THE HUGE 1881 ICONIC ORIGINAL "Merry Old Santa Claus" Wood-Engraving/Print [directly from which our modern visualization of Father Christmas / Santa Claus derives.] WITH, a second anonymous but quality engraving "Santa Claus at Work" [displaying the then traditional image of Santa Claus and sleeping children transposed onto a wooded scene of bears, rabbits and candles in trees.]

Yule-Tide, London 1881 - Ultra-rare and truly iconic large original antique engraved prints of Santa Claus, one of which, the Thomas Nast illustration, changed the popular image of Santa for ever after. Thomas Nast was a German-born American caricaturist and cartoonist, considered to be the 'Father of the American Cartoon'. Both these illustrations are taken from the same rare (unrecorded at British Library) publication: YULE-TIDE (issue no. 1), published on December 23rd 1881. The Nast engraving (approx. 21 in. by 14 in.) was first published in Harper's Weekly in January of the same year and is identical. Merry Old Santa has a white bushy beard and is holding a long clay pipe in one hand with toys for the children under the other. The picture is in FINE condition, having been bound into a volume of other periodical Christmas Specials, so does have stitching needle puncture marks along the fold but these are normally invisible and only become visible when held up to the light. There is the text of a Christmas story on the reverse. The second illustration is by an anonymous artist and is half the size (approx. 14 in. by 9.5 in.) but is of finer quality depicting a less flamboyant Santa, dressed in practical winter clothes though still with arms full of toys. Two sleeping children lie on pillows, the glass decanter, tumbler and oil lamp are similarly exquisitely rendered. The Germanic forest backdrop has wolves, rabbits and birds watching playful bears putting lit candles in the trees in the moonlight. A charming scene. The picture is in FINE condition with one tiny closed tear and corner crease to the bottom edge, not affecting the picture at all. No show-through of the text on the reverse. So, two rare original Christmas-time illustrations, one traditional and looking back, the other about to change the image of Santa Claus for good. A cultural tipping-point. 20% price reduction applied.

Mitford "served with the [14th Regt. Bengal Cavalry (Lancers)] throughout the period it was employed in the war, taking part in the advance on and occupation of Kabul, the action of Charasiab, and the operations around Kabul and the Defence of Sherpur in Dec., 1879, and … was mentioned in despatches... Publisher's blue cloth, gilt lettered spines. The complete coleoptera section of this highly important work on the fauna and flora of Central America. 'The best example of an entomologist who devoted his main efforts to the study of exotic faunas was H.W. Bates (1825-1892). In his early career he spent more than ten years in South America, partly in company with the famous A.R. Wallace; he was a great general biologist, the first to discover the form of mimicry in butterflies that afterwards was named after him. He worked on different insect groups, with his first paper published in 1843. After 1870 he almost exclusively turned to Coleoptera and may be termed the father of coleopterology not only for tropical America, as manifested by his volumes on Carabidae, Longicornia, and Lamellicornia in Godman & Salvin's 'Biologia Centrali-Americana' (Smith, R.T., History of Entomology p. 145).The whole work was published in 215 parts in 63 volumes from 1875-1915. It was 'the most thorough study of the animals, plants, and human beings of Central America ever attempted' (Nature in the New World p. 187). The zoological section described 38,637 animals, approximately half as new species and half as new genera. A very fine copy.B.M. (Nat. Hist) VI, p. 380. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Chess Monthly

London: Jas Wade, 1881-1882 iv+380 pages with illustrations, diagrams, tables, and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") bound in quarter black leather with gilt lettering to spine and blue marbled boards. From the library of Dino Ruggieri. Volume III (3). (Betts: 7-25). First edition. The Chess Monthly of Great Britain was one of the first to give properly annotated games. The principal editor, Leopold Hoffer, was helped enormously by having J H Zukertort as co-editor until his death in 1888. There were four regular sections: news, annotated games, problems and endgames. In addition, Hoffer carried on a profoundly bitter feud with his one-time benefactor, Steinitz. This publication should not be confused with The Chess Monthly published in the United States which was short lived from 1857-1862 and edited by Fiske and Morphy.Dino Ruggieri was born in, Pigüé a small city in the Buenos Aires province, October 22, 1921. His parents were both Italians, natives of Porto D'Ascoli. In their early years in Argentina, the Ruggieri?s family lived in the country, located about 45 miles from Pigüé. The family was engaged in agriculture. When Ruggieri was 8, his father purchased a home in Pigüé, where he lived until 2008. In 1938 he was involved in an accident and he was transferred to Buenos Aires for recovery. This was the beginning of his hobby of chess, both as a player over the board and by correspondence, but as well as a major collector of chess materials. After his recovery he became a prominent local chess player and very good representative in postal chess, where he represented Argentina in matches against Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and other countries. He was using the correspondence with his rivals to offer exchanges. Ruggieri was related to Mr Niemeijer and soon began exchanging materials and making important purchases. He also had frequent contacts with Gregorio Lastra, Normando Ivaldi, Gaspar Soria and Carlos De Veyga, all known collectors of chess. He died in 2009 in 2009 at the age of 88.Condition:Corners bumped, some foxing else a very good copy of a scarce item.

