        La Poupée . exemplaire unique.

Imprimerie de "l'Illustration",, Paris 1883 - First edition: A children's story written for the author's daughter and her doll: 'Exemplaire unique', but actually one of two recorded copies (the other in the Bibliothèque nationale). Pailleron was a prolific and successful literary figure in Paris, as co-director of the Revue des Deux mondes and author of many plays. The Bibliothèque nationale copy contains an inscription permitting the recipient (presumably the printer or editor) to print one more copy only (presumably this one). Several later editions followed, but we can find no more examples of the first. Young Marie-Louise Pailleron appears (with her brother) as the co-subject in John Singer Sargent's first dual portrait, painted in 1880 (she later recorded that she made no less than 83 sittings for it). Large quarto (320 × 242 mm), pp. 11, [3], engraved title vignette and illustrations. Paper slightly cockled throughout, title lightly duststained. Slightly later limp calf, gilt. Rubbed. [Not in Carteret.] [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

1883. Hi, Today I am listing a set of Wisdens , all rebound with covers from a well travelled collector. J Kingsley Havers OBE QC son of Sir William Havers. The books have been to many places , mainly Botswana but also Kenya Belize and Gibraltar which are all listed on the bookplate. In detail, in this lot we have two early Wisdens: 1883 and 1884 Original Wisden Rebinds, both books with covers within, bound in blue baords that are a bit worn and marked. 1883 - Very nice front cover, rear cover has some tape on it, internally very good , touch of spotting to the page block. 1884 - Has decent covers, some foxing around the title page.         Verklaringe van verscheyden kunst-rijcke wercken en hare beweginghe, door orlogie-werck ghedreven,... Alles te sien in 't Oude Doolhof tot Amsterdam, op de hoeck van de Loyers-gracht.Amsterdam, Tymen Houthaeck, 1648. Small 4to. With engraved title-page with vignette showing a labyrinth, 1 folding engraved plate, 1 full-page engraved plate by P. Holsteyn after A. Vinckenbrinck and 3 engravings in text. Modern marbled wrappers.

Franken 1375 (note); Meijer, "Het oude doolhof te Amsterdam", in: Oud Holland vol. 1 (1883), pp. 119-135; Spies, De Amsterdamse doolhoven, pp. 70-71. Extremely rare booklet (only one other copy could be traced), the first edition with a description by Jan Vos of a garden, or amusement park, called 'Oude Doolhof' (Old Labyrinth or maze), published as a souvenir or 'flyer'. This first Doolhof, called the 'Oude Doolhof', was founded at the Looiersgracht at Amsterdam by the wine merchant and inn-keeper Vincent Jacobsz. Coster before 1625. In fact it was a kind of combination of a seventeenth-century 'Madame Tussauds' and an amusement park. The garden was composed of a labyrinth in which fountains and automata were displayed, showing historical & biblical figures and spectacles. The illustrations, according to Franken implicitly after C. van de Passe (who lived also at the Looiersgracht at the time), show the sights and spectacles of this labyrinth. The lower corner of the title-page and the first plate gone. Very good copy of this rare souvenir.

        4 eigenh. Briefe mit U.

München und Kassel, 1877-1883. - Zusammen 11 SS. auf Doppelblättern. 8vo. Vgl. auch Kosch I, 725. - Der aus Arad stammende Balduin Groller (d. i. Adalbert Goldscheider, 1848-1916) leitete von 1886-92 die ‘Neue Illustrierte Zeitung’ und seit 1895 das ‘Neue Wiener Journal’ und war "perhaps the most capable and inventive of the Austrian detective-story writers: his Detektiv Dagobert is perhaps Austria's nearest approach to Sherlock Holmes" (Willard Huntington Wright, The Great Detective Stories. In: The art of the mystery story. Edited by Howard Haycraft. New York, Simon and Schuster, 1946). Als Feuilletonist und humoristischer Erzähler ebenso bekannt wie vielgelesen, veröffentlichte er über dreißig Novellen und Romane, war Vizepräsident des Journalisten- und Schriftstellerverbandes "Concordia" und Mitglied der Kunstkommission des österreichischen Kultusministeriums.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1883 - 1883 Original Paperback Wisden No Restoration

1883. Hi, I recently purchased a set of Wisdens and the first 50 of the run were in a suitcase that had not been opened for over 50 years. This lot is an 1883 Original Paperback Wisden. It has the Original Spine Paper without any Restoration. It is in Very Good Condition for the year. The spine paper is excellent, just some wear to the ends and a small amount of darkness to the bottom. The book is very tightly bound, the covers have some marks and age toning , mainly to the front cover in the middle. Internally it is very nice and clean and hasn't been opened for a while. Spotting to page block but not much at all inside the book. No restoration.

