         An Elementary Treatise on Electricity

Oxford:: Clarendon Press, 1881., 1881. 8vo. xvi, 208, 36, [8] pp. 6 plates, 53 figs. Original dark olive blind- and gilt-stamped cloth. Magee University bookplate, embossed ownership stamp on title. VERY GOOD, BUT REALLY A CHOICE COPY, NEARLY UNUSED. First edition. Maxwell was a "Scottish physicist best known for his formulation of electromagnetic theory. He is regarded by most modern physicists as the scientist of the 19th century who had the greatest influence on 20th-century physics, and he is ranked with Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein for the fundamental nature of his contributions. In 1931, on the 100th anniversary of Maxwell's birth, Einstein described the change in the conception of reality in physics that resulted from Maxwell's work as "the most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton." - Encyclopedia Britannica. In 1871 Maxwell became the first Cavendish professor of physics at Cambridge. He spent the next few years designing and supervising the Cavendish laboratory. This volume, first published 2 years after Maxwell's death, consists mostly of a manuscript he had been composing before his death based on lectures given at the laboratory. It also contains complementary articles selected from Maxwell's Electricity and Magnetism. Bakken p.256; Wheeler Gift 2243.

         Lejonpar.

Kolteckning.

Autograph Letter Signed ("Theodore Roosevelt"), to Harriet Douglas Robinson ("Dear Missy"), congratulating her on her engagement to Henry Bazeley Wolryche-Whitmore

New York, 1881. 4 pp. pen and ink on bifolium, with original envelope addressed in Roosevelt's hand, stamp torn off with some loss, Basel and New York franking stamps. 8 x 5 inches. Creased from prior folding. 4 pp. pen and ink on bifolium, with original envelope addressed in Roosevelt's hand, stamp torn off with some loss, Basel and New York franking stamps. 8 x 5 inches. An early letter from the 22-year-old Theodore Roosevelt to his friend Harriet Douglas Robinson, congratulating her on her engagement to the Englishman Henry Bazeley Wolryche-Whitmore. Robinson was the granddaughter of Betsy Mary Douglas and James Monroe, nephew of the President of the same name. Her mother Fanny Monroe married Douglas Robinson, a distant cousin. Harriet's brother Douglas Robinson, married Roosevelt's sister Corinne in 1882. The letter reads, in part: "I must confess that I was perfectly dumbfounded - though intensely delighted - at the news. Of course I could see that he was very much in love, and I rather thought it would be an engagement *some* time ... I am too glad that we had all of us already grown to like him so much: I don't think we could have trusted our Missy in a total stranger's hands ... whenever we go to England you will be, I am afraid, bored by our presence; and whenever you come over [the Atlantic] it will not only be to see Mr. & Mrs. Robinson Jr but Mr. & Mrs. Roosevelt Jr ..." A rare, early letter, predating Roosevelt's election to the New York State Assembly in November 1881. ABPC records only two letters sold at auction dated earlier than the present letter.

Three photographs (each approximately 160 x 120 mm or the reverse) of Anna Pavlova, all inscribed and signed in 1929 to Mimi Mattin

The photographs are mounted together, behind glass and recently reinserted in the original frame; apart from some silvering-out around the margins, the entire package (external dimensions 295 x 650 mm) is in excellent condition. All three portraits have '"Ross" Verlag' in the negative. Two of them are credited to 'd'Ora, Paris' (Dora Philippine Kallmus, 1881-1963); one is definitely 'Anna Pavlova, in costume for the solo "Christmas", before 1929' (from online sources), and the other is almost certainly from the same sitting. The third one carries the credit 'Portrait by Lafayette, London'; taken in August 1927, it depicts Pavlova with Jack the swan draped around her neck. The recipient, Mimi Mattin, was a 'Life Member of the Adelaide Repertory Theatre Society, Actor, Costume Designer, Director, Producer, Costume Co-ordinator, Costume Maker, Wardrobe Mistress, Coordinator' who is mentioned in 122 events in the AusStage database.

Zu I-V: Fünf Arbeiten über den Milzbrand-Erreger und seine Bekämpfung, jeweils in erster Ausgabe. - "In soil on a side in which anthrax cadavera had been buried twelve years previosly, Pasteur, Chamberland, and Roux demonstrated anthrax spores by inoculation into guinea-pigs. He found that anthrax will not grow above 45°C. but yielded abundant growths at 42-43°C. At the latter temperatures no spores were formed. The cultur had indeed become asporogenous, and in a month had ceased to grow. When a virulent anthrax culture in broth was kept at 42-43°C for eight days it had lost a considerable part of its virulence and was innocuous when injected into guinea-pigs, rabbits, or sheep. This was the method which was suggested by Pasteur, Chamberland, and Roux as an anthrax prophylactic or vaccine, and to demonstrate its value and emphasize its importance to farmers a large experiment was undertaken by Pasteur. The experiment consisted in the inoculation. of 24 sheep, 1 goat, and 6 cows with 5 drops of a living attenuated culture on anthrax bacillus. The result was soon apparent. All the vaccinated sheep were well. Pasteur's triumph was complete. The discovery of the anthrax vaccine constituted, he said 'un progrès sensible sur le vaccin jennérien' (in the last paper)" (Bulloch, The History of Bacteriology S. 244f). - Garrison-Morton 5169. - Zu VI: Erste Ausgabe. - "This Paper marks the beginning of Pasteur's studies on rabies.          The Autobiography of Mark Rutherford, Dissenting Minister. Edited by his friend, Reuben Shapcott

