Psychiatrie. Klinik der Erkrankungen des Vorderhirns begründet auf dessen Bau, Leistung u. Ernährung. Erste Hälfte (all publ.)

. Wien, Wilhelm Braumüller, 1884, 8°, X, 288 pp., 64 Holzschnitte, 1 farb. lith. Tafel, Halbleinenband der Zeit.. First Edition. Theodor Meynert (1833-1892), professor of neurology and psychiatry in Vienna, was considered the greatest brain anatomist in Europe. - "In the history of Neurology and psychiatry Th. Meynert stands out as an phrophet of things to come. He inspired the work of Flechsig, Wernicke, and Forel, and he left his mark on Freud's thought. Thanks to Meynert the Vienna School came to rival the Salpetriere and Queen Square: to him we owe some of the current dynamic concepts in neurology and psychiatry." Haymaker-Schiller - He belonged to the German somatist school of psychiatry, which folled Griesinger's dictum that all psychic diseases were brain diseases. He is considered by some the Father of the architectonics of the brain. His work on psychiatry (a term he later rejected) consists of a brillant study of the anatzomy, functions and diseases of the forebrain. - "Wir verdanken Meynert mehr Entdeckungen in der feineren Anatomie des Gehirns als irgend einem anderen Forscher" Dölken - Garrison & Morton No.4942; Norman No.1506; Haymaker-Schiller, pp.57ff.; Bibl. Walleriana 6543

Recherches sur la conductabilite galvanique des electrolytes

Norstedt, Stockholm 1884 - FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS, of Arrhenius's landmark discovery of the theory of electrolytic disassociation. Arrhenius was awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry "in recognition of the extraordinary services he has rendered to the advancement of chemistry by his electrolytic theory of dissociation." By 1880, "it was known that solutions of certain compounds conduct electricity and that chemical reactions could occur when a current was passed. It was thought that the current decomposed the substance. In 1883 Arrhenius proposed a theory that substances were partly converted into an active form when dissolved. The active part was responsible for conductivity. In the case of acids and bases, he correlated the strength with the degree of decomposition on solution. This work was published as Reserches sur la conductibilite galvanique des electrolytes (1884; Researches on the Electrical Conductivity of Electrolytes) and submitted as his doctoral dissertation. Arrhenius sent his work to several leading physical chemists, including Jacobus van't Hoff. Friedrich Ostwald, and Rudolf Clausius, who were immediately impressed" (Biographical Encyclopedia of Scientists). Arrhenius soon gained high international acclaim, ultimately being awarded the 1903 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his work. Recherches sur la conductabilite galvanique des electrolytes. Two volumes.         PORTRAIT OF GEOFFREY SCOTT

[Np. undated].. Original portrait drawing, in sanguine and white, on a sheet of grey michalet paper, 38 x 29 cm. Fine, mounted via a vinyl sleeve in a captioned mat of ca. 1960s vintage, the latter a bit darkened and smudged. A striking portrait of Scott (1884-1929), almost full face, unsigned, but captioned "G.Scott" in the lower margin in pencil in the artist's hand. In the course of his dramatically short life, Scott left a significant mark in the fields of arts and letters. As an undergraduate, he was invited to Florence by Bernard Berenson, an occasion that led to his close friendship with John Maynard Keynes, and eventually to his acting as Berenson's secretary-librarian from 1907-1909. He established an informal architectural partnership with Cecil Pinsent, and in 1914, published the quite influential work, THE ARCHITECTURE OF HUMANISM. In spite of the somewhat complex sexual aspects it entailed, he entertained a passionate love affair with Vita Sackville-West from 1923-5, the period leading up to his publication of THE PORTRAIT OF ZÉLIDE. This latter work drew him to the attention of Col. Ralph Isham, who invited him to prepare for publication the Boswell papers Isham had coaxed from Malahide Castle. Scott was engaged in this project until, after a short holiday back home in the UK, he contracted pneumonia and died in New York in 1929. The editorship was then assumed by Frederick Pottle. Scott's POEMS were published posthumously in 1931. While the occasion upon which this portrait was made is not readily ascertainable, certainly the Rothenstein and Scott paths must have frequently intersected.

