Fire Fountains The Kingdom of Hawaii its Volcanoes , and the History of its Missions

Edinburgh: William Blackwood and Sons, 1883. Two volumes, octavo, each volume with four black & white plates and a map at the rear. Handsome set in full polished calf, ornate gilt spine with title labels, marbled endpapers and edges. Attractive set of this well-illustrated work on the volcanoes of Hawaii. Constance Gordon Cumming (1837-1924) was a popular Victorian travel writer and artist, the twelfth child and youngest daughter of Sir William Gordon Gordon-Cumming of Altyre; her brother was Roualeyn Gordon-Cumming, the lion hunter of African fame. In 1867 she was invited to spend a year with a married sister in India and this proved to be the start of twelve years of travel and a longer period of travel writing. A good note in Forbes describes her visit to Hawaii in October and November 1879, where her arrival was reported in the Hawaiian Gazette ('Distinguished stranger Miss Gordon Cumming is now here for the purposes of making observations and sketches etc… She is an accomplished artist, and will make sketches of the scenery of these Islands to enrich a forthcoming book of her travels'). Not long after arriving in Hilo in October she visited Kilaueau volcano where she spent several days sketching the geologic wonders that provided the title of her narrative. In the first volume she goes into some detail on the thriving sugar industry, Chinese rice growers and the wonders of a new telephone system just established at Haiku. Seven pages of chapter five describe in some detail the locals surfing on their "planks" of wood following a storm that had produced tremendous surf all along the bay. Constance describes "A good surf-board is about an inch and a half in thickness, about eighteen inches wide, and eight feet long, and should be slightly hollowed down the centre, and rounded at one end. It is stained black, frequently rubbed with cocoa-nut oil, and preserved with the greatest care, being wrapped up in cloth and hung up in some safe corner of the house." The second volume commences with the author's departure from Maui for Honolulu, and she ultimately sailed for San Francisco on board the Australia on November 24. Constance Gordon Cumming is best remembered today for the distances she travelled and the locations she reached. These included Australia, New Zealand, America, China, Japan as well as Hawaii. In later years she settled in Scotland, where she worked on her travel books and articles and arranged for exhibitions of the many watercolours she had produced in her travels.

        Felis Pardina [Eurasian Lynx]

Daniel Giraud Elliot for the subscribers, [London 1883 - A very fine image from 'the best animal painter who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). `The Lynx is one of the major predators of the colder regions of Europe and Asia, feeding on deer, hares and rabbits. They inhabit coniferous forests from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe across Siberia to Northern China, and are also found in Tibet and the mountains of Central Asia. There are more isolated populations in the Iberian Peninsula, Greece, The Balkans, Turkey, northern Iran and the Caucasus; there have also been attempted reintroductions to the Alps in Central Europe. General colouration is light or reddish brown, often with a frosting of white hairs particularly in the winter coat. The coat may be spotted although this is variable; animals from the southern parts of the range are particularly heavily marked, often more brightly coloured, and smaller. Length up to 50" overall; weight from 10 to 55lb. The Spanish Lynx Felis (Lynx) lynx pardina is sometimes classified as a separate species. It is a heavily spotted form which once occurred throughout the Iberian Peninsula, now rare and restricted to a few scattered mountainous areas and the scrubland and thickets of the Guadalquivir Delta' ( The Natural History Museum Library Big Cats A selection of magnificent illustrations by Joseph Wolf London: 1991, pp.40-42). One of the most striking images from Elliot's magnificent work A Monograph of the Felidae or Family of Cats (London: 1878-1883) which described and pictured all the species of cats then known, and is still the most beautiful work on the subject. The work was prompted by a perceived need to resolve the confusion that had built up around the naming of the various species of Felidae , particularly amongst the smaller cats. Wolf worked from specimens provided by Elliot, who visited all the great museums and zoological societies on both sides of the Atlantic. This allowed Elliot to make a comparative study of skeletons and skins and reduce the number of apparently separate species by nearly a third. Joseph Wolf served an apprenticeship with a Koblentz firm of lithographers, and spent some time working in Leiden and Darmstadt, before moving to London in 1848. The quality of his images was recognized immediately and he was rarely without work, producing natural history pictures of the highest quality for the Zoological Society of London, Henry Dresser, George Gray and John Gould, amongst many others. Wolf's work for Elliot marks the high-point of his illustrative work and his images of the cats are considered by many to be his masterpieces. Cf. Nissen ZBI 1279; cf. Wood p.332. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Smit after Joseph Wolf, printed by M. & N.Hanhart.

        Tropische Landschaft mit zwei Frauenakten.

