        Marion Fay

London: Chapman and Hall, 1882. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. An about Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of this Trollope triple decker in the publisher's original cloth, decorated in black (spine ends a bit worn, evidence of prior lending library label to each volume's front board, common soiling, lending library label to each volume's front pastedown, label number neatly written on each volume's spine, page blocks settled, Volume III's hinges cracked); a very good copy of a Trollope title generally found quite faded and worn when found in the scarce original cloth, with copies tending to have been so worn as to have required rebinding. The novel centers around the Marquis of Kingsbury and his second wife who labors to see that the children from the Marquis's first marriage do not marry, so that her own will inherit his title and wealth. Then, of course, onto the scene then comes Marion Fay, a girl from the town who falls in love with the Marquis's son. An about Very Good copy of a Trollope triple decker that often turns up rebound.

        Memoire sur les Races d'Océanie

Paris: Imprimerie Nationale, 1882. Octavo, diagrams and tables throughout the text, folding table; a fine copy elegantly bound in modern three-quarter morocco with raised bands. Fine copy of a scarce anthropological study carried out by French maritime medical officer Cauvin, during his visit to Australia and New Guinea in the early 1880s.Cauvin's work followed that of Labillardiére in 1800, Huxley in 1870 and Topinard in 1872, in the study of cultural and physical attributes of the Tasmanian and mainland Aborigines, the Papuans and the Polynesians, in an attempt to determine their origins. This work was issued as an offprint from the Archives des Missions Scientifiques et Litteraires; unlike the copies in the Mitchell Library and National Library of Australia, this is the separately paginated issue.

The Holy Bible [1882 George V. Jones specially bound Pictorial Family Bible and Brass Lectern]

Boston, Mass.: George V. Jones, No. 123 Pearl St.. [1882]. Large thick quarto. Various paginations. Containing the Old and New Testaments (with both versions of the New Testament); the Apocrypha; a complete Concordance; 100,000 marginal references, etc. Illustrated with color lithographic plates and maps, steel-engraved and wood-engraved plates, and wood-engraved illustrations throughout the text. Bound in at the back are two double-sided color lithographic cardboard sleeves with mounting slots to accommodate 16 family portraits. A rare and beautifully preserved pictorial family bible bound in elaborate gilt-decorated paneled morocco with metal clasps.A bright, fine copy housed in the publisher's very good original cardboard box with a printed paper label. A binder's ticket on the back pastedown further identifies this edition as having been both published and bound by: "Geo. V. Jones & Co., booksellers and bookbinders" in Boston. The binding is signed with a small copyright date in gold ("copyrighted 1881"), and an advertisement printed on the verso of a leaf at the front makes it known that the Bible won the highest prize at an International Exposition in December, 1881: "... the designs and workmanship being of the very best." Laid-in is an eight-page publisher's catalog: "Announcement for 1883," so we think it safe to attribute a date of 1882 to this volume. The Bible is also remarkable for its many fine engraved and lithographic plates printed in multiple colors. All are bright, pristine impressions of high artistic accomplishment, printed on high quality thick paper sheets, with pristine tissue guards. The steel engravings are printed on uncoated sheets, and the wood-engraved plates are printed on lightly coated sheets. The volume is accompanied by an equally fine brass lectern featuring open arabesque metal work on its four rectangular sides, the Last Supper depicted in relief on the front, and an adjustable top piece pierced with an open leaf pattern surrounding the IHS monogram. A brass plate on the back is engraved: "Darovala M.V.B.B., A.D. 1925." OCLC locates only one copy of this Bible at the American Antiquarian Society, which they acquired from the Mark Craig Collection of signed Bookbindings. .

