Life on the Mississippi. With more than 300 illustrations. Sold by Subscription Only.

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1883 - Quarto. Original publisher's half calf, spine gilt-tooled in compartments with red and green morocco title labels, marbled sides, endpapers and edges. Contemporary ownership inscription. Minor rubbing to extremities, but an extremely smart copy indeed in excellent condition. Illustrated frontispiece, steamboat vignette to title page, illustrated plates and vignettes in the text throughout. First US edition, in the very scarce publisher's calf. This copy in intermediate state "A" with the first state illustrated tailpiece on page 441, but the caption on page 443 corrected to "The St Charles Hotel". Clemens's classic anecdotal travel narrative, which contains an autobiographical account of his childhood experiences, as well as his life on the river as a steamboat pilot. Huck Finn makes a lengthy cameo on pages 42–61, a story within the chapter detailing Huck and Jim's attempt to reach Cairo which does not appear in Huckleberry Finn, published two years later. To find a first edition copy of this title in any example of the publisher's calf binding, let alone one in such smart condition, is very uncommon. BAL 3411; Johnson, pp. 41-43.         Photographie originale de Guy de Maupassant avec envoi autographe signé à la comtesse Potocka

Rare original photographic portrait of the writer in full, realized by Achille Mélandri, enriched with an autograph signed signed "A Madame the Countess Potocka, his respectful friend, Guy de Maupassant".For a long time, Maupassant, like Balzac or Flaubert, was resistant to the diffusion of his portrait in photography as in engraving. In an autograph note kept in the library at Rouen, he summarized his idea on this subject: " I have made an absolute rule to never let my portrait be published whenever I can prevent it. The exceptions took place only by surprise. Our works belong to the public, not our figures. In 1890 he even threatened to sue one of his publishers, Charpentier, for he had inserted his portrait in Les Soirées de Médan . He asked him to recall all the copies in stock to destroy them. He never put his threat into execution but remained of the opinion that the photographs were in the private sphere. This is why the photographic portraits of Maupassant are rare and generally reserved for his relatives. Here he decides to offer it to the Countess Potocka, of whom he was one of the most fervent "Maccabees," or "dead of love," the group of admirers who surrounded the countess. Maupassant had a real passion for this muse, which inspired several characters, including Christiane Andermatt in Mont-Oriol , and Baroness de Frémines in Notre Cœur .To realize this portrait in full, it chose its neighbor of the street Clauzel, Achille Mélandri. Hydropath, poet and photographer of literary and artistic Paris, he had photographed celebrities such as Victor Hugo, André Gill and Sarah Bernhardt. He is famous for having worked with Emile Cohl on a method to animate the photographs that will lead him to the invention of the cartoon. One of the very rare autographed photographs of Maupassant, addressed to the mistress of one of the most important literary and artistic salons of the nineteenth century and loving passion half-confessed to the writer. Paris s.d. [1883] 10,7x16,4cm (image), 20,3x29,2cm (planche) 1 photographie monté sur carton

November 1934 in Berlin eigentlich Hans Gustav Bötticher) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, Kabarettist und Maler, der vor allem für humoristische Gedichte um die Kunstfigur Kuttel Daddeldu bekannt ist.         Friends, Though Divided. A Tale of the Civil War

London, Griffith & Farran, 1883 [first edition, with the advertisements dated '9.83']. Octavo, [viii], 384, 32 (advertisements) pages with decorative head- and tailpieces plus 8 plates (the frontispiece with a tissue guard). Pictorial blue cloth blocked in gilt and black; cloth a little flecked and marked, sunned on the spine, and lightly rubbed or worn at the extremities; light stains to the top and bottom edges; front flyleaf neatly excised; half-title browned and offset; small light stain to the blank top margin of two plates and a handful of leaves, with light associated cockling to about 25 consecutive leaves; notwithstanding, an agreeable copy. With a gift inscription on the front pastedown, 'R.M.W. Thirkell & G.L.A. Thirkell, Christmas 1904, from L.F. Piesse'. The Tasmanian Thirkell brothers, who would have been in their early teens when they were given this book, both served as officers in the Middle East, England and France during the First World War. The elder brother, Robert Mowbray Winston Thirkell, was awarded the MBE after the war, and was later a career officer, rising to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. The second, George Lancelot Allnut Thirkell, served with various field engineer units in Gallipoli and France. While stationed in England in late 1917 he married the well-connected divorcee Angela McInnes at the Kensington registry office. In 1920 the couple sailed to Australia, but Angela found life in suburban Melbourne dull and the marriage did not last. She returned to Britain around 1930 and soon began a successful career as a novelist under her married name, Angela Thirkell. In 1934 she published 'Trooper to the Southern Cross' under the nom de plume of Leslie Parker, a fictionalised retelling of the couple's eventful voyage from England to Australia on the troopship 'Friedrichsruh', told through the eyes of a character based on her husband George. Dartt, pages 61-62.

