        MARION FAY

1882. A Novel. In Three Volumes. London: Chapman & Hall, 1882. Original ochre cloth decorated in black. First Edition of "one of the thinnest and least satisfactory of the [Trollope] novels, relieved only by the abortive conspiracy of Lady Kingsbury and the [unscrupulous family] Chaplain" [Gerould]. The Marquis of Kingsbury's second wife does all she can to see that her husband's two children do not marry, so that her own children will inherit instead; into this cauldron comes Marion Fay, daughter of an old Quaker in town, who falls in love with the Marquis's son...~This is a near-fine set -- of a title which because of its ochre-colored cloth is notoriously difficult to find in decent condition (with the result that most sets encountered today have been rebound). The cloth is unusually clean, with the exception that (as is just about always the case) the spines are slightly dulled; wear is limited to just the very slightest, at the extremities. The original yellow endpapers are clean and exhibit scarcely any cracking, and the interior leaves are fine without any foxing. Sadleir (TROLLOPE) 64.

Internally clean, light spotting to prelims. marbled endpapers. No half titles. A romantic and evocative tale of family life in the wilds of the Scottish highlands.

        TWO ON A TOWER

1882. New York: John W. Lovell Company, n.d. [1882]. Original brown cloth decorated in black. Early (first?) American edition. This Hardy novel first appeared serially in Atlantic Monthly, where it ran from May through December 1882, paving the way for it to be pirated once complete. The three-volume English edition came out at the end of October, as well. Early in December, three American editions came out -- the authorized one, in Henry Holt's "Leisure Hour Series," plus two pirated ones, in John Lovell's "Lovell's Library" and in George Munro's "Seaside Library." Purdy notes,~The Holt and Munro editions are listed in Publishers' Weekly, 9 December. The Lovell's Library edition is not listed at all and may have been a bit earlier. It [the cheaper version bound in wrappers] is dated 14 November, but such dates are hardly trustworthy.~This is one of the copies bound in cloth, with "Lovell's Library" at the top of the spine. Condition is near-fine (just a bit of rubbing at the corners), with some faint foxing on the extremely cheap textual paper. See Purdy p. 47.

YOUNG AMERICANS IN JAPAN OR THE ADVENTURES OF THE JEWETT FAMILY AND THEIR FRIEND OTO NAMBO

Boston & New York: Lee and Shepard / Charles T. Dillingham, 1882.. xiii,[1],372pp. Large, thick octavo. Half gilt calf and marbled boards, pictorial panels of original binding bound in. Frontis and illustrations. Closed tear in lower margin of one leaf, otherwise a very good copy. First edition. A superb association copy, inscribed prior to publication by the author to American Orientalist and modernist literary influence, Ernest Fenollosa, utilizing Fenollosa's Japanese honorific: "To Mast. Kano E Fenollosa Our young American in Japan with the author's affectionate regard. Manchester by Sea Mass Oct. 10. 1881" After serving with the British military during the Second Opium War, Greey (1835-1888) traveled to Japan in the diplomatic service and immersed himself in the country's language, culture and art. In 1868, he settled in New York, opening a shop specializing in Japanese art and antiquities, and subsidizing that income as a writer. In addition to formal works such as the present, which afford a valuable insight into aspects of Japanese history and culture from a Westerner's point of view, Greey was a prolific contributor to the pulp press and boy's papers, often under pseudonyms. He took his own life in 1888 under mysterious circumstances. As a somewhat older contemporary of Fenollosa, he would no doubt had ample reason and opportunity to make his acquaintance, either in the U.S. or during travels back to Japan on business.

Cetywayo and his White Neighbours; or, Remarks on Recent Events in Zululand, Natal, and the Transvaal

London: Trübner & Co., , 1882. or, Remarks on Recent Events in Zululand, Natal, and the Transvaal. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt, device of an eight pointed star over a circle to front cover gilt, triple black rules to head and tail of front cover and spine, continuing across the back cover in blind. Spine bumped and a little rubbed, slight wear to corners, some foxing to the prelims, as usual , and some to the margins, but on the whole a very good copy. First edition, first impression. One of just 750 copies. On his return to Britain following the outbreak of the First Anglo-Boer War, Haggard had been unable to find a publisher willing to take on his "denunciation of Britain's South African policies." (ODNB) Eventually he paid Trübner £50 to put out this small run, but in confirmation of the publishing world's reticence, in two years it had sold just 154 copies. However, following the runaway success of King Solomon's Mines, the edition sold through and a second was published in 1888, reaching a fourth by 1891.

Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World

Chicago.: Henry S. Stebbins.. Copyright 1882.. Color maps both hand colored and printed, black and white illustrations, decorative endpapers, 122pp, 14 x 12 inches, decorative gilt lettered cloth covered boards (hardbound). Front cover detached, rear hinge starting to split but still attached, covers soiled and rubbed exposing edges of boards, front free endpaper loose, slight insect damage to right margin of title page, short tear to lower left edge of first few pages, toning to Table of Contents page from newspaper article adhered to verso of title page, occasional soiling to outer margins of some pages (not affecting image areas). There is a tear to the lower centrefold of two maps: Alabama etc and the map of Dakota and Manitoba. Overall, a well preserved copy of a scarce volume. This is an interesting transitional atlas from the heyday of the atlas with handcolored plates to the printed color atlas. The maps appear to have been printed with the wax engraved process, with the resulting loss of clarity compared to the engraved atlases of the earlier nineteenth century, but the handcolored maps of the states are decorative and detailed. These, each with decorative oval cartouche title, are titled "New Railroad and County Map..." of: New York; Pennsylvannia, New Jersey, Delaware & Maryland; Virginia & West Virginia; North Carolina; Alabama, Georgia, Sth. Carolina & Northern Florida; Arkansas, Louisiana & Mississippi (interestingly there is a single page printed color map of Florida on the verso of this double page map); Indian Territory and Northern Part of Texas; Southern Part of Texs (sic) with inset of Western Part of Texas; Kentucky & Tennessee; Michigan & Wisconsin; Missouri; Kansas; Nebraska; Colorado; Minnesota; Dakota and Manitoba; Wyoming; Montana and Northern Idaho; Utah; Southern Part of Idaho; Oregon and Washington Territory; New Mexico; Northern California and Nevada; Alaska; Southern California and Arizona. Other maps are printed color. All double page maps are tipped in; most of the maps are double sided. There are also illustrations of Flags of All Nations, Animal and Vegetable Life of the Different Zones, Races of Man, a map of the Solar System, statistics on Comparative Wealth of States, Population & Area information, plus portraits of U.S. Presidents. .

        Vera: or, The Nihilists

[New York: privately printed for the author,], 1882. A Drama in a Prologue and Four Acts. Octavo. Original grey-blue wrappers printed in black. Housed in a purple cloth slipcase and chemise. Interleaved with blank leaves as issued. Wrappers a little rubbed and tanned, closed tear to lower joint, small chip from corner of upper wrapper. A very good copy. First American edition, the second overall and the sole lifetime edition to print the complete text. Vera - Wilde's first play - is one of the legendary rarities in modern literature. First issued in an unprocurable edition in 1880, the work was then revised by Wilde, who added an entirely new prologue; it is this version which was printed for the production copies in New York in 1882. This printing, important in its own right, is known in only a handful of copies and represents the earliest procurable dramatic text by the most important English language dramatist of the century.

        Under the Sunset

London: Sampson, Low, Marsten et al, 1882. First Edition. Parchment. Very Good Minus. Fitzgerald, W. And Cockburn, W.V.. Fitzgerald, W. And Cockburn, W.V. First Edition. Parchment. INSCRIBED BY STOKER. Stoker's first book and uncommon. A presentation copy, inscribed 'The Sick Children with the authors love/January 1882.' Presumably inscribed as a donation to a hospital or charity. Evidence that the receiving children read the book (or at least the beginning) can be found within the margins where page numbers written in a childish script can still be seen. These markings only appear on the first 10 pages and are written in pencil.Covers and spine are moderately soiled, with gilt and red lettering and borders. This book has been expertly rebacked with new endpages. This restoration is barely perceptible as the material used is an exact match and the 'new' endpages are contemporary to the publishing date. The text is overall clean and bright with paper just slightly yellowed with age. There are occasional smudge & pencil marks which are explained below. Still a nice copy of a work which usually turns up in very poor condition. LIT/082104.

COLTON'S NEW MAP OF LONG ISLAND

New York: Colton & Co., 1882.. Folding map, two sheets together measuring 30 x 62 1/4 inches, with full period color. Bound into original tall brown cloth boards, stamped in blind and gilt, rebacked by white paper. Splits on folds neatly repaired. Very good. With a large inset of "Brooklyn, New York, Jersey City, Hoboken, etc." This is probably the largest commercially published map of Long Island to date, which indicates the increasing population and importance of Long Island. Development in the eighteen years since the publication of the 1865 map has been dramatic. Explosive growth can be seen throughout Queens, especially in Jamaica and Garden City. Railroads now crisscross the island, with the Brooklyn & Montauk Railroad extending along its southern coast as far as Sag Harbor. The map was evidently first introduced in 1873. Rumsey (167) lists a 1888 edition. Not in Phillips.

