New York Harper and Brothers 1882 - 2 volumes. First edition. With 235 illustrations and a large folding map in the rear pocket of the first volume. 8vo, publisher’s original sea-blue cloth lettered and elaborately decorated with pictorial overall designs in gilt and red on the upper covers and spines. An unusually bright, clean, tight and very fine copy with virtually no evidence of use or age. A VERY FINE FIRST EDITION COPY OF THIS CORNERSTONE WORK BY ONE OF THE PREMIER EXPLORERS OF THE 19TH CENTURY. Du Chaillu is also the author of EXPLORATIONS AND ADVENTURES IN EQUATORIAL AFRICA. An explorer and traveler of great note, he discovered the gorilla in Central Africa and his work includes some of the seminal works of early Central African exploration. Subsequent explorations were made to other areas with significant books coming from the travels. In the case of Scandinavia, an area of the globe which held very special significance for Du Chaillu, he authored this important and very readable set of books and additionally, penned a prized study of the Vikings, issued as here in two volume format which came about especially because of his immersion into the experience of Scandinavia which he writes about in LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN. THE VIKING AGE, was an exhaustive research work on all aspects of the Viking Age. Du Chaillu drew from two sources: 1) "Sagas" or parchment records of individual Viking people which were found in Iceland and which noted the major events of the lives and glorious deeds of the race; 2) Archeological artifacts housed in the Museums of Denmark, Sweden, Norway , England, France, Germany, and Russia. He writes in clear and detailed language of the life, religion, laws, customs, and mythologies of the Northmen and includes an impressive array of drawings mostly of archeological artifacts. We find intriguing chapters on chess, poetry, riddles, gossip, jugglers and horse-fights,ornaments of all sorts, and ship design. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

John Jorrocks, Esq. : Four depictions of Surtees's colorful fox-hunting hero of Handley Cross and other sporting novels; watercolor on board, each signed G. Bridgman and dated 1882

n.p, 1882 - Of Bridgman, Mitchell notes, "Little can be traced of this caricaturist whose figures all have delightful smiling faces with rosy cheeks and noses. A set of four hunting watercollours is recorded, as is "Boxing night at the music hall". It is possible that the watercolors mentioned are the ones offered here; they appear to have been done as illustrations to one of Surtees's novels, probably his masterpiece, Handley Cross Size 10-1/2 by 14-1/2 inches. The Cockney grocer, resplendent in hunting scarlet and mounted on his intermittently faithful Arterxerxes, is shown waving a greeting to cap-touching rurals, approaching a stream during a hunt, emerging safely on the other side, and wending his way home as dusk falls. .         Marion Fay

London: Chapman and Hall, 1882. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of this Trollope triple decker in the publisher's original cloth, decorated in black (spine ends a bit worn, evidence of prior lending library label to each volume's front board, common soiling, lending library label to each volume's front pastedown, label number neatly written on each volume's spine, page blocks settled, Volume III's hinges cracked); a very good copy of a Trollope title generally found quite faded and worn when found in the scarce original cloth, with copies tending to have been so worn as to have required rebinding. The novel centers around the Marquis of Kingsbury and his second wife who labors to see that the children from the Marquis's first marriage do not marry, so that her own will inherit his title and wealth. Then, of course, onto the scene then comes Marion Fay, a girl from the town who falls in love with the Marquis's son. A Very Good copy of a Trollope triple decker that often turns up rebound.

        Die fröhliche Wissenschaft.

