Pueblo Laguna, N.M., 1881. Mounted albumen photograph, 33 x 25 cm., on contemporary bristol board. Some dampstaining on mount, small chip in center of photograph (in the empty sky). Withal, a fine image. A fine view of Pueblo Laguna, taken by the important frontier photographer, Jack Hillers, during the Bureau of American Ethnology Expedition of 1880-81. Hillers' work was made famous by Frederick S. Dellenbaugh in his book, CANYON VOYAGE. After learning the art of photography from professionals such as E.O. Beaman and James Fennemore (photographers on the early Powell expeditions), Hillers became the official photographer with the Powell expeditions of 1872-76 and 1878, recording many beautiful images in Arizona and southern Utah. He eventually surpassed his instructors in both technique and artistic sense, and this image, from a New Mexico pueblo, reflects his advancing photographic skill. The image is of the pueblo at some distance, but it is nevertheless clear and sharp. "Jack Hillers emerged as an outstanding practitioner of the wet-plate trade" - Goetzmann. Goetzmann, EXPLORATION AND EMPIRE, pp.560-61. Taft, PHOTOGRAPHY & THE AMERICAN SCENE, pp.288-91.

To Caubul with the Cavalry Brigade.

London: W.H. Allen & Co.,, 1881. A Narrative of Personal Experiences with the Force under General Sir F.S. Roberts, G.C.B. with Map and Illustrations from Sketches by the Author. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to spine, quotation from Henry IV to the front board within double-ruled panel in black with foliate scrolled decoration, repeated in blind on the rear board, pale yellow surface-paper endpapers. Lithographic frontispiece and five other similar plates, folding lithographic map at the rear. A little rubbed, some bubbling on the boards, spine a touch sunned, and crumpled and chipped head and tail, binding cracked between gatherings 8 and 9, but the stitching remains entirely sound, light browning, and scatter of foxing to the text-block, overall very good. Second edition, same year as the first. Uncommon account of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. Mitford "served with the [14th Regt. Bengal Cavalry (Lancers)] throughout the period it was employed in the war, taking part in the advance on and occupation of Kabul, the action of Charasiab, and the operations around Kabul and the Defence of Sherpur in Dec., 1879, and Â… was mentioned in despatches... [he] commanded the Regiment in the first campaign, and for his services received the Brevet of Lt.-Colonel" (Shadbolt The Afghan Campaigns). Mitford provides excellent detail on the campaign, and writes extremely persuasively, for example on the death of Cavagnari; "They received [him] with a salute of nineteen guns, and after a considerable time spent in compliments, and the inevitable feast Â… the British envoy and his followers were handed over to their new escort, and - to death. When I said good-bye to Cavagnari he was evidently in very low spirits, and I feel sure that nothing but the indomitable courage and determination which was so striking a feature in his character enabled him to conquer the foreboding of evil which he acknowledged he felt, in spite of all efforts to shake it off" (author's introduction). Front endpapers with the bookplate and ownership inscription, dated in 1893, of Sir Lewis Michell, Cape Town banker, "close confidant" of Cecil Rhodes, on his death his executor, and in 1910 his first biographer.