        Picea Bracteata, Loudon

Published in Edinburgh and London in 1863-1884 - A very detailed hand colored lithograph by Edward James Ravenscroft (1816-1890)from his monumental book "The Pinetum Britannicum: A Descriptive Account of Hardy Coniferous Trees Cultivated in Great Britain." which was printed in Edinburgh and London in 1863-1884. Overall this print measures 22" x 15.25". The development of botanical illustration in many ways echoes that of other art forms in that it is influenced by politics, philosophy and, of course, science. Perhaps at no time was this more pressingly visible than during nineteenth-century Britain where the aspirations of an expanding Empire resulted in a national pride that fostered scientific discovery as well as art. At the heart of this movement were the newly crowned Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. As Consort rather than King, Albert’s role was somewhat ambivalent and although he acted as a valuable advisor to his wife, it was the Queen alone who bore responsibility the operations of government. He, thus, was obliged to find his own interests and became a valued patron of the arts and sciences. His involvement in the coordination of the Great Exhibition of 1851 in large part helped to ensure its success. Therefore, it is with little surprise that Edward James Ravenscroft dedicated his large three folio work on pine trees, Pinetum Brittanicum, to the memory of the much adored Prince Consort, Albert. In December 1861 the Queen’s husband died leaving her emotionally devastated and plunging the Empire into mourning. Ravenscroft could not have thought of a more appropriate dedication, as it was the German-born Albert who had introduced the Christmas tree tradition to Britain. Ravenscroft’s publication is widely considered to be one of the greatest works on pines and is lavishly illustrated with colorful and refined depictions of many varieties of pine trees from both sides of the Atlantic. For example, The "Wellingtonia" – of "Washingtonia," as Americans proposed to call it – now Sequoiadendron giganteum, was a recent arrival in Britain, having been discovered in California about 1850. Bark and cross sections with a diameter of 96 feet had been displayed in New York and at the Crystal Palace in London. Many of the illustrations in the Pinetum Brittanicum portray the trees in parks or other natural settings with human figures included in the compositions, belying Ravenscroft’s ostensibly scientific goal in producing the work. Despite the great artistry and aesthetic appeal of the images, however, the publication is a testament to the great nineteenth-century fascination with natural history, as well as the impulse to classify and catalogue--two interests that went hand in hand and intensified dramatically over the course of the 1800s. In 1754, the great Swedish naturalist, Linnaeus, asserted in his dissertation entitled Flora Angelica, that whereas at the beginning of the previous century the English seemed little suited, indeed alien, to the study of botany, they had produced by the end of that century as many botanists as the whole of the rest of Europe. Ravenscroft was one of the great talents to emerge in this period in the field of natural history illustration, combining aspects of beauty and sc--normally considered antithetical--with apparently effortless grace. John Lindley contributed botanical descriptions for the first three parts, and Andrew Murray and Maxwell T. Masters wrote the remainder. The work was ostensibly based upon Charles Lawson’s much smaller monograph describing the range of conifers growing in Great Britain, which Edward Ravenscroft was able to bring to completion. Amongst the subscribers to the book were the French Emperor Napoleon III, who requested 30 copies and Queen Victoria. Great institutions such as the British Museum and Oxford and Cambridge Universities also subscribed to the text. Fair condition with some foxing/staining throughout. Overall browning of paper. Repair to top margin.

Thompson, formerly Captain Thomas, began his career preparing maps and atlases of Illinois and Iowa counties. At various times of his life he was in partnership with several different men, two of them, Louis Everts and Alfred Andreas, were old acquaintances from his army days. In 1870 Thompson and Everts began publishing atlases, releasing in that year what they called “combination atlas maps.” In the 1870 atlases, lithographic illustrations were placed at the rear of the volumes. After 1870 the illustrations were interleaved with township maps throughout the atlases. The atlases were sold by subscription by traveling salesmen. Thompson and Everts dissolved their partnership in the early 70s and in 1875 Thompson migrated to California. There he published atlases of Sonoma County (1877), Fresno County (1891), and Tulare County (1892). In partnership with West, he issued atlases of Santa Clara County (1875), Alameda County (1878) and Solano County (1878). All are illustrated with lithographic views and sketches similar to those in the atlases of mid-western counties. In 1884 Thompson and West published The History of the Idaho Territory. This atlas was first full-scale history of Idaho, with a splendid array of lithographed plates showing the farms, mines, houses, and other features of Idaho settlements, including bird's-eye views of several of the towns. Much space is devoted to the mining industries and other economic enterprises, but there is also treatment of early exploration, Indian Wars and other aspects of Idaho history and settlement.

        Mémoires sur les Lépidoptères.

