        Leaves of Grass

Philadelphia: Rees Welsh & Co., No. 23 South Ninth Street, 1882. Philadelphia: Rees Welsh & Co., No. 23 South Ninth Street, 1882. First Edition thus. Hardcover. Near Fine. First Philadelphia Edition, first issue, with advertisement for Leaves of Grass and Specimen Days and Collect tipped in at front fly leaf (as the Harvard copy). 8vo: 382pp, portrait of Whitman inserted following p. 28. Publisher's finely woven mustard-yellow cloth, spine and upper cover lettered and decorated in gilt, mottled blue vein-pattern end papers. An excellent copy, about Near Fine, dust-soiled top edge, cloth lightly rubbed in places, spine gilt dulled (but completely legible), spine tips perhaps rebuilt (though skillfully so), contents clean and unmarked, pages lightly toned. BAL 21419. Myerson A2.7.d. Grolier American 100, 67. & "Leaves of Grass ultimately went through six entirely different editions, and each edition had multiple issues, often with different bindings, different paper size, different cover designs, and different configurations of contents. . . . [as Whitman] altered the arrangement and number of poems, shifted titles and typefaces, and kept Leaves of Grass a shifting series of quite different texts—each one responding to a particular biographical and cultural moment—instead of a single book. . . . Each edition of Leaves is essentially a different book, not just another version of the same book." In June, 1882, Whitman signed an agreement with the Philadelphia publisher Rees Welsh & Co. to bring out Leaves using the Osgood plates of the sixth, banned edition. (On March 1, the District Attorney of Boston had advised James R. Osgood & Co. that Leaves of Grass fell "within the provisions of the Public Statutes respecting obscene literature" and advised Osgood to "withdraw" and "suppress" the book. Osgood asked Whitman to expunge the offending passages; Whitman, of course, by and large, refused, and Osgood "decline[d] to further circulate the book.") "Whitman's name appears twice on the binding, once in a gold stamped framed facsimile autograph on the front cover, and again on the spine, where the name forms the very ground of the 'Leaves of Grass' that appear above his name in both words and visual emblems, as if the leaves are literally growing from Walt Whitman. . . . And on down the spine is Whitman's beloved hand and butterfly emblem, now with the butterfly-soul appearing on the verge of taking leave of the body-hand: Whitman, still suffering the aftereffects of a stroke, was now convinced his life was near its end. The odd yellowish-olive cast of the cover cloth suggests autumn now instead of the summer-green of the early editions, and the tall grass on the spine looks like hay ready for the harvest. . . . Whitman never again created a new edition of Leaves, though he did add two 'annexes' and repackaged the book in different ways." (Folsom, Whitman Making Books/Books Making Whitman) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        Les Mollusques Marins du Roussillon.

1882. Paris, J.B. Bailliere & Fils, et chez les auteurs, 1882-1892. 2 volumes. Royal-8vo. With 165 plates. Contemporary green half morocco, gilt lettered spines, the last 2 parts in original wrappers. B.M.(Nat.Hist.) I, 277. This rare work was issued in 26 parts in a very limited edition, one of the early scientific works making use of original photographs (in the first 13 parts). 'One of Europe's most outstanding collectors was Philippe Dautzenberg, of Ixelles, near Brussels. Heir to a fortune in the carpet industry he could afford to spend a great deal of money on shells and conchological literature. A born collector, Dautzenberg accumulated specimens with a zeal and a discernment rarely equalled; and by 1914 it was estimated that his cabinets contained thirty thousand species ... with E. Bucquoy and G.F. Dollfus (he) wrote a large work on the marine molluscs of the Roussillon, South France, generally recognised as the best available account of western Mediterranean molluscs' (Dance p. 165)..

