        Turnix Dussumieri, Temm (Little Hemipode)

London 1883 - This splendid hand-colored, folio-size lithograph, Turnix Dussumieri, Temm, from John Gould’s (1804-1881) monumental book "Birds of Asia" (1850-1883) is in mint condition. Measuring 15" x 21.75", this lithograph displays the author’s scientific skill and attention to detail. Commonly called Little Hemipodes, these birds are expertly hand-colored in shades of tan and brown with intricate patterning throughout their bodies and wings. John Gould was an English ornithologist, self-taught artist and naturalist. Gould first worked as a gardener under his father in the Royal Gardens of Windsor from 1818-1824, where he began his illustrations. He became an expert taxidermist, opening his own practice in London in 1824 and in 1827 he became the first Curator and Preserver at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. Through his work he was able to meet with the country’s leading naturalists and view new collections of birds given to the Zoological Society. His interest in birds was continually developing and in 1830 he published his first volume on birds, “A Century of Birds From the Himalaya Mountains.” For the next fifty years, Gould, his wife and artists working with them traveled around Asia, the East Indies and Australia. His wife Elizabeth and other artists were able to transfer his sketches to stone; hand print and hand-color them. One of Gould's greatest achievements, the “Birds of Asia” was in production longer than any of his other work, taking thirty-four years for the appearance of its thirty-five parts. The ornithologist was fascinated by the diversity of the exotic, colorful species of Asia, and he conveyed his enchantment to viewers, creating one of his most monumental and magnificent sets. For the preparation of “Birds of Asia”, Gould’s team of artists was joined by the German-born Josef Wolf, who, like Richter and Hart, would also become a long-term collaborator. The subjects of the plates are among the most varied of Gould's folios: trogons, kingfishers, sunbirds, woodpeckers, partridges, parrots, parakeets, pheasants, and many other genera are beautifully drawn, printed and colored. Gould placed many of the overwhelmingly vibrant, showy and elegant birds in settings appropriately lush and detailed. Perhaps more than in any of his other productions, he was careful to create an environment that was extensively delineated and highly accurate. In many of Gould's other books, the background was subtle or nonexistent, but he was clearly fascinated by the foliage and wildlife of Asia. The intended geographical range of the work was enormous and very much in keeping with the seemingly limitless ambition of the 19th century's most enterprising and prolific ornithologist. “Birds of Asia” was an overwhelming success, despite the great length of time over which it was produced. It was also a stunning feat in that, throughout the four decades of its production, the quality remained outstandingly high. The many noted subscribers included Queen Victoria, the Emperor of Austria, the kings of Hanover, Belgium, and Portugal, museums, universities, and institutions in cities worldwide.

Inquiries into Human Faculty and its Development

London : Macmillan and Co. 1883 - pp. xii, [2], 387; tissue-guarded sepia frontis, and four plates (plate iv in colour over two pages). Large octavo hardcover in publisher's deep mauve cloth with gilt lettering and device on spine; black end-papers. Armorial book plate of Thomas Herbert Lewin to front paste-down. Very good+ text block with good+ binding. Binding is secure with neat, square corners and light overall wear to cloth. Most significant flaws are the bumped spine ends with a few light frays to cloth at the head, and the spine fade with light blotches. Elsewhere, cloth has retained its colour, and still has that rich, deep mauve colour, and all lettering is clear. Inner and outer hinges also sturdy with no splits, but there are three pin-sized wormholes near outer front hinge. One of the wormholes extends through the inner margins of front matter, and through to inner margins of first twenty five leaves - no text affected, and the other two do not show through the board. Text block is sturdy with bright, near-crisp leaves, and foxing is light-to-very light and appears on title page, tissue guard, ffep and to upper and lower margins of colour plate - foxing also very minimal on frontis. All plates are present, and there are no inscriptions or annotations. A decent copy. [Attributes: First Edition]

Georgian Bay]Office of the Admiralty, London 1828 - Folding map/chart of Georgian Bay, originally surveyed by Captain Bayfield, published first in England in 1828, reprinted with corrections in 1864 and 1883. "Engraved by J. & C. Walker"- lower right margin. Great Lakes Surveys, 1815-25 background info. While Capt. Owen and Lt. Vidal completed a reconnaissance survey from Lake Ontario to Georgian Bay in the summer of 1815, Bayfield and his assistant Midshipman P.C. Collins, R.N., worked in the region of the Bay of Quinte. During the winter and summer of 1816 Bayfield assisted Capt. Owen with his surveys in the Niagara River and its headwaters in Buffalo, N.Y. With the completion of the Detroit River survey in 1816, Capt. Owen returned to England to compile his charts and left Lieut. Bayfield in temporary charge of the Great Lakes Survey. In June 1817 while working in Lake Erie, Bayfield was appointed Admiralty Surveyor for the Great Lakes, and it was from this date until 1856 that he made his greatest contributions to the history of Admiralty charting. Surveys in Lake Erie and the St. Clair River were completed by 1819, those for Lake Huron, Georgian Bay and the North Channel by 1822, and those for Lake Superior by 1825. Only in the last two season of his work was Bayfield able to charter a schooner in Lake Superior. Surveys in other seasons were carried out in sailing gigs powered by oars. Soundings along the coasts were made in summer, and the land surveys in winter while living in tents. While in Georgian Bay, Bayfield made the naval base at Penetanguishene his headquarters, and while in Lake Superior, Fort William. In May 1825, at Fort William, Bayfield met Commander John Franklin and his surveyor Lieut. George Back with a party of 33 men bound for the Western Arctic. The survey of Lake Superior was ended in the fall of 1825 and Bayfield with Collins returned to England to compile their charts for the Great Lakes. The first of these charts was published by the Admiralty in September 1828. quoted from Great Lakes Maps on line.

