Full 20th century brown morocco, raised bands, with original heavily gilt pictorial vignettes from the cloth binding inset into upper and lower boards. Portrait, photographs and engravings. Modest shelf rubbing at tips, faint crowned signet blindstamp in first three leaves, slight tanning at edges of textblock, a couple of preliminary and terminal blanks strengthened at gutter when rebound, but a very good, sound copy. First edition. Illustrated with thirty-two 'Artotypes," a four-figure plate of chromolithographs, and eighteen engravings. The extraordinary account of Commander Gorringe's expedition to transport the Egyptian Obelisk that now stands in New York's Central Park. A career officer in the US Navy, Gorringe was sent in 1876 in command of the "USS Gettysburg" on special service to the Mediterranean, where he remained until 1878, all the while contributing letters to the New York NATION. He came to fame in 1880 by his work in dismounting, packing, transporting and erecting the Egyptian obelisk ("Cleopatra's Needle") that had been offered to the US by the Egyptian Khedive Ismail in 1879 at the opening of the Suez Canal. On October 16, 1879, with the assistance of 100 Arabs, he rigged the obelisk into the hold of the steamer Dessoug. It arrived in New York on July 20, 1880 and it took 5 months to rig the Obelisk from the water to Central Park, where it arrived on January 22, 1881. The work also incorporates archaeological observations on and a census of Egyptian obelisks, along with accounts of the transfer of the London, Paris and Vatican Obelisks. Many of the photographs are credited to Edward Bierstadt, or to Hannoun & Bierstadt.

Following a series of celebrated expeditions to Gabon, in which he provided the first external account of gorillas and of the Pygmy peoples, French-American explorer Du Chaillu (1835-1903) travelled extensively across Scandinavia between 1871 and 1878. His account pays special attention to the antiquities of the prehistoric and Viking ages; it was followed in 1889 by a specialised study, The Viking Age. Owing to his exploits in Central Africa some have believed Du Chaillu to have been Edgar Rice Burroughs's inspiration for Tarzan. The Land of the Midnight Sun was originally published in the United Kingdom the previous year; there were several further editions and a German translation.

She has corrected an awkward sentence on page 257, in volume III. And she has underlined the words "and is a colossus of gossamer". (page 76, volume IV). Both volumes have the booksellers ticket on the rear pastedown: (Brown & Gross Booksellers Hartford CT). [TOGETHER WITH] TWO VOLUMES. Bound in original plum cloth (volumes III and IV), brown coated endpapers; wear to extremities, rear inner hinge just starting on volume 3, but very good overall; half orange morocco slipcase. SIGNED BY MARK TWAIN FOR HIS WIFE LIVY in both volumes. "Livy L. Clemens/1885". Some passages are marked in pencil, including the sentence "Fear nothing but fear". (page 48, volume II). The front pastedowns have Clara Clemens shelf markings and also the 1951 auction markings. What a great association! Both Mark Twain and his wife Livy, loved Thomas Carlyle and his work.

London Trubner 1882 - First edition. 8vo., 108 pp., original reddish-brown blind-stamped cloth gilt, spine faded, covers soiled, a very good copy. Thomas Evans Bell (1825–1887) was an English Indian army officer and writer. In 1841 he went to Madras in the East India Company's service. Bell was strongly critical of the East India Company, and its impact on peasant proprietorship in India. After the Indian Rebellion of 1857, Bell lost his position in Nagpur, for complaining over the head of his immediate superior about the treatment of the Ranis of the Nagpur kingdom. In Madras in the early 1860s, he was secretary of the Madras Literary Society, and edited its Madras Journal in 1861. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Ne riportiamo alcuni passi a titolo puramente esemplificativo. Bell'insieme.

Laguna Indian translation of McGufeyf's [sic] New First Eclectic Reader. Translated and printed by John Menaul

Laguna, New Mexico: [Laguna Mission Press], 1882. Complete set of 7 unbound, unopened and uncut gatherings, approx. 7¼" x 4¾", pp. [4], iv, [6]-12, [2 blank], 13-28, [2 blank], 29-44, [2 blank], 45-60, [2 blank], 61-76, [2 blank], 77-82 [i.e. 84], [7 blank]; consisting of Directions to the Book Binder, title page, introduction, and the full text of McGuffey's Reader in Laguna translation; an Ayer Linguistic duplicate, with an Ayer accession label on the verso of the last leaf, and a Newberry release stamp above it, and also on the Directions to the Book Binder leaf. McGuffey's 'Reader' was used in the instruction of Indian children of Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico, by Rev. John Menaul, a Presbyterian missionary in that village for many years, commencing 1876. He obtained some copies of the 'Reader' and interleaved them with his translation into Keres (the language of Laguna) using his own little printing press. Menaul was New Mexico's premier publisher of bilingual works. He got his first taste of printing in Africa and put his experience to use in New Mexico beginning in1877. Following four years of work with Navajos at Fort Defiance, Arizona, he assumed a post at Laguna Pueblo, fifty miles west of Albuquerque. There he launched what has since become known as the Laguna Mission Press. Recognizing that a key element of bringing Christianity to the Pueblo people was a common language, Menaul produced educational material and religious tracts in English and Keres, the Laguna tongue. After leaving Laguna Pueblo in 1889, he settled in Albuquerque and continued to print Spanish language religious works" (from Lasting Impressions: The Private Presses of New Mexico, 2005). Not in Graff; not in Streeter (who had at least one other Laguna Mission imprint).

