First edition. Beautifully bound at The Foster Press, Madras, India. Madras is the capital city of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu (Madras, today, is also known as Chennai i). Located at the Coromandel Coast off the Bay of Bengal, it is a major commercial, cultural, economic and education center in South India. It is also known today as the "Cultural Capital of South India"/ There is a tiny contemporary 1881 pastedown in the bottom left corner of the back right endpaper: "Bound at the Foster Press, Madras."Translated into the Telugu Language. Madras; for the Madras Auxiliary Bible Society, 1881. Bound in custom full black calf with gilt presentation stamped to front covers.Unusual translation of the Bible into the Telugu language. Presented in custom binding to Rev. E. Unangst in 1882. Front cover stamped with message in gilt: "To the Rev. E. Unangst, D.D., on His 25th Year in India, From Those For Whom He Has Labored, Guntoor, 1st April 1888." Erias Unangst (1823-1903) was a Doctor of Divinity, Lutheran Minister, born in Easton, Pennsylvania, graduated from Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg. He worked 36 years as a missionary to Guntoor, India. Died in Hollidaysburg, PA. Rev. Unangst was fluent in Greek, Hebrew, and Telugu and worked on a thorough revision of The Holy Bible in Telugu.Erias Unangst, A Gettysburg College Graduate - Ordained and married in 1857, he depart for India with Adam Long. He remained there until 1871, when he returned to the United State briefly. He was awarded an honory doctorate (D.D.) at Wittenberg College in 1878, and remained in India until 1895. Sources clearly indicate that Unangst's thirty five years in India were well spent. He served alongside Adam Long for several years, but when Long left for Europe or passed away, Unangst was left in charge of all four stations in the Telugu region: Guntur, Palnad, Rajahmundry, and Samulcotta.Perhaps the most important work that Erias Unangst completed during his time in India was translation of the New Testament that was thereafter used in the mission field. He also composed various tracts and hymns, which he then translated into Telugu. This type of communication with the natives would certainly have been invaluable to the missionaries, allowing them to convert even greater numbers if Indians. In 1895, Unangst left India for the last time after 35 years of service there. Behind him, he left a legacy that may be considered unrivaled.

Das Erdbeben in Agram am 9. November 1880. [The Earthquake in Zagreb On November 9, 1880.]

[Ivan Standl], [Zagreb] 1881 - Photographic album with 25 original, vintage black and white photographs, mounted on cardboard leaves. Each leaf bears Standl's embossed seal, the images otherwise unlabelled. In original leather binding with gilt ruling at edges. Spine gilt with raised bands. Front panel with ornate metal corner pieces, bimetal title plaque, clasp. Edges gilt. Moire endpapers. Contemporary album with 25 photographic images showing the destruction of the 1880 Zagreb earthquake. A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Zagreb on November 9, 1880. Although only one person was killed, the earthquake barely left any building in the city undamaged. The Department of Physics and Natural Sciences of Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts commissioned Ivan Standl to document the destruction of the catastrophe. Ivan Standl (1832-1897) was a Czech-born pioneer professional photographer in Zagreb, known mostly for his documentary work of the natural and cultural heritage of Croatia as the author of the first Croatian photobook, "Fotografijske slike iz Dalmacije, Hrvatske i Slavonije" (Photographic images from Dalmatia, Croatia and Slavonia; 1870), and for documenting the aftermath of the 1880 Zagreb earthquake. What makes his work unique, is that Standl was focusing on the scientific characteristics of the disaster. With his images, especially those of peripheral urban sites, he demonstrated the force of the earthquake and also showed the direction of the impact, unlike other photographers (Otto Dasch, Hinko Krapek, Gjuro Varga, Hermann Fickert) whose images were to illustrate magazines or newspaper articles, and showed exclusively important historical buildings and sites of the city. The size of the photos is identical (19.4 x 13.7 cm), and all were horizontally positioned, except for the interior of St Catherine's Church, the church in Stenjevec and the Zagreb Synagogue (no. 5., 7., 15. in this album), which were shown in the vertical format. These photos are also known as the first photographic representation of architectural interiors in the history of Croatian photography, and according to contemporary newspaper reports during photo sessions the indoors were illuminated by electrical or magnesium lights. An important piece in history of photography. A very early example of earthquake photographs, the second in Europe after Naples in 1865. Binding slightly rubbed. Light foxing on the cardboard leaves throughout, no effect on the images. Images clean and sharp. Overall in fine condition. In original leather binding with gilt ruling at edges. Spine gilt with raised bands. Front panel with ornate metal corner pieces, bimetal title plaque, clasp. Edges gilt.         The Common Law, First Edition, Boston, 1881.

