A Pilgrimage to Nejd, The Cradle of the Arab Race. A Visit to the Court of the Arab Emir, and "Our Persian Campaign

London: John Murray, 1881. Second edition. 2 volumes, 8vo, pp. xxxi, 273; ix, 283, illustrated with engravings, folding map. Publisher's decorated cloth; chipped at spine ends, mild spine slant to both volumes, light foxing throughout; good. Lady Anne Blunt (granddaughter of Lord Byron) and her husband Wilfred traveled extensively in the Near East, often without guides and in Arab dress. They mastered written and spoken Arabic and became enamored of Bedouin culture and Arabian horses, which they bought bred. In 1877-78 they hired horses and camels and traveled through Mesopotamia and Persia, and the following year they explored the Arabian desert. T. The latter journey-described in this work with considerable detail on natural history, social conditions, and politics-was one of the first made by Europeans to northern Arabia. It corrected errors in earlier accounts and became one of the standard texts on the area. Speake I: 112; Robinson p. 6.

        [Kitab-i parisan - Kelliyat Hakim Qa'ani]. [Bombay], n. p., AH 1298 (= 1881 AD).

1881. (4), 48, 395, (2)-24, (3) pp. Contemporary calf. Folio (240 x 340 mm). Second edition of the "Kitab-i parisan" ("Book of Confusion") by Habibollah Farsi Qa'ani (Mirza Habib Qa'ani, 1808-54), "King of Poets" under Shah Qajar (r. 1848-96). "The work encompasses 113 anecdotes and 33 'pand' (precepts or maxims), often interspersed with little poems. Many anecdotes contain rules of conduct and practical advice for life, in others the author treats of everyday events and points out failures of contemporary society, such as hypocritical clerics, pompous judges, corrupt officials, and crooked tradesmen. In his maxims, the author discusses the state and its ruler, who is above all law and moral confines. Notoriously, some anecdotes feature drunkards, vagabonds, pedophiles, and unfaithful wives; others describe in detail sultry scenes of the kind that must have been popular at the Shah's court" (cf. KNLL). - Binding rubbed. Interior partially browned and with tears; several repairs (some with tape). Rare; only 3 copies in OCLC (Edinburgh, Göttingen, Berlin). KNLL XIII, 771.