London: Macmillan and Co., 1883 - Octavo. Original purple cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards ruled in blind, black endpapers, partially unopened. Spine ends and corners gently rubbed and bumped, spine sunned, hinges gently cracked but firm, overall an excellent copy. Mounted photographic frontispiece with tissue guard, 4 plates, of which one is double-page and coloured, and numerous engraved and woodcut illustrations to the text. Ownership signature in pencil to half-title. First edition. Galton, a first cousin of Charles Darwin, is regarded as the founder of eugenics and the word finds its first appearance in this work. "Most of his practical eugenic suggestions were for forms of what might be called positive eugenics: research programmes for discovering which diseases were hereditary; tax schemes for encouraging intelligent people to marry each other and to have large families. However, many of the people who took up the eugenic cause (and there were thousands of such people in many countries) were more interested in negative eugenic measures (for example the sterilization of persons deemed 'unfit'). Particularly after the lengths to which the Nazi regime in Germany took eugenic practice the word developed ugly connotations and was subsequently dropped from the title of all the institutions that Galton had helped to found" (ODNB).         Life Among the Piutes: Their Wrongs and Claims...

Boston: Cupples Upham , 1883 8vo original cloth with gilt lettered spine, 268 pp. Minor rubbing and light staining to the covers and some extremity wear, mostly at top and bottom of spine, normal aging. Otherwise very good, and internally very nice. Before she took her married name Hopkins, Sara Winnemucca was known as Tocmetone or Thocmetony (shell flower) to her people. Winnemucca was her father's name, but that was the name associated to her by whites. Born about 1844 in Nevada, her people and family had a long positive association with whites. Her grandfather was a close associate and friend of Fremont, and was with him during his California campaign in 1846. She and some other members of her band were taken to California shortly thereafter, and several years later she attended a convent school in San Jose. In 1878 she served as a guide and an interpreter for General O.O. Howard during the Banncock War, and joined her father on a trip to Washington in 1879 to intercede for her people who were being removed to a reservation. The present work, which is the only book she ever published, contains as an important theme, corruption in the Indian service department, which made her rather unpopular at the time. Considered one of the most important Nevada books of the 19 century, this work is also significant because it tells the story of the relationship between the Indians and the white man from the earliest times from the Indian point of view.

        The Expansion of England.

London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1883. Two Courses of Lectures. Octavo (187 x 122 mm). Contemporary brown half morocco by H. Wood, spine lettered in gilt in compartments, marbled paper sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. Spine lightly faded, slight wear to paper on bottom edges, minor foxing to prelims and endmatter; an excellent copy. First edition, signed by the author on the title page. An exceptional association copy of this influential work, with the ownership inscription of British prime minister Archibald Primrose, Fifth Earl of Rosebery, to the half-title, his later Durdans bookplate to the front pastedown, and Durdans blindstamp to the title page. Rosebery was said to have been profoundly affected by this work, McKinstry suggesting in his biography that Seeley should be seen as his political mentor (p.161). Indeed "when Rosebery became Prime Minister in 1894, one of his first acts was to recommend that Seeley be awarded an honour. He was duly appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George" (ODNB). Rosebery wrote to Seeley on the occasion of the knighthood, stating that the award was not merely a testimony to "my admiration for yourself and your work, but to my staunch adherence to the principles of empire that you have so eloquently set forth" (Bell, p. 168). Rosebery became the first president of the Imperial Federation League, of which Seeley was a member, in 1884. This copy also bears Rosebery's extensive and insightful pencil marginalia, including chapter summaries and contradictions to the text, ("It is not possible to incorporate all subsequent American History in our own"). Rosebery read this work during his tour of Australia, undertaken between 1883 and 1884, dating the half-title "Dec. 7, 1883, Sydney, N. S. W." and noting the date he completed it "Jan 7. 1884, S. S. Pateena from Launceston to Melbourne". This tour is said to have "imparted an enthusiasm for empire that he never shed" (ODNB); the reading of this work during the tour potentially being a contributing factor. In 1872 Rosebery purchased The Durdans, near Epsom, described by Henry James as "a delightful house, full of books" (The Complete Letters of Henry James, 1880–1883, Volume 1, p.144). The Expansion of England consists of two lectures delivered by Seeley delivered at Cambridge in the autumn of 1881 and spring of 1882. The lectures were then substantially modified and published in book form. In this work Seeley "demanded a 'single conception' of English history, namely 'that the European policy and colonial policy are but different aspects of the same great national development' ... Seeley's profound reflexions on the magnitude, the responsibilities and the obligations of empire-buildling did not prevent the book from being perverted into the bible of those 'bombastic' imperialists upon whom Seeley directed his sharpest strictures" (PMM). Signed copies of Seeley's work are scarce, with none traced at auction.