1881. First Edition of The Common Law in a Handsome Clamshell Box Holmes, Oliver Wendell, Jr. [1841-1935]. The Common Law. Boston: Little, Brown, And Company, 1881. [i]-xvi, 422 pp. Octavo (8" x 5-1/4"). Original maroon pebbled cloth, blind double frames to boards, gilt title to spine, triple gilt rules at spine ends. Light rubbing to boards, early repairs (?) to a few tiny scuffs on rear board, moderate rubbing to extremities with some wear to spine ends and corners, which are bumped, front hinge partially cracked. Light toning to text, finger smudges to a few leaves. Book housed in recent quarter morocco clamshell box with marbled boards, gilt edged raised bands and gilt title to spine. An appealing copy in a handsome box. * First edition, presumed first issue (two-line printer statement at foot of the title page, verso, reading "University Press:/ John Wilson and Son, Cambridge and a one-line statement to foot of p. 422 reading "University Press: John Wilson & Son, Cambridge"). As Friedman points out, "The Common Law was easily the most distinguished book on law by an American published between 1850 and 1900." In contrast to earlier Anglo-American jurists, and the reigning positivist ethos of the nineteenth century, Holmes proposed that the law was not a science founded on abstract principles but a body of practices that responded to particular situations. This functionalist interpretation led to his radical conclusion that law was not discovered, but invented. This radical theme is announced at the beginning of Lecture I: "The life of the law has not been logic: it has been experience" (1). Winfield observes that Holmes's "brilliant exposition, as effective on English scholarship and legal thinking as on American, of the true nature of law both as a development from the past and an organism of the present, blew fresh air into lawyer's minds encrusted with Blackstone and Kent." It went on to become a decisive influence on sociological jurisprudence, legal realism and the general development of Anglo-American law in the twentieth century.         Sherman on His Saddle – His One "Honest Relic" of the March to the Sea

