETER SALE 2985. HOWES D220 (ref). COWAN, p.162. ROCQ 15772.       New Orleans, 1884. No Binding. Very Good. 26 5/8 x 36 ½ inches. Lithograph. Fold wear with some losses; flattened & mounted on acid-free paper; very good. A large, visually rich plan of New Orleans made for visitors to the 1884-1885 World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exhibition. Held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the exportation of cotton from the United States, the exposition was one of the most ambitious world's fairs ever held. Audubon Park in present-day New Orleans would develop on the exposition's grounds. Although plagued by various problems, the fair did boast an array of impressive structures, including its main building, which was reputed to the world's largest wooden structure at the time. This building and several others, along with a full view and plan of the exposition grounds, are illustrated here. There are also an inset plan of New Orleans as it was in 1770 and a 1719 view of the nascent city. The large plan of the city itself is extremely well detailed, providing not only up-to-date street names throughout the whole city but also the addresses of the structures on them.

        Lettre autographe signée.

Avignon, 5. XI. 1884.

        Reflections in Palestine, 1883

London, Macmillan, 1884.. Duodecimo. Pp. x, (2), 124. Plus 3 lithograph maps on 2 plates, printed in black with additional colour by hand. Sketch illustrations to text. Hardcover, original grey cloth, bit discoloured and marked, printed and decorated in red and black. Chalked forest-green endpapers (bookplate removed from front paste-down), first inner hinge mended. In a very good condition, fine interior, crisp maps. - - First edition. British army General Charles George Gordon (1833-85), popularly known as ?Chinese Gordon?, served in the Crimean War and in the 1860 expedition to China, where he took part in the capture of Beijing and later commanded the Chinese force against the Taiping Rebellion. Appointed governour of Sudan in 1877, he waged a vigorous campaign against slave traders. He resigned in 1879, and in 1883 travelled to the Holy Land where he remained for a year, devoting his time to the study of Biblical history and of the antiquities of Jerusalem. In 1884 he was called back to service and was sent to the Sudan to defeat the Mahdi. During the campaign he was cut-off and besieged at Khartoum for 10 months. A relief expedition, belatedly dispatched from England, reached the garrison two days after it had been stormed by the Mahdists, who killed Gordon. Gordon?s death stirred public indignation and contributed to the collapse of the Gladstone government in 1885. ?Reflections in Palestine? is based on Gordon?s observations during his year-long visit to the Holy Land. It was published by his friends while he was posted in Khartoum, shortly before his death. The book is divided into Topographical and Religious sections. In the first, Gordon describes in detail the topography and architecture of some of the major holy places he had visited, while the second part is dedicated to the religious contemplations these places has aroused in him. Lytton Strachey, in ?Eminent Victorians? (1918), writes this wonderful memoir of Gordon: ?During the year 1883, a solitary English gentleman was to be seen, wandering, with a thick book under his arm, in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem. To the friendly inquirer, he would explain that he was engaged in elucidating four questions: the site of the crucifixion; the line of division between the tribes of Benjamin and Judah; the identification of Gibeon; and the position of the Garden of Eden. He was also, he would add, most anxious to discover the spot where the Ark first touched ground, after the subsidence of the Flood: he believed, indeed, that he had solved that problem, as a reference to some passages in the book which he was carrying would show.?         REDWOOD AND LUMBERING IN CALIFORNIA FORESTS