Autograph letter signed in full to the music critic Max Schütz

      - On a postal card. Postmarked Prague, January 23, 1881. In German (with translation). Dvorák informs Schütz that he has written to Simrock and goes on to mention three of his compositions: op. 54, the waltzes for piano, composed between December 1st 1879 and January 17th, 1880; op. 55, the Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy songs), composed between February 18th and 23rd, 1880; and op. 57, the Sonata in F major for Violin and pPano, composed between March 3rd and 17th, 1880. "To hear from you that the Zigeunerlieder have met with your favour pleases me greatly. You are going to receive the violin sonata and the two volumes of waltzes for piano solo. More next time!" Slightly browned. In very good condition overall. "With Smetana, Fibich and Janácek [Dvorák] is regarded as one of the great nationalist Czech composers of the 19th century. Long neglected and dismissed by the German-speaking musical world as a naive Czech musician, he is now considered by both Czech and international musicologists Smetana';s true heir. He earned worldwide admiration and prestige for 19th-century Czech music with his symphonies, chamber music, oratorios, songs and, to a lesser extent, his operas." Klaus Döge in Grove onlineOp. 54 "Although Dvorák was an accomplished pianist, writing for the piano was never as important to him as, for example, orchestral or chamber music. His piano works are mainly entertaining dances and character-pieces rather than musically and technically ambitious sonatas, fantasias and études. The eight Waltzes b101 (1879-1880). are reminiscent of Chopin but are considerably more natural-sounding and direct." ibid Op. 55"The song cycle, Gipsy Melodies, was written for and dedicated to an admirer of the composer's songs, Gustav Walter, tenor singer of the Vienna Court Opera. As a compliment to Walter, Dvorák set the German translations especially prepared for him by the poet himself, instead of using Adolf Heyduk's Czech verses. The songs display far more assurance than any Dvorák has written previously.Dvorák's skill in using the voice is much greater than before. The music may not be similar to the gipsy music with which we are most familiar, but it embodies gipsy elements, and is at the same time pure Dvorák." Clapham, pp. 232-33Op. 57The only sonata of Dvorák's to survive, the sonata for violin and piano, op. 57, "marks Dvorák's first success in writing satisfactorily for the piano in a chamber music work. [It] represents Dvorák at his most intimate." ibid, p. 194 Dvorák's correspondent Max Schütz was a music critic for the German-language daily Pester Lloyd, published in Budapest.

Faust Act III. Etching by Paul Renouard from the series entitled Le Nouvel Opéra

[Paris], 1881. Béraldi: Les Graveurs du XIXe Siècle (Paris: 1885-92), XI-188. Faust, an opera in five acts to a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré after Carré';s Faust et Marguerite and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe';s Faust, Part I (in the French translation by Gérard de Nerval), was first performed in Paris at the Théâtre Lyrique on March 15, 1859. "Faust became particularly important to the French musical establishment at the end of the century. A work by a winner of the Prix de Rome that could claim to be thoroughly modern and personal in style at its première, and go on to international stages, was a significant enhancement to the musical prestige of a French operatic culture previously dominated by Meyerbeer and the none-too-easily exportable genre of opéra comique. Its national value was enhanced because, after some initial assessments as ?Wagnerian';, Gounod';s compositional voice in Faust was heard as important in the definition of a ?French'; musical aesthetic." Steven Huebner in Grove Music Online. Renouard (1845-1924) was a noted painter and engraver whose works are held at the Louvre, the Opéra Museum, etc.. 279 x 198 mm. Signed by the artist in pencil at lower left. A very good impression on laid paper. Remnants of hinges to upper corners of verso.

First Edition of the first of Thoreau's "four seasons," edited from his journal by H.G.O. Blake (this is the only one of the four in which Blake is unnamed).         JAPANESE EPISODES.

Boston 1881, Osgood. Brown decorated cloth, 247p., author's. signed & dated presentation copy, to his cousin on fron fly. leaf. V E R Y R A R E. AN EARLY PRIMARY RESOURCE ON SOCIAL & PHYSICAL FEATURES In the preface of this work, the author stats that the "... purpose of this little volume is t represent a few social and physical features of Japan which have seldom been minutely examined by visitors to that agreeable country...But of the inner life of the Japanese, of their domestic relations, their pleasures or the gentler romance of their nature, I have found no accurate record...nor has the singular loveliness of the scenery, the refining charm of which deeply influlences the character fo teh people, been closely or sympathetically observed..." * A fine introduction to the actual nature of this book. In fact, by the chapter headings: Little Fountain of Sakano- shita; To Fujiyama and back; A Japanese statesman at home; A day in the Japanese theater would not really tell use of the essence found in this lovely essay. * The author, was a Bostonian and a journalist. House [1836- 1901) was one of several Westerners, who tried to interpret Meiji Japan. He was also a prominet American Civil War reporter, and later in Japan, was the editor in the 1870s of the Tokio Times. He had a troubled friendship with Mark Twain in the 1880s, and lived out his final years in Tokyo. He was a crusaider for and had great influence on the United States government, in the return of the American portion of the 1864 Shimonoseki indemnity. House exerted undeniable influence in prompting Congress's decision to send back the money, the question of how much effect he had in "correcting" the historical record of the event remains problematic. * He also wrote The Japanese Expedition to Formosa in 1875; THE JAPANESE, OR SHIMONOSEKI INDEMNITY. APPENDIX, ca. 1875; THE SHIMONOSEKI AFFAIR: A CHAPTER OF JAPANESE HISTORY, 1875; and THE TRANSFER OF THE TEMPLES OF ISE an article in Harper's 1900.