Nettlau 46; Stammhammer I. 19, 2: Erste Ausgabe, sehr selten! Autograph musical quotation signed

. 4 measures encompassing the range of the violin, marked "Etendue du Violon," notated on a large oblong octavo leaf (167 x 227 mm.). Inscribed "A mon collegue [!] et bon ami A. Fischer... Camillo Sivori Paris 17 Fevrier 1882." Very slightly foxed; slight abrasion to right-hand edge.. Sivori "studied violin with Paganini's former teacher Giacomo Costa... Between October 1822 and May 1823 Paganini was in Genoa, and, favourably struck by the young violinist, decided to give him lessons... Paganini regarded Sivori as the only pupil for whose formation he was responsible ('the only person who can call himself my pupil', he wrote in 1828)... His virtuoso repertory was based principally on his own compositions and those of Paganini, but unlike his teacher, Sivori also became an exceptional performer of Classical and early Romantic chamber music... A stylish composer, who displayed a lovely melodic vein, Sivori composed around 60 pieces." Flavio Menardi Noguera in Grove online

Catalogue of the Collection of Pictures, works of art, and decorative objects, the property of His Grace the Duke of Hamilton, K.T.... Saturday, June 17, and Monday, June 19, 1882, and the following day [Five Portions co

London: Christie, Manson & Woods, 1882.. 234 pp. + plates. 8vo. Cloth. First edition. Illus. with 77 monochrome carbon print photographic plates. Buchanan 1. Two versions of this catalogue were produced, one without plates, and this, the illustrated version, with carbon prints by James Craig Annan (1864-1946), son of the Scottish photographer Thomas Annan. Annan was only 18 when he produced this series of prints (uncredited) for the spectacular Duke of Hamilton sale. There were 2213 lots auctioned over fifteen days in five sections which brought in 397, 000 British pounds! In addition to the paintings offered, which could have easily formed their own museum -works by Botticelli, Breugel, Da Vinci, Durer, Fra Angelico, Giorgione, Holbein, Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, Van Dyke, Veronese, and more- there was French furniture, Asian bronzes and lacquers, Sevres and Desden porcelain, and decorative objects in profusion. Photographs were somewhat new to illustrating auctions and "this is an early use of photography for a sale catalogue, " according to William Buchanan in his "J. Craig Annan. Selected Texts and Bibliography, " (Oxford. 1994), p. 137. Annan would go on to become an important British pictorial photographer and one of its master photogravure printers, contributing both is own work and gravures for other British photographers to Stiglitz' Camera Work (the January 1914 issue -no. 45- was devoted entirely to him). Scarce, especially in such beautiful condition and in such a fine binding. A near fine copy, rubbing on verso of plates, plates numbered in pencil.

        THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY

1882. In Three Volumes. London: Macmillan and Co., 1882. 24 pp Vol III ads dated Dec 1881. Original dark blue-green cloth decorated in black. First Edition, second impression, of James's best-known work, the account of Isabel Archer and her many suitors -- of varying ages, varying wealth, and varying ethics. THE PORTRAIT OF A LADY has become the high-spot title of Henry James -- far and away his most sought-after title. The first impression was dated 1881 on the title pages, was published in three volumes in November 1881, and consisted of 750 copies; this second impression (not so stated) is dated 1882 on the title pages, was published in January 1882, and consisted of only 250 copies (some of these 250 copies were issued in three volumes in the same cloth as the first impression, while some were issued three-volumes-in-one in red cloth); Macmillan next published a one-volume "New Edition," in June 1882, consisting of 1000 copies.~This copy is in three separate volumes, which is to say in the same cloth binding as the first impression. Condition is good-to-very good: although the spines look quite nice, with bright gilt, there is faint evidence of lending library labels once having resided on each front cover, one volume has wear on an outer joint, and all three volumes have some cracking of the endpapers at the gutter. Each volume bears a personal bookplate plus a personal "Memorial Room" plate; in one volume the inner 3/4-inch of the front endpaper is glued down to the paste-down. The 1881 first impression, essentially identical to this set except for the date on the title pages, would today bring $35,000 or more in fine condition -- so this set is a possibility for someone wanting a copy of James's big title in the same binding, at a far far lower price.         Die Aetiologie der Tuberkulose