Chemnitz, Schmeitzner, 1882. 8vo. Contemporary half cloth with gilt lines and gilt leather title-label to spine. A very fine, fresh, and completely unrestored copy. 255 pp. With the ownership signature of Oskar Schlemm, dated 1884, to title-page.. The very rare first edition, first issue - one of only 212 copies - of what is arguably Nietzsche's most important work, namely the work in which he introduces his three most important concepts: "God is Dead", the "Eternal Return of the Same", and the "Superman", which together provide the basis for almost all of his later writings, including "Also sprach Zarathustra" (part 1 of which was published the following year). "The Gay Science" was originally published in the usual 1.000 copies, but by 1886, 788 of them remained unsold; these remainders were sold to the publisher Fritzsch, who destroyed the original title-page and re-issued the work along with new material and with a new title-page in 1887. Thus, merely 212 copies exist of this first issue, making it one of the scarcest of Nietzsche's works to find in the first edition. This main work of modern philosophy is absolutely central to Nietzsche's philosophy. Not only does it introduce the concepts and notions that we now primarily connect with Nietzsche, it also constitutes one of the clearest and most profound expositions of his philosophy. "The Gay Science" contains Nietzsche's first consideration of the idea of 1) the "eternal recurrence", a concept which would become critical in his next work "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" and underpins much of the later works. In fact, Nietzsche himself considers section 341 to be the very first articulation of the basic idea of Zarathustra:"What if some day or night a demon were to steal after you into your loneliest loneliness and say to you: 'This life as you now live it and have lived it, you will have to live once more and innumerable times more' [...] Would you not throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse the demon who spoke thus? Or have you once experienced a tremendous moment when you would have answered him: 'You are a god and never have I heard anything more divine.'"2) "God is dead", formulated for the very first time in section 108:"After Buddha was dead, peopleshowed his shadow for centuries afterwards in acave,-an immense frightful shadow. God is dead:but as the human race is constituted, there willperhaps be caves for millenniums yet, in whichpeople will show his shadow.-And we-we havestill to overcome his shadow!"And in paragraph 125 we find the famous sentence depicting the parable of the madman seaching for God, accusing us all of being the murderers of God:"'Whither is God?' he cried; 'I will tell you. We have killed him-you and I. All of us are his murderers..."3) the "Uebermensch" or "Superman", which is mentioned for the first time in Nietzcshe's writings in section 143. "Nietzsche wrote "The Gay Science", which he later described as "perhaps my most personal book", when he was at the height of his intellectual powers, and the reader will find in it an extensive and sophisticated treatment of the philosophical themes and views which were most central to Nietzsche's own thought and which have been most influential on later thinkers. These include the death of God, the problem of nihilism, the role of truth, falsity and the will-to-truth in human life, the doctrine of the eternal recurrence, and the question of the proper attitude to adopt toward human suffering and toward human achievement." (From the Cambridge University Press translation of 2001).Oskar Schlemm was a circuit judge in Uelzen i Lower Saxony. His son, Walter, belonged to Ernst Hardt's circle of friends, being a fellow George- and Nietzche-worshipper. Schaberg: 35

"Bird's Eye View of the City of Denver, Colorado"

Cincinnati, OH: Strobridge Lithograph Company, 1882. EARLY VIEW OF DENVER, CO. Dimensions are apprx. 28"x 59" There are 16 vignettes surrounding the view of Denver in 1859.They include City Hall, Denver High School, Rocky Mountain Brewery, Union Depot, Tabor Block, St. Mary's Academy, Arapahoe County Court House, St. James Hotel, Silver Queen Hotel, Central Presbyterian Church, St. Johns Cathedral, Col. National Bank, Windsor Hotel, Lavetta Place, National Mining & Industrial Exposition Building, and Tabor Opera House. With the invention of lithograph in the 19th century, the birds-eye view became not only a useful tool for documentation but as a marketing tool for developers as well as merchants. These visually attractive panoramas were easily understood and perhaps more meaningful to a public largely unskilled in map reading. The first formal survey of town views began in the 16th century with the publication of George Braun and Frans Hogenburg's Civitates Orbis Terrarium (Cologne, 1593). It took Braun and Hogenburg over forty years to collect the 305 plans contained in the volumes that form the complete work. The town view can be seen from the 16th century onwards.. Book.
