      . London, George Bell and Sons, 1884-1887. Three volumes in three. 8vo (25 x 17.5 cm). (I) xiv, 114 pp; (II) x, 144; (III) viii, 144, with in total 81 beautiful colour-printed wood-engraved plates. Publisher's pictorial gilt pictorial green cloth.* One of the most attractively illustrated works on parrots, by the English medical doctor and zoologist William Thomas Greene (d. 1906). "An account of the habits of 81 varieties of parrots (including cockatoos, macaws, parakeets, etc.) with special reference to their behaviour in cage or aviary" (Zimmer p. 274). The fine plates are by Benjamin Fawcett (1808-1893) from drawings by his former apprentice, Alexander Francis Lydon (1836-1917). Fawcett and Lydon are best known for their works in (colour) wood engraving, the present work being an example of their chromoxylographical skills. A copy without the usual foxing. Foot of spines slightly frayed, a few leaves loosening, otherwise very good. Nissen IVB, 393; Zimmer p. 274..

        Reflections in Palestine, 1883.

Hardcover, original grey cloth, bit discoloured and marked, printed and decorated in red and black. Chalked forest-green endpapers (bookplate removed from front paste-down), first inner hinge mended. In a very good condition, fine interior, crisp maps. ~ First edition. British army General Charles George Gordon (1833-85), popularly known as "Chinese Gordon", served in the Crimean War and in the 1860 expedition to China, where he took part in the capture of Beijing and later commanded the Chinese force against the Taiping Rebellion. Appointed governour of Sudan in 1877, he waged a vigorous campaign against slave traders. He resigned in 1879, and in 1883 travelled to the Holy Land where he remained for a year, devoting his time to the study of Biblical history and of the antiquities of Jerusalem. In 1884 he was called back to service and was sent to the Sudan to defeat the Mahdi. During the campaign he was cut-off and besieged at Khartoum for 10 months. A relief expedition, belatedly dispatched from England, reached the garrison two days after it had been stormed by the Mahdists, who killed Gordon. Gordon's death stirred public indignation and contributed to the collapse of the Gladstone government in 1885. "Reflections in Palestine" is based on Gordon's observations during his year-long visit to the Holy Land. It was published by his friends while he was posted in Khartoum, shortly before his death. The book is divided into Topographical and Religious sections. In the first, Gordon describes in detail the topography and architecture of some of the major holy places he had visited, while the second part is dedicated to the religious contemplations these places has aroused in him. Lytton Strachey, in "Eminent Victorians" (1918), writes this wonderful memoir of Gordon: "During the year 1883, a solitary English gentleman was to be seen, wandering, with a thick book under his arm, in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem. To the friendly inquirer, he would explain that he was engaged in elucidating four questions: the site of the crucifixion; the line of division between the tribes of Benjamin and Judah; the identification of Gibeon; and the position of the Garden of Eden. He was also, he would add, most anxious to discover the spot where the Ark first touched ground, after the subsidence of the Flood: he believed, indeed, that he had solved that problem, as a reference to some passages in the book which he was carrying would show." Originally issued in separate fascicles, this is a remarkable, complex, and beautiful book, printed on 44 different kinds of paper and employing complex combinations of color and printing techniques. The book was issued to demonstrate the newest techniques of printing and styles of book design. The first three sections contain essays on the history of paper, ink, and the use of color in printing. This third part is particularly dazzling as each typographical border of every page has been printed using different color combinations to demonstrate the contrasts and harmonies of combining colors. The second part -- "Applications" -- is printed on various kinds of tinted paper (mostly coming from various named French mills but including a few Dutch and English mills), all printed and decorated employing flamboyant combinations of types and ink colors. Eleven original samples of rare papers, from ancient papyrus to modern Japanese, are tipped-in at end. Rochas d'Aiglun (1837-1914), was a leading French parapsychologist, historian, translator, writer, military engineer, and administrator. He wrote important works on military engineering history, ancient technology, hydraulic organs, water clocks, ancient surveying instruments, temple machinery, Greek artillery, and ancient railways. A few leaves browned but a fine copy and rare. Faint stamp at foot of upper wrapper of A. Bulbena, Barcelona. Lower edge of each board a little bruised. With leather bookplate of Isidoro Fernández (1878-1963). .

        English & Arabic Dictionary

      Cairo, [?for the Author,] , 1884. Accompanied by Dialogues & Useful Notes for the Use of the British Army of Occupation. By.... Interpreter to the Commissariat and Transport Staff. Small octavo. (160 × 100 mm). Contemporary local sheep-backed marbled boards. Marginally browned, but overall very good, binding a little rubbed at the extremities. First (and only?) edition, dedicated "To those Brave Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers & Men of the British Army who took part in the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 and the Soudan Expedition of 1884... as a slight mark of esteem for and appreciation of their services to Egypt in general and Cairo in particular in the hope that those who hesitated not to shed their blood in the cause of law and order will now take up and study the language of the people with whom they sojourn." Mosconas, apparently a Greek, is an appealingly obscure character. He is briefly mentioned in Hill's Biographical Dictionary of the Sudan involved in the digging of wells in 1882 for Mukhtar Pasha - "a venture not attended by success" - elsewhere as a consular-agent for America in Suakin in the 80s and as the ineffectual "Professor" of the "Temple of Luxor" at the Columbian World Exposition, 1893 - "But Egyptologists are not as plentiful as people who think they want to ride on a camel." Seemingly a thorough and serious exercise, the phrase-book section is nonetheless typically open to the "interpretation" of the attitudes of colonialism, "We must take our umbrellas lest it should rain.", "Clean my Boots!", "Are you the laundress?", and with a useful section on "Blame." Decidedly uncommon, two copies only on OCLC, University of California, Berkeley, and University of Pennsylvania, none on COPAC. OCLC also lists a single copy of a slight pamphlet by Mosconas, Alexandria 1877, on the hieroglyphics of Cleopatra's Needle.