Extract, pp. 221-230; 31 cm. Garrison/Morton 2331: "Discovery of the tubercle bacillus announced March 24, 1882. This paper also contains a statement of `Koch's postulates'." Dibner, Heralds of Science no. 134: "Using the advantage of new improvements in techniques such as photomicroscopy, staining, oil-immersed lenses, and pure cultures, Koch and his colleagues placed the new science of microbiology on a sound basis. In the above paper, a triumph in science and medicine, Koch isolated and identified the tubercle bacillus, establishing the infectious nature of the disease, and opened the way to combat one of the worst scourges of mankind. Using body fluids and blood serum as host, Koch was able to cause anthrax and tubercular organisms to grow outside the body." "Koch is really our medical Galileo, who... introduced us to a new world. It is not too much to say that the demonstrations by Koch of the 'bacillus tuberculosis' (1882) is, in its far-reaching results, one of the most momentous discoveries ever made" --Osler, Evolution of Modern Medicine. Koch was awarded the Nobel Prize for this work. Printing and the Mind of Man 366. Very good in marbled-paper covers. Stock#OB573 oversize.

TWO ON A TOWER. A ROMANCE

London: Sampson, Low, Marston et. al, 1882. First Edition. hardcover. Front joint of first volume cracking with a small nick at the head of the spine. Text clean, bindings bright and firm with minor rubbing. Three volumes bound in early blue 3/4 morocco by Riviere with gilt lettering and design on the spines and five raised bands. All half-titles present, and the original green cloth spines are bound in at the rear of each corresponding volume. The first volume has been SIGNED by Hardy above the title. A novel relating the love affair between Lady Viviette Constantine and Swithin St. Cleeve who meet at the astronomical observatory that St. Cleeve has set up atop an abandoned monument tower on Lady Constantine's estate. Hardy made considerable revisions in the text of all three volumes, beginning with the second edition of 1883, and added new prefaces, as the various later collected editions of Hardy's works appeared. In his Preface to the 1895 Wessex Edition, Hardy wrote that his novel was "the outcome of a wish to set the emotional history of two infinitesimal lives against the stupendous background of the stellar universe, and to impart to readers the sentiment that of these contrasting magnitudes the smaller might be the greater to them as men." These original texts, as they were published in book form, are now generally considered the most sought after and the current Penguin series of Hardy's novels uses this text, even reproducing the title page of volume I. Sadleir ranks this as Hardy's "seventh scarcest book" and all original editions of Hardy's novels that have been SIGNED by him are exceptionally uncommon.

DENVER DOLL, The Detective Queen; or, Yankee Eisler's Big Surround. Beadle's Half Dime Library. Vol. XI. No. 277

New York:: Beadle and Adams, No. 98 William Street.. 1882.. 4to. 11" x 8-1/8". 1st edition, later issue (Johannsen BEADLE 277-1/2DL). Ca 1888. Not in Hubin. 15, [1] pp. Text triple column. Last page an advert.. Printed self wrappers.. Spine indents, indicating the work was probably bound at one time. (and, no doubt accounting for its survival, as well as relatively. nice condition). Overall VG+ - NF (paper beginning to yellow, as. usual).. The 'Denver Doll', our research indicates, has the distinction of being the one of the earliest female detective characters in US fiction. To quote Wheeler, " .. she was a splendid specimen of young womanhood.... It was no secret she was a detective; it was no secret she was a terror to. [sic]" This 'Denver Doll, The Detective Queen' was a creation of the prolific dime novelist Edward L. Wheeler, who initially appears in this 14 November 1882 issue of Beadle & Adam's HALF-DIME LIBRARY series, however, despite the charm & competence imbued by Wheeler, the 'Denver Doll' failed to rouse the enthusiasm of the early 1880's dime novel customers & she quickly faded from the scene a few months later with the publication of the 4th series title [March 1883]. This quick public expiration has, in turn, contributed to the present scarcity of the 'Denver Doll' series titles, as well as her lack of notoriety in today's mystery-collector circles... in fact, many believe that the first female detective in US literature was Amelia Butterworth, who appeared much later in Anna Katherine Green's 1897 work, THAT AFFAIR NEXT DOOR (cf. Blain. FEMINIST COMPANION, p. 456). This the first title in the Denver Doll series and can be said to be quite rare. . Large wood engraving to front wrapper.