WHY FRAU FROHMANN RAISED HER PRICES and Other Stories

1882. London: Wm. Isbister, 1882. Original sage green cloth decorated in black. First Edition of this collection of five short stories, published in December 1881. In addition to the title story, they are "The Lady of Launay," "Christmas at Thompson Hall," "The Telegraph Girl" and "Alice Dugdale." Curiously, there is also a two-volume Isbister edition of this book (though with continuous pagination), yet this single volume edition is earlier. Since Trollope had wanted the book to be published in one volume only, but then died a year later, Sadleir hypothesizes that Isbister grabbed the opportunity of issuing left-over copies of the book at a two-volume price now that its author could no longer complain.~This copy is in sage green cloth, which is the color most often (though not frequently!) encountered; copies were also bound in blue and in scarlet, without priority. This is a very good-plus copy -- minor wear at the lower extremities, and a trace of soil on the front cover. Sadleir places FRAU FROHMANN in the upper half of Trollope's books in terms of scarcity, and in fact this is only the third copy (and first green one) that we have handled. Sadleir (TROLLOPE) 61.

        POT-BOUILLE

Paris: G. Charpentier, 1882. First edition, WARMLY INSCRIBED by the author, Émile Zola to Edouard Noël, most probably the important author and critic. Noël wrote with Edmond Stoullig, "Les Annales du Theatre et de la Musique," for 1891, which contained a comprehensive review of every new play presented at the principal Paris theatres during the past year, as well as much other interesting information. One of Zola’s plays was included in the work. 8vo, in a handsome binding by Stikeman of three-quarter deep brown morocco and marbled boards, the spine gilt ruled and stippled on raised bands and lettered in gilt in one compartment, retaining the publisher’s original front and rear wrappers of yellow paper printed in black, t.e.g.,others untrimmed. 521 pp. A fresh, fine and very well preserved copy with the original wrappers bound in and well protected by an attractive binding. The binding is in fine condition, the wrappers very well preserved and quite fresh, internally, unusually nice and with only very light age mellowing. SCARCE FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED BY ZOLA WITH A LARGE BOLD SIGNATURE. POT-BOUILLE (Stew Pot) is the tenth novel in the Rougon-Macquart series. The novel is an indictment of the hypocritical mores of the bourgeoisie of the Second French Empire. It is set in a Parisian apartment building, a new and modern development in housing at the time. The title reflects the disparate and sometimes unpleasant elements lurking behind the building's new and decorative façade. When the English edition was issued, the publisher was charged with obscenity and found guilty under the Obscene Publications Act. A very scarce copy of the first edition and utterly rare in signed, presentation format.

Catalogue of the Collection of Pictures, works of art, and decorative objects, the property of His Grace the Duke of Hamilton, K.T.... Saturday, June 17, and Monday, June 19, 1882, and the following day [Five Portions complete]

London: Christie, Manson & Woods, 1882. First edition. Cloth. A near fine copy, rubbing on verso of plates, plates numbered in pencil. 8vo. Illus. with 77 monochrome carbon print photographic plates. Two versions of this catalogue were produced, one without plates, and this, the illustrated version, with carbon prints by James Craig Annan (1864-1946), son of the Scottish photographer Thomas Annan. Annan was only 18 when he produced this series of prints (uncredited) for the spectacular Duke of Hamilton sale. There were 2213 lots auctioned over fifteen days in five sections which brought in 397,000 British pounds! In addition to the paintings offered, which could have easily formed their own museum -works by Botticelli, Breugel, Da Vinci, Durer, Fra Angelico, Giorgione, Holbein, Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, Van Dyke, Veronese, and more- there was French furniture, Asian bronzes and lacquers, Sevres and Desden porcelain, and decorative objects in profusion. Photographs were somewhat new to illustrating auctions and "this is an early use of photography for a sale catalogue," according to William Buchanan in his "J. Craig Annan. Selected Texts and Bibliography," (Oxford. 1994), p. 137. Annan would go on to become an important British pictorial photographer and one of its master photogravure printers, contributing both is own work and gravures for other British photographers to Stiglitz' Camera Work (the January 1914 issue -no. 45- was devoted entirely to him). Scarce, especially in such beautiful condition and in such a fine binding. Buchanan 1.

CHART OF THE WORLD CONTAINING THE LINES OF OCEANIC MAIL STEAM COMMUNICATION AND OVERLAND ROUTES (Color World Map 39" X 62")

Gotha: Justus Perthes.. Good. 1882. Hardcover. 1882 world map mounted to old cloth backing with old red binders tape along edges to protect the map. It is an 8-fold map and separated at all the folds, but because it is mounted to the cloth backing it is neatly a one-piece large map. The map has some mild foxing to the borders, but it is in very attractive condition. The colored area of the map is free of foxing. The back of the cloth is foxed but clearly isn't the area that will be seen, it is only indicative of the backing being done probably in the late 19th century as well. It is housed in brown cardboard covers that are separated at the spine and with the title, date, cartographer, and details (in both English and German) about the map. The map itself is in English. It has metal loop hangers attached to the back so it can be hung without a frame. A rare and wonderful map. .
