Kemble; 366 Pages; 6.9"x 8.9"; Extremely Rare!!!Great for any Travel/History Fan or Collector.  Highly Collectible; Great Gift Idea!!!first American edition, third or later issue, with copyright date of 1884 on the verso of the title, photogravure frontispiece of bust by Karl Gerhardt, illustrations by E.W.Kemble, original blue cloth , gilt, rebacked preserving original backstrip, tape markings to covers, rubbed and worn, new endpapers, [cf. BAL 3415], 8vo , New York, 1885. By far the scarcest of the cloth variants. The book exhibits the following states: Title leaf is a cancel with copyright notice dated 1884 (second state, but the first state was only seen in a prospectus and set of advance sheets - no copies of the first state have been observed in the published edition); heading for chapter 6 reads "Huck Decided" instead of "Huck Decides"; the illustration captioned "Him and another man" is listed on page 88; "with the was" on p. 57; final 5 p. 155 lacking; signature mark 11 missing on p. 161; final leaf is blank; frontispiece portrait table cloth not visible, Karl Gerhardt on side, and Heliotype Printing Co. imprint; pg. 283 corrected pant fly. Commonly named among the Great American Novels, the work is among the first in major American literature to be written in the vernacular, characterized by local color regionalism. It is told in the first person by Huckleberry "Huck" Finn, a friend of Tom Sawyer and narrator of two other Twain novels (Tom Sawyer Abroad and Tom Sawyer, Detective). It is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The book is noted for its colorful description of people and places along the Mississippi River. Satirizing a Southern antebellum society that had ceased to exist about twenty years before the work was published, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is an often scathing look at entrenched attitudes, particularly racism. Background: Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 ?" April 21, 1910), known by his pen name Mark Twain, was an American author and humorist. He is noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), called "the Great American Novel", and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Twain was a friend to presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty.Twain was popular, and his wit and satire earned praise from critics and peers. Upon his death he was lauded as the "greatest American humorist of his age", and William Faulkner called Twain "the father of American literature".Condition:Condition is Fair/Good.  Some wear to edges, re-backed binding with cloth laid down, darken/faint tape marks to boards, newer end pages, end page then frontispiece bust, first few pages have a slightly tattered edge, tape residue mark to first few pages, rest of pages/hinges/text block are very good for 130 years old!!!

Statistical, descriptive, and historical account of the North-Western Provinces of India (v. 7. Pt. I. Muttra / H.C. Conybeare, F.A. Fisher and J.P. Hewett. Pt. 2. Allahabad. Pt. 3. Fatepur / J.P. Hewett)

Allahabad: North-western Provinces Government Press, 1884-01-01. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Rebound in later green cloth with black and gold spine label. Good binding and cover. Generally clean, unmarked pages. Minor spotting. Numerous color fold out maps. Muttra (now Mathura) is a historically important city in Uttar Pradesh (reputedly the birthplace of Krishna). Allahabad (or Prayaga) was the administrative capital of the British controlled North-Western Provinces. During the Sepoy rebellion Allahabad was the site of a massacre of European troops and open revolt. In 1858, Earl Canning transferred control to the British Crown with Queen Victoria's proclamation establishing the British Raj. This book was written by British agents 25 years after the rebellion. The analysis and data of these agents is a record of the administrative component of British Imperialism. The history of the Sepoy rebellion, Muslim Mughal domination, and Hindu history are also recorded from a British perspective. The various towns and cities are described in detail. An important reference of British economic and political domination of the region.

Dorogoe nasledstvo. Roman Elisy O’Genlon [A Costly Heritage. A novel by Alice O’Hanlon].