This is a beautifully produced manuscript presentation book with fine hand illuminated hand painted pages, and finely bound in a full leather binding, the book was presented to William Egerton Garnett-Botfield of Decker Hill Hall near Shifnal Shropshire in 1881 as a token of esteem from his friends on his marriage to Elizabeth Clulow Howard-Mclean of Aston Hall, Shifnal, Shropshire, The folio sized book Book measures 14.5 inches by 12 inches approx., bound in full leather with bevelled edges, elaborately decorated in gilt to upper board, with gilt decoration to both spine and rear board, page edges gilded all-round, gilt decoration to inner board edges, internally features seven finely illuminated pages mounted on thick board, the hand painted illumination work was carried out by Adnitt & Naunton of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, the last two pages bearing the names of well-wishers which include some of the most prominent names of Shropshire dignitaries of the time, the Prime Ministers name Lloyd George has been added in pencil. Apart from some scuffs and surface scratches to the leather, the binding is in good solid condition, internally contents in nice condition. William Egerton Garnett-Botfield was the first born son and heir of the Reverend William Bishton Garnett-Botfield and his wife Sarah Dutton There were six other children in the family besides William Egerton when his father the Reverend William Bishton Garnett inherited the fortune, estate and name of the BOTFIELD family in 1863. Alfred Stanton (September 25, 1850); Walter Dutton (b. June 1, 1854); Charles Ramsay (b. May 7, 1858); Lucy Sophia and Grace Catherine (b. 1853); and Annie Augusta (b. 1857). William Egerton Garnett-Botfield was educated at Christ Church, Oxford. He married Elizabeth Clulow HOWARD-McLEAN, the only child and heir of John Howard McLean of Aston Hall, Salop, on February 24, 1881. Together they had three children---two sons and a daughter: William McLean GARNETT-BOTFIELD, born December 29, 1881, who married twice but left no children or heirs. Alfred Clulow FitzGerald GARNETT-BOTFIELD, born June 16, 1892 was killed during World War I at the age of 23, and was unmarried. Helen Stella Alexandrina GARNETT-BOTFIELD married Frederick Feilden CORBETT-WINDER on January 7, 1919 and had one daughter Riba Clulow CORBETT-WINDER. In the 1906 edition of Bye-Gones, we find the following obituary notice for William Egerton Garnett-Botfield: It is with great regret that we record the death, which took place at his seat, The Hut, Bishop's Castle, last evening week, of Mr. William Egerton Garnett-Botfield, one of the best known and most esteemed of Shropshire gentlemen. Mr. Garnett-Botfield was the eldest son of the late Rev. William Bishton Garnett-Botfield, who assumed the additional surname of Botfield by Royal licence in 1863 on succeeding to the estates of his uncle, Mr. William Botfield, of Decker Hill, Shifnal. Born at Findon, Sussex, on August 16, 1849, he was educated privately and at Christ Church, Oxford. he married in 1881, Elizabeth Clulow, only daughter of the late Mr. John Howard McLean, of Aston, Hall, Shifnal, who, with three children---Mr. W. McLean Garnett- Botfield, Miss Alexandria Garnett-Botfield, and Mr. Clulow Garnett-Botfield---survives him. He was placed on the Commission of the Peace for the county of Salop in 1872, and later became a magistrate for Montgomeryshire also. On the formation of the County Council of Salop he became a councillor for the Bishop's Castle Division, and remained their representative until 1904, when he was raised to the aldermanic bench. He had a long connection with the borough of Bishop's Castle. He was elected councillor in 1885 at the first election under Sir Charles Dilke's Act; alderman in 1889, and six times---1888-9, 1896-97, 1898-99, and 1901-93, he served as Mayor. He was president of the local auxiliary of the Bible Society, the welfare of which he had very much at heart; and he turned a literary bent to good account for the benefit of local societies by reading many informing papers on subjects of general interest. He was president of the Mutal Improvement Society, and of the football Club, and everything that tended to the development of the young life of the neighbourhood received his generous support. He was a member of the Board of Guardians, and one of the managers of the Council Schools, after having served for many years on the School Board. He took a great interest in the Agricultural Society, and served as its president, and the Society owes much of its success to his strenuous support. As a landlord, he was one of the most considerate, and was held in much regard and esteem by all his tenants. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society, and had been president of the Caradoc and Severn Valley Field Club since 1893. His services in this connection, as in all others with which he was identified, were marked by that tact and sweetness which endeared him to all whose privilege it was to know him. He had travelled a good deal, especially in countries round the Eastern Mediterranean, Switzerland and Norway. Mr. Garnett-Botfield was fond of shooting, an ardent angler, and some years ago hunted a pack of beagles. Scientifically, his strong point was geology. He was a keen lover of nature in all her aspects; and found supreme delight in observing the common things of his own pretty country side. An obituary for William Egerton Garnett-Botfield also appeared in the April 7, 1906 edition of the Market Drayton Advertiser. It provides additional details about his life and further support for his benevolent character: We regret to have to announce the decease of Mr. William Egerton Garnett-Botfield, J.P. of Decker Hill, Shifnal, and of The Hut, Bishop's Castle, who died after a short illness, at his last-named residence, on Tuesday last, in his fifty-eighth year. The deceased gentleman took a keen interest in public matters: he was six times elected Mayor of Bishop's Castle, and was a member of the Salop County Council. He was a Liberal in politics. Every philanthropic movement had his sympathy and support. He was married a little over twenty-five years ago to Miss Howard McLean, daughter of Mrs Howard-McLean of Aston Hall, Shifnall; and, on the recent occasion of the silver wedding, the people of Shifnal presented to them a massive silver rose bowl and an address, as a token of the affection and esteem in which they and their respective families were held. The deceased gentleman, who was born on August 16th, 1849, was the eldest son of the Rev. William Bishton Garnett-Botfield, M.A., of Decker Hill; his mother was Sarah, wife [daughter] of William Dutton, Esq. Halewood House, Lancashire. The Rev. W. B. Garnett-Botfield was the eldest son of the Rev. William Garnett of Haughton Hall, Cheshire, and Rector of Church Tilston, who was married to [Elizabeth] Sophia, only daughter and heiress of John Bishton, of Kilsall House, near Shifnall. This Rev. William [Bishton] Garnett, grandfather [father] of Mr. W. E. Garnett-Botfield was authorised by royal license, dated October 30th 1863, in compliance with the last will and testament of Mr. William Botfield, of Decker Hill, to take and henceforth use the name of Botfield, in addition to and after that of Garnett, and to bear the arms of Botfield quarterly with that of Garnett. For many generations the Garnett family was settled in the parishes of Bunbury, Acton, and Nantwich, Cheshire. Mrs. Garnett-Botfield survives the deceased gentleman, and he is succeeded in the ownership of the estates by his son, Mr. McLean Garnett-Botfield, who came of age about twelve months ago. The funeral took place yesterday (Friday) at Bishop's Castle, at four o'clock. [From the Market Drayton Advertiser, April 7, 1906]

Autograph letter signed. Windischgrätz, 26. VII. 1881.

1881. 8 vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. Very early letter to his benefactor, the architect Viktor Preyss, with whose family Wolf had spent happy holidays at the Marienhof near Mayerling the previous year. Due to his momentary financial pressures, Wolf had to spend his 1881 summer holiday with his parents at Windischgrätz, from where he bemoans his current situation in a humourous manner. - In early November, Wolf would take the position of Kapellmeister in Salzburg. - Small tears to folds, otherwise fine.

