Faust Act III. Etching by Paul Renouard from the series entitled Le Nouvel Opéra

[Paris], 1881. Béraldi: Les Graveurs du XIXe Siècle (Paris: 1885-92), XI-188. Faust, an opera in five acts to a libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré after Carré';s Faust et Marguerite and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe';s Faust, Part I (in the French translation by Gérard de Nerval), was first performed in Paris at the Théâtre Lyrique on March 15, 1859. "Faust became particularly important to the French musical establishment at the end of the century. A work by a winner of the Prix de Rome that could claim to be thoroughly modern and personal in style at its première, and go on to international stages, was a significant enhancement to the musical prestige of a French operatic culture previously dominated by Meyerbeer and the none-too-easily exportable genre of opéra comique. Its national value was enhanced because, after some initial assessments as ?Wagnerian';, Gounod';s compositional voice in Faust was heard as important in the definition of a ?French'; musical aesthetic." Steven Huebner in Grove Music Online. Renouard (1845-1924) was a noted painter and engraver whose works are held at the Louvre, the Opéra Museum, etc.. 279 x 198 mm. Signed by the artist in pencil at lower left. A very good impression on laid paper. Remnants of hinges to upper corners of verso.

1881. Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1881. Original dark green cloth with facsimile signature in gilt, beveled. First Edition of the first of Thoreau's "four seasons," edited from his journal by H.G.O. Blake (this is the only one of the four in which Blake is unnamed). The other three seasons would be published over the next eleven years (curiously not quite in order): SUMMER in 1884, WINTER in 1888, and AUTUMN in 1892. The first edition of EARLY SPRING consisted of only 1018 copies -- fewer than any of Thoreau's books except his first one, A WEEK ON THE CONCORD AND MERRIMACK RIVERS, which consisted of 1000 copies.~This is an attractive, near-fine copy with some very light cover soil and rubbing. The front flyleaf bears a gift inscription dated March 22, 1881 (within a month of publication) -- as well as a later red ink-stamp. Borst A8.1.a; Blanck 20123.

Boston 1881, Osgood. Brown decorated cloth, 247p., author's. signed & dated presentation copy, to his cousin on fron fly. leaf. V E R Y R A R E. AN EARLY PRIMARY RESOURCE ON SOCIAL & PHYSICAL FEATURES In the preface of this work, the author stats that the "... purpose of this little volume is t represent a few social and physical features of Japan which have seldom been minutely examined by visitors to that agreeable country...But of the inner life of the Japanese, of their domestic relations, their pleasures or the gentler romance of their nature, I have found no accurate record...nor has the singular loveliness of the scenery, the refining charm of which deeply influlences the character fo teh people, been closely or sympathetically observed..." * A fine introduction to the actual nature of this book. In fact, by the chapter headings: Little Fountain of Sakano- shita; To Fujiyama and back; A Japanese statesman at home; A day in the Japanese theater would not really tell use of the essence found in this lovely essay. * The author, was a Bostonian and a journalist. House [1836- 1901) was one of several Westerners, who tried to interpret Meiji Japan. He was also a prominet American Civil War reporter, and later in Japan, was the editor in the 1870s of the Tokio Times. He had a troubled friendship with Mark Twain in the 1880s, and lived out his final years in Tokyo. He was a crusaider for and had great influence on the United States government, in the return of the American portion of the 1864 Shimonoseki indemnity. House exerted undeniable influence in prompting Congress's decision to send back the money, the question of how much effect he had in "correcting" the historical record of the event remains problematic. * He also wrote The Japanese Expedition to Formosa in 1875; THE JAPANESE, OR SHIMONOSEKI INDEMNITY. APPENDIX, ca. 1875; THE SHIMONOSEKI AFFAIR: A CHAPTER OF JAPANESE HISTORY, 1875; and THE TRANSFER OF THE TEMPLES OF ISE an article in Harper's 1900. Books Edward House are quite S C A R C E and seldom found for sale. His titles are always RARE ! Images displayed may not always be the exact photo of the copy in stock for sale at any given time.

Ottimo esemplare. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The only Chester A. Arthur Franked Envelope in Existence

[Washington, D.C.], 1881. 5" x 3.25". "Envelope Franked ""C. A. A."" as President in the upper left, 5"" x 3.25"". Addressed by Arthur to ""The Honorable / Edwards Pierrepont / &c &c."" Slight tear at back flap when opened. No postal markings indicating it was most probably hand delivered. Pierrepont has docketed the envelope along the left edge, as was his custom, ""Prest. Arthur / 1881"" in blue crayon pencil -""Prest Arthur"" is barely visible. Stained in blank lower left corner. Fine condition. In 1884, the New York Republican delegation, of which his friend and fellow New Yorker, Grant's former Attorney General Edwards Pierrepont, was a member, had met at Cooper Union and recommended Arthur be renominated for President. At the Republican National Convention held in Chicago, June 3-6, 1884, on the first ballot, President Arthur was second to his former Secretary of State James G. Blaine, 334 1/2 to 278 votes, with 411 needed to be nominated. Blaine was nominated on the fourth ballot, defeating Arthur 541-207.In 1873, ""An act to abolish the franking privilege"" was passed by Congress and signed by President U.S . Grant, the last sitting U.S. President to have the franking privilege. Because Chester A. Arthur was never a Member of Congress, and was Vice President from March-September 1881, he never had the franking privilege. The only reason President Chester A. Arthur signed ""C.A.A."" in the upper right of this envelope in the franking position, must have been as a frank. This is the only franked envelope of Chester A. Arthur extant. No other example as President or in any capacity has ever been offered at auction or exists in the renowned collections of Louis Grunin, Creighton C. Hart, Morton Dean Joyce or Edward Stern. David G. Phillips' American Stampless Cover Catalog, Volume 2 (1987), p. 215, in a listing headed ""Presidents of the United States / Franks from Other Capacities,"" notes ""None."" "