Izdanie E. N. Akhmatovoi. S.-Peterburg, Tipografiia A. A. Kraevskago 1883 [cover: Tipografiia I. N. Skorokhodova ] 1884 - First edition in Russian of A Costly Heritage (New York, 1881; London, 1882), with a translation of Ouida’s Frescoes: dramatic sketches (1883) at the end. Of O’Hanlon little is known. According to the Loebers, she ‘probably lived in Lancashire. Only one of her works [Chance? or Fate?, 1889] is known to have Irish content, but given her name it is likely she had Irish connections’ (A Guide to Irish Fiction O102). The British Library catalogues lists five other novels, 1878–86. A Costly Heritage appeared in Britain as a Tinsley Brothers three-decker, sometimes deemed the end of the line for a novel. There were no further editions. This copy suggests that the Russian version suffered a similar fate, as the cover here shows the sheets were reissued the following year by another publisher. No translations of O’Hanlon’s novels, in any language, are listed in either COPAC or WorldCat. 8vo (205 × 153 mm), pp. 312, 68; upper corner of the half-title excised and sometime repaired, corner of pp. 277/8 torn away (no loss); original printed boards, (original?) red sheep spine and corners, a little worn, sides discoloured.       London: Chatto & Windus, 1884. First edition. Very Good +. True first edition, preceding the US edition. A Very Good + copy in the original red cloth stamped in gilt and black. A short tear to the cloth at the crown, a few spots to the cloth and the front hinge professionally (almost invisibly) repaired. Previous owners' writing across much of the half-title, but not elsewhere in the book. With the correct, first issue ads, dated October 1884. "We are also presented with a chapter from an unpublished work by the writer, detailing the adventures of a Southwestern boy a quarter of a century ago, which places before us in vivid colors the rough, hilarious, swaggering, fighting, superstitious ways of the bygone raftsmen. Rude, sturdy, unflinching, and raw though the picture is, it is likely to stand a long while as a wonderful transcript from nature, and as a memorial of the phase of existence which is described that will not easily be surpassed in the future. ("The Atlantic Monthly," September 1883). Very Good +.

Three Autograph Letters, signed, one with a drawing, to Rev. E.F. Strickland

New York, 1884-91. 8vo. . Fine. v. Peters, Currier & Ives, I, p. 70 et seq . One letter dated September 15, 1884 forwards "a couple of sketches which are not exactly what I would like Mrs. Strickland to have as a specimen of my work" but hopes to send something more suitable later. On April 21, 1891 he reports that two men asked about have died, but that a third can be found at "Life" magazine; he hopes "to send portrait soon." The third letter, dated December 1, 1884, is a particular delight. At the head of the page Worth has pasted a clipping from the Chicago Times. "'How to Make $500 a Year with Twelve Hens' is the title of a book recently published. The author is probably no less a person than that distinguished chicken fancier, Rutherford B. Hayes." Below this Worth has drawn in pencil and ink a hen, in bonnet and holding a furled umbrella, who looks up at the Chicago dispatch and says, "Bless me! Did you ever?". The gist of the letter is the artist's request "to enquire if the above book is published in Chicago & what price it can be had for, and I will forward the amount & ask you to have it sent to me...My home is on Staten Island where I amuse myself in the interval of grinding out comic illustrations by rearing & watching the motherly hen and the pompous rooster..." Thomas Worth (1834- 1917), "Uncle Tommy" as he was known to all his acquaintances and friends, sold his first comic sketch to Nathaniel Currier in 1855; he was to become one of the most popular of Currier & Ives's artists. He specialized in comic and caricature work--one of his "Darktown Comics" lithographs sold 73,000 copies--but also did racing and sporting scenes, as well as other subjects. In addition, he illustrated Dickens's Old Curiosity Shop, and contributed to "Judge" and other periodicals. He was a careful craftsman, often revising his work until he had achieved the best possible effect, and was noted for his enormous personal charm

Literarisch-humoristisches Kunstalbum. (Literaturnyy i yumoristicheskiy khudozhestvennyy albom). Plakat. Einblattdruck.

- Text in Kyrillisch. - Sehr selten! Von uns nirgends nachweisbar! Überhaupt findet sich zum Thema russische Studenten, Sozialisten und Anarchisten im 19. Jahrhundert in München nahezu nichts in öffentlichen Bibliotheken oder im Internet!

Chop front free endpaper, occasional light foxing edges and endpapers, some very minor loss paper at head and tail of spine, neat repair at foot. An historical sketch from early times through to the 1880s of the region of Tungking in Annam. At that time the region wsa involved in tumulteous events as the French attempted to gain the region facing Vietnamese and Chinese Black Flag resistance. Much of the historical information for this work the author drew from the Chinese work "Yueh-nan-chi-lio" while "The account of the Black Flags is based upon knowledge acquired from two of my military pupils who were sent upon an Imperial Mission to the Head Quarters of the band at Lao Kai. As they were not only natives of Kwang-Si, but had been formerly trusted chiefs of the Tai-pings they were for a month the welcome and honoured guests of the daring Black Flag leader Liu Yung-fu" (Introduction). .