Ottimo esemplare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The only Chester A. Arthur Franked Envelope in Existence

[Washington, D.C.], 1881. 5" x 3.25". "Envelope Franked ""C. A. A."" as President in the upper left, 5"" x 3.25"". Addressed by Arthur to ""The Honorable / Edwards Pierrepont / &c &c."" Slight tear at back flap when opened. No postal markings indicating it was most probably hand delivered. Pierrepont has docketed the envelope along the left edge, as was his custom, ""Prest. Arthur / 1881"" in blue crayon pencil -""Prest Arthur"" is barely visible. Stained in blank lower left corner. Fine condition. In 1884, the New York Republican delegation, of which his friend and fellow New Yorker, Grant's former Attorney General Edwards Pierrepont, was a member, had met at Cooper Union and recommended Arthur be renominated for President. At the Republican National Convention held in Chicago, June 3-6, 1884, on the first ballot, President Arthur was second to his former Secretary of State James G. Blaine, 334 1/2 to 278 votes, with 411 needed to be nominated. Blaine was nominated on the fourth ballot, defeating Arthur 541-207.In 1873, ""An act to abolish the franking privilege"" was passed by Congress and signed by President U.S . Grant, the last sitting U.S. President to have the franking privilege. Because Chester A. Arthur was never a Member of Congress, and was Vice President from March-September 1881, he never had the franking privilege. The only reason President Chester A. Arthur signed ""C.A.A."" in the upper right of this envelope in the franking position, must have been as a frank. This is the only franked envelope of Chester A. Arthur extant. No other example as President or in any capacity has ever been offered at auction or exists in the renowned collections of Louis Grunin, Creighton C. Hart, Morton Dean Joyce or Edward Stern. David G. Phillips' American Stampless Cover Catalog, Volume 2 (1987), p. 215, in a listing headed ""Presidents of the United States / Franks from Other Capacities,"" notes ""None."" "

        Poems

David Bogue, London 1881 - First edition of Oscar Wilde's first book of poems, one of 250 copies. By his mid-twenties, Wilde had enjoyed considerable success as a poet: "Ravenna" won Oxford's Newdigate Prize in 1878, and dozens of Wilde's poems had appeared in Irish, English and American periodicals. This first edition of his collected poems, handsomely printed on handmade paper, was published at Wilde's own expense. Highlights include "Requiescat" (an elegy for his sister Isola, who died when they were children), "The Grave of Keats," and "Her Voice": "Sweet, there is nothing left to say / But this, that love is never lost, / Keen winter stabs the breasts of May / Whose crimson roses burst his frost, / Ships tempest-tossed / Will find a harbour in some bay, / And so we may." Wilde was disappointed in the reception of his first book, and turned from poetry to the more profitable genres of fiction and drama, but he always considered himself a poet before all, and declared that he would be remembered as "the infamous St Oscar of Oxford, Poet and Martyr" (Letters, 720). First printing, with first issue title page, misprint "may" for "maid' on page 136, and a panel of publisher's first binding, featuring a gilt plum blossom pattern designed by Wilde, affixed to rear flyleaf. A fine copy of a major literary debut, splendidly bound by Root & Son. Octavo, early twentieth-century full red crushed morocco gilt, boards gilt-ruled with gilt cornerpieces and floral medallions inlaid with green morocco, raised bands, spine compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, red silk ribbon marker. Gilt-embossed rectangular panel of publisher's first binding, measuring 2 by 2.5 inches, affixed to blank flyleaf. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