London - Trubner & Co. 1881 - A scarce first edition of this fictitous autobiography criticising the state of religion in Victorian England. A rare survival in the original publisher's binding. In 1881 The Autobiography of Mark Rutherford, fictitiously edited by his friend Reuben Shapcott, appeared: White's first book at the age of fifty. Mark Rutherford's Deliverance followed in 1885, also edited by Reuben Shapcott. Behind this double pseudonymous hedgewhich remained in place for all Hale White's fictional outingshe carefully spilt the beans about the chapel life and the narrow dissenting pietisms of his youth, and vented his satirical fury over what he perceived as the decline of the old nonconformist radicalisms into modern shallowness and hypocrisy -ODNB. William Hale White, 1831-1913, was an English writer and civil servant. Condition: In the original publisher's binding. Externally, a little bumped, with some darkening and marks. Thejoints are starting, with the paper split. Internally, the textblock is split in several places, with pages 65-80 only partially attached, and several gatherings becoming loose. There are occasional spots and marks. Overall: GOOD ONLY. A rare survival and very original. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Imprimérie des Sciences Mathématiques 1881; 1882, Rome - First edition, the rare offprint issues, of the most original mathematical work of the fifteenth century, indeed the most important since Fibonacci?s Liber Abaci almost three centuries earlier (a work which was also not published until the nineteenth century). Composed in 1484, but published here for the first time, this first French work on algebra introduced several groundbreaking innovations into European mathematics, notably the use of exponents to denote powers of a number and the use of negative numbers in the solution of equations. The first part of Le Triparty concerns the arithmetic operations on numbers, including an explanation of the Hindu-Arabic numerals. Chuquet gave a ?règle des nombres moyens? according to which a fraction could be found between any two given fractions by taking the sum of their numerators and dividing by the sum of their denominators. This rule could be used to find the solution of any problem soluble in rational numbers, once an upper and a lower bound for the solution had been found. The last, and most important part, concerns the ?règle des premiers?, which is nothing less than what we would call ?algebra?, ?premier? being Chuquet?s name for the unknown. He also had specific names for the square, cube and fourth power of the unknown, but for higher powers he invented an exponential notation of great significance. In particular, it laid bare the laws of exponents, which played a crucial role in the subsequent invention of logarithms. Also in this part, Chuquet studied the solution of equations, making use for the first time of isolated negative numbers (and on one occasion of the number zero). Problèmes numériques contains Chuquet?s statement and answers to 156 problems solved using the methods of Le Triparty. ?Many of these problems have a long history going back at least as far as the Greek Anthology reputedly collected by Metrodorus some one thousand years earlier. In Chuquet they are solved by various methods, including the ?rule of three? and the ?rule of one and two positions?, but the significant part of the section on problems is where Chuquet applies his ?rule of first terms,? that is, his algebra? (Flegg et al, p. 25). These works are offprints from the Bullettino di bibliografa e di storia delle scienze matematiche e fisiche, tomo XIII & XIV. OCLC lists Harvard only in US for Le Triparty, no copies of the Problèmes numériques. ABPC/RBH lists one copy of Le Triparty (Bloomsbury Auctions, 18 July 2014, lot 445, £1240) and none of Problèmes numériques.Provenance: Problèmes numériques signed and inscribed by Marre on upper wrapper to ?Monsieur Ferdinand Denis.? Jean-Ferdinand Denis (1798-1890), a historian specializing in Brazil, was director of the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève (Paris) from 1865 to 1885.?The ?Triparty? is a treatise on algebra, although the word appears nowhere in the manuscript. This algebra deals only with numbers, but in a very broad sense of the term. The first part concerns rational numbers. Chuquet?s originality in his rules for decimal numeration, both spoken and written, is immediately obvious. He introduced the practice of division into groups of six figures and used, besides the already familiar million, the words billion (1012), trillion (1018), quadrillion (1024), etc. ??Chuquet?s study of the rules of three and of simple and double false position, clear but commonplace, served as pretext for a collection of remarkable linear problems, expounded in a chapter entitled ?Seconde partie d?une position.? Here he did not reveal his methods but reserved their exposition for a later part of the work, where he then said that after having solved a problem by the usual methods ? double position or algebra (his ?regle des premiers?) ? one must vary the known numerical quantities and carefully analyze the sequence of computations in order to extract a canon (formula). This analysis generally led him to a correct formula, although at times he was mistaken and gave meth

La Circulation Du Sang A L'état Physiologique Et Dans Les Maladies. (Exemplaire De Pierre Janet)

"This work, based on Marey's earlier Physiologie médicale de la circulation du sang, has the added benefit of nearly twenty years experience, study, and research. Marey again presents a comprehensive study of the circulatory system's physiology and pathology, and, in addition, he places special emphasis on the clinical signs of cardiac health and disease as well as the instrumentation necessary to detect and record their physiological manifestations" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1964).