Eine neue Methode zum Studium des Faserverlaufs im Centralnervensystem." Separat-Abzug aus Archiv für Anatomie und Physiologie. Anatomische Abtheilung. INSCRIBED BY SIGMUND FREUD.

[Leipzig: Veit, 1884]. - Pp. [453]-60. Original wrappers. Ink stamp "HISTOLOGIE/ Collège de France" on front wrapper. Ink note "Technique/ I x y z" (?by Ranvier) on front wrapper. Very Good. First Edition. INSCRIBED BY SIGMUND FREUD: "Hommage de l'auteur." The recipient was probably Louis Ranvier, who was the histologist at the Collège de France. The offprint of another paper on neurohistology by Freud--with the same ink stamp "HISTOLOGIE/ Collège de France" and with an inscription from Freud to Ranvier ("Monsieur le Professeur Ranvier hommage respectueux de l’auteur")--supports the view that Ranvier was the recipient of the offprint offered here. When Freud was in Paris from October 13, 1885-February 28, 1886, he met Ranvier at the Collège de France. Later he saw Ranvier at a dinner party given by Charcot. Freud described that meeting in a letter: "A particularly pleasant event for me was the arrival during the evening of M. Ranvier, the famous histologist, who had given me such a friendly reception in the Collège de France. I think he spoke to Charcot about me, and I myself had a pleasant talk with him later. My confidence as a judge of human nature received a considerable boost when he confided in me that he would have liked best to be a professor in a small German university--for instance, Bonn--for in a letter to Paneth I had described him as a 'German university professor badly translated into French' " (Letters of Sigmund Freud, ed. E. Freud, p. 207). Ranvier was one of only two people (the other being Charcot) who invited Freud to a dinner party while Freud was in Paris (Jones, Life and Work of Sigmund Freud, Vol. 1, p. 188). Grinstein, Sigmund Freud's Writings 30 (1884d). "Freud's full account of his method of staining nerve tissue with gold chloride. . . . An English version of this paper was published in Brain 7 (1884) pp. 86-89, under the title 'A new histological method for the study of nerve-tracts in the brain and spinal cord' " (Norman F6). "In February [Freud] heard that Weigert had invented a new method for staining nervous tissue, so he hastened to send a 'Preliminary Communication' on his own method to the Centralblatt für die medizinischen Wissenschaften, reserving the full account for Pflüger's Archiv für Anatomie und Physiologie [the full account is offered here]. He also got his friend Fleischl to send a paper to Ferrier in London for publication in Brain. . . . He wrote this one in English, but got an American to correct it. Freud was aware of the special difficulty with all such methods, which he pointed out as follows: 'Innumerable methods have been devised by histologists which proved themselves useful only in the hands of their inventors; that is why I have decided to publish even the pettiest directions.' Freud was himself highly pleased with the success of his method. which gave him 'a wonderfully clear and precise picture' of the cells and fibers. It caused some sensation at the time, and demands at once came in for it to be published in Czech, Italian, and Russian. The results of subsequent trials, however, were more variable; in some hands it produced excellent results, in others more uncertain and therefore unreliable ones.         An Archive of Over 100 significant Letters and Documents in the Period 1907-1919 of One of the Earliest Telephone Companies In Ohio

The collection contains 125 pieces of original correspondence including both TLS (Typed Letters Signed) and ((LS) Letters Signed. What began as a small electrical shop for the repair and manufacture of telephone equipment in 1884 as the north Electric Works grew to become the North Electric Company in 1889. By the early 20th Century the company became one of the most prominent manufacturing business in Ohio employing over 300 workers. After being in business for over a century, the business first was taken over by Ericsson and the by IYTY. These letters pertain to the problems stemming from a patent for the automatic ringing mechanism, switch boards and operators as well as dealing with their manufacture under Canadian Parents which became know as the Telechronometer Co. The big change ended the flat-rate system and introduced meters which could measure the length of calls and, of course, increase the cost to the consumer. For the next sixty years, the telephone company became a monopoly enforced by patent, licenses, bonds, under the Bell and AT&T trademarks.. Quarto.