David Bogue, London 1881 - First edition of Oscar Wilde's first book of poems, one of 250 copies. By his mid-twenties, Wilde had enjoyed considerable success as a poet: "Ravenna" won Oxford's Newdigate Prize in 1878, and dozens of Wilde's poems had appeared in Irish, English and American periodicals. This first edition of his collected poems, handsomely printed on handmade paper, was published at Wilde's own expense. Highlights include "Requiescat" (an elegy for his sister Isola, who died when they were children), "The Grave of Keats," and "Her Voice": "Sweet, there is nothing left to say / But this, that love is never lost, / Keen winter stabs the breasts of May / Whose crimson roses burst his frost, / Ships tempest-tossed / Will find a harbour in some bay, / And so we may." Wilde was disappointed in the reception of his first book, and turned from poetry to the more profitable genres of fiction and drama, but he always considered himself a poet before all, and declared that he would be remembered as "the infamous St Oscar of Oxford, Poet and Martyr" (Letters, 720). First printing, with first issue title page, misprint "may" for "maid' on page 136, and a panel of publisher's first binding, featuring a gilt plum blossom pattern designed by Wilde, affixed to rear flyleaf. A fine copy of a major literary debut, splendidly bound by Root & Son. Octavo, early twentieth-century full red crushed morocco gilt, boards gilt-ruled with gilt cornerpieces and floral medallions inlaid with green morocco, raised bands, spine compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt dentelles, top edge gilt, other edges uncut, red silk ribbon marker. Gilt-embossed rectangular panel of publisher's first binding, measuring 2 by 2.5 inches, affixed to blank flyleaf. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

(Beiliegend: Quellen- u.         Hays County, Texas. Manuscript Notarial Ledger

Kyle, Texas, 1881-1885. Very good antiquarian condition. Folio (16" x 10.5"). 27 double-pages (i.e. 54 pp.) of manuscript entries. Bound in original leather-backed marbled boards with tabbed alphabetical index in front; cover worn with spine partly perished, mild toning, scattered minor staining, last few leaves damp stained, etc., generally clean internally. HIGHLY INTERESTING 19TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT LEDGER FROM KYLE, TEXAS (HAYS COUNTY). This historically important early volume dates from 1881-1885 and was kept by notary public Edwin Atwood Vaughan (aka E. A. Vaughan) of Kyle, Texas. In addition to being a notary public, records indicate Vaughan was also editor of the Hays County News newspaper and a cattleman who bred Jersey cattle. Vaughan's notary activities including mortgages, warranter deeds, executor's deeds, trust deeds, transfers, powers of attorney, bills of sale, bonds, quit claims, and liens. Majority of Vaughan's clients were personally known to him and resided in Kyle, however various other towns in Hays County and elsewhere in Texas can also be found here such as Austin, San Marcos, Lockhart, Texarkana, Palestine, Gonzales, Wimberley, Taylor, etc. Hundreds of names appear throughout, making ledger a treasure trove of local genealogy.         A monumental document in the history of Chinese Americans: President Garfield directs Secretary of State James G. Blaine to affix the U.S. Seal to his "ratification of a treaty relating to Chinese immigration into the U.S. signed at Peking"