San Francisco: Edgar Cherry & Co., 1884.. [2],107pp. plus twenty-four albumen print photographs, each on an individual thin card mount within a purple printed border, twenty- one with purple printed titles, the other three with no printed title. One photograph with an additional pencil note identifying one of the loggers as "Billy Russel." Quarto. Original blue cloth, title stamped in gilt on front board, neatly rebacked with original spine laid down. Neat repairs to corners and edges of binding. Very clean internally, the images very clean and crisp, and the text quite clean as well. Overall, a very good copy. In a cloth clamshell case, leather label. An important early Californian photographically illustrated work, and an "impressive verbal and pictorial description of the logging industry on the northern coast of California" (Kurutz). The photographs are amazing and must have shocked eastern audiences by showing men standing before redwood trunks thicker than the man is tall. Other photographs show logging trains, felled timbers, groves of redwoods, and logging methods utilizing the steam- powered "donkey engines." In the preface Cherry complains that the "almost constant fog that hangs over the Redwood belt makes it difficult also to obtain good views of the forests and logging camps," but that he wanted to illustrate the book with photographs rather than engravings "to set aside all doubt as to the enormous growth of the Redwood, the number of feet per acre, and the superior qualifications that will recommend it to builders and others. In as much as engravings are usually cut from sketches, drawn perhaps by enthused artists, perfect satisfaction is not given; but with photographic views, which cannot lie, argument as to truthfulness is unnecessary." The pictures in the book vary from copy to copy, and it appears that no two copies are identical in the pictures included or the order in which they are presented. The photo captions were applied manually with an ink stamp, but some of the captions in this copy are blank (as is often the case). The volume was prepared to promote the use of redwood, the superior qualities of which are emphasized. The brief history of redwood lumbering is recounted, and the processes by which the trees are felled and cut are related in great detail. There is also an article by Kellogg on the relationship of the redwoods to other cedar trees. COWAN, p.525. KURUTZ, CALIFORNIA BOOKS ILLUSTRATED WITH ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS 7; p.16. GOLDSCHMIDT & NAEF, THE TRUTHFUL LENS 135. HOWELL 50:361. FRITZ, CALIFORNIA COAST REDWOOD 1209. MILES & REESE, CREATING AMERICA 74.

        Under the Palisades

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1884. Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card. 14 x 20 1/8 inches. (of mount) 20 x 26 3/8 inches. Frederic Cozzens was one of America's greatest marine artists. Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. Under the Palisades shows three steam propelled ships, the most prominent of which is Jay Gould's steam yacht Atalanta, a 236 foot iron screw boat, in front of the Palisades on the Hudson. Internally the pages are clean and generally bright. There is an ink inscription and institutional ink stampon the title page but no other markings. The maps are unusually bright and very clean. The front free endpaper has been repaired to the front edge. Overall the condition is very good and much better internally than usually seenfor a fragile volume..

A Stern Chase and a Long One

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1884. Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card. 14 1/2 x 20 5/8 inches. (of mount) 21 1/2 x 27 3/8 inches. A Stern Chase and a Long One depicts a race that took place in June of 1876 between the Countess of Dufferin, the America, the Grant and Madeleine. The Madeleine came in first, America second (both American boats), and the Countess of Dufferin, a Canadian yacht, finished third. Jacobsen. Frederic Cozzens. Marine Painter, New York: 1982.

A decree of Star Chamber concerning printing, made July 11, 1637: reprinted by the Grolier Club from the first edition by Robert Barker, 1637.

A specimen of the first book published by the Grolier Club, universally praised for its elegant typography and execution of printing, offered complete in its rare, untouched original state in the publisher's Japan paper facsimile binding by Alfred Matthews after a Roger Payne panel design, letters and ornamentation imprinted in gold leaf, laid in the original umber chemise, sleeved in the original umber slipcase with mounted paper title label on the spine, ownership documentation from 2 prominent American bibliophiles on the endpapers, a small label in front, a bookplate at rear. Offered is example 112 on handmade Holland paper, the number stamped in blue ink under the limitation. The title for the Grolier's first book was proposed by the printer-scholar, Theodore Low de Vinne, one of the Club's 9 co-founders, its beginnings traced to a January 23, 1884 meeting at Robert Hoe's home, the club name, after Jean Grolier, chosen in early February, its purpose, "to foster the study, collecting and appreciation of books and works on paper, their art, history, production, and commerce". PRINTING: done under the supervision of chief foreman, Daniel De Vinne, $2 for subscribers, $4 after, on Holland paper with Dutch capitals for the italic, in homage to the origins of New York City, (established by the Dutch as New Amsterdam), stated printing-148 on Holland and 2 on vellum. In actuality, 2 additional vellum examples were printed and Holland paper examples 149 & 150 were destroyed; so the true limitation is 146 on Holland paper and 4 on vellum. Issued December, 1884. IMPORTANCE: The 1637 Decree by the Court of Star Chamber, directed by Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud, in part to curtail the influence of Puritans and religious non-conformists, enacted a more stringent set of regulations for the book trade. With its apparatus for censorship of free speech and suppression of religious non-conformism by Government, it is an influential text in the early history of the American Colonies and the United States, and the study of civil liberties in the law. In effect for only 4 years, it was largely reincarnated by Parliament in the Licensing Order of 1643 to which in response, Milton wrote, "Areopagitica: A speech of Mr. John Milton for the liberty of unlicensed printing to the Parliament of England", a precursor to the political thought of John Locke, the Bill of Rights, 1689, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Bill of Rights, 1789. CONDITION DETAIL: Endpapers: Front: In pencil, 2 seller notes and former price; slight offset from small owner label. Rear: excellent.         A MIDSUMMER HOLIDAY AND OTHER POEMS

