Le Avventure di Pinocchio: Storia di un Burattino.

Florence Felice Paggi 1883 - Small octavo. 236pp., + iipp. of advertisements. First edition. The enduring children’s classic about a mischievous marionette whose nose grows every time he tells a lie, in the original Italian and wonderfully illustrated with a full-page frontispiece of the titular character, as well as sixty-one additional woodcuts interspersed throughout the text. The first half of Pinocchio was originally published serially in the children’s magazine Giornale per i Bambini from 1881 to 1883, and it is thought that the story was not intended primarily as children’s literature, as it did not end happily: Pinocchio was hanged from a tree for his various moral failings. It was at the urging of his publisher that author Carlo Collodi (a pseudonym for Carlo Lorenzini) added the second half of the book, in which The Blue Fairy repeatedly comes to Pinocchio’s rescue, guiding him toward self-awareness and enabling his transformation from puppet to human. Popular in Italy at the time of its publication, the book and its author went on to gain international acclaim when the story was translated into English in 1892. Pinocchio is still cherished to this day and has been the subject of numerous adaptations, including popular versions by Disney and Steven Spielberg, who used the story as the basis for his 2001 film AI. This very rare first edition of the book – only five copies have come up for auction in nearly twenty-five years – is bound in quarter red calf and marbled boards by Devauchelle. Raised bands divide the spine into compartments, two of which bear the title and date in gilt. The endpapers are marbled. Housed in a clamshell box with marbled boards and red leather backing, title and decorations on spine in gilt. Some toning and light staining to the interior, a small closed tear to the margin of two pages, and several unobtrusive stamped and handwritten ownership signatures, otherwise a fine copy of this high spot of children’s literature. (Gottlieb/Pierpont Morgan Library 213; Osborne 2, p.1007). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Beautiful and Curious Birds of the World

published by the author for the subscribers, Boston 1883 - Contemporary black morocco gilt, gilt turn-ins, silk doublures and linings (rebacked, a few small repairs to edges). Cloth folding box. "A very rare book" (Bennett), limited to 200 copies, with beautiful plates on a grand scale including some of Smit's finest work. "In writing the present work I have striven to bring together some of the wonderful examples of the ornithological world, and to illustrate them in such a manner that others besides naturalists may become acquainted with the beautiful forms of bird life which inhabit our globe" (Preface). Given Cory's stated aim it is unsurprising that he has concentrated on the most spectacular bird family of all: the Birds of Paradise and their relatives the Lyre Birds and the Spotted Bower bird. Twelve of the twenty plates are from this group. The other eight include two of the best known extinct bird species: the Dodo and the Great Auk (also included amongst the extinct species is the Labrador Duck). The remaining depict many unusual species, with images of the Kiwi, the Ruff, the California Condor, the Black-headed Plover, and the Sacred Ibis. Bennett p. 28; BM(NH) I, p. 387; Fine Bird Books (1990), p. 87; McGrath p. 59; Wood 30; Nissen IVB 205; Nissen SVB 109; Zimmer p.137. (26 1/2 x 20 1/2 inches).         Der Erste und Zweite Kongress des Deutschen Schachbundes

Verlag von Veit & Co, Leipzig 1883 - viii+228 pages with diagrams and tables lacks frontispiece. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in 3/4 leather with black boards and gilt lettering to spine. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5210) First edition. The city of Leipzig was the birthplace of the Deutschen Schachbund on July 18th, 1877. Over the next two years sixty-two chess clubs would become members of the foundling chess federation. Hofrat von Gottschall became the chairman of the federation and Hermann Zwanzig was made the general secretary. The Deutschen Schachbund reconvened at the Schützenhaus on July 15th, 1879. To commemorate the meeting, a Schachkongresse master's tournament was organized. This inaugural event was largely an internal affair. Three invitations went out to Austrian chess masters: Berthold Englisch, Karl Pitschel, and Adolf Schwarz. The remaining nine seats went to German chess masters: Louis and Wilfried Paulsen, Max Bier, Ernst Flechsig, Fritz Riemann, Emil Schallopp, Arnold Schottlaender, Johannes Von Minckwitz, and Carl Wemmers. The field and format were extremely limited, with two rounds being played on most days of the tournament. Records have been such that ten of the sixty-six games have not survived to the present day, and therefore they have been omitted from this collection. However, what began with the Deutschen Schachbund in Leipzig in 1879 would in the next two years evolve into one of the stronger and more widely recognized of international chess competitions the world would see over the course of the latter 19th century. Berthold Englisch won this event with 9 wins out of his eleven games. Condition: Rebound in three quarter leather, lacks frontispiece portrait else a very good copy of a scarce tournament.         The Chess Monthly