Autograph letter signed. Down, Beckenham, Kent, 13. I. 1881.

1881. 8vo.. 2 pp. Bound before: Krause, Ernst. Erasmus Darwin. Translated from the German by W. S. Dallas. With a preliminary notice by Charles Darwin. London, John Murray, 1879. 8vo. IV, 216 pp. With a portrait frontispiece and a fullpage illustration. Full calf with marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, gilt inner dentelle, leading edges gilt. With Darwin's dedication pasted to endpaper, Leslie Stephen's autogr. ownership and notes above and below. To the writer and critic Sir Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), whose copy this book is, responding to Sir Leslie's reassurances after having been attacked by the novelist Samuel Butler (1835-1902): "My dear Leslie Stephen. Your note is one of the kindest which I have ever received, & your advice shall be strictly followed. It was very good of you, busy as you are, to take so much trouble for me; but your trouble will not be thrown away, in so far as when in the dead of the night the thought comes across me how I have been treated, I will resolutely try to banish the thoughts, & say to myself that so good a judge as Leslie Stephen thinks nothing of the false accusation. The Litchfields & some of my other children are intensely curious to read your judgment. Believe me / yours ever gratefully / Charles Darwin. / I have written on opposite page my name if you think fit to paste it into the Life of E.D.; but I much wish that you would name one or more of the books, written wholly by myself, which I could treat in the same manner for you." Indeed, the dedication "From Charles Darwin / with kindest regards / Jan. 13th 1881" has been cut out and mounted on the flyleaf, and underneath Sir Leslie has added by way of explanation: "The letter upon the next page refers to a silly attack made upon Darwin by Butler of 'Erewhon' etc. I had given Darwin the obvious advice to take no more notice of the creature, D. having already made a sufficient acknowledgement of a trifling error. For details see 'Academy' of the period. LS. - Darwin afterwards sent me the 'Origin of the Species' & the Voyage of the Beagle." - The physician Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), Charles's grandfather, espoused an early theory of evolution all his own, which he sketched, obliquely, in a question at the end of a long footnote to his popular poem "The Loves of the Plants" (1789). Samuel Butler rejected Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. In his 1879 book "Evolution, Old and New" he accused Darwin of having borrowed heavily from and distorted Buffon, Erasmus Darwin and Lamarck, trying to reinstate these earlier thinkers and with them, the design argument. - Provenance: By descent to Leslie Stephen's daughter, the writer Virginia Woolf (1882-1941), who left it to her husband, the writer Leonard Woolf (1880-1969). Woolf had the book auctioned at Sotheby's a year before his death (sale of Feb. 29/20, 1968, lot 279); acquired by a northern Swedish collector, whose descendants returned it to the trade.

Autograph manuscript unsigned. [Paris, autumn 1881].

1881. 8vo (210 x 133 mm). 1 p. A curious manuscript in the hand of Pasteur with fascinating content as the French chemist begins preparations for a lecture: "Do you know what to us is the charm of your studies? Do you know, if you will allow me to speak thus, what is the enchantment of science? It is that we can provide the proof of our principles. Who can give that, this proof of principles, in politics, religion, even in morals? Who can put into the precision of formulas human passions and their sometimes terrible effects, for example the assassination of a Garfield by a dreadful madman [...]". - No doubt Pasteur wrote the present draft in the autumn of 1881 after President James A. Garfield was shot by assassin Charles J. Guiteau, a rejected and disillusioned Federal office seeker on 2 July 1881. Garfield died on 19 September 1881.

A grammar of the Cree language, as spoken by the Cree Indians of North America.

London: Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge 12mo (161 mm; 6.375"). viii, 238 pp.. 1881 First edition of one of the first Cree grammars in English. Horden, who began his life as an ironworker, received his calling in 1851 and was sent to Canada with only two weeks notice — during which time he was expected to find a wife. He succeeded in finding both a wife and a fruitful career, eventually becoming the first bishop of Moosonee, diocese of Rupert's Land. Horden's approach here is rooted in descriptive grammar and is expressed in terms of classic Latin-based structure. He urges his language-learning students to begin with his grammar, but to "use the living voice of the Indians as much as possible" as their guide (p. vi). Publisher's green cloth with modest decoration and "Cree Grammar" stamped in black; dark grey discoloration (smoke?) to spine and adjoining one inch on each cover. Text block edges darkened, discoloration to endpapers, fly-leaves, and occasionally another page, with a slim crescent of grey to top of title page. Otherwise, occasional foxing only and a good, sound copy.

Sagesse édition originale, 1881, Librairie catholique

Sagesse, imprimé à Paris en 1881 par la librairie Catholique.Un des exemplaires d'auteur racheté par Vannier qui apposa son étiquette sur la couverture. In 8 à grandes marges.
