The text includes a 2 1/2 page list of recommended geography books. & Lucretia Crocker (1829-1886) was an important Boston educator and school administrator who had a longstanding interest in improving geography instruction. Beginning as an inspiring teacher in geography, science and mathematics, and in 1857 becoming professor of mathematics and astronomy at Antioch College under President Horace Mann, Crocker began to gravitate toward a variety of educational projects. In 1864 she assisted her formal pupil, Mary L. Hall, with writing OUR WORLD, FIRST LESSONS IN GEOGRAPHY. Crocker then served on a committee of the American Unitarian Association to select books for Sunday School libraries, was an active member of the New England Freedmen's Aid Society, served as chairman of the executive committee of the Boston School for Deaf Mutes, and was a founding member of the Woman's Education Association of Boston. Coming under the influence of the famous zoologist Louis Agassiz, Crocker began to focus on the improvement of science teaching and on spreading knowledge of science to the general public. In 1873 she headed the science department of the newly founded Society to Encourage Studies at Home. In 1874, a legislative act made it possible, for the first time, for women to serve on the Boston School Committee, and Crocker and five other women, including Lucretia Peabody Hale and Abby W. May, were duly elected. The following year Crocker was one of six persons to serve on the prestigious and influential board of supervisors, a post she stayed in, with responsibility for the natural science, until her death. "Her longstanding interest in upgrading geography instruction was reflected in her METHODS OF TEACHING GEOGRAPHY: NOTES ON LESSONS (1883)...Lucretia Crocker virtually revolutionized science teaching in the Boston schools. In close consultation with leading scientists at Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she insisted on the best in equipment and technical reference works for school libraries. She introduced zoology and other new subjects...In recognition of her contribution, she was in 1880 elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a signal tribute to one who had never been a practicing scientist." - NAW. RLIN / OCLC locates only 1 copy of the 1883 edition and 7 copies of this 1884 edition. NAW I, pp. 407-409. Cheney, Memoirs of Lucretia Crocker and Abby W. May. Gilt tooled raised bands, gilt ruled compartments. All edges gilt. Blue silk endleaves. A fine copy.A fine reprint of the first edition in English of Charles-Dominique-Joseph Eisen's (1720–1778) richly illustrated edition of La Fontaine's Contes et nouvelles en vers (1762)."It is as a designer of illustrations and vignettes for books that [Eisen] is best known. The most remarkable of these are the designs for the Fermiers généraux edition of the Contes of La Fontaine, published at Amsterdam [i.e. Paris: Barbou]in 1762; Ovid's Metamorphoses, 1767-71; the Henriade of Voltaire, 1770; the Baisers of Dorat, 1770; and the Vies des Peintres hollandais et flamands of Descamps, published in 1751-63" (Wiki)."Eisen's...designs for La Fontaine are the liveliest and most adroit that he ever drew. Thoroughly at home with the varied action of these lusty stories - their love passages, their intrigues, their practical jokes - he is also expert in choosing the moment in each that will best serve his purpose as an illustrator...The detailed meaning of his concentrated compositions is to be grasped only after prolonged examination. The world that they depict is that of the homme moyen sensuel, where beauty exists only to satisfy desire and youth has its way over age, where cynicism is the common coin and virtue the calculated means to an end. But before the force and vitality of Eisen's scenes, normal scruples dissolve in admiration" (Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book 1700-1914, p. 54).Jean de La Fontaine (1621-1695) was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables , which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France, and in French regional language."Like his miscellaneous works, La Fontaine’s Contes et nouvelles en vers (Tales and Novels in Verse) considerably exceed the Fables in bulk. The first of them was published in 1664, the last posthumously. He borrowed them mostly from Italian sources, in particular Giovanni Boccaccio, but he preserved none of the 14th-century poet’s rich sense of reality. The essence of nearly all his Contes lies in their licentiousness, which is not presented with frank Rabelaisian verve but is transparently and flippantly disguised. Characters and situations are not meant to be taken seriously; they are meant to amuse and are too monotonous to amuse for long. The Contes are the work far less of a poet than of an ingenious stylist and versifier. The accent of La Fontaine the narrator enlivens the story with playfully capricious comments, explanations, and digressions" (Enclyclopedia Britannica).

