The tape is neatly done and holds the book together well, the covers have some marks and age toning , mainly to the bottom of the rear cover. Internally it is very nice and clean and hasn't been opened for a while. No restoration other than the tape applied many years ago. A hard year to find.

Laguna Indian translation of McGufeyf's [sic] New First Eclectic Reader. Translated and printed by John Menaul

[Laguna Mission Press], Laguna, New Mexico 1882 - Complete set of 7 unbound, unopened and uncut gatherings, approx. 7¼" x 4¾", pp. [4], iv, [6]-12, [2 blank], 13-28, [2 blank], 29-44, [2 blank], 45-60, [2 blank], 61-76, [2 blank], 77-82 [i.e. 84], [7 blank]; consisting of Directions to the Book Binder, title page, introduction, and the full text of McGuffey's Reader in Laguna translation; an Ayer Linguistics duplicate, with an Ayer accession label on the verso of the last leaf, and a Newberry release stamp above it, and also on the Directions to the Book Binder leaf. McGuffey's 'Reader' was used in the instruction of Indian children of Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico, by Rev. John Menaul, a Presbyterian missionary in that village for many years, commencing 1876. He obtained some copies of the 'Reader' and interleaved them with his translation into Keres (the language of Laguna) using his own little printing press. Menaul was New Mexico's premier publisher of bilingual works. He got his first taste of printing in Africa and put his experience to use in New Mexico beginning in1877. Following four years of work with Navajos at Fort Defiance, Arizona, he assumed a post at Laguna Pueblo, fifty miles west of Albuquerque. There he launched what has since become known as the Laguna Mission Press. Recognizing that a key element of bringing Christianity to the Pueblo people was a common language, Menaul produced educational material and religious tracts in English and Keres, the Laguna tongue. After leaving Laguna Pueblo in 1889, he settled in Albuquerque and continued to print Spanish language religious works" (from Lasting Impressions: The Private Presses of New Mexico, 2005). Not in Graff; not in Streeter (who had at least one other Laguna Mission imprint).

Views of Kangaroo Point - Brisbane River and Toowoomba

Two original photographs from Queensland in Australia, taken circa 1882, both with embedded captions, mounted one recto and one verso to the same cardstock mount. The Kangaroo Point photograph was taken by Australia's photographer and colourist Albert Lomer whose studio name appears as the embedded caption. This photograph measures approximately 20,5 x 14 cm, being an albumen print with some age-toning, otherwise in very good condition. The Toowoomba photograph is a gelatin silver print photograph measuring approximately 19,5 x 15 cm, with indication of some creasing, otherwise in very good condition. The cardstock to which both photographs are mounted measures 21 x 15 cm. A very rare albumen print photograph of Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, taken by renowned photographer Albert Lomer around 1882, shows some of the foremost commercial buildings, including a shoreside timber yard, as well as the expanse of residences developing. This view is captured from the north side of the Brisbane River looking south, and likens a similar photograph from a slightly different spot, which Lomer may have taken the same day while creating his panoramic view of Brisbane River from Bowen Terrace, the panorama being composed of five views. [The John Oxley Library, in the State Library of Queensland, holds the original panorama, found in the Lomer Photograph Album dating to 1884.] This photograph bears the embedded stamp "Lomer & Cie". Albert Lomer was an important commercial photographer, active in Australia. He opened the first photographic studio in Brisbane in 1862, and worked from a variety of studio addresses in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Queensland from 1862 to 1900. He opened a studio at Sydney in partnership with Andrew Chandler, advertising that they were from W. Davies & Co. of Melbourne, where both had presumably trained. Their studio, The London Photographic Company, was at 419 George Street. By February 1867 Lomer was operating the business alone. In 1872-73 Lomer was working at 57 Bourke Street in Melbourne. He then established a very successful Brisbane studio at 158 Queen Street which lasted from 1874 until 1905, although he apparently no longer ran it after 1880. Branch studios were opened in various parts of the colony, including the Lomer studio at Mackay in 1887 (managed by J.P. Kemp), a studio at Toowoomba (1893-96) and one at Ipswich (1898-99). Lomer was again in Sydney in 1880-95. Several photographs from Lomer's Brisbane studio have survived, although mainly carte-de-visite portraits. Kangaroo Point is one of the earliest suburbs settled in Brisbane and subsequently, is one of Brisbane's oldest suburbs, rich in history. In 1823, explorer John Oxley described Kangaroo Point as a "jungle, fringed with mangroves with the higher land open forest, covered with grass". During the time of the subsequent convict settlement (1825-1841), Kangaroo Point was cleared and used for cultivation of crops. Subsequently, the area was opened up for free settlement, the first land sales taking place on 13 December 1843. Among the early purchasers was Captain J.C.Wickham, the Police Magistrate. Surveyor James Warner built the first house at Kangaroo Point in 1844. Kangaroo Point's first school was opened in 1861 by the Church of England, which came under the control of the Board of Education in 1867. In 1887, the Yungaba Immigration Centre was built on Main Street at Kangaroo Point to replace the facilities on William Street.

Currency, or the fundamental principles of monetary science, postulated, explained, and applied.