      [Leicester, UK?], [c.1884]. Broadsheet [4pp.] Small octavo [20.5 cm] Very good. Forty-one lines over two pages with blanks to be filled in by hand. George Goddard (1815-1899) was an English convert and was the Assistant to the General Superintendent for the Deseret Sunday School Union for twenty-six years and is credited with first printing of the 'Articles of Faith' in card form.         The Nordenfelt Machine Guns described in Detail and compared with other Systems;

      Portsmouth: Griffin & Co.,, 1884. also their Employment for Naval and Military Purposes. Quarto (300 × 238 mm). Near contemporary dark brown half morocco and light brown pebble-brained cloth, title gilt direct to the spine, low bands with a dotted roll, gilt, double rules to the compartments, that at the tail of the spine with the crests of the Library of the Parliament of New South Wales, as also to the upper board, marbled edges and endpapers. 53 plates. Just a little rubbed, some foxing throughout, but overall very good. First edition. Extremely uncommon promotional publication for Nordenfelt's guns; "When I commenced to write this treatise upon Machine Guns it was my intention to endeavour to give an unbiassed opinion about this subject in general; but I soon found it impossible to avoid comparisons, and I have therefore thought it better to give my own views, 'sans peur et sans reproche,' as to how perfect Machine Guns should be constructed …" (Preface). In Nordenfelt had migrated from Sweden to England in 1866 and established a company trading Swedish steel for finished rails. In 1875 he met the inventor Helge Palmkrantz who had recently patented a multi-barrel, lever-actuated, machine gun, became his backer and British agent, and persuaded Palmkrantz to name the gun the Nordenfelt Machine Gun. Subsequently Nordenfelt was pressured by Rothschild and Vickers to merge with Maxim, in 1888 becoming The Maxim Nordenfelt Guns and Ammunition Company. Personally bankrupt two years later Nordenfelt was forced out of the company, and moved to France where he set up the Société Nordenfelt, developing the eccentric screw breech used on the French 75. He was further pursued by the Maxim company in connection with a contractual non-competition clause and retired to Sweden in 1903.

        Almanach héraldique et drôlatique pour l'année 1884 [- 1885].

      Paris, Pise, E. Plon, Nourrit, 1883-1884, - 2 livraisons en un vol. grand in-8, VIII-292-XII-[2]-256 pp., avec des bandeaux et culs-de-lampe, demi-chagrin cerise, dos à nerfs orné, tranches mouchetées, premières couvertures abondamment illustrées conservées sous serpentes (reliure de l'époque). Bon exemplaire. Deux premières années (sur seulement trois) de cette étrange et rare publication, dont tous les articles sont dûs à Goffredo di Crollalanza (1855-1905), fils de l'héraldiste Giovan Battista di Crollalanza (1819-1892), et qui vécut quelques années en France comme journaliste et romancier. Les sujets ressortissent certes de l'héraldique, mais vue sous son côté piquant, amusant ou burlesque : animaux héraldiques, armoiries mythiques, le blason macabre, etc. L'année 1886 (absente ici) ne forme qu'un petit recueil de 116 pp. Absent de Saffroy.         Autograph Letter, signed, to "Ethel" [Hatch]

      "Christ Church", [Oxford], jan.30/'84 [1884]. 12mo. 4pp. in Dodgson's purple ink. Fine. In quarter purple morocco and cloth drop case with descriptive lettering in gilt on upper cover. Cohen, p. 527 . A touching letter. Ethel being almost certainly one of Dodgson's favorite 'child-friends', Ethel Hatch: "My dear Ethel, "I think it will have to be YOU that settles the 'which' as to the new book: but the 'when' is quite another matter. It is quite a High School sort of question - 'If anticipation gives happiness, what will 40 years of anticipation give?" ANS: '40 years of happiness!' My only fear is that is would be too much happiness for you. Still, I know you are a VERY good girl (at least, all the people who live in Canterbury Row, & in that neighbourhood, have never told me anything to the contrary), so I say to myself 'Yes! She DOES deserve it. She shall have 40 years of happiness!' "Give B [eatrice Hatch] my love, & thanks for her letter: & as she now does a 'different sort' of work from the High School, I send her a question to work out; the like of which was NEVER set there. 'If it is odd to have an undergraduate brother, what is it to have two?' ANSWER: 'Even.' "Please think of me in the year 1924 A.D. and believe me, "Yours always affectionately "CLD"

In the ten months from May 1883 to March 1884, Elihu Vedder (1836-1923) completed a series of 54 drawings in pencil, ink, chalk, & watercolor to accompany this 1884 edition of the Rubaiyat. All of these original drawings, which were proclaimed a masterwork of American art, were included in a special exhibition of "Elihu Vedder's Drawings for the Rubaiyat" at the National Museum of American Art in 1998. The exhibition also included two first edition printings of this Rubaiyat with Vedder's "accompaniments." Vedder's edition was an instant success, selling out only six days after its debut in Boston on November 8, 1884. With the Rubaiyat, Vedder set the standard for artist-designed books in America and England. Critics rushed to acclaim it as a masterwork. Vedder is best known for his illustrations of this edition of The Rubaiyat. He died in Rome, Italy, in 1923.