Washington, D.C. 1881 - Autograph Letter Signed, to Colonel Herbert E. Hill. Washington, D.C., December 6, 1881. 4 pp., 5 x 7 3/4 in. On "Headquarters Army of the United States" stationery. Laid onto a larger sheet of paper. "Yesterday the Hon. S. B Bowman called . asking the loan of "the sword or sabre I wore" during the famous March to the Sea . I explained to Mr Bowman that the truth was I did not have a sword or sabre during that march, nor at any time after I succeeded General Grant in the command of the Western Armies at Nashville March 1864." Complete TranscriptHeadquarters Army of the United States, Washington, D.C. Dec 6 1881Col. Herbert E. Hill Atlantic Avenue Boston Mass.My dear sir, Yesterday the Hon. S. B Bowman called with your letter of Novr 29, asking the loan of "the sword or sabre I wore" during the famous March to the Sea for exhibition at the Fair in the interest of a Soldiers Home to be held at Boston December 7, inst &c &c. I explained to Mr Bowman that the truth was I did not have a sword or sabre during that march, nor at any time after I succeeded General Grant in the command of the Western Armies at Nashville March 1864. The only honest Relic I possess of that march is my saddle, a Grimsley, which I value for its real goodness. I use it now when I have occasion to mount a horse Still for the purpose you name, to please "several thousand old soldiers" I have sent it to you by Adams & Co Express, and hereby certify that I actually used that saddle during the war from about July 1862 till the end. I rode that identical saddle from Corinth Miss to Chattanooga, to Atlanta, and to Washington. I have several swords here dress swords never used in war, and I also possess in some old chest at St Louis swords worn by me as Col, Brig Gen and Maj Genl, but I reiterate that I did not wear any sword at all during the march to the sea, only occasionally an old black belt, long since thrown or given away. When you are done with my saddle, please send it back to me No 817, 15th St. Washington DC, as I have confidence in this saddle and propose to use it as long as I am able to ride. Wishing you all success in your laudable & noble enterpriseYour friend and Servant W.T. ShermanHistorical BackgroundThornton Grimsley of St. Louis, Missouri, manufactured saddles from the early 1830s. In 1846, he received a government contract to manufacture saddles for the mounted forces of the United States, and his pattern was officially adopted by the army in 1847. Although it appeared similar to its predecessor, the Ringgold, the Grimsley saddle's tree was lighter and covered in rawhide and the seat was stuffed with deer hair under the quilting. It had a high pommel and cantle. The United States cavalry and officers of all branches used the Grimsley saddle until the adoption of the 1859 McClellan saddle. However, officers of both the United States and Confederate forces still rode Grimsley saddles throughout the Civil War.Most likely, the saddle to which Sherman refers is the one donated to the United States National Museum in 1919 by his family. From the Smithsonian Institution, Report on the Progress and Condition of the United States National Museum for the Year Ending June 30, 1919 (GPO, 1920): "From Miss Mary E Thackera [presumably granddaughter], Mrs. Eleanor Sherman Thackara Cauldwell [daughter], through Mr. P. T. Sherman [son, Philmon Tecumseh], New York City, were received as a gift, a saddle, bridle, pair of holsters, and blanket roll, owned by Gen. William T. Sherman, United States Army, during and subsequent to the Civil War."William T. Sherman (1820-1891), a West Point graduate and Mexican War veteran, served as a corps commander under General Grant in successful campaigns down the Mississippi and in Tennessee. He then took command of the western armies when Grant was reassigned to the Virginia theatre. He was both recognized and criticized for his tactics of "scorched earth" and "total war," .         Eigenhändiger Brief m.U. "Fest[ung] Niederschönenfeld (Bayern) 10. August [19]22. 2 S. 4.

S i c h will es auf seiner Bühne (der Volksbühne, der Arbeiterbühne) erleben, s i c h in seiner Not, s i c h in seinen hohen Träumen. S e i n e heldischen Gestalten will es erleben, s e i n e leidgekrümmten Brüder, s e i n e prometheischen Menschen, die das Chaos des Lebens bezwingend und übermächtigend, das Banner neuer menschheitlicher Ideen kämpfend in Händen hielten und kämpfend siegten oder unterlagen. Der proletarischen Kunst also gehört meine Schaffenskraft.

        BALLADS ABOUT AUTHORS

      D. Lothrop Company, Boston 1881 - Illustrations by Edmund H. Garrett. Boston: D. Lothrop Company, 1887. First edition. Tipped-in on a prefatory blank leaf is a three-page holographic poem ("Pope's Mother at Twickenham") by Spofford, signed by her below the final stanza. This poem first appeared in the August 1891 issue of Wide Awake. A collection of poetic homages to Oliver Goldsmith, Samuel Johnson, John Milton, William Shakespeare, and others by the New England writer best known for her gothic romances, which were set apart by luxuriant descriptions and an unconventional handling of female stereotypes of the era. Her reputation began when the Atlantic Monthly published "In the Cellar" (February 1859), a tale of Parisian life. Published anonymously, her first novel, Sir Rohan's Ghost (1860), in the tradition of Poe, is the story of a man who tries to kill his mistress and is later plagued by her daughter, with whom he falls in love. The many works that followed often featured female leads and attracted the attention of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Rose Terry Cooke, Mary Wilkins Freeman, and William Dean Howells, among others. When asked whether she read Spofford's work, Emily Dickinson responded, "I read Miss Prescott's 'Circumstance,' but it followed me in the dark, so I avoided her." Later, following her marriage to the poet Richard S. Spofford, Jr., she expanded her repertoire to include poetry, essays, and travel writing. Some of her many literary friendships in New England are recalled in A Little Book of Friends (1916). Octavo. Original brown cloth binding, with decorative gilt and green stamping. The spine is darkened just a touch, with some wear to the corners and tips; else very good. BAL 18486. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

1881-1901 War Of The Rebellion OFFICIAL RECORDS of The Confederate and Union Armies, 126 1ST ISSUE Volumes