        Cobwebs and Cables

Religious Tract Society n.d. (not after 1881), London - 8vo. viii, 365 pp. With woodcut illustrations in the text. Original publisher's cloth, gilt extra.1881). Original publisher's cloth, elaborately decorated with spider webs on front cover and spine (slightly leaning) RARE FIRST EDITION. THIS IS THE ONLY COPY ON THE MARKET. PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR. Hesba Stretton (1832-1911) was the nom de plume of Sarah Smith, a very popular (and very prolific) English author of religious books for children. The name Hesba came from the initials of her siblings. She was the daughter of a bookseller (sic!). A tangled web of misery and trouble, this captivating story describes a man's decision to sin out of desperation to serve the one he loves. "It soon becomes clear that one lie from a "truthful" man is more hurtful than all the lies of a liar. Those who yield to its power engage in an intricate path of falsehood-an entangling maze-that ever deepens as one lie builds upon another. As you wrestle with the characters in this engaging drama, rest assured that your confidence will grow, not in man, but in our loving, forgiving God." (SOURCE: Reprint edition, preface). INSCRIBED: "For our cousin Annie Hope, with Lizzie and Hesba Stretton's love. Christmas, 1881." The delightful Victorian "spider-web" bookbinding is a joy to behold; we anticipate that we will forever regret selling this particular rare book.         Marcel Vertès. Manuscript

Salmon, Andre, n.p., n.y. [Paris] - Salmon, Andre. [1881-1969]. French poet, art critic & writer. He was one of the defenders of cubism, with Apollinaire and Maurice Raynal; an authentic member of the 'Avant-Garde'. In 1904, lived in Bateau-Lavoir with Picasso, Max Jacob and Apollinaire. In 1964 he was awarded the Grand Prix for poetry by the French Academy. Autographed Manuscript Signed. N.p., n.d. 4to, full page in green fountain pen on pad paper stock. Several corrections. Lovely content - the entire text in French about the artist & illustrator, Marcel Vertès. [Wasn't it Pierre MacOrlan who discovered Vertès?] A beautiful 'Hommage' to Budapest born Vertès [1895 - 1961], an outstanding 20th century painter, printmaker & illustrator, who moved to Paris during the First World War. Living and working in the famous Latin Quarter, Vertes quickly established himself as one of the most important artists of the Paris scene, thus continuing in the footsteps of Boutet, Forain, Toulouse-Lautrec & others. The art of Marcel Vertes was at its peak during the vibrant & somewhat wild decade of the 1920’s. Concentrating upon scenes of Paris street life, portrayals of women & depictions of circus & cabaret acts, Vertès left a legacy of original lithographs & drawings that superbly capture the spirit of 1920’s Paris. Vertes would be also be noted for his stunning line of Schiaparelli perfume advertisements. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Illuminated Manuscript

1881. Full Morocco. Fine. A richly illuminated Victorian manuscript notable for its great variety of ornamentation and done by a woman famous in her day. 4to. 28 by 24 cm. 59 leaves of heavy card, each with illumination. The illluminator, Edith Baird, was the "Queen of Chess" in her day. She wrote several books on chess problems, most notably, "Seven Hundred Chess Problems", Henry Sotheran, 1902, "The Twentieth Century Retractor", also Henry Sotheran, 1907. She was the daughter of a poet, Thomas Winter-Wood, who wrote under the name of "Vanguard" and who also was a chess master, as were two of Edith's brothers. The verse contained in this album do not bear titles. Edith Baird may have written some or all of the poems, but nothing definite can be said about their authorship. In addition to English, some verse is in German and French. While there are references to heaven and God, the poems are more spiritual than religious. Several of the leaves are illustrated with no poetry at all. While Ms. Baird's chess expertise might not seem germane to the book at hand, one can not help but note that the same meticulous thought with which she attacked the thorny challenges of the game she applied to her artwork, with its precise attentiion to detail. She also exhibits real originality in her painting. While drawing inspiration from Gothic, Celtic, the Medieval, Renaissance and Arabic ornamentation, she fused these influences in imaginative ways, and she managed to steer clear of repeating herself, notwithstanding the heft of the album she created. Other than a missing brass piece for the clasp to latch onto on the front board, this album is wonderfully well-preserved.

