THE UNTOWARD EFFECTS OF DRUGS: A PHARMACOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL MANUAL

1883 - LEWIN, Dr. Louis. THE UNTOWARD EFFECTS OF DRUGS, A PHARMACOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL MANUAL. Translated from the German by J.J. Mulheron. Detroit, Michigan: George S. Davis, 1883. Tall octavo, original embossed brown cloth, ornately stamped in gilt; 216 pages plus six-page index. Second Edition, Revised & Enlarged. Dr. Louis Lewin [1850-1929] was a German author of more than 200 major publications on the subject of pharmacology, including 12 books. He was the first researcher to study peyote with the Native Americans and the first to publish a monograph on kava. He directed a private laboratory in Berlin and he was considered the leading toxicologist in Germany. He published the first methodical analysis of the Peyote cactus, a variant of which was named Anhalonium lewinii in his honor. In Berlin, a street and a nearby underground station are also named in his honor. One of Lewin's most enduring tasks was to create a system of classification of psychoactive drugs and plants on their pharmacologic action. His original categories were Inebriantia (inebriants: alcohol or ether); Exitantia (stimulants like Kaht or ampehtamines); Euphorica (euphoriants and narcotics, like heroin); Hypnotica (tranquilizers, such as Kava); Phantastica (hallucinogens or entheogens, like peyote or Ayahuasca). A very rare book and in terric condition. Very Good or better condition (quite nice; minor wear covers with contents clean & tight; gilt-stamping is very bright & unrubbed). $750.00.         Rutherford Hayes makes a cryptic allusion to President Chester A. Arthur: "I have no quarrel with my old adversary that is in the least personal. If he has with me I do not know it."

Fremont, Ohio, September 26, 1883. 5.5" x 8.5". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""R.B. Hayes,"" 1 page, 5.5"" x 8.5"", Fremont, Ohio, September 26, 1883 to noted autograph collector Lewis Jacob Cist (1818-1885). Light folds, very light soling, else fine. ""Your letter of the 15th instant came during my absence. I am now so thronged[?] with matters requiring instant attention that I cannot at once lay my hand on what you wish, or even recall defiantly the fact that I have or have not that document you seek. But I will try to give it to you, to procure it somewhere. The hour[?] strikes me as it does you ?" unless I put in a disclaimer as to the personal sting. I have no quarrel with my old adversary that is in the least personal. If he has with me I do not know it."" Hayes, an early but ultimately unsuccessful champion of civil service reform, had one major victory in his efforts to weed out corruption in the federal workforce: his dismissal of Chester A. Arthur as Collector of the Port of New York. His initial efforts to dismiss the corrupt Arthur and his cohorts met with stiff resistance by conservative Republicans in Congress. Hayes was forced to await a Congressional recess to take executive action to get Arthur out of the lucrative post. "

        TREASURE ISLAND

1883 - STEVENSON, Robert Louis. TREASURE ISLAND. London [etc.]: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1883. First edition, first issue. Frontispiece map printed in three colors. viii, 292, + [8] adv. pp. Octavo, 18.7 x 11.8 cm, publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering to spine, top edge stained a matching green, black coated endpapers. Housed in a brown cloth clamshell box. Binding shows some edgewear and cloth has darkened slightly on spine, with some light spotting to upper board; inner hinges have superficial cracking but are sound; a contemporary bookseller's label has been partially removed from front pastedown; and there is occasional scant, light foxing to text leaves, though they are mostly quite clean. Very good condition overall. This most famous of stories of the sea was begun by Stevenson for the amusement of a schoolboy friend and not with a view to publication. It was offered, however, at the instigation of another friend and published, though the author's choice of title, THE SEA COOK, was altered. Stevenson himself in his letters relates the relish with which he entered on the writing of this tale of adventure and romance and the ease with which his ideas flowed as he wrote. This copy has the following points: "dead man's chest" not capitalized on pages 2 or 7; the first letter of "vain" broken in the last line, page 40, and looks like "rain"; the "a" not present in line 6, page 63; the "8" dropped from the pagination on page 83; the missing "7" overstamped in the pagination on page 127; period dropped from line 20 on page 178, after "opportunity";"worse" for "worst" in line 3 on page 197; and With first state October advertisements, marked "5R-1083", with this title listed incorrectly as having 304 pages. (Osborne II, p. 1030; Prideaux 11; Princeton/H. E. Gerstley Stevenson Coll. 22.8).

        Mr. Scarborough's Family

Chatto & Windus, 1883, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good, First editionA Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing, bound in 3/4 blue leather with coordinated blue cloth, top edge of the closed page blocks gilded (minor nicks Volume I's spine tips, minor rubs to the board corners and leading edges); an excellent Trollope novel in which a dying man seeks to determine which of his two heartless and unworthy sons should inherit his vast fortune. A rather nice copy of a Trollope triple-decker which never was reprinted in its 3-Volume form and which seems increasingly difficult to find in collectable condition. A Very Good + copy .

Berlin, 20. I. 1883. - 1 S. Gr.-4to. Games Played in the london International Chess Tournament, 1883

Jas Wade, London 1883 - lvi+371 pages with two tables and diagrams. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/2") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt decoration and lettering to spine and embossed chess board, pieces and lettering on cover. Edited with the assistance of the English Masters, Zukertort, Steinitz, Mason and Bird. Annotated by Zukertort, Steinitz, Mason and Bird. (Betts 25-16) (Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana 5216) First edition. The London 1883 chess tournament was a strong chess tournament among most of the leading players of the day. It was won convincingly by Johannes Zukertort (22 points out of 26) ahead of Wilhelm Steinitz (with 19 points). Remarkably, Zukertort was already assured of victory with three rounds to go, having scored an astonishing 22/23. He then lost his last three games against relatively weak players, probably due to exhaustion. The tournament established Zukertort as rivaling Steinitz to claim to be the best player in the world, and led to the World Chess Championship 1886 match between the two (the first official World Chess Championship match). The event was a double round-robin tournament. Marmaduke Wyvill contributed to organizing the tournament. The tournament was also notable for the first use of the double-sided chess clock, manufactured by T.B. Wilson of Manchester. A common story relates to an incident that occurred at the tournament banquet, when the St. George Chess Club President proposed a toast to the best chess player in the world and both Steinitz and Zukertort stood up at the same time to thank him. Research by Edward Winter suggests that this story has been embellished. The tournament book was dedicated to Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, for his patronage of the tournament. Time limit: 15 moves per hour.b>Condition:Spine ends restored, corners bumped else a very good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
