VERNE, Jules
Paris : Bibliotheque d’education et de recreation, 1881. First edition. 1881 1ed Jules Verne Michel Strogoff Adventure Novel Russia French Illustrated Jules Verne’s adventure novels are some of the most popular and famous works of literature of all time. ‘Michael Strogoff,’ the fourteenth work in the ‘Extraordinary Voyages’ series, is one of Verne’s best-written books, and some critics even say there is no better Verne novel. However, it never garnered the popularity that other classics like ’20,000 Leagues’ or ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ had. ‘Michael Strogoff’ is an adventure novel that uncovers scientific phenomenon rather than science fiction. This rare French edition is charmingly illustrated and was published by Hetzel and features the two elephants at the top corners of the front cover, indicative of the earliest Verne editions. Item number: #2714 Price: $499 VERNE, Jules Michel Strogoff : Moscou-Irkoutsk. Paris : Bibliotheque d’education et de recreation, 1881. First edition. Harrison, Constance Cary.
8vo. [New York]: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1881. 8vo., xii, 242 pp., five chromolithographic plates and numerous uncolored engravings in the text. Original green cloth, stamped in burgundy ink, gilt title to upper board, some fraying to the edges of the boards; very good. Contemporary bookseller's label and later ownership signature on front pastedown. First edition. Detailed instructions and ideas for decorative projects in the home, ranging from embroidery and vase painting, to treatments of walls, windows and furniture. Two of the plates depict room designs by Louis Comfort Tiffany, and the leaf following the title-page reprints part of an address by William Morris. The chromolithographs are interesting from a technical perspective, appearing to take advantage of the color subtleties made possible by stippling, and by the crosshatching technique more commonly found in chromoxylography. Bassot, Jean Antonin Leon
1881. Bassot, J. A. Léon (1841-1917). Archive consisting of 127 letters, telegrams, etc. to his wife and other family members, many in postmarked covers; also 38 photographs including large bound folding photograph of the participants in the "Dixičme Conférence Générale de l'Association Géodésique Internationale" (Brussels 1892) and miscellaneous travel documents. 1860s - 1917; the letters cover the period 1881-1884. Some dust-soiling, one of the panels of the 1892 photograph detached, some of the photographs faded but on the whole very good. Archive of French geodesist and astronomer General J. A. Léon Bassot, who received the Académie des Science's prestigious Lalande Prize in 1883 for his observations of the transit of Venus that took place on December 6, 1882. Bassot, a geodesist with the French Army, was part of the Académie's expedition to St. Augustine, Florida, led by François Perrier, for the purpose of observing this important astronomical event. Transits of Venus are rare, taking place twice every 120 years or so; the 1882 transit was the last to occur prior to the transits of 2004 and 2012. Observations of the 1882 event, made by astronomers throughout the world, were used to determine the solar parallax and calculate the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Included in Bassot's archive are 27 letters and other pieces of correspondence written during the 1882 expedition, describing in detail the particulars of the journey to St. Augustine (via New York, Niagara Falls and Montreal) and the triumphant conclusion of the expedition's mission. On December 6, just a … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERLESE ANTONIO.-
Padova (Ivi, 1881).
