        Birch Bark Poems

Chillicothe, OH: Charles F. Lummis, 1882. Soft cover. Near Fine. 64mo - up to 3" tall. A small string-bound booklet of Lummis' poems printed on birchbark. Birch bark has a pale violet/grey tint for all but the middle facing leaves. With: two copies of a 1928 Lummis Foundation catalogue entitled "The Works of Chas F. Lummis," published the same year of his death. The catalogue indicates that the booklet went out of print in 1882. Lummis first published this set of poems in 1878, between semesters at Harvard. This 1882 printing is concurrent with the time in which he was living at his first wife's family farm in Chillicothe and working at a newspaper before famously tramping across the country to Los Angeles. Very little discernible wear to poetry booklet or the two catalogues.

Dentelles. All edges gilt. A fine set."Fielding is generally agreed to be an innovating master of the highest originality He himself believed that he was 'the founder of a new province of writing' and Sir W. Scott commended him for his 'high notions of the dignity of an art which he may be considered as having funded'.In breaking away.he devised what he described as 'comic epics in prose', which are in effect the first modern novels in English."(OCEL).Hugh Hopkins, "THE doyen of the Glasgow booksellers was born at Galston, Ayrshire, near the famous "Patie's Mill," in 1831. While he was still a child his father came to Glasgow and began business as a second-hand bookseller in the Bazaar, then the centre of that trade and the haunt of the book-lovers and book collectors of the city. There at his father's stall Mr. Hopkins has seen the figures of the stalwart, plaid-girt Hugh Miller and many another famous man of letters now no more. In 1849 he began a business of his own, first at the foot of Glassford Street, and afterwards higher up. Since then he has occupied premises successively at 21 Buchanan Street, the house in which M'Nish, 'the modern Pythagorean' is said to have been born; at 8 Royal Bank Place, in Renfield Street, and in West Regent Street. Each of these shops has been a resort of the literati and bibliophiles of Glasgow in its day. Historian and antiquarian, journalist and poet have been wont to foregather in the back room there of an afternoon. What Mr. Hopkins does not know about editions, dates, peculiarities, and values is not worth knowing, and he is a connoisseur, not only of the outsides of the books, but of their contents. In books especially dealing with old Glasgow, and with the history and literature, ballads and songs of Scotland, he has a special interest, and he possesses an amazing knowledge of them. He has acted as the intermediary in many a famous transaction, and through him have remained at home many bibliographical rarities which otherwise might have left this country. He has also published several important works, including Napier's History of Partick, Ritson's Scottish Songs and quite recently, Fanjas de St. Fond's Journey through England and Scotland to the Hebrides in 1784. Mr. Hopkins is now assisted in his business by his son" (Who's Who in Glasgow 1929).

        Razskazy [Stories]

St. Petersburg: Tip. A. M. Kotomina i Ko, 1882. First Edition. Octavo. Quarter marbled calf with marbled-paper boards; spine on five raised bands; gilt title to spine in Cyrillic; original front wrapper bound in (!); [5], 4-216, [1] pp. About very good; boards and hinges rubbed; front hinge a bit weak; front wrapper and title page lightly soiled; text clean save for one or two smudges. The first printing in book form of Vsevolod Garshin's famous stories, which originally appeared in Saltykov- Shchedrin's Otechestvennye zapiski (Notes of the Fatherland) and other so-called thick journals of the late nineteenth-century. This publication was prepared by Garshin himself, who was said to have distributed the printed books to Petersburg shops himself. It contains some of the most iconic stories, which established his innovative, unique approach to Russian realism: "Chetyre dnia," "Proisshestvie," "Trus," "Vstrecha," "Khudozhniki," "Noch'," "Attalea princeps," and "To, chego ne bylo." It's appearance met with the approval of Ivan Turgenev, who treated Garshin as his literary successor. A second volume of stories appeared later in the same year. Both volumes are rare; KVK, OCLC show one copy of the present one, at Giessen University.

'The Orient Liner "Austral" sunk in Sydney Harbour' [pencil title to verso]

Sydney, 1882. Albumen silver print, 150 x 200mm, pencil description to verso; a little creased and minor tear to lower margin, but very good. Remarkable photo showing the S.S. Austral after it foundered in Sydney Harbour while coaling off Kirribilli in November 1882. The striking scene shows the vessel sunk past the gunwales and listing heavily to starboard, the masts and funnels depicted starkly against the fog and calm sea. Around the wreck various smaller boats are in attendance; the perspective of the image looks south-east past Fort Denison towards Clark Island and Double Bay. The wreck provoked astonishment and curiosity among Sydney-siders, becoming a popular tourist attraction for the ferries of the harbour for some three months. A piece in the Sydney Morning Herald pondered the strangeness of a ship wrecking in such sheltered conditions, commenting that the 'Austral has not even the excuse of the sudden gust, she sank as by some evil influence, how far assisted by man's neglect remains to be shown.' The Austral was ultimately refloated and resumed service on the Although the present image appears to be unrecorded, it is similar to a photograph held by the National Library taken by Sydney photographer John Paine. Kent-born Paine, who won awards at the Sydney and Calcutta International Exhibitions, was a well established commercial and private photographer at the time working out of a studio in Waterloo.

