Recollections of the Kabul Campaign, 1879 & 1880

London: W. H. Allen & Co.,, 1883. Octavo. Original red cloth neatly repaired, gilt lettered spine, drab brown endpapers. Mounted photographic portrait frontispiece of General Roberts, 7 lithographic plates (3 folding), folding map. Discreet book label of Maurice F. I'Anson on front free endpaper. Spine sunned, touch of foxing to frontispiece and title. First edition of this uncommon account of the advance of the Kurum Field Force to Kabul, the occupation of the city, and of Roberts's march on Kandahar. The author served in the Bengal medical service during the Second Afghan War. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the title page: "Sir Charles Macgregor, with the Author's very kind regards, London June 1883". An attractive association copy: Macgregor (1840-1887) army officer, explorer, and military strategist, played a prominent part in the campaign; "when the second phase of the war began, Macgregor was appointed chief of staff to Sir Frederick Roberts, accompanying the advance from Ali Khel in the Kurram valley across the Shutar Gardan Pass. He took an active part in the battle of Charasia, capture of Kabul, and occupation of the Sherpur cantonment. On 11 December 1879 Macgregor recaptured from the enemy the four abandoned British guns at Kala-i-Aoshar outside Kabul. He took a leading part in the defence of Sherpur and the subsequent fighting in Maidan and Wardak. When Sir Donald Stewart arrived from Kandahar, Macgregor became his chief of staff until the defeat at Maiwand. Macgregor then commanded the 3rd infantry brigade of Sir Frederick Roberts's Kabul?-Kandahar field force during the march to Kandahar, and was present at the final victory over Ayub Khan's army on the banks of the Arghandab" (ODNB).

Théorie mathématique des phénomènes électro-dynamiques uniquement déduite de l'expérience. Deuxième édition 1883

      - Second, deluxe edition of "Ampère's greatest work," Theorie Mathematique? or Memoir on the Mathematical Theory of Electrodynamic Phenomena, Uniquely Deduced from Experience (DSB). Widely referred to as "the Principia of Electrodynamics," with this work Ampère founded the science of electrodynamics, now known as electromagnetism. "Volta's invention of the pile c. 1800 made it possible to experiment with steady electric currents and led to Oersted's discovery, in 1820" of an action of electricity on magnets that suggested "the presence of a magnetic force that is perpendicular both to the direction of the wire and to the shortest line from the wire to the magnet" - to the orientation one would expect. (Torretti, The Philosophy of Physics, 82). "Ampère, after an extraordinary bout of experimentation and mathematical theorizing, succeeded in explaining electromagnetic interaction by central forces acting at a distance? Ampère accounts for all electrodynamic and electromagnetic phenomena known to him by a force acting at a distance between infinitesimal elements of electric current, along the line joining them. According to Ampère's Law, any two such elements interact with a force directed along the line joining them and proportional to the product of their current intensities multiplied by a function of their directions and divided by their distance squared" (ibid). "Ampère also provided a physical understanding of the electromagnetic relationship, theorizing the existence of an "electrodynamic molecule" (the forerunner of the idea of the electron) that served as the component element of both electricity and magnetism. Using this physical explanation of electromagnetic motion, Ampère developed a physical account of electromagnetic phenomena that was both empirically demonstrable and mathematically predictive" (Wikipedia). In 1827 Ampère published the first edition of this volume and has been known since as this field's founding father. "A religious man, Ampère believed that he had proven the existence of the soul and of God" (Pickover, The Physics Book, 172). CONDITION & DETAILS: Paris: A. Hermann. Lancaster: American Institute of Physics. 4to (11 x 7.5 inches). [6], 164 pages, [2 large 20 inch fold-out plates], 2. Complete deluxe edition. Beautifully rebound in half-calf over marbled paper boards, gilt-ruled at the edge of the boards and at the spine. Black morocco spine label, gilt-lettered. New endpapers. Very slight toning at the edges of the first few pages; otherwise bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

        The Cultivation of the Olive

Hastings: J. Parsons, 1883. Octavo, 36 pp. (last blank), illustrated, limp cloth wrappers with printed titling label, as issued; fine copy. Olive oil production in the colony of South Australia. Scarce treatise on olive cultivation by John Harris Browne (1817-1904), a physician who accompanied Sturt to the interior in 1844-1845. Some credit the survival of the expedition to Browne's capability in arduous circumstances.Brown arrived in South Australia in 1840, and turned away from medicine towards pastoralism and agricultural projects. Much of the information in this booklet is drawn from practical colonial experience (for example, Browne notes that many of the common diseases of the Olive tree in Europe are absent in South Australia). He writes in the preface 'the following notes of the cultivation of the olive have been collected, chiefly from the most recent French and Italian books on the subject, and are printed on the hope that more knowledge of the great value so justly attached to that tree in Europe may induce my fellow Colonists to largely extend its cultivation to South Australia.'.

        Life on The Mississippi

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1883 Illustrated with 316 images by John Harley, Edmund Henry Garrett, and A. B. Shute. First edition, first state, with the illustration of the author and an urn bearing his initials in flames on page 441, and with the caption "The St. Louis Hotel" on the illustration on page 443. Publisher's decorative brown cloth, with pictorial panels depicting the Mississippi River stamped in gilt to the front board and spine, decorative ruling and ornamentations stamped in black to the front board. About fine, with very minor rubbing to the extremities, bright spine, secure hinges, former owner's inscription to a front flyleaf, minor soiling to the rear endpapers, else fine. Overall, an extremely handsome and unsophisticated copy. BAL 3411. Life on the Mississippi is a semi-autobiographical text about the history of the Mississippi River and the author's adventures riding on a steamboat from St. Louis to New Orleans. While much of the information in this text is factual, many of the individual episodes were fabricated to varying degrees and are better considered tall tales than accurate documentation. For example, Twain provides an account of the origin of his pseudonym, which he claims he took from Captain Isaiah Sellers. While the explanation of "mark twain" as a riverman's phrase for water found to be two fathoms deep (12 feet) is undoubtedly correct, it is likely that the stories regarding Sellers are at least partially embellished. In addition to offering insight into the author's earlier life, Life on the Mississippi provides historical context on the industrialization of the United States in the second half of the 19th century; throughout the text, Twain discusses the competition of railroads along with the growing cities in the American Midwest and South.. Illus. by Harley, John; Garrett, Edmund Henry; Shute, A.B.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine.
