        Struggles and Triumphs,

Buffalo: The Courier Company,, 1882. Or, Forty Years' Recollections. Revised, Enlarged, Newly Illustrated and Written up to December 1881. Octavo. Contemporary dark brown half calf, marbled boards, raised bands, red morocco label, compartments richly gilt, marbled edges and endpapers. Steel engraved frontispiece portrait and numerous engraved plates. Extremities lightly rubbed and worn, boards a touch scuffed, inner hinges cracked but holding firm, a few small light stains to margins of text block. An excellent copy. A revised and enlarged edition of the author's second autobiography, originally published in 1869. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf: "To Samuel Bowles [IV] Esq. with the Author's Compliments. P. T. Barnum, Waldemere, Bridgeport Conn, Feb 14th 1882". Bowles (1851?-1915) was the son of Samuel Bowles III, the editor of The Springfield Republican, and he would himself assumed that position following his father's death in 1878. Barnum (1810?-1891) was the archetypal 19th-century American self-made man with an extensive list of professions, including travelling showman, politician, hoaxer, and best-selling author. In his sixties, he began a new and successful career as a circus owner, in which capacity he purchased Jumbo the Elephant (1861?-1885). Barnum's first autobiography, The Life of P.T. Barnum: Written by Himself, was first published in 1855.

        Flowering Cactus Blossom.

Original Watercolor 1882-1890, Britain - A refined and rare original watercolor painted on clay-coated stock. Fine condition. Image size: 13 x 11 cm. Sheet size: 24 x 29.6 cm. With dedication leaf 'Edith Cast Faber from her Mother (a loving memento) painted by Mrs. J.A. Faber about 1882-1890'. Classified as florilegia: ornamental flowers painted for beauty rather than scientific or medicinal appeal, this lovely Flowering Cactus Blossom was evidently painted from nature by an accomplished hand. Although the art of flower painting was a favored, traditional pastime for genteel women of nineteenth century Britain, few works boast the refined sense of composition, color, light and shading as evidenced by the practiced, skillful execution of this still life. To date the works by Mrs. Faber are undocumented however this elegant composition clearly reflects her appreciation for and mature expression of the glories of the garden, the natural world and the still life tradition.

Docketed on reverse including..Presented by Mrs. Madeleine McLelan Smith of Niagara-on-the-Lake - formerly of Kitchener… Archibald Woodbury McLelan, was a Canadian shipbuilder and politician, the sixth Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. Archibald McLelan was educated in Great Village and joined his father's shipping and retail business. On his father's death in 1858 he succeeded him in the House of Assembly. Strongly opposed to confederation with Canada, McLelan was elected as the first federal member of parliament for Colchester as an Anti-Confederate. He reconciled himself to Confederation and was summoned to the Canadian Senate in 1869 where he sat as a Liberal-Conservative. He resigned from the Upper House to run again for the Canadian House of Commons in the 1881 federal election and was returned to parliament as a Conservative. President of the Privy Council (1881, May 20 - 1882 July 9), Minister of Marine and Fisheries (1882 July 10 - 1885 December 9). McLelan served from 10 December 1885-26 January 1887 as the Minister of Finance and Receiver General as well as Postmaster General (1887 January 27 - 1888 July 9.) in the second administration of Sir John A. Macdonald. He was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia, July 10, 1888 and died in Halifax at the age of 65 while serving in this capacity.John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell, Marquess of Lorne and later 9th Duke of Argyll, married Queen Victoria's fourth daughter Louise at Windsor in 1871. The marriage was not a success, partly due to the fact that the groom was homosexual. After the turbulent early years of their marriage, the couple eventually reached a modus vivendi. While maintaining a façade of bourgeois respectability, Louise found fulfilment as a painter and sculptor, Lorne as a writer of books on travel. From 1878 to 1883, he was Governor-General of Canada, an appointment that was one of Disraeli's early experiments in imperial statecraft. Disraeli believed a royal princess resident in Canada would strengthen the links between crown and dominion. Ironically, Louise was a disaster - she hated colonial society and constantly invented excuses to absent herself. Lorne, however, performed creditably. He died at Kent House on the Isle of Wight in 1914.Joseph-Alfred Mousseau was a French Canadian lawyer, journalist, writer, politician, and judge. He was was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1874 In 1880, he was elevated to the Cabinet of Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald, serving first as president of the Queen's Privy Council of Canada, and then as Secretary of State for Canada. Mousseau left federal politics to become the sixth Premier of the province of Quebec from July 31, 1882, until his resignation on January 22, 1884, after being appointed as a judge. He died in Montreal in 1886.Sir Alexander Campbell, PC, KCMG, QC (March 9, 1822 - May 24, 1892) was an English-born, Canadian statesman and politician, and a father of Canadian Confederation. He studied law and was called to the bar in 1843. He became a partner in John A. Macdonald's law office. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1858 and 1864, and served as the last Commissioner of Crown Lands 30 March 1864 - 30 June 1867. He attended the Quebec City Conference in 1864, and at Confederation was appointed to the Canadian Senate. He later held a number of ministerial posts in the Cabinet of Sir John A. Macdonald and was the sixth Lieutenant Governor of Ontario from 1887 to 1892. He died in office in Toronto in 1892, and was buried at Cataraqui Cemetery in Kingston, Ontario.

