        Die Aetiologie der Tuberkulose.

extract from Berliner Klinische Wochenschrift (vol. 19), Berlin, 1882. pp. 221-230; 31 cm. Garrison/Morton 2331: "Discovery of the tubercle bacillus announced March 24, 1882. This paper also contains a statement of `Koch's postulates'." Dibner, Heralds of Science no. 134: "Using the advantage of new improvements in techniques such as photomicroscopy, staining, oil-immersed lenses, and pure cultures, Koch and his colleagues placed the new science of microbiology on a sound basis. In the above paper, a triumph in science and medicine, Koch isolated and identified the tubercle bacillus, establishing the infectious nature of the disease, and opened the way to combat one of the worst scourges of mankind. Using body fluids and blood serum as host, Koch was able to cause anthrax and tubercular organisms to grow outside the body." "Koch is really our medical Galileo, who... introduced us to a new world. It is not too much to say that the demonstrations by Koch of the 'bacillus tuberculosis' (1882), is, in its far-reaching results, one of the most momentous discoveries ever made." --Osler, Evolution of Modern Medicine. Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize for this work. Printing and the Mind of Man 366. OB 573. Vg, in marbled paper covers.

Lon. , 1882.. 29 b/w photo plates. In 1880 Colonel Stuart Wortley and his wife visited Tahiti, a place they loved. He was a noted photographer who made some technical advances in the collodion process, and whose photographs of Italy and Tahiti are still collected. He took some wonderful photographs during their stay in Tahiti, and she wrote the knowledgeable and entertaining text. The photographic reproductions in this edition have the rich velvety appearance of actual prints. Though the text shows light foxing around the outer edges, each print is clean and free of foxing, and is protected by a tissue guard. Bound in original decorated cloth with an island scene in gold green and blue, all edges gilt. Slight lean to spine and minor wear to corners and spine ends.         Catalogue of the Collection of Pictures, works of art, and decorative objects, the property of His Grace the Duke of Hamilton, K.T.... Saturday, June 17, and Monday, June 19, 1882, and the following day [Five Portions co

234 pp. + plates. 8vo. Cloth. First edition. Illus. with 77 monochrome carbon print photographic plates. Buchanan 1. Two versions of this catalogue were produced, one without plates, and this, the illustrated version, with carbon prints by James Craig Annan (1864-1946), son of the Scottish photographer Thomas Annan. Annan was only 18 when he produced this series of prints (uncredited) for the spectacular Duke of Hamilton sale. There were 2213 lots auctioned over fifteen days in five sections which brought in 397, 000 British pounds! In addition to the paintings offered, which could have easily formed their own museum -works by Botticelli, Breugel, Da Vinci, Durer, Fra Angelico, Giorgione, Holbein, Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, Van Dyke, Veronese, and more- there was French furniture, Asian bronzes and lacquers, Sevres and Desden porcelain, and decorative objects in profusion. Photographs were somewhat new to illustrating auctions and "this is an early use of photography for a sale catalogue, " according to William Buchanan in his "J. Craig Annan. Selected Texts and Bibliography, " (Oxford. 1994), p. 137. Annan would go on to become an important British pictorial photographer and one of its master photogravure printers, contributing both is own work and gravures for other British photographers to Stiglitz' Camera Work (the January 1914 issue -no. 45- was devoted entirely to him). Scarce, especially in such beautiful condition and in such a fine binding. A near fine copy, rubbing on verso of plates, plates numbered in pencil.

Daterat »Maison Casilhac, Banyuls-sur-Mer 5.1. 23 Pyr. or.». 2 s.

Scott commended him for his 'high notions of the dignity of an art which he may be considered as having funded'...In breaking away...he devised what he described as 'comic epics in prose', which are in effect the first modern novels in English..."(OCEL).Hugh Hopkins, "THE doyen of the Glasgow booksellers was born at Galston, Ayrshire, near the famous "Patie's Mill," in 1831. While he was still a child his father came to Glasgow and began business as a second-hand bookseller in the Bazaar, then the centre of that trade and the haunt of the book-lovers and book collectors of the city. There at his father's stall Mr. Hopkins has seen the figures of the stalwart, plaid-girt Hugh Miller and many another famous man of letters now no more. In 1849 he began a business of his own, first at the foot of Glassford Street, and afterwards higher up. Since then he has occupied premises successively at 21 Buchanan Street, the house in which M'Nish, 'the modern Pythagorean' is said to have been born; at 8 Royal Bank Place, in Renfield Street, and in West Regent Street. Each of these shops has been a resort of the literati and bibliophiles of Glasgow in its day. Historian and antiquarian, journalist and poet have been wont to foregather in the back room there of an afternoon. What Mr. Hopkins does not know about editions, dates, peculiarities, and values is not worth knowing, and he is a connoisseur, not only of the outsides of the books, but of their contents. In books especially dealing with old Glasgow, and with the history and literature, ballads and songs of Scotland, he has a special interest, and he possesses an amazing knowledge of them. He has acted as the intermediary in many a famous transaction, and through him have remained at home many bibliographical rarities which otherwise might have left this country. He has also published several important works, including Napier's History of Partick, Ritson's Scottish Songs and quite recently, Fanjas de St. Fond's Journey through England and Scotland to the Hebrides in 1784. Mr. Hopkins is now assisted in his business by his son" (Who's Who in Glasgow 1929).
