Autograph Letter, signed, to "Ethel" [Hatch]

"Christ Church", [Oxford], jan.30/'84 [1884] - A touching letter. Ethel being almost certainly one of Dodgson's favorite 'child-friends', Ethel Hatch: "My dear Ethel, "I think it will have to be YOU that settles the 'which' as to the new book: but the 'when' is quite another matter. It is quite a High School sort of question - 'If anticipation gives happiness, what will 40 years of anticipation give?" ANS: '40 years of happiness!' My only fear is that is would be too much happiness for you. Still, I know you are a VERY good girl (at least, all the people who live in Canterbury Row, & in that neighbourhood, have never told me anything to the contrary), so I say to myself 'Yes! She DOES deserve it. She shall have 40 years of happiness!' "Give B [eatrice Hatch] my love, & thanks for her letter: & as she now does a 'different sort' of work from the High School, I send her a question to work out; the like of which was NEVER set there. 'If it is odd to have an undergraduate brother, what is it to have two?' ANSWER: 'Even.' "Please think of me in the year 1924 A.D. and believe me, "Yours always affectionately "CLD" 12mo. 4pp. in Dodgson's purple ink. Fine. In a very good condition, fine interior, crisp maps. ~ First edition. British army General Charles George Gordon (1833-85), popularly known as "Chinese Gordon", served in the Crimean War and in the 1860 expedition to China, where he took part in the capture of Beijing and later commanded the Chinese force against the Taiping Rebellion. Appointed governour of Sudan in 1877, he waged a vigorous campaign against slave traders. He resigned in 1879, and in 1883 travelled to the Holy Land where he remained for a year, devoting his time to the study of Biblical history and of the antiquities of Jerusalem. In 1884 he was called back to service and was sent to the Sudan to defeat the Mahdi. During the campaign he was cut-off and besieged at Khartoum for 10 months. A relief expedition, belatedly dispatched from England, reached the garrison two days after it had been stormed by the Mahdists, who killed Gordon. Gordon's death stirred public indignation and contributed to the collapse of the Gladstone government in 1885. "Reflections in Palestine" is based on Gordon's observations during his year-long visit to the Holy Land. It was published by his friends while he was posted in Khartoum, shortly before his death. The book is divided into Topographical and Religious sections. In the first, Gordon describes in detail the topography and architecture of some of the major holy places he had visited, while the second part is dedicated to the religious contemplations these places has aroused in him. Lytton Strachey, in "Eminent Victorians" (1918), writes this wonderful memoir of Gordon: "During the year 1883, a solitary English gentleman was to be seen, wandering, with a thick book under his arm, in the neighbourhood of Jerusalem. To the friendly inquirer, he would explain that he was engaged in elucidating four questions: the site of the crucifixion; the line of division between the tribes of Benjamin and Judah; the identification of Gibeon; and the position of the Garden of Eden. He was also, he would add, most anxious to discover the spot where the Ark first touched ground, after the subsidence of the Flood: he believed, indeed, that he had solved that problem, as a reference to some passages in the book which he was carrying would show." Charles ?Chinese? Gordon from Khartoum! Days before the Siege of Khartoum, in the midst of evacuating the city, he quotes from the Book of Chronicles, praying to the Lord, ?We have no might against this multitude we know not what to do, but our eyes are upon Thee and God?s answer, the battle is not yours but God?s?? ? Gordon was killed on the last day of the siege

Autograph Letter Signed ?C.G. Gordon,? two pages, 5.25? x 8.25?. Kartoum [sic], March 6, 1884. To ?My dear Aunt Amy.? Professionally restored with tissue. Fine condition.Chinese Gordon thanks his aunt for sending him ?the nice verses you copied out,? then ostensibly paraphrases them, from II Chronicles. His intense religious devotion comes through powerfully in this letter to his Aunt Amy penned from Khartoum. Lytton Strachey in ?Eminent Victorians? (London: Chatto & Windus, 1918) writes that at Pembroke, where [Gordon] was sent to work at the erection of fortifications, ?those religious convictions, which never afterwards left him, first gained a hold upon his mind. Under the influence of his sister Augusta and of a ?very religious captain of the name of Drew?, he began to reflect upon his sins, look up texts, and hope for salvation. Though he had never been confirmed ... he took the sacrament every Sunday.? From www.victorianweb.org, ?Gordon was first posted to the Engineers d

[Six Original Drawings]: Four sheets of Anatomical Drawings depicting the bones and muscles of the Arm and Shoulder (Skelett des gestreckten Armes; Muskeln des gestreckten Armes; Skelett des gebeugten Armes; Schulterblatt mit Schlusselbeinverbindung), and two sheets of Anatomical and Physiognomical Drawings of the Head and Face

[Germany]. (1884-1885). Four sepia and two black and white ink drawings on thick paper sheets (measuring about 14" x 11"). The four sheets of sepia drawings have manuscript titles and descriptions in German, including one sheet initialed and dated by the artist (1884). The other two sheets of ink drawings are signed and dated: "C. Philipp" (1885). All six appear to be by the same artist, and are drawn on the same thick gray paper sheets. The sheets are hand-cut, with a few small tears at the corners, very good. The four sheets of sepia drawings consists of 12 anatomical drawings: eight representing the skeleton and muscles of an extended and a flexed arm, and four representing the scapula and clavicle. All 12 have the various bones and muscles numbered and identified in manuscript. The two sheets of pen & ink drawings consists of 14 individual representations of the head and face (depicting the skull, muscles, and fully fleshed faces), and 29 representations of fully fleshed faces: these being a series of physiognomic studies based on Johann Kaspar Lavater's famous Physiognomische. The anatomical drawings of the arm and shoulder may have been intended for Christoph Roth's Plastisch-Anatomischer Atlas (issued in several editions from 1870-1892), which prints chapter titles identical to those used for the drawings. However, it appears most likely that this set of drawings was not published. A remarkable suite of highly accomplished and detailed anatomical studies. .

        The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Chatto and Windus, London 1884 - First printing, first issue with ads dated October, 1884. The UK edition preceeds the American. Pictorial red cloth printed in black and gilt, a splendid just about fine copy in a bright, unblemished binding showing no rubbing or wear. Inner hinges are firm and tight but the front inner hinge shows the faintest beginnings of cracking. The lower outer corner of the verso of the frontispiece shows a grayish portion of the frontispiece image, a printer's error of some sort (hard to describe; we could take pictures for interested parties). Otherwise, a beautiful copy. Housed in a custom clamshell slipcase [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