A May 30, 1883 letter by Charles G. "Chinese" Gordon, written to a comrade from Jerusalem mentions landmarks of the Holy Land including the site of the crucifixion of Jesus and where Noah built his Ark

Jerusalem: , May 30, 1883. The 6-page autograph letter signed "C. G. Gordon", written from Jerusalem to a Mr. Button reads in part: "Jerusalem is very interesting and I have found out a deal more about the four rivers. Are people interested in this subject. I have found out that the flood went out at the Dead Sea. Also saw the place Noah built his ark. It was only in 776 AD it was placed at Ararat. Also I have found the Skull Hill where the crucifixion was, it is shaped just like a skull. "About a century ago, a 2,000-year-old tomb was discovered near a cliff called Skull Hill. Since the days when Constantinople legalized Christianity, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was erected to honor the crucifixion and burial of Jesus, it has been assumed that it was built over the correct location of where it happened. But interesting parallels between the garden tomb at Skull Hill and the descriptions in the Bible make one wonder if this might be the actual location. The Romans used this intersection for crucif

Diardigallus praelatus [Siamese Fireback (Lophura diardi)]

by the Author, [London 1883 - A fine image from John Gould's magnificent folio work 'The Birds of Asia'. 'These birds are quite common in Laos, Annam and south-west China. They live almost exclusively in woods and bamboo forests in the plains of the low hill-country. Family parties or solitary cocks are sometimes seen at the forest edges or on the road particularly in the morning and evening: they are not at all shy. The cock has a loud repeated cry: "pee-yoo-pee-yoo". He also has a piping call and can make a rustling noise with his wings.' (A.Rutgers Birds of Asia 1969, p.33). The intended geographical range of "The Birds of Asia" was enormous, and very much in keeping with the seemingly limitless self-belief of the 19th-century's best known ornithologist. In his all-encompassing work John Gould includes species from all corners of the eastern world, as Richard Bowdler Sharpe noted the work covers "Species from Palestine to the eastward, and from the Moluccas to the west". Gould chose to record the bird life from an area which, with the exception of the tropical areas of the American continent, includes the widest, and most colourful variety of bird life to be found anywhere in the world. The present plate is from a large number of images documenting the pheasants of the region, one of the most beautiful and varied of all bird families. Cf. Anker 178; cf. Fine Bird Books (1990), p.102; cf. Nissen IVB 368; cf. Sauer 17; cf. Wood p. 365; cf. Zimmer p.258. Hand-coloured lithograph by John Gould and H.C.Richter, printed by Hullmandel & Walton.

- Schweizer Postkonto vorhanden. **

Charcot medallion signed "F. Vernon 1883" in the metal. Charcot medallion measures 75 mm. in diameter, Salpetrière medallion measures 54 mm. in diameter. Both medallions mounted on velvet-covered board, velvet a little worn.

Rare medallion by the noted French sculptor, the obverse showing Charcot's head in profile looking to the right (the reverse is blank). This is the first of two medallions by Vernon commemorating Charcot; the second medallion, made after Charcot's death, is of gilt bronze and is slightly smaller. Jacobs, in his forward to M. E. Abbott's Classified and Annotated Bibliography of Sir William Osler's Publications (2nd ed. 1939), notes that Sir William Osler was persuaded to sit for Vernon in 1905 after being shown a medal of Charcot's likeness-possibly a copy of this 1883 medallion.

Charcot, known as the "founder of modern neurology," taught at the Salpetrière Hospital in Paris for 33 years. He is associated with at least 15 medical eponyms, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (peroneal muscular atrophy) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Charcot had a great influence on the developing fields of neurology and psychology, both through his own work and through that of his students, among whom were Sigmund Freud, Pierre Janet, William James, Georges Gilles de la Tourette and Alfred Binet. Histoire des Quartre Fils Aymon: Tres Nobles et Tres Vaillans Chevaliers

Paris: H. Launette, 1883 Paris: H. Launette, 1883. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. Grasset, Eugene. Book. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. One of 200 unnumbered copies on Papier de Chine. Georgeous color illustrations by Grasset and printed in chromotypography by Charles Grillot. A retelling of the "Chanson de Geste" of Charlemagne and his barons, this is one of the most important and influential illustrated books of the Art Nouveau era. Ray, in the Art of French Illustration, describes the book as epochal! Gillot persuaded Grasset to furnish "Merovingian" style designs to showcase chromolithographic book illustration. As stunning as the illustrations proper is how they were woven in and incorporated into borders and set on the page. See Ray, The Art of French Illustrated Book 357, 464, 465. Ironically, Grasset himself was ambivalent about the whole process of book illustration, which he found onerous in how it forced him to confine his visual ideas to the spatial limitations of the page. His splendid results, though, were surely the product of how he approached the project. He allegedly began with the borders and worked in, sometimes augmenting these with further decoration, and others, with full illustration, and generally, elements of both. The illustrations track the story very well and indeed, the book can be read using the illustrations alone, and ignoring the text. As far as influence, one sees it clearly in the wonderful series of young adult biographies issued by Librairie Furne (the Louis', Richelieu, Napoleon, etc.), many works of Job, etc. etc. Joints rubbed. A few minor spots on brown morocco. Original wrappers bound in.

Griechische Keramik: a Set of Four Greek Ceramics.