Washington, D.C.., May 9, 1881. 8" x 10"". "Rare Partly Printed Document Signed ""James A. Garfield"" as President, 1 page, 8"" x 10"". Washington, D.C., May 9, 1881. Mounting remnants at edge of docketed, otherwise blank integral leaf. Fine condition. To his Secretary of State James G. Blaine. In full, ""I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to the ratification of a treaty relating to Chinese immigration into the U.S. signed at Peking Nov, 17, 1880. dated this day, and signed by me; and for so doing this shall be his warrant.""Background of the ""Chinese Immigration "" TreatyState efforts to restrict immigration ended when the Supreme Court ruled that the regulation of immigration was a federal, not a state, concern. The federal government took some steps to restrict unfavorable immigration with the Page Act of 1875, forbidding the entry of prostitutes and felons. The Burlingame Treaty of 1868 between China and the United States explicitly recognized the right of free migration. The Fifteen Passenger Act of 1879, which required that ships carry no more than fifteen Chinese passengers to the United States at a time, was vetoed by President Rutherford Hayes on the grounds that it violated the treaty. To placate his critics, Hayes sent a commission led by [U.S. Minister] James Angell to China to negotiate a new treaty to on Chinese immigration. On November 17, 1880, the new treaty was signed at Peking … The treaty allowed for the regulation - but not the total exclusion - of Chinese immigration. Laborers who lived in the United States before the treaty was signed and all other Chinese were to be allowed to migrate freely, as before. The Angell Treaty also reaffirmed the 'most favored nation' status of Chinese residing in the United States, originally extended to Chinese in the Burlingame Treaty.Article II of the Treaty: ""Chinese subjects, whether proceeding to the United States as teachers, students, merchants or from curiosity, together with their body and household servants, and Chinese laborers who are now in the United States shall be allowed to go and come of their own free will and accord, and shall be accorded all the rights, privileges, immunities, and exemptions which are accorded to the citizens and subjects of the most favored nation.""President James A. Garfield and Secretary of State James G. BlaineFive days after Garfield signed this authorization to Secretary of State James G. Blaine, on May 14, 1881, lawyer Charles J. Guiteau waited outside the State Department to speak to Blaine. He believed his campaign speeches had contributed to Garfield's November 2 1880, victory and he felt he deserved a diplomatic post . He introduced himself to Blaine. According to ""American Series"" on, Guiteau was ""bluntly told by Secretary of State James Blaine that he has 'no prospect whatever of receiving' the appointment. Blaine adds, 'Never bother me again about the Paris consulship so long as you live.' Four days later, an idea pops into Guiteau's mind as he lays in bed: 'If the President was out of the way every thing would go better.' By June 1, after praying and obsessing about this idea, Guiteau becomes convinced of 'the divinity of the inspiration' and decides that God is telling him to kill the president.""""The New York Times"" reported on July 3, 1881, “President Garfield and Secretary Blaine drove from the Executive Mansion about 9 o'clock yesterday morning , to the depot of the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad where the President was to join others on a trip to New-York and New-England. As he was walking through the passenger rooms, arm in arm with Mr. Blaine, two pistol-shots were fired in quick succession from behind, and the President sank to the floor, bleeding profusely from two wounds. The assassin was instantly seized, and proved to be Charles. J. Guiteau, a half-crazed, pettifogging lawyer, who has been an unsuccessful applicant for office under the Government, and who has led a precarious existence in several of the large cities in the country…” "

Down, Beckenham, Kent, 13. I. 1881. - 8vo. 2 pp. Bound before: Krause, Ernst. Erasmus Darwin. Translated from the German by W. S. Dallas. With a preliminary notice by Charles Darwin. Lodon, John Murray, 1879. 8vo. IV, 216 pp. With a portrait frontispiece and a fullpage illustration. Full calf with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelle, leading edges gilt. With Darwin's dedication pasted to endpaper, Leslie Stephen's autogr. ownership and notes above and below. To the writer and critic Sir Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), whose copy this book is, responding to Sir Leslie's reassurances after having been attacked by the novelist Samuel Butler (1835-1902): "My dear Leslie Stephen. Your note is one of the kindest which I have ever received, & your advice shall be strictly followed. It was very good of you, busy as you are, to take so much trouble for me; but your trouble will not be thrown away, in so far as when in the dead of the night the thought comes across me how I have been treated, I will resolutely try to banish the thoughts, & say to myself that so good a judge as Leslie Stephen thinks nothing of the false accusation. The Litchfields & some of my other children are intensely curious to read your judgment. Believe me / yours ever gratefully / Charles Darwin. / I have written on opposite page my name if you think fit to paste it into the Life of E.D.; but I much wish that you would name one or more of the books, written wholly by myself, which I could treat in the same manner for you." Indeed, the dedication "From Charles Darwin / with kindest regards / Jan. 13th 1881" has been cut out and mounted on the flyleaf, and underneath Sir Leslie has added by way of explanation: "The letter upon the next page refers to a silly attack made upon Darwin by Butler of 'Erewhon' etc. I had given Darwin the obvious advice to take no more notice of the creature, D. having already made a sufficient acknowledgement of a trifling error. For details see 'Academy' of the period. LS. - Darwin afterwards sent me the 'Origin of the Species' & the Voyage of the Beagle." - The physician Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), Charles's grandfather, espoused an early theory of evolution all his own, which he sketched, obliquely, in a question at the end of a long footnote to his popular poem "The Loves of the Plants" (1789). Samuel Butler rejected Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. In his 1879 book "Evolution, Old and New" he accused Darwin of having borrowed heavily from and distorted Buffon, Erasmus Darwin and Lamarck, trying to reinstate these earlier thinkers and with them, the design argument. - Provenance: By descent to Leslie Stephen's daughter, the writer Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), who left it to her husband, the writer Leonard Woolf (1880-1969). Woolf had the book auctioned at Sotheby's a year before his death (sale of Feb. 29/20, 1968, lot 279); acquired by a northern Swedish collector, whose descendants returned it to the trade. Darwin Correspondence Project no. 13012 (regestum only). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