Jas Wade, London 1883 - iv+380 pages with illustrations, diagrams, tables, and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") bound in quarter brown leather with gilt lettering to spine and blue marbled boards. From the library of Dino Ruggieri. Volume V (5). (Betts: 7-25). First edition. The Chess Monthly of Great Britain was one of the first to give properly annotated games. The principal editor, Leopold Hoffer, was helped enormously by having J H Zukertort as co-editor until his death in 1888. There were four regular sections: news, annotated games, problems and endgames. In addition, Hoffer carried on a profoundly bitter feud with his one-time benefactor, Steinitz. This publication should not be confused with The Chess Monthly published in the United States which was short lived from 1857-1862 and edited by Fiske and Morphy. Dino Ruggieri was born in, Pigüé a small city in the Buenos Aires province, October 22, 1921. His parents were both Italians, natives of Porto D'Ascoli. In their early years in Argentina, the Ruggieri’s family lived in the country, located about 45 miles from Pigüé. The family was engaged in agriculture. When Ruggieri was 8, his father purchased a home in Pigüé, where he lived until 2008. In 1938 he was involved in an accident and he was transferred to Buenos Aires for recovery. This was the beginning of his hobby of chess, both as a player over the board and by correspondence, but as well as a major collector of chess materials. After his recovery he became a prominent local chess player and very good representative in postal chess, where he represented Argentina in matches against Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and other countries. He was using the correspondence with his rivals to offer exchanges. Ruggieri was related to Mr Niemeijer and soon began exchanging materials and making important purchases. He also had frequent contacts with Gregorio Lastra, Normando Ivaldi, Gaspar Soria and Carlos De Veyga, all known collectors of chess. He died in 2009 in 2009 at the age of 88. Condition: Corners bumped, Ruggieri's stamp to front end paper, some foxing else a very good copy of a scarce item. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Felis Tigrina [Margay]

Daniel Giraud Elliot for the subscribers, [London 1883 - A very fine image from 'the best animal painter who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). A Central and South American cat, ranging from Mexico to Argentina, the Margay is similar in coloring and marking to the Ocelot, but is smaller. Elliott mis-identified this cat as Felis Tigrina, another South American cat. It is sometimes called the Tree Ocelot, they are agile in the forest canopy and sometimes spend their lives there. One of the most striking images from Elliot's magnificent work A Monograph of the Felidae or Family of Cats (London: 1878-1883) which described and pictured all the species of cats then known, and is still the most beautiful work on the subject. The work was prompted by a perceived need to resolve the confusion that had built up around the naming of the various species of Felidae , particularly amongst the smaller cats. Wolf worked from specimens provided by Elliot, who visited all the great museums and zoological societies on both sides of the Atlantic. This allowed Elliot to make a comparative study of skeletons and skins and reduce the number of apparently separate species by nearly a third. Joseph Wolf served an apprenticeship with a Koblentz firm of lithographers, and spent some time working in Leiden and Darmstadt, before moving to London in 1848. The quality of his images was recognized immediately and he was rarely without work, producing natural history pictures of the highest quality for the Zoological Society of London, Henry Dresser, George Gray and John Gould, amongst many others. Wolf's work for Elliot marks the high-point of his illustrative work and his images of the cats are considered by many to be his masterpieces. Cf. Nissen ZBI 1279; cf. Wood p.332. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Smit after Joseph Wolf, printed by M. & N.Hanhart.

        Felis Caudatus [Wild Cat]

Daniel Giraud Elliot for the subscribers, [London 1883 - A very fine image from 'the best animal painter who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). The Wild Cat Felis sylvestris is a wide-ranging cat 'once to be found in suitable habitats from Great Britain across Europe, the Near and Middle East, Central Asia into north and central India and much of Africa. It has now disappeared from the more heavily populated areas of central Europe; in Britain it still survives in the Scottish Highlands. Wild cats can exist in a wide range of habitats and climates. It is mainly nocturnal, hiding by day in dens under rocks or in hollow trees. Litters generally contain two to five kittens. Prey includes hares and rabbits, small rodents and ground nesting birds. The wild cat is generally a little larger than a domestic cat, light brown or grey, marked with darker stripes or spots. The size of the individuals, length and thickness of coat and type and intensity of markings, varies according to locality. Overall length from 31 to 45"; weight from 6 to 12lbs. The illustration here is an example of the wild cat from Russian Turkestan [ Felis silvestris caudata ]. Central Asian animals are large and thickly haired to cope with the harsh climate, and the spots are less distinct than those of the Indian form.' ( The Natural History Museum Library Big Cats A selection of magnificent illustrations by Joseph Wolf London: 1991, pp.58-64). A very fine image from Elliot's magnificent work A Monograph of the Felidae or Family of Cats (London: 1878-1883) which described and pictured all the species of cats then known, and is still the most beautiful work on the subject.