Government Printing Office - **For pick-up only in Southern New Hampshire** Here are 126 Volumes from the ORIGINAL (1st issue) "War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies." First issue set; Government Printing Office, Washington. The Volumes are dated between 1881 and 1901. Only 10,000 copies of this original edition were printed (see Preface, below). All Volumes are in their original binding. This particular set had been owned by the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts. Often referred to as the "Official Records" (or, "OR"), this set constitutes the most extensive collection of primary sources of the history of the Civil War. Included are first-hand accounts, orders, reports, maps, diagrams and correspondence from War and Navy Department records of both Confederate and Union governments. The reports contained in the "OR" are those of the principal leaders who fought the battles and then wrote their assessments days, weeks, and sometimes months later. The "OR" is thus the eyewitness accounts of the veterans themselves. The set consists of 126 Volumes (a complete list of the volumes included can be provided). ***Pick-Up Only in southern New Hampshire*** From the Preface: "By an act approved June 23, 1874, Congress made an appropriation 'to enable the Secretary of War to begin the publication of the Official Records of the War of the Rebellion, both of the Union and Confederate Armies,' and directed him 'to have copied for the Public Printer all reports, letters, telegrams, and general orders not heretofore copied or printed, and properly arranged in chronological order. Appropriations for continuing such preparation have been made from time to time, and the act approved June 16, 1880, has provided 'for the printing and binding, under direction of the Secretary of War, of 10,000 copies of a compilation of the Official Records (Union and Confederate) of the War of the Rebellion, so far as the same may be ready for publication, during the fiscal year'; and that 'of said number 7,000 copies shall be for the use of the House of Representatives, 2,000 copies for the use of the Senate, and 1,000 copies for the use of the Executive Departments.'" **Please note that, due to the number of Volumes and weight of the set, I am unable to ship it. The set is for pick-up only - located in southern New Hampshire. An arrangement could be made where I would be willing to deliver within New England.** Condition: Overall this is a fantastic reading and/or reference set, as the pages are in terrific condition. In thumbing through each volume, only an occasional stain and a couple volumes with some pencil notations was found; no foxing was found. A few volumes were found to have detached end papers. One volume has a piece of the spine torn off at the upper-right corner; a couple other volumes have cloth tears at the edges of the spine. The primary condition flaw with this set is with the hinges, due to the heft of the books and the stress put on them - - there are 11 volumes where the spine is completely detached from the text block (these could be repaired with book glue); about a dozen more volumes have cracks at the hinges where the cover is nearly detached and barely holding. But on the whole, the set is in very good condition with remarkably clean pages. Book plate affixed to front pastedown of most volumes. ***Pick-Up Only in southern New Hampshire*** [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Eigenhändiger Brief m.U. "Fest[ung] Niederschönenfeld (Bayern) 10. August [19]22. 2 S. 4°.

S i c h will es auf seiner Bühne (der Volksbühne, der Arbeiterbühne) erleben, s i c h in seiner Not, s i c h in seinen hohen Träumen. S e i n e heldischen Gestalten will es erleben, s e i n e leidgekrümmten Brüder, s e i n e prometheischen Menschen, die das Chaos des Lebens bezwingend und übermächtigend, das Banner neuer menschheitlicher Ideen kämpfend in Händen hielten und kämpfend siegten oder unterlagen. Der proletarischen Kunst also gehört meine Schaffenskraft. Sprache: deu [Attributes: First Edition]

$1,250. THE TRIBULATIONS OF A CHINAMAN

1881 - Translated by Ellen E. Frewer. Illustrated by L. Benett. New York: E.P. Dutton and Company, 1881. 1 page undated ads (with prices in sterling). Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. First Illustrated Edition of this curious tale. Wealthy Chinaman hears that his fortune is lost. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn't lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can't contact him. This Dutton edition was actually published in October 1880, exactly a year after Lee and Shepard of Boston published the first edition in English (which was unillustrated, and was in a plain binding). Although this Dutton edition comes from the British sheets (including the same binding design, the same plates, and even an ad leaf for Verne's works with prices in sterling), it was published a month earlier than Sampson Low's first British edition.~This is an unusually bright, clean copy: fine, virtually as new.
