Original cartoon of lady inspecting servant candidates: one Irish, one Oriental, one Black, and one of uncertain origin. Ink on paper, signed Tho Worth/N.Y./1882

New York, 1882. 7 x 6-3/4 inches. Caption:" Mrs. Brown advirtises [sic] for a servant, and is enabled to make a choice according to her national instincts from the variety offered." Along with two ALS. Fine. Peters, Currier & Ives, I, p. 70 et seq . Thomas Worth (1834- 1917), "Uncle Tommy" as he was known to all his acquaintances and friends, sold his first comic sketch to Nathaniel Currier in 1855; he was to become one of the most popular of Currier & Ives's artists. He specialized in comic and caricature work--one of his "Darktown Comics" lithographs sold 73,000 copies--but also did racing and sporting scenes, as well as other subjects. In addition, he illustrated Dickens's Old Curiosity Shop, and contributed to "Judge" and other periodicals. He was a careful craftsman, often revising his work until he had achieved the best possible effect, and was noted for his enormous personal charm. Both letters are to Rev. E.F. Strickland (who has docketed letters and drawing with dates received); one, of September 12, 1883 regrets the delay in responding to the clergyman's request for a sketch, and states that of all such requests the artist has received, no one has ever bothered to thank him for the favor! The second, dated October 20, forwards a "Judge" drawing "on a subject which every woman who has kept house will readily understand, the hiring of servants. As the tide of emigration seems ever to be on the flood, we are inundated with a variety of material...an advertisement for 'help' is now answered not alone as in former times by the Irish but by wanderers from all parts of the globe."

Sheet size: 24 x 29.6 cm. (Elegantly matted in Ivory rag board with gilt French line decoration. Sized to 14 x 18 inches). With dedication leaf 'Edith Cast Faber from her Mother (a loving memento) painted by Mrs. J.A. Faber about 1882-1890'. Classified as florilegia: ornamental flowers (or here fruit) painted for beauty rather than scientific or medicinal appeal, this lovely Still life of Red Plums was evidently painted from nature by an accomplished hand. Although the art of flower painting was a favored, traditional pastime for gentile women of nineteenth century Britain, few works boast the refined sense of composition, color, light and shading as evidenced by the practiced, skillful execution of this still life. To date the works by Mrs. Faber are undocumented however this elegant composition clearly reflects her appreciation for and mature expression of the glories of the garden, the natural world and the still life tradition.

The Movements and Habits of Climbing Plants. Third Thousand. [Second Edition]. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM AND FINAL TEXT

John Murray, 18828vo., Second Edition, Third Thousand, with 13 woodcuts in the text, small inoffensive label scars to front free endpaper; original green arches-style cloth, gilt back, chocolate endpapers, uncut, small skilful repair to bottom of backstrip, a remarkably well-preserved, bright, crisp copy. With 32pp publisher's catalogue (dated January 1882) bound in at end. The woodcut illustrations are by George Darwin, the author's son. The first printing of the first edition was in Vol. IX of the Journal of the Linnean Society of London (dated 1867 but issued in 1865). The second edition, the first in book form (greatly revised and enlarged) was published in 1875 with a second 'Thousand' (actually only 500 copies) in the following year. The present edition is the first to carry the author's appendix to the Preface, and a five-line list of errata on last leaf of Contents. Since these refer to author's errors rather than to literals and remain uncorrected through subsequent reprintings from stereos, this represents the final text of the work. SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION. Freeman (Darwin), 222; Freeman (BNHB), 909.

TWO ON A TOWER. A ROMANCE

London: Sampson, Low, Marston et. al, 1882. First Edition. hardcover. Front joint of first volume cracking with a small nick at the head of the spine. Text clean, bindings bright and firm with minor rubbing. Three volumes bound in early blue 3/4 morocco by Riviere with gilt lettering and design on the spines and five raised bands. All half-titles present, and the original green cloth spines are bound in at the rear of each corresponding volume. The first volume has been SIGNED by Hardy above the title. A novel relating the love affair between Lady Viviette Constantine and Swithin St. Cleeve who meet at the astronomical observatory that St. Cleeve has set up atop an abandoned monument tower on Lady Constantine's estate. Hardy made considerable revisions in the text of all three volumes, beginning with the second edition of 1883, and added new prefaces, as the various later collected editions of Hardy's works appeared. In his Preface to the 1895 Wessex Edition, Hardy wrote that his novel was "the outcome of a wish to set the emotional history of two infinitesimal lives against the stupendous background of the stellar universe, and to impart to readers the sentiment that of these contrasting magnitudes the smaller might be the greater to them as men." These original texts, as they were published in book form, are now generally considered the most sought after and the current Penguin series of Hardy's novels uses this text, even reproducing the title page of volume I. Sadleir ranks this as Hardy's "seventh scarcest book" and all original editions of Hardy's novels that have been SIGNED by him are exceptionally uncommon.