Map of the Republic of Mexico shewing the Lines of the Mexican Railway Co. L.d & indicating approximately the Various Railway Projects for which Concessions have been recently granted by the Federal Government.

1882 - London: Mexican Railway Company Limited, 1882. Lithographic map, dissected and laid on linen as issued, total 680 x 950mm. With covers and label of James Wyld. A map reflecting the economic boom in Mexico during the 'Porfiriato', the dictatorship of Porfirio Díaz between 1876-1911. Although Mexico was nominally a democracy, Diaz rigged elections to stay in power, but his policies led to stability and made Mexico more attractive to foreign investors. Diaz gave generous concessions for railway development, with impressive results. At the beginning of his rule Mexico had 640 km of railway, most belonging to the British-owned 'Mexican Railway Company', the publishers of this map. Six years later this map lists 38 concessions granted by the government, including the 'Mexican Southern Railway', headed by former US President Ulysses S. Grant (which went bankrupt in 1884). By 1910 Mexico had nearly 25,000 km of track.

        Autograph musical quotation signed

4 measures encompassing the range of the violin, marked "Etendue du Violon," notated on a large oblong octavo leaf (167 x 227 mm.). Inscribed "A mon collègue [!] et bon ami A. Fischer... Camillo Sivori Paris 17 Février 1882." Very slightly foxed; slight abrasion to right-hand edge. . Sivori "studied violin with Paganini's former teacher Giacomo Costa... Between October 1822 and May 1823 Paganini was in Genoa, and, favourably struck by the young violinist, decided to give him lessons... Paganini regarded Sivori as the only pupil for whose formation he was responsible ('the only person who can call himself my pupil', he wrote in 1828)... His virtuoso repertory was based principally on his own compositions and those of Paganini, but unlike his teacher, Sivori also became an exceptional performer of Classical and early Romantic chamber music... A stylish composer, who displayed a lovely melodic vein, Sivori composed around 60 pieces." Flavio Menardi Noguera in Grove online

        Atala, Rene, Le Dernier Abencerage

Paris - A. Quantin, 1882. Paris - A. Quantin, 1882 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Leatherbound volume with gilt title to the spine, marble paper covered boards, and 18 illustrations. Franois-Ren, vicomte de Chateaubriand (September 4, 1768 July 4, 1848) was a French writer, politician and diplomat. He is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. Chateaubriand was educated in Dol, Rennes and Dinan. For a time he could not make up his mind whether he wanted to be a naval officer or a priest, but at the age of seventeen, he decided on a military career and gained a commission as a second lieutenant in the French Army based at Navarre. Within two years, he had been promoted to the rank of captain. He visited Paris in 1788 where he made the acquaintance of Jean-Franois de La Harpe, Andr Chnier, Louis-Marcelin de Fontanes and other leading writers of the time. When the French Revolution broke out, Chateaubriand was initially sympathetic, but as events in Paris became more violent he decided to journey to North America in 1791. This experience would provide the setting for his exotic novels Les Natchez (written between 1793 and 1799 but published only in 1826), Atala (1801) and Ren (1802). His vivid, captivating descriptions of nature in the sparsely settled American Deep South were written in a style that was very innovative for the time and spearheaded what would later become the Romantic movement in France. Ren is a short novella by Franois-Ren de Chateaubriand, which first appeared in 1802. The work had an immense impact on early Romanticism, comparable to that of Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther. Like the German novel, it deals with a sensitive and passionate young man who finds himself at odds with contemporary society. Ren was first published as part of Chateaubriand's Gnie du christianisme along with another novella, Atala, although it was in fact an excerpt from a long prose epic the author had composed between 1793 and 1799 called Les Natchez, which would not be made public until 1826. Ren enjoyed such immediate popularity that it was republished separately in 1805 along with Atala. This volume bears the bookplate of The Right Hon. Sir Ronald Charles Lindsay. He served as British Ambassador to the United States of America from 1929 to 1939. He was the son of Sir James Lindsay (26th Earl of Crawford) and Emily Lindsay. In 1909 he married Martha Cameron. Martha was the daughter of James Donald Cameron and Elizabeth Sherman Cameron. Martha died in 1918. In 1924 he married Elizabeth Sherman Hoyt , daughter of Colgate Hoyt. Condition: The binding is tight and firm with both covers and all pages attached. There is some mild wear to the extremities including slight rubbing to the boards. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional handling mark. There is a small tear to the foldout facsimile at the bottom left hand corner, but this does not affect the text. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown. Overall the volume is in very good condition..