Thompson, formerly Captain Thomas, began his career preparing maps and atlases of Illinois and Iowa counties. At various times of his life he was in partnership with several different men, two of them, Louis Everts and Alfred Andreas, were old acquaintances from his army days. In 1870 Thompson and Everts began publishing atlases, releasing in that year what they called ?combination atlas maps.? In the 1870 atlases, lithographic illustrations were placed at the rear of the volumes. After 1870 the illustrations were interleaved with township maps throughout the atlases. The atlases were sold by subscription by traveling salesmen. Thompson and Everts dissolved their partnership in the early 1870s and in 1875 Thompson migrated to California. There he published atlases of Northern California. In partnership with Albert West, he issued atlases of Santa Clara County (1875), Alameda County (1878) and Solano County (1878). All are illustrated with lithographic views and sketches similar to those in the atlases of mid-western counties with a splendid array of lithographed plates showing the farms, houses, and other features of the settlements of Alameda County.

Felis Ornata [ Wild Cat ]

[London: Elliot for the subscribers, 1883. Hand-coloured lithograph by J.Smit after Joseph Wolf, printed by M. & N.Hanhart. A very fine image from 'the best animal painter who ever lived' (Sir Edwin Landseer). Now known as the Indian Desert Cat and (in another location) Asian Steppe Wildcat, these cats inhabit arid regions of Asia in northeastern India and Pakistan, and northern China and Mongolia. They are about the size of Domestic Cats. One of the most striking images from Elliot's magnificent work A Monograph of the Felidae or Family of Cats (London: 1878-1883) which described and pictured all the species of cats then known, and is still the most beautiful work on the subject. The work was prompted by a perceived need to resolve the confusion that had built up around the naming of the various species of Felidae , particularly amongst the smaller cats. Wolf worked from specimens provided by Elliot, who visited all the great museums and zoological societies on both sides of the Atlantic. This allowed Elliot to make a comparative study of skeletons and skins and reduce the number of apparently separate species by nearly a third. Joseph Wolf served an apprenticeship with a Koblentz firm of lithographers, and spent some time working in Leiden and Darmstadt, before moving to London in 1848. The quality of his images was recognized immediately and he was rarely without work, producing natural history pictures of the highest quality for the Zoological Society of London, Henry Dresser, George Gray and John Gould, amongst many others. Wolf's work for Elliot marks the high-point of his illustrative work and his images of the cats are considered by many to be his masterpieces. Cf. Nissen ZBI 1279; cf. Wood p.332.

        LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1883. First American edition. Near Fine. First State, with the image of Twain in flames on p. 441 and with "The St. Louis Hotel" caption on p. 443. In the original publisher's brown cloth with gilt vignettes on the front board and spine. A Near Fine copy with the rear hinge professionally repaired and some separation within the page block, otherwise a bright, tidy copy. The author's first-hand look at navigating the Mississippi by riverboat and the changes to that area many years after the Civil War. Written concurrently with "Huckleberry Finn" and sharing several themes and even a few passages with that masterpiece. "The material offered by observations on the journey is various beyond enumeration, and much of it is extremely amusing. Hoaxes and exaggerations palmed off by pilots and other natives along the way upon supposed ignorant strangers; stories of gamblers and obsolete robbers; glimpses of character and manners; descriptions of scenery and places; statistics of trade; Indian legends; extracts from the comments of foreign travelers, -- all these occur, interspersed with two or three stories of either humorous or tragic import, or of both together." ("The Atlantic Monthly," September 1883). Near Fine.

        AN INLAND VOYAGE

1883 - Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1883. 10 pp undated ads. Original bright green cloth decorated in black and gilt. First American Edition of Stevenson's first book (published five years after the London edition). Stevenson's third book, TRAVELS WITH A DONKEY, was published in 1879 both in London and in Boston -- making it Stevenson's first book to appear in America. ~This copy is bound in bright green cloth (decorated with black lines and a front cover vignette in gilt). Although this is the only color referred to in both the Beinecke and the Parrish collections, we have seen it also in olive-brown, terra-cotta and aqua-blue (presumably no priority). This is an unusually fine, bright copy, essentially without soil or wear at all and with the cover gilt remarkably bright. We have not had a better copy. Beinecke 14; Princeton 6B.