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1882 - Octavo. Original brown sand-grain cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, boards with two line blind rule border, dark brown endpapers. Minor nicks to spine ends, light dampstaining to outer edges of endpapers, front joint starting but still holding firm. A very good copy of this scarce title. First edition of the author's major work on monetary policy. Published posthumously with a prefatory memoir by the author's brother, Currency is a confident treatise on monetary theory, conversant with the best of contemporary economic thought, written by the Canadian-born Hugh Bowlby Willson (1813–1880), proposing a plan for monetary union between the United States, Great Britain, France, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland and giving a monetary (as well as an anti-protectionist) explanation of the business cycle. In a closely reasoned analysis, Willson attributes depressions in large measure to bank-financed excessive growth, the creation of "capital, largely fictitious, drawn from bills discounted." Willson was "deeply involved in the postwar 'Greenback' controversy in the United States. In a number of pamphlets and in testimony before a congressional committee in 1879, he argued strongly that notes issued by the state should be the permanent and exclusive circulating medium. He suggested the creation of a currency board to control the issue of paper money and proposed that the amount of paper money should be related to the volume of business transactions in the country" (R. Warren James and John S. Moir in Dictionary of Canadian Biography). Willson was a man of wide interests: a railroad builder, ship designer, and newspaper man, founder of the Canadian Independent in 1849 (which, pace its name, proposed annexation of Canada to the United States). Many of Willson's theories heralded monetary reforms which would take place after his death. Crawfurd Goodwin, Canadian Economic Thought, p. 133ff., noting that Willson was probably a young pupil of the great Canadian-American economist John Rae, author of Statement of some new principles of political economy (1834).       CHICAGO, ILL: J.H. Chambers & Co, 1882. Full Leather. Fine. First Edition, Second State. "Published originally the month following Jesse James's murder in 1882..." (Snell, flyleaf) "The facts cited in this extremely scarce biography of Jesse (and Frank) James were dictated to Frank Triplett directly through James's widow (who was his cousin as well), Zerelda (Zee) James and his mother Mrs. Zerelda Samuel. They disputed Triplett's claim for their participation in the writing of the book, but later sued the publisher for nonpayment of what they considered their royalties...," but the publsihers declared that 'persons entertaining any doubt as to the sources of our information or its full and reliable character can have all doubts removed by calling at our office, corner Third and Locust streets, and inspecting the contract, letters, receipts, etc., signed by Mrs. James and Mrs. Samuel.' ". The specific amount sought by Mrs. James and Mrs. Samuel was $2150, on a sale of 20,000 copies. The jury, however, found that only 4500 copes had been sold and awarded the two ladies $942." (Snell) An unarmed Jesse James was betrayed and murdered by Robert Ford, an ambitious recent hanger-on and member of his own gang who shot Jesse in the back of the head while James was standing on a chair adjusting a picture frame. Ford had cut a deal with Missouri Governor Thomas T. Crittenden to take out Jesse James for a $5000 reward. "Triplett's book was favorable toward Jesse James, but much less favorable toward Missouri's Governor Crittenden and this fact has led many to suspected that the governor was behind the book's disappearance. "..The grave of Jesse Woodson James was still fresh when his grieving but practical mother, Zerelda started selling tours of the family log cabin for a quarter. For another two bits, she'd take your picture next to the gravemarker or let you pick up a pebble from the gravesite. When the pebbles ran low, she'd send a neighbor's kid to the nearby creek for more..." (Scott Kraft in The Sunday Oregonian, June 17, 1979). Wright Howes (U.S. Iana) states that 'Triplett's book was issued in three editions, the first in May of 1882, the second between June and November, and the third in November.' Howe also says: 'It is alleged that effforts were made to suppress this biography. The scarcity of all issues tends to confirm this... Howe's notes that the first edition has a frontispiece illustration of Jesse returning from a raid ;the verso title page in the second edition is an bust of Jesse. The third edition contains the added chapter on Frank James. OUR COPY bears the frontis depiction of a portrait of Jesse and the "Jesse James Returning Home After A Raid "appears opposite page 72. A stunning and fine binding make this scarce "straight from the horses' mouth" biography quite sought after, and in this binding, extremely attractive to a collector of Western Americana, Gunmen, Lawmakers, True Crime, etc. 416 pp. Extremely scarce in original edition.

        Greece: Pictorial, Descriptive, & Historical.

London: John Murray,, 1882. With numerous engravings illustrative of the scenery, architecture, costume, and fine arts of that country and a History of the Characteristics of Greek Art by George Scharf. A New Edition, revised, with notes of recent discoveries, by H. F. Tozer. Large octavo (241 × 152 mm). Contemporary red crushed morocco by Riviere, richly gilt spine, three-line gilt border on sides, all edges gilt, richly gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers. Steel-engraved vignette title page, 19 steel-engraved plates, numerous full-page wood-engraved plates and illustrations in the text. Gilt supralibros of the Berwick Academy, Maine. One or two very minor abrasions to covers. An excellent copy. First edition edited by the distinguished geographer, classical scholar and friend of Edward Lear, H. F. Tozer (1829-1916), "he was a keen observer of the landscape (including the flora - he was a skilled botanist) and of the people who lived in it and the regimes under which they lived. In Greece especially he absorbed much local folklore". Christopher Wordsworth's comprehensive study of Greece, first published in book-form in 1840. Christopher Wordsworth - nephew of the poet - travelled extensively in Italy and Greece "and made his mark in the field of inscriptions and exploration: in 1832 he went to Paestum and to Pompeii, where he was the first to decipher the graffiti? During a prolonged visit to Greece and the Ionian Islands he made a conjecture as to the site of Dodona which was later corroborated. He was the first Englishman to be presented to King Otho. Passing over the heights of Mount Parnes in deep snow, he and his party were attacked by brigands; Wordsworth was injured in the shoulder by a stiletto, but managed to escape capture. Two books of a pictorial and descriptive kind ? followed his return" (ODNB). A choicely bound copy.