Untersuchungen über die Methode der Socialwissenschaften, und der Politischen Oekonomie insbesondere.

Leipzig: Duncker & Humblot,, 1883. Octavo (217 x 138 mm). Later half calf, patterned paper boards, red morocco spine label, compartments ruled in gilt, edges red. Extremities lightly rubbed, hinges cracked but firm, contents lightly tanned, an excellent copy. First edition of the economic theorist's second major work; scarce. Carl Menger (1840–1921), founder of the Austrian school of marginal analysis, was both the most influential and the least read of the major figures who gave economic theory the shape it preserved from about 1885 to 1935. In the Untersuchungen, his second major work, he "undertook to vindicate the importance of theory in the social sciences. This was an effort that seemed necessary to him in view of the complete indifference or even hostility which most of his German colleagues, influenced by the antitheoretical attitude of the 'younger historical school' in economics, had shown towards his attempt in the earlier Grundsätze der Volkswirthschaftslehre (1871) to reconstruct economic theory" (von Hayek in IESS).

YOUNG JAPAN: Yokohama and Yedo A Narrative of the Settlementand the City from th

      - New York 1883, Pratt. Black cloth, very good, neatly reback- ed using the old spine, edges & corners worn, 2 volume set, 418+522p., index, contens very clean, co-published by Kelly, Yokohama, 14 x 23 cm. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION An important primary source, written by the former editor of the "Japan Herald," the "Japan Gazette," "Far East," "Nisshin Shinjishi" among several other publications, the author was especially qualified in reporting the news. This current work is his most exhaustive account of both foreign and Japanese activities in Yokohama from its early opening in 1858 back to 1789. * During this 21 year Period, history was made, for Japan was now open to the West, and the flow of ship and goods made Japan aware of her backwardness. Printed in Yokohama at the author's private printing office, this work covers the author's personal observations of the arrival of Lord Elgin, Mr. Alcock, Japanese experiences with foreigners, murdered Russians, assassinations of foreigners, the murder of Mr. Henry Heusken, Mr. Oliphant and rebel Satsuma forces, Ohara Mission, account of Choshu forts cannon attacks upon foreign vessels, Sir Harry Parks, life in Yokohama, trade, start of "Japan Times," Chamber of Commerce, &c. * This work also covers "The King of Liu-kiu's own Story. * Perhaps the most comprehensive early resource on Yokohama & foreigners there done during this period. * All editions were identical in this aspect, and the contents are identical. A contemporary insight to Yokohama life. ALWAYS RARE ! * NOTE ON THE PUBLISHER, PRINTING LOCATION OF THIS WORK: On the verso of the title page it states: Vol.1: "Printed at the Private Printing Office of the Author, No.16, Yokohama, Japan." . Vol. 2: "Printed at the "Japan Gazette" Office, no.70, Main Street, Yokohama, Japan." . While the title page states at the bottom, "London, Trubner & Co., Yokohama, Kelly & Co 1880, 1881" this book was only published in Yokohama, but distributed by Trubner in London. The publisher "Kelly" is referring to a later change in that publisher's name to "Kelly & Walsh." . Regardless of the above irregularities, the book was clearly privately printed in Yokohama at John R. Black's office. A very rare and early Yokohama printing in English. ***
