        Over the Cape May Course

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1884. Colour-printed lithograph, mounted on card. Very good condition apart from a 3/4" loss in the right margin. 14 1/2 x 20 3/4 inches. (of mount) 20 5/8 x 26 3/4 inches. Frederic Cozzens was one of America's greatest marine artists. Like nearly every other great marine artist, he was thoroughly acquainted with every aspect of ship construction and the art of sailing. He is best known for his paintings of great American yachts of the latter half of the 19th century, which were commissioned by many of New York's leading yachtsmen. In 1884, he expanded his audience by making a series of lithographs of his paintings. The first and most brilliant series was American Yachts, Their Clubs and Races from which this print comes. Over the Cape May Course depicts a tense moment during the Regatta of 1873 in which the schooners Clio, Enchantress, Dreadnaught, the working schooners Sharpshooter and Reindeer, and the pilotboat Negus race neck and neck down the Cape May Course, south of the Jersey shallows. Beginning off Owl's Head, New York Harbour, continuing around the lightship in the Five Fathoms Bank off Cape May, New Jersey, and finishing at the Sandy Hook lightship, the Regatta was a spirited 300 mile race from which the Enchantress emerged victorious. Jacobsen, Frederic Cozzens. Marine Painter, New York: 1982.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, The Astronomer-Poet of Persia. Rendered into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald. With an accompaniment of drawings by Elihu Vedder

Boston: Printed for Houghton, Mifflin and Company, n.d. (1884)., 1884. Folio size Vedder Illustrated Edition (41 x 5 cm). Publisher's dark brown cloth elaborately decorated and titled in gilt to upper cover and spine, top edge gilt; decorative end papers to paste downs, plain grey to flyleaf. In its original light grey pictorial dust jacket, repeating the design from the book in dark blue and white to spine and upper. 64 thick board sheets on guards of which 56 with illustrations and text; an introduction to Omar Khayyam and Notes on the Text, both taken from Fitzgerald's version of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat, fill the other pages. The book is splendid: a sound and bright copy with only a slight bumping to corners and a little rubbing to spine ends. The bright dust jacket is frayed along extremities with a few small closed tears and nicks; a little spotting to back panel. A remarkable example.

        Lettre autographe signée.

Avignon, 11. IX. 1884. - 4p in-12 (70 lignes environ).

Nerto Nouvello Prouvencalo [Nerte Nouvelle Provencale] [Signed Association Copy and with 8 Autograph Letters Signed -- 9 Mistral Signatures]

Paris: Librairie Hachette et cie., 1884. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, finely bound in red morocco-backed boards with marbled paper sides, spine in compartments with gilt author name, title, and year, marbled endpapers, with the original wrappers bound in; the hinges (internal) have been professionally reinforced with cloth, SIGNED BY FREDERIC MISTRAL AND WITH 8 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED TIPPED IN; a narrative poem based on a chronicle of the Avignon Popes and given in the form of a short story. An excellent copy with the original faintly soiled wrappers bound in and with an illustrated frontispiece. First edition, first printing, of this work of poetic fiction, in parallel French-Provençale text, by poet and philologist Frederic Mistral (1830-1914). Mistral devoted his life to the recording, championing and composing of Occitan literature and language (the Langue d'Oc), and Nerto was published while Mistral was in the process of creating his Lou Tresor dóu Félibrige (1878-1886), which is still the most comprehensive dictionary of the Occitan language. Frederic Mistral won the 1904 Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of the fresh originality and true inspiration of his poetic production, which faithfully reflects the natural scenery and native spirit of his people, and, in addition, his significant work as a Provençal philologist". Mistral specifically cited "Nerto", along with a few of his other major works, in his autobiographical profile written in connection with the award of the Prize to him and, in his speech presenting the Prize to Mistral, C.D. af Wirsén, Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy, described the work as one that "offers many beautiful pages for the reader's admiration." This is a PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the half title, by Mistral to the important Parisian writer, publisher and literary editor Edouard Champion as follows: "A Monsieur Champion, l'éditeur du poète philologic, hommage cordial, F. Mistral" and contains 8 autograph letters signed by Mistral, all addressed to Edouard Champion between 1896 and 1905, and most of a literary concern. Signed copies of "Nerto" are quite uncommon, and signed Association copies, as offered here, are scarce. An Association copy of Mistral's "Nerto" SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY FREDERIC MISTRAL TO THE IMPORTANT LITERARY FIGURE EDOUARD CHAMPION TOGETHER WITH 8 AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED BY MISTRAL TO CHAMPION. A RARE COPY WITH A REMARKABLE NINE FREDERIC MISTRAL SIGNATURES.