London: Chatto & Windus, 1884.. Original slate-blue cloth, lettered and ruled in gilt. Endsheets a trifle foxed, otherwise a very good, bright copy. First edition. One of fifteen hundred copies printed. A fine association copy, inscribed on the half- title: "Mary A.B. Gordon from her affectionate nephew A C Swinburne." Lady Mary Gordon, nee Ashburnham (Swinburne's mother's sister), her husband, Sir Henry, and their daughter, Mary, were favorite relatives of Swinburne. At times of duress (for example after the death of his sister in 1863, and after an emotional collapse in 1874), Swinburne would seek out the Gordons and stay with them -- either at their estate at Northcourt or at their seaside home at Niton (both on the Isle of Wight). Beginning as child playmates and continuing over the years, he became quite close with his lively, accomplished cousin Mary -- so close that much has been written about the relationship (such as their mutual interest in flagellation; their shared erotic interests formed the basis for his LESBIA BRANDON). WISE 76.

Heidi's Early [Further] Experiences. A story for children and for those who love children

Original pictorial cloth in contrasting shades of green, spines and front covers blocked in black and gilt, back covers with rules blocked in blind, gilt edges. Housed in a dark green quarter morocco solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Engraved frontispiece, 6 plates. School prize inscription dated Christmas 1905 to front free endpaper of vol. I. Some light rubbing to extremities, front joint of vol. I with short split at foot, cloth generally bright; a little sporadic foxing, short closed tear to upper margin of p. 89/90, vol. I; overall a handsome set in very good condition. First edition in English. Throughout the 1870s Johanna Spyri published stories for adults and children based around her reminiscences of growing up in rural Switzerland. But huge success came in 1880 with Heidis Lehr- und Wanderjahre, the story of an Alpine orphan girl published by Perthes Gotha, and its sequel in 1881. Perthes issued the stories in England through Swann Sonnenschein circa 1884, and in America as a single volume shortly afterwards. With a succession of print editions and many film and television adaptations, it is now considered one of the cornerstones of children's literature. The first English edition is now of notable rarity, with no copy in the British Library or any other major UK libraries. The only recorded institutional copies are in Allison-Shelley Collection of German literature in translation at Penn State University and Erfurt University library (vol. I only).

n.p., ca. 1884. Initially exhibited at the Grosvenor Gallery, 1884. Image 11-1/4 x 7 inches inches, matted, framed and glazed to 20-1/4 x 15-1/4 inches overall. Pencil on paper. . Christian, The Last Romantics, pp. 79 et seq . Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898), was "The most important artist in the later phase of the Pre-Raphelite movement and a figure of enormous influence at home and abroad" (Christian). He was born in Birmingham, the son of a frame-maker; originally planning for a career in the Church, at Oxford "he and his friend William Morris came under the influence of Ruskin and the Pre-Raphelites, and decided to devote themselves to art". Burne-Jones embarked on a distinguished career. For many years he seldom exhibited, relying on the support of devoted patrons, but in 1877 he began exhibiting at London's Grosvenor Gallery; his large paintings "caused a sensation, revealing him as the 'star' of the Grosvenor, a key figure in the Aesthetic Movement, and one of the leading artists of the day...the [peak] of his later career [was] the exhibition of King Cophetua and the Beggar Maid at the Grosvenor in 1884..." During the 1890s he enjoyed an international reputation, "being especially fashionable in Symbolist circles in Paris, where King Cophetua was received with great acclaim at the Exposition Universelle of 1889". He was created a baronet by Queen Victoria in 1894

Lee's Map of the Industries of Pittsburgh and Allegheny City, No. 2. Showing the Location of the Public Buildings, Street Car Lines, Hotels, Mills, and other Manufactures

Pittsburgh: Armor Lith Co., Ltd.. 1884. Near Fine. 1884. Full period color, 26 1/4 x 40 inches, folding into paper covers. Flanking street index, some repairs. By 1884, Pittsburgh had become one of the industrial centers in America, most famously for its great iron and steel works. This map was specifically designed to show all of the manufacturing and industrial factories which lined the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. With vignettes of "City Hall" and "Municipal Hall." This is an accompaniment to "Lee's Map of the Industries of Western Pennsylvania, no. 1, 1884," which is listed in Rumsey as 3213. Rumsey describes that map as an "unusual 'industrial thematic' map" and as a "Regional Atlas/Map," while this example is in a separately issued pocket format. It is probably that both maps were issued in both formats.