Rédigés par N.M. Romanoff. Tomes I-VII & IX. St. Pétersbourg 1884-1897. 8 volumes. 4to (270 x 195mm). pp. (8), 181; (6), 262; (6), 419; xvii, 575, (2); (6) 248; (4), 700; (8), lvi, 658, (2); (4), 365, (1), with 130 plates of which 126 finely hand-coloured, some figures in the text and 4 coloured maps, of which 1 is a large folding map. Contemporary black half morocco, spines with red gilt lettered label (some skilful repairs to bindings). A fully coloured copy of probably the rarest work on Russian Lepidoptera. The 4 plain plates are anatomical plates and were never coloured. Sets with all the plates coloured are excessively rare and the last copy we sold with all the plates coloured was in 1961. The work was published in a very limited edition, and the number of plates which are coloured vary in most of the copies. Usually copies with 70 coloured plates or less are found. Only a few copies with all the plates coloured exist. As always, the original edition of the 8th volume is not included; it is excessively rare since this volume was destroyed by fire shortly after publication and only 10 copies survived. In the introduction of the reprint of the 8th volume Professor G.S. Medvedev, President of the Russian Entomological Society writes as follows: "Only 10 copies survived, four still kept in Russia, three in Germany, and three in other entomological libraries of the world". We have added the reprint of the 8th volume to our set but have not added the pages and the coloured plates in our description./The monographs included are fundamental contributions on the butterflies of regions of the Russian Empire and Asia, by specialists as the Grand Duke Nicolai Michailovich Romanoff himself, Christoph, Staudinger, Snellen, Grum-Grshimailo, Heylarts and others. /Amongst others the work comprises large monographs as: N.M. Potanine; E.L. Ragonol, Monographie des Phycitinae et des Galleriinae./Grand Duke Nicholas Mikhailovich Romanoff was born on 26 April 1859 at Tsarskoye Selo, the eldest child of the seven children of Grand Duke Michael Nicolaievich of Russia and his wife Grand Duchess Olga Feodorovna. He was the only naturalist of the Czar family. He was later imprisoned by the Bolsheviks in Petrograd and shot outside the St Peter and St Paul Fortress on 28 january 1919. First volume with paper repair to the upper and outer margin of the title and one text leaf with tiny repair to the outer margin, the large map with small tear. Volume VII is somewhat smaller than the other volumes and the binding was bound to match the other volumes in size.//Provenance: name of Kikumaro Okano on inside frontcover and his Japanese stamp on titles.//Junk, Bibl. Lepidopterologica 2268; Nissen ZBI, 4678.

New Sectional Map of the State of Florida

G.W. & C.B. Colton & Co., New York 1884 - Pocket map of typical format in embossed cloth covers, as issues. Map of a portion of Florida, from the state line with Georgia in the north to Lake Okeechobee in the south, and from the Atlantic Coast in the east to Madison and Taylor Counties in the west, omitting the Florida Panhandle.Counties are outlined in green, yellow and pink.Other geographical entities include towns, lakes, rivers, bays, and coastal islands. The map is at a scale of 10 miles to an inch.A grid is laid over most of the map, according to the plan adopted in surveying the Public Lands of the United States, in which the country is divided into townships by lines 6 miles apart, which are further subdivided into a smaller grid of 640-acre sections.Text on the map explains how the grids can be used to locate any piece of land on the map. Between 1831 and 1890, the Colton family was among the most prominent and prolific American map publishers. The company was founded by Joseph H. Colton, who had no formal training in geography or cartography; his principal role was to manage the production and distribution of the maps. He began by publishing maps drawn by David H. Burr in the 1830s. The firm was renamed G.W. & C.B. Colton in the 1860s when Colton was succeeded by his sons -- George Woolworth Colton (1827-1901) and Charles B. Colton (c. 1831-1916).George Colton compiled the company's 1855 Atlas of the World and served thereafter as the firm's principal map compiler, cartographer and engraver. The company continued to publish a wide range of atlases, pocket maps, wall maps, folding maps for books, etc. until the 1890s, at which point mass production began to overtake the map business.According to map historian Walter W. Ristow, "[h]aving built their business on engraving and lithography, the Coltons were apparently unwilling to reorganize it." Cartouche: "Colton¿s New Sectional Map of the Eastern Portion of Florida. From the surveys of the U.S. Land Office, the U.S. Coast Survey and other Original Sources.G.W. & C.B.
