A rare document signed by James Garfield as President, only five weeks before his shooting by Charles Guiteau, ordering Secretary James G. Blaine to affix the seal to the appointment of former Union General Stephen A. Hurlbut as U.S. Minister to Peru during the Pacific War against Chile

"Partly-printed Document Signed, ""James A. Garfield,"" as President, 1 page, 8"" x 9.75"", Washington, May 27, 1881 authorizing the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to ""the envelope of my letter accrediting Stephen A. Hurlbut as Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States."" Expected folds, discreet mounting remnants on verso, just a hint of toning at extreme margins, else fine condition. Stephen A. Hurlbut (1815-1882) served in the Union Army during the Civil, commanding a division at Shiloh, and later commanding a corps during Sherman's Meridian Expedition of 1864. Following the war, Hurlbut served as Minister Resident to Columbia from 1869 to 1872. After a brief stint in Congress, Garfield appointed him Ambassador to Peru in 1881. His short tenure in Lima (he died a year later) was not uneventful as Peru and Bolivia were fighting Chile in the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). During his time in Peru, Hurlbut suffered an embarrassing altercation with Hugh Judson Kilpatrick (1836-1881), who Garfield had appointed United States Minister to Chile only two months prior. Both men (quite improperly) became partisans for the nations in which they resided and greatly complicated the peace negotiations between the two warring South American republics. "

Die Endoskopie der Harnröhre und Blase.

      - Dtsch. Chir., Lfg.51. - First Edition. In 1876, Josef Grünfeld of Gyorke/Hungaria, a pioneer of cystoscopy, was the first to successfully catheterize the ureters under vision, using malleable catheters introduced into bladder alongside his glassended endoscope. He also was the first surgeon which observe a bladder tumor by cystoscope (1885). - Murphy, 183 & 351; Kiefer Cat. 251; Nicht bei Benjamin Collection. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Lehrbuch der Gehirnkrankheiten. 3 Bde.

. Kassel, Berlin, Theodor Fischer, 1881/1883, 8°, (4), V, 1 Bl., 371 pp.; XXXV, 1 Bl., 215 pp., 2 Bl.; pp. 253-572; 96 Abb., 3 orig. Leinenbände; feines Exemplar.. Erste Ausgabe! - cf.Fischer, p.1669 - First Edition. "The three-volume 'Lehrbuch der Gehrinkrankheiten...' is an astounding accomplishment for so a young man (Wernicke was 33 when volume one appeared). It was the first comprehensive account of the achievements in cerebral localization up to that time. Particularly interesting was his postulation of the symptomatology, resulting from thrombosis of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery, based on his anatomical investigations of the arterial supply of the medulla oblongata... In his 'Lehrbuch' (vol. 2, p.229), too, he brought to light the clinical syndrome of 'polio-encephalitis superior haemorrhagica', which has become 'Wernicke's encephalopathy'.         Doctor Wortle's School

London: Chapman and Hall, 1881. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in 3/4 blue leather with coordinated blue cloth, top edge of the closed page blocks gilded (some modest rubbing to the board corners and tiny rubs to the spine ends -- bound without the catalogue); Trollope's tale of the Rev. Mr. Peacocke, an Englishman, who, while teaching in St. Louis, befriended the deserted wife of Ferdinand Lefroy, a man of bad character. Upon later confirming that Lefroy had died, he married the widow. Lefroy then reappeared, made himself known to the newly-wed couple, and then disappeared again. Peacocke promptly returned to England with his bride where the couple took positions at Doctor Wortle's school and grew quite popular. Rumors of their past emerged and Peacocke confessed his unintentional bigamy to his employer. Lefroy's brother turned up intent on blackmail, found that Peacocke's secret had already been discovered, abandoned his blackmailing scheme and acknowledged that Ferdinand Lefroy had indeed died subsequent to the Peacocke's marriage. What then, was to be done respecting the Peacocke's bigamous marriage and their employment at the school? A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of a rather uncommon Trollope novel.

Gorgeous plates throughout. Institutional stamps on plates. A rare volume. "A collection of plates on Indian textiles from the Victoria & Albert Museum which include many designs for turbans, garments, scarf and mats. The museum's Indian collections have their origins in the East India Company's Museum, or Oriental Repository, founded in 1791. In 1881, the year of publication of the present book, Caspar Purdon Clarke, who had arranged the new Indian section, was sent to India to expand the collections with instructions to collect objects in everyday production in order to encourage the 'native art manufactures' of India. It was also intended that these would provide models of design and ornamentation for British manufacturers and art students. Clarke's purchases included probably the museum's largest single acquisition of Indian textiles, in all more than a thousand examples of textiles and dress." - Christie's Sale 4826, Lot 194, 25 April 2012.       A Novel. By Mrs. J.H. Riddell, Author of ‘George Geith,’ ‘The Mystery in Palace Gardens,’ etc. In three volumes. London: Richard Bentley and Son, Publishers in Ordinary to her Majesty the Queen, 1881. (All Rights reserved.) 3 Vols., sm.cr.8vo; final leaf in each volume a single inset; pp.[vi]+298; [vi]+309+[i (blank)]; [vi]+290; diagonally very-fine-ribbed apple-green cloth blocked very dark green on front cover and spine, lettered very dark green on front cover, gilt on spine; end-papers printed with flower-and-leaf design in grey-green. One or two very minor faults, but a very nice copy, near-fine. Scarce thus. Very scarce. Sadleir, 2066, listing the copy from the publisher’s file; Wolff lists only a later German reprint; Hubin, p.346. Includes a fair amount of detection, and the subject is financial swindling, but the story involves nothing that would have been criminous at the time. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated.