        LITTLE ANN

London: Routledge, no date [1883] - Very good (pale foxing throughout; rubbing to points and lower edges) in a Good dust-wrapper, with a long, closed tear to the back panel and loss to the spine (about two-fifths) and lower edge. The wrapper (tissue-thin buff paper printed to the front as per the book's upper board) is remarkably clean and may owe this and, in fact, its very survival, to the presence of a second, thicker, plain buff jacket (chipped) which appears to be of a similar vintage and which we suspect was added by the original purchaser of the book. Whatever the story, the only other example of the jacket we could locate was that on a dedication copy that sold for $8,125 ten years ago at Christie's, New York.         Verklaringe van verscheyden kunst-rijcke wercken en hare beweginghe, door orlogie-werck ghedreven, Alles te sien in 't Oude Doolhof tot Amsterdam, op de hoeck van de Loyers-gracht.Amsterdam, Tymen Houthaeck, 1648. Small 4to. With engraved title-page with vignette showing a labyrinth, 1 folding engraved plate, 1 full-page engraved plate by P. Holsteyn after A. Vinckenbrinck and 3 engravings in text. Modern marbled wrappers.

      - Franken 1375 (note); Meijer, "Het oude doolhof te Amsterdam", in: Oud Holland vol. [Attributes: First Edition]

Safford's Directory of Wholesale Dealers : Manufacturers and Jobbers of Jewelry, Watches, Clocks, Diamonds and Precious Stones, Silver and Silver-Plated Ware, etc. in the United States

New York: D. L. Safford July 1883. First Edition. [2], 166 pages plus extra bound in sheets for notes. 4 x 6 1/2 inches. Publisher's stiff cloth wrappers, gilt. Black and white as well as one four page chromolithographed advertisement in the middle. Minor wear to the extremities, an excellent example. Stiff wraps. The directory covers the entire United States, with New York well represented but entries from as far away as San Francisco. We find full page advertisements in b&w for many firms, and a wonderful four page chromolithographed advertisement for Keller & Untermeyer, manufacturers of watch cases with raised Gold Ornaments. The frontispiece is an image of the front of the Safford building, "The Jewelers' Mercantile Agency", noting it was established in 1873."The Jewelers' Circular, Volume 82, Issue 2, 1921" in reviewing a Safford employee's history, notes that the Jewelers' Mercantile Agency President was De Lloyd Safford and that the Agency was later taken over by the New York Jewelers' Board of Trade. Very rare - we cannot find any examples of this directory (or any other Safford Directory) at auction, online, or in OCLC.A scarce and interesting survival given the unusual topic area. While not strictly a trade catalogue, we checked and found no entry in Romaine. Near Fine.

        Towards Democracy.

Manchester John Heywood 1883 - 8vo, pp [4], 119, [1], original sage green cloth decorated in blind and lettered in gilt, lower board sliightly creased in centre, else a fine copy, FIRST EDITION, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, 'Wilfred Hargrave from his friend Edward C. April 1883.' Also personalised with the initialls 'W.H.' on the imprint leaf verso in the same hand. The first part of four that would eventually form Carpener's most enduring and popular philosophical testament, sometimes described as a prose poem. For the following twenty years Carpenter coninued expanding it, its socialism as well as radical revaluation of Victorian moral values appealing to a whole generation of English intellectuals. It is likely that the recipient of this copy, Wilfred Hargrave, was one of Carpenter's circle of Sheffield friends from before he moved out to foudn the Millthorpe community; other presentations to him have come on the market, and a photograph of him can be found in the Sheffield archive. Acording to Carpenter's biographer Tsuzki only 500 copies of the first edition were printed of which 100 remained unsold after 2 years. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Crimean Campaigning and Russian Imprisonment, by One of the Six Hundred

Edinburgh: Printed by Thomas Allan, 1883. First Edition. 8vo, 107 pp, in original maroon linen wrappers. Lettering on wrappers rubbed, moderate general handling wear, some pages with creasing or minor smudges; good to very good overall. Signed by Farquharson (who is otherwise uncredited in this edition) at the bottom of the Preface. Cross (Land of the Romanovs H33), offers this useful summary: "A private in the 4th Light Dragoons, Farquharson (b. 1831), arrived in the Crimea on 18 September 1854, took part in the Battle of the Alma on 20 September, and, memorably, was in the second line of the charge of the Light Brigade under Paget's command when he was captured by the Cossacks. He was initially maltreated but subsequently received much better treatment from Russian officers. He describes his march into captivity...his experiences being billeted on local families, his relations with fellow prisoners, and the beating he received on reaching prison. In August 1855 he was sent to Odessa and returned eventually to Balaclava on 27 October 1855." Most of Farquharson's account was first published in the Glasgow Evening Times in 1882; this is the first appearance in book form.