Allgemeine Grundzuge der Ethnologie. Prolegomena zur Begrundung einer Naturwissenshaftlichen Psychologie auf dem Material des Volkergedankens

Berlin: Dietrich Reimer, 1884. 1st ed., 1884. 8vo. xxiv, 144 pp. Original quarter leather binding with marbled papers over boards, printed front paper label. Bastian is remembered as one of the pioneers of the concept of the 'psychic unity of mankind' -- the idea that all humans share a basic mental framework. This became the basis in other guises of 20th century structuralism, and influenced Carl Jung's idea of the collective unconscious. He also argued that the world was divided up into different 'geographical provinces' and that each of these provinces moved through the same stages of evolutionary development. According to Bastian, innovations and culture traits tended not to diffuse across areas. Rather, each province took its unique form as a result of its environment. This approach was part of a larger nineteenth century interest in the 'comparative method' as practiced by anthropologists such as Edward B. Tylor. This is one of his seminal works. Wear along the spine and edges else very good. Very scarce in the first edition.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good.

Documents epigraphiques recueillis dans le nord de l'Arabie

Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1884. 4to (290 by 230mm), 64 pages, 57 plates, mostly heliographed, 9 double-page, blue wrappers chipped at extremities, internally fine. Introduction in French, otherwise text in English. Contain in a modern slip case for protection. ''First fruits of Arabia'' (Hogarth, Life of Charles M. Doughty (1928) chapter V), and the first publication in English of any account of Doughty's travels, predating Travels in Arabia Deserta by four years. After his return to Europe, Doughty spent the summer of 1879 near Naples and began seriously to consider the publication of his geographical and epigraphic researches, in England, France or Germany. In November 1880 he wrote a long letter to the German orientalist Sprenger about El-Hejr and the area of Medain Salih, from which Sprenger made a resume, which found its way into the columns of a geographical magazine called Globus (vol. xxxvii (1880) p. 201). Doughty's own longer report, with sketch-maps, translated into German appeared in Globus, volumes xxxix -xli (1881-82) and established ''his priority in the geographical studies by which he set most store'' (Hogarth). Doughty first met the great French orientalist and writer Ernest Renan in late spring 1883, and it was in Paris, after the failure of an attempt to sell his copies of the inscriptions to Berlin (an attempt equally unsuccessful in Paris - ''les copies et estampes d'inscriptions n'ont pas de valeur venale'', as Renan put it), that the results of Doughty's copying of the inscriptions at Medain Salih saw light of day, Renan (amongst others), who wrote the preface, hurrying the publication along in six months so that before the end of August 1884, advance copies were ready. (Doughty had in January 1884 failed to interest Bernard Quaritch in publishing the work.) Sales were very slow, Doughty received 150 free copies but made no money out of the work, and the publication of the inscriptions was almost immediately superseded by the work of Huber and Euting..         The Original Sketches for King Fo, The Lord of Misrule. A Twelfth-Night Story. (Together with first edition)

(1884). Quarto. (28)ff. A one-of-a-kind album containing the original artwork for the children's book King Fo, The Lord of Misrule, written and illustrated by Robert Dudley. With thirty-five lively and bright pen, ink, and watercolor sketches that incorporate the book's rhyming text, which has been written by hand. Dudley has also added a title page for the album, a bookplate designed for King Fo, and twelve printed sheets of text, which are probably proofs. All are mounted on thick card pages. The album is accompanied by a first-edition copy of the book, published by Thomas De La Rue & Co. One can clearly see the considerable changes that were made between the time the sketches were made and the book's publication, probably for economic reasons. The number of pages was reduced, several of the illustrations were re-configured, and a few of the illustrations were dropped. In addition, some of Dudley's text was altered, probably to fit the new layout.