Fish and Fisheries of New South Wales

Sydney: Thomas Richards, 1882. Large octavo, frontispiece and 45 plates, illustrated, a little browned; very good copy in half black morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt, very gently rubbed. A very good copy of this seminal work on the fishes of New South Wales.Tenison-Woods (1832-1889), was a Catholic priest, educationist and scientist. He sailed for Van Diemen's Land in 1854, but after a disagreement with a Bishop, soon relocated to Adelaide, where he would help Mother Mary MacKillop found the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart at Penola in 1866. The next year, he accepted the positions of director-general of Catholic schools and secretary and chaplain to Bishop Sheil. At the same time, he was an accurate observer of the physical world and made original contributions to Australian geology, palaeontology and zoology. He travelled widely and published over 150 papers in the journals and transactions of Australian learned societies and overseas periodicals. In this work he made a comprehensive survey of the fishes of the Colony, and it was designed to make available a popular account of the findings of the 1880 Royal Commission on the Fisheries of New South Wales. William III of the Netherlands gave Tenison-Woods a gold medal for the book.

Looking up the Toroweap from Vulcans Throne

      - A wonderfully detailed chromolithographic view by William Holmes and Thomas Moran from Clarence Edward Dutton’s sweeping series "Tertiary History of the Grand Cañon District" published by Julius Bien in Washington in 1882. This print measures 20” x 33”. These magnificent, large-scale panoramic views were included in Clarence Edward Dutton’s "Tertiary History of the Grand Cañon District", a publication that has elicited superlatives from every critic, and is certainly worthy of Francis Farquhar's description of it as "one of the greatest if not the greatest of all Grand Canyon books." Originally published in 1882, Dutton’s definitive work was commissioned as a study of the region’s geology and issued by the fledgling U.S. Geological Survey. Today it is admired as much for its stunning views, contributed by noted artists Thomas Moran and William Holmes, as for its scientific merit. Most of the views were the work of Holmes, an artist-cum-geologist who managed to transmute the rocky strata of the site into golden panoramas that continue to startle viewers as no other canyon art ever has. Although photography had been developed forty years before, and many photographers like Timothy O’Sullivan had already been to the Grand Canyon to take pictures, Holmes’s precision in drawing was able to do what the photo technology of the time could not -- cut through the haze and glare to reveal the canyon in perfect focus, with all of its strata together giving a glimpse of its history more revealing than any picture. Holmes’s imagery expressed visually Dutton’s notion that the Grand Canyon was “a great innovation in modern ideas of scenery, and in our conceptions of the grandeur, beauty, and power of nature.” Overall this print is in very good condition with some light foxing/staining and a few very small tears along edges.

. 2 SS. Gr.-8vo. I: "Die Hyazinthe". Drei vierzeilige Strophen. II: "Die Nacht". Sechs vierzeilige Strophen. Etwas unfrisch..

Two on a Tower originally ran as a serial in the Atlantic Monthly between May and December 1882, after the editor Thomas Bailey Aldrich had written Hardy in late September 1881, asking about the possibility of a serial. However, Hardy did not begin work on the story until early 1882 and by 14 July the same year, Sampson Low agreed to publish the book form. Overall, Hardy seems to have found writing Two on a Tower a rushed affair: "The truth is that, though the plan of the story was carefully thought out, the actual writing was lamentably hurried — having been produced month by month, and the MS. despatched to America, where it was printed without my seeing the proofs. It would have been rewritten for the book form if I had not played truant and gone off to Paris" (Letter to Edmund Gosse, 21 January 1883).

      - BKW, 19/15. - Berlin, August Hirschwald, Montag, den 10. April 1882, 4°, pp.221-236, feiner Halbpergamenteinband. First Edition, First Appearance in Print of Koch's epochal paper on which he announced March 24 his discovery of the tubercle bacillus, this paper also contains the first statement of "Koch's postulates". The greatest and best known of all of Robert Koch's labors . For this work, in the face of the teaching of the day that tuberculosis was the result of nutritional disturbances, Koch took his place as the greatest bacteriologist of his day and one of the greatest physicians of all time. By the discovery of the actual cause of tuberculosis, real scientific progress was possible toward controlling this widespread affliction. For his discovery of the bacillus of tuberculosis Robert Koch received the Nobel Prize in 1905.