THE BEAR-WORSHIPPERS OF YEZO AND THE ISLAND OF KARAFUTO (SAGHALIN) OR THE ADVENTURES OF THE JEWETT FAMILY AND THEIR FRIEND OTO NAMBO

Boston & New York: Lee and Shepard / Charles T. Dillingham, 1884.. Boston & New York: Lee and Shepard / Charles T. Dillingham, 1884.. xiii,[3],304,[2]pp. Large, thick octavo. Half gilt calf and marbled boards, pictorial panels of original binding bound in. Frontis and illustrations. A few incidents of marginal spotting, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. A superb association copy, inscribed by the author to American Orientalist and modernist literary influence, Ernest Fenollosa, utilizing Fenollosa's Japanese honorific: "Mast. Kano Fenollosa with the affectionate remembrances of the Author Edward Greey 20 E 17 St New York Oct. 20 1883[?]." After serving with the British military during the Second Opium War, Greey (1835-1888) traveled to Japan in the diplomatic service and immersed himself in the country's language, culture and art. In 1868, he settled in New York, opening a shop specializing in Japanese art and antiquities, and subsidizing that income as a writer. In addition to formal works such as the present, which afford a valuable insight into aspects of Japanese history and culture from a Westerner's point of view, Greey was a prolific contributor to the pulp press and boy's papers, often under pseudonyms. He took his own life in 1888 under mysterious circumstances. As a somewhat older contemporary of Fenollosa, he would no doubt had ample reason and opportunity to make his acquaintance, either in the U.S. or during travels back to Japan on business. Beyond his considerable importance as one of the preeminent Orientalists of the last quarter of the 19th century, Fenollosa left an indelible influence on Ezra Pound and W.B. Yeats, who worked mightily to edit his unpublished manuscripts and notes and disseminate his ideas.

Notiz über die Spectrallinien des Wasserstoffs. WITH: Zweite Notiz über die Spectrallinien des Wasserstoffs

Basel: H. George's Verlag. Basel: H. George's Verlag. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Good. FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of Balmer's two papers providing the formula for describing the spectral lines of hydrogen; of profound influence for Niels Bohr and the beginnings of quantum theory. "Although trained as a mathematician and working as a mathematics teacher, Balmer became interested in spectroscopy, which was very much at the cutting edge of scientific research at the time, and was encouraged by colleagues at Basle University to try to find an explanation for the way lines in a spectrum are distributed--at first sight, in a random pattern. Although many other scientists had tried and failed to find some order in these patters, in 1884, in his sixtieth year, Balmer succeeded in finding an equation that not only reproduced the relationship between the four bright lines known in the spectrum of hydrogen at the time, but also predicted the existence of a fifth line, at the edge of visibility, that was soon detected. The formula was published in 1885, the year Niels Bohr was born. "The five lines became known as the Balmer series... Although Balmer's results were entirely empirical, based on the mathematical relationships alone with no attempt to find their underlying physical cause, this discovery that there was a mathematical order in the pattern of spectral lines was an important step towards developing an understanding of the spectrum in quantum terms" (Gribbin, Q is for Quantum).

"Shortly after 7 February [1913] Bohr heard of the Balmer formula. By 6 March he had completed a paper containing its interpretation. That event marks the beginning of the quantum theory of atomic structure" (Pais, Niels Bohr's Times). IN: Verhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft in Basel, vol. 7, pp. 548-560; 750-752. Basel: H. George's Verlag, 1885. Octavo, original yellow printed wrappers, uncut and largely unopened; custom box. Stamp on front wrapper. Wrappers chipped around edges, front wrapper detached and groups of gatherings cleanly separated. SCARCE, particularly in original wrappers.

The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit

London: Chapman and Hall, 1884. London: Chapman and Hall, 1884 Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne (published under the pseudonym Phiz). First edition, first issue, with 100£ to the frontispiece. Finely bound in full polished calf by Zaehnsdorf, with five raised bands ruled in gilt to the spine, contrasting red and green Morocco labels lettered in gilt to the spine, spine compartments elaborately tooled in gilt, boards ruled in gilt, top edge gilt, gilt inner turn-ins, blue marbled endpapers. Near fine, with some light wear and minor rubbing to the extremities, faint toning to the spine, some light toning and scattered faint spotting to the plates, otherwise bright and fresh pages. A beautifully bound, handsome copy. Smith I 7. Martin Chuzzlewit was originally published serially in nineteen monthly installments 1883-1884. It was one of Dickens' favorite works, but much to his surprise, the text was not nearly as popular as his earlier novels. The plot is notable for portraying a harsh depiction of American culture and has been pegged by some to be Anti-American, although Dickens, who had just returned to Britain from the United States, considered this on par with the satirical criticisms of cultural institutions found in his other novels.. Illus. by Browne, Hablot Knight. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.