Ernst Wasmuth Berlin 1883 - Set of four double-page chromolithograph plates, by Ernst Wasmuth. (sheet size: 36 by 27 inches). Overall size: 103 by 79cm - framed and glazed. Rare set of these impressive plates with decorative colour lithographs depicting Greek pottery, such as amphorae, vases, bowls, and other storage and decorative vessels The large, finely executed prints were created in the studio Hein & Mosler in Berlin. The revival of interest in Greek ceramics was led by the travellers and cogniscenti who visited Greece and southern Italy in the mid to late 18th century. The Greek vase as an art form was first brought to the attention of an appreciative wider audience with the publication of a number or well-illustrated works on the collections of these dilletants. The most notable of this group was Sir William Hamilton (1730-1803), whose collection catalogue was published over a number of years starting in 1769. However, these early pioneers, working with a relatively small number of examples and using primitive techniques, were only able to begin to piece together the intricate story of this unique art form. It was not until a century later that art historians felt that they understood the full scope and history of ancient Greek ceramics in general and the superb work produced using red-figure technique in particular. The red-figure technique first came into use in about 500 B.C. and was the dominant type by about 530 B.C. With this technique, images are traced in outline and the background filled in with black glaze. Details are then drawn in by the painter with a black or brownish glaze. Genick (d. 1906) was one of the leading authorities of his day on the red-figure vases: an architect by training, he had a passionate love for and deep understanding of this great Athenian pottery. His study brought to realisation by Wasmuth's superb ffchromolithographs, illustrates for the first time these masterpieces of the potter's life-size art.chromolithographs, illustrates for the first time these masterpieces of the potter's life-size art.

THE WONDERUL CITY OF TOKIO OR FURTHER ADVENTURES OF THE JEWETT FAMILY AND THEIR FRIEND OTO NAMBO

Boston & New York: Lee and Shepard / Charles T. Dillingham, 1883.. Boston & New York: Lee and Shepard / Charles T. Dillingham, 1883.. xiii,[1],301,[3]pp. Large, thick octavo. Half gilt calf and marbled boards, pictorial panels of original binding bound in. Frontis and illustrations. A few incidents of marginal spotting, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. A superb pre-publication association copy, inscribed by the author to American Orientalist and modernist literary influence, Ernest Fenollosa, utilizing Fenollosa's Japanese honorific: "To Mast. Kano Fenollosa In this wonderful city of Tokio from his affec. friend Edward Greey New York Oct. 23 1882 [sic]." After serving with the British military during the Second Opium War, Greey (1835-1888) traveled to Japan in the diplomatic service and immersed himself in the country's language, culture and art. In 1868, he settled in New York, opening a shop specializing in Japanese art and antiquities, and subsidizing that income as a writer. In addition to formal works such as the present, which afford a valuable insight into aspects of Japanese history and culture from a Westerner's point of view, Greey was a prolific contributor to the pulp press and boy's papers, often under pseudonyms. He took his own life in 1888 under mysterious circumstances. As a somewhat older contemporary of Fenollosa, he would no doubt had ample reason and opportunity to make his acquaintance, either in the U.S. or during travels back to Japan on business. Beyond his considerable importance as one of the preeminent Orientalists of the last quarter of the 19th century, Fenollosa left an indelible influence on Ezra Pound and W.B. Yeats, who worked mightily to edit his unpublished manuscripts and notes and disseminate his ideas.

        LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. First American edition. about Fine. First State, intermediate B (BAL): lacking the image of Twain in flames on p. 441, but with "The St. Louis Hotel" caption on p. 443. An excellent copy in the publisher's half-morocco. Never rebacked, but it appears that the inner hinges have been closed and that small cracks at the head and foot of the spine have been repaired. With most leather-bound copies crumbling to bits, this one is decidedly above average.& & The author's first-hand look at navigating the Mississippi by riverboat and the changes to that area many years after the Civil War. Written concurrently with "Huckleberry Finn" and sharing several themes and even a few passages with that masterpiece. "The material offered by observations on the journey is various beyond enumeration, and much of it is extremely amusing. Hoaxes and exaggerations palmed off by pilots and other natives along the way upon supposed ignorant strangers; stories of gamblers and obsolete robbers; glimpses of character and manners; descriptions of scenery and places; statistics of trade; Indian legends; extracts from the comments of foreign travelers, -- all these occur, interspersed with two or three stories of either humorous or tragic import, or of both together." (Arsenal, Fonds Lambert MS/62). BEL EXEMPLAIRE, bien relié à l'époque en demi-maroquin. (Pia, 939 - Gay, III, 233 - Vrain, "Les Délassements du boudoir", n°17 - Pas dans Dutel). FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. Einzige Ausgabe; Sehr selten. - LThK VIII, 717; Lentner 2295. -- Ferdinand Janner (geb. 1836 in Hirschau; gest. - Beiliegend: Kommentierte hanschriftl.