First edition. In a future England, as dominated by women as Victorian England was by men, the men finally revolt. "An amusing, well-written book ... a pleasant relief from the long-winded novels that Besant wrote with James Rice. The question has arisen whether THE REVOLT OF MAN is not a satire against Victorian male chauvinism, but the indications are that Besant meant the work literally." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 191. The novel was first published anonymously and languished until noticed by the SATURDAY REVIEW, after which the book quickly went through additional printings totaling 9000 copies. September 11, 1896) was an American scholar, educator, and folklorist, best known today for his collection of folk songs known as the Child Ballads. Child was Boylston professor of rhetoric and oratory at Harvard University, where he produced influential editions of English poetry. In 1876 he was named Harvard's first Professor of English, a position which allowed him to focus on academic research. It was during this time that he began work on the Child Ballads.  The Child Ballads were published in five volumes between 1882 and 1898. They are a major contribution to the study of English-language folk music. The Child Ballads are a collection of 305 traditional ballads from England and Scotland and their American variants, collected by Francis James Child during the second half of the 19th century. Their lyrics and Child's studies of them were published as The English and Scottish Popular Ballads, a work of 2,500 pages. The tunes of most of the ballads were collected and published by Bertrand Harris Bronson in and around the 1960s.The ballads vary in age; for instance, the manuscript of "Judas" dates to the thirteenth century and a version of "A Gest of Robyn Hode" was printed in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. The majority of the ballads, however, date to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Although some probably have very ancient influences, only a handful can be definitively traced to before 1600. Moreover, few of the tunes collected are as old as the words. Nevertheless, Child's collection was far more comprehensive than any previous collection of ballads in English.Child Ballads are generally heavier and darker than is usual for ballads. Some of the topics and other features characteristic enough of Child Ballads to be considered Child Ballad motifs are these: romance, enchantment, devotion, determination, obsession, jealousy, forbidden love, insanity, hallucination, uncertainty of one's sanity, the ease with which the truth can be suppressed temporarily, supernatural experiences, supernatural deeds, half-human creatures, teenagers, family strife, the boldness of outlaws, abuse of authority, betting, lust, death, karma, punishment, sin, morality, vanity, folly, dignity, nobility, honor, loyalty, dishonor, riddles, historical events, omens, fate, trust, shock, deception, disguise, treachery, disappointment, revenge, violence, murder, cruelty, combat, courage, escape, exile, rescue, forgiveness, being tested, human weaknesses, and folk heroes.Condition:Conditions are Very Good/Excellent.  Small wear to edges, one upper front corner had a ding/missing a little leather/colored over, few other small marks to leather, small blemish on a couple pages, pages/hinges/text blocks are very good/excellent for over 125 years old!!!

Crónica de la Orden de N. Seráfico P. S. Francisco, Provincia de San Pedro y San Pablo de Mechoacán en la Nueva España

xv+488 pages with appendices. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5") bound in quarter leather with gilt lettering to spine in stiff boards. From the library of Professor George M Foster. Second edition.Alonso de la Rea was born in Queretaro in 1610. He wrote his Cronica in 1637-1639, providing data on Michoacán and Jalisco. For many matters he leaned heavily on Torquemada, who in turn had copied them from Mendieta. Ricard, quoting an 18th century opinion, mentions that Rea lacked interest in chronology to an excessive degree. His work was however, an official and methodical chronicle of the province, preserving considerable detail about it. Rea's Cronica ... 1639 was first published in 1643, and is now a bibliographical rarity. The volume is divided into three books, totaling 92 chapter. Book 1 describes the region, products, people, their dealings with Aztecs, their general traits, religious rites, the last native emperors, and coming of the Spaniards. This is followed by arrival of the Franciscan missionaries, with biographies of some of these pioneer friars. Book 2 begins with the division of the province between Michoacán and Jalisco (1606) and contains numerous biographies of the members of that order. Book 3 is also a series of lives and an account of the Custodio del Rio Verde. The second edition was published in Mexico (1882). It includes additional relevant documents in three appendices. At the end of the text there is a table of contents, but no index.George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Foster's stamp to title. Corners bumped, edge wear to boards, rubbing to paper boards else a very good copy.