Paris: A. Quantin, 1882. First edition. Quarto. Proofs before text of the tinted illustrations, all by Paul Avril. Title printed in red and black with a vignetter in blue, half-title is signed by Paul Avril. A wonderful binding, with the Jansenist concept of plain outside and burst of decoration on the inside. Housed in contemporary marbled-covered slipcase.

      - BKW, 19. - Berlin, August Hirschwald, 1882, 4°, VII, (1), 800 pp., Halbledereinband der Zeit. First Edition, First Appearance in Print of Koch's epochal paper on which he announced March 24 his discovery of the tubercle bacillus, this paper also contains the first statement of "Koch's postulates". The greatest and best known of all of Robert Koch's labors . For this work, in the face of the teaching of the day that tuberculosis was the result of nutritional disturbances, Koch took his place as the greatest bacteriologist of his day and one of the greatest physicians of all time. By the discovery of the actual cause of tuberculosis, real scientific progress was possible toward controlling this widespread affliction. For his discovery of the bacillus of tuberculosis Robert Koch received the Nobel Prize in 1905. LAND NATIONALISATION, ITS NECESSITY AND ITS AIMS: BEING A COMPARISON OF THE SYSTEM OF LANDLORD AND TENANT WITH THAT OF OCCUPYING OWNERSHIP

Original publisher's cloth. xiv, 240pp. index, [3] works to be consulted on the land question [1] ads WORKS BY THE SAME AUTHOR. 1st Edition/1st printing. PRESENTATION COPY, FROM WALLACE TO A FARMER AND AGRICULTURAL WRITER BASED IN ESSEX.As a dealer based in the Highlands it is very interesting to read Wallace's thoughts on the Clan system and how it transformed, following its collapse in the 18th century, into a system where Clan Chiefs morphed into landlords "who soon claimed and exercised all those absolute and despotic powers which the law of England bestowed upon them". The subject of land tenure is of massive relevance to this part of the world and, indeed, the year of the book's publishing (1882) was a time of great upheaval in the Highlands in terms of the "land-question" which saw agitation (rooted in the Isle of Skye) that led ultimately to the overturning of many of the "despotic powers" Wallace refers to. As a dealer based in the Isle of Skye it is also very pleasing to read Wallace's glowing description of the "sterling qualities and high character" of tenantry in this island, with particular reference to their military service.

April 6th. 1882" on both front blanks.Vellucent bindings are most often ascribed to Chivers of Bath - this is the first example by Birdsall of Northampton that we have ever seen. The roots of Birdsall of Northampton "stretch back to the early eighteenth century but it was in 1792 that John Lacy's Northampton bindery was acquired by William Birdsall, continuing in his family until 1961...In Birdsall's heyday, Gerring (Notes on Bookbinding, 1899) reported a staff of 250 engaged in making ladies handbags, fancy boxes, and stationary; as well as all types of bookbinding. The firm seemed always ready to experiment and careful records and samples were kept by Richard Birdsall, great-great-nephew of the founder, until he died in 1909...The firm's collection of over 3,000 finishing tools passed to the University of Toronto" (Maggs, Bookbinding in the British Isles II, #262, and #321).

Large collection of 85 books and magazines by and about Jean Lorrain.

58 early books (from 1882 to 1957) and 20 more recent ones, including 4 translations (into Dutch and English). Plus 2 old books that mention Lorrain sidedishwise, and 5 fin de siècle magazines.* Jean Lorrain (1855-1906), a symbolist writer turned decadentistic, presenting himself as a 'dandy of the mire', catering gothic novelettes, but also chronicles of contemporary life, full of slurs and slander to the sensation-hungry reader. A great stylist, a master of masks who tampered with drugs, dying as a syphilitic and drug addict. His doting mother lived on for another 20 years, providing material to his Eckermann, the author Georges Normandy who was able to enhance Lorrains reputation as an author in the 20s and 30s. Never quite forgotten, there was a Lorrain revival in the carefree Sixties and the studious Eighties, fostering many publications also included in this collection. This is an arsenal of 44 different titles with 14 reprints and differring duplicates, comprising 5 books with a lengthy dedication by Jean Lorrain, 3 with inserted letters by him and 2 with autograph poems; his first three titles, nice original illustrated wrappers, some fantastically illustrated books and several books and other publications about Lorrain. This collection, measuring two shelves, is a grandiose addition for any Lorrain specialist or library.