"A major event in British marbling, and surely one of the prime events in the entire history of marbling, occurred with the publication of Charles Woolnough's The Art of Marbling... There is no denying that (this book) was the most remarkable contribution to the literature up to that time, and it remains, together with a handful of other manuals, an essential work. In these initial editions he not only provided for all posterity the most intimate and detailed information on the actual materials and methods of the craft then in use, but also gave precise instructions for making approximately thirty patterns - the complete armamentarium of the English marbler at mid-nineteenth century - including both older designs and those that recently had become popular. Woolnough's new and slightly enlarged edition of his manual, issued in 1881, incorporated a few more patterns that had been introduced in the intervening years." - Wolfe, Marbled Paper, Its History, Techniques, and Patterns pp.77-80.         History of the Zulu War and its Origin

London: Chapman and Hall, Limited,, 1881. Second Edition, with Additions. Octavo. Original brown cloth, title gilt to the spine, blind rules to the boards, brown surface-paper endpapers. Folding coloured map at the rear, folding plan of Isandhlwana. Very lightly rubbed, corners turned, head and tail of the spine slightly crumpled, front free endpaper neatly replaced, light toning, a very nice copy. This second edition - "very carefully revised, and [with] some new important matter inserted" including the plan of Isandhlwana - followed a year after the first. Colenso was the daughter of the Bishop of Natal, and a noted Zulu sympathiser, Durnford's brother, Anthony, had died at Isandhlwana "the central figure of a knot of brave men" (ODNB) in a last stand against the overwhelming Zulu force. He was made the scapegoat for the humiliating defeat, and his brother and Colenso "endeavoured through their writings and public lobbying to rehabilitate his reputation." However, this work is far from a narrow apologia, but attempts to place the war within a wider political context, severely criticising "the general policy of Sir Bartle Frere towards Zululand and its king, and it is maintained that the idea of the subjugation of the Zulus had occupied the minds of certain British statesmen since the year 1873, while it was well known that a war would be popular in Natal" (Mendelssohn). Decidedly uncommon.

Die Uberschatzung Lessing's und dessen Anwaltschaft fur die Juden [The Overvaluation of Lessing and his Advocacy of the Jews]

Karlsruhe und Liebzig: Verlag von H. Reuther. 1881. First. First edition. Octavo. 93, [1]pp. Green cloth gilt. Spine a bit faded and a little foxing in the text, very good or better. Signed by Duhring at the conclusion of the introduction. Bookplate of Friedrich Lessing (presumably a descendent of the subject), with much pencil marginalia in German, presumably in his hand, most confined to the introduction and front matter. Pencil note: "Breslauer 29 Aug 1944" (presumably purchased from the prominent German-American rare bookseller at that time). Duhring was a philosopher and economist, and one of the promoters of the anti-Semitic movement in Germany. This work denigrates the role of the 18th century German philosopher and dramatist Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, whose works promoted religious tolerance, as evidenced by his friendship with Moses Mendelssohn. .

A Collection of Novels Inscribed to Close Friend

      - A collection of twenty-one novels by Dell, nearly all Inscribed to her close friend, the childhood nurse of her adopted niece with whom she shared a home for many years.Ethel Mary Dell (1881-1939) was a popular romance novelist in the early part of the 20th Century. Born in 1881 to a middle class English family, she led a quiet, ordinary life, being very shy and retiring in nature. Although introverted, she had a lively imagination and began writing stories, and getting them published in popular magazines, at a young age. Her first novel, *The Way of an Eagle*, was published in 1911 and was an immediate success. She continued writing popular romance novels until her death in 1939. Many of her works, including several here, were turned into silent films in the 1910s and 1920s.Dell's extraordinary popularity can be difficult for today's readers to appreciate but her influence is reflected in the writings of several authors with whom they would be more familiar. For example, the monologues of James Joyce's character Gerty MacDowell in Ulysses are written in the style of Dell's novels. P.G. Wodehouse created a character in his famous Jeeves and Wooster series based on Dell: "Rosie M. Banks," and in a separate short story he also had a similar character named "Leila M. Pinkney." Both characters are authors of romance novels and explicitly based on Dell. The protagonist of George Orwell's Keep the Aspidistra Flying frequently mentions Dell. In these instances both Orwell and Wodehouse were critical of Dell and exhibited the tendency of writers and artists of every age to disparage their contemporaries whose appeal was broader, and whose success was more commercial. Dell reportedly paid little heed to such attacks; she considered herself a storyteller first and foremost. Her aim was to entertain her readers, and this she accomplished. While her fame has long ago waned, her writing and its immense popularity are no less a reflection of her time than the relatively few works of her peers that are still read today.Despite her lucrative writing career and its attendant fame, Dell remained almost pathologically shy. Few photographs were ever taken of her and she was never interviewed by the press. When she was forty, she married Lieutenant-Colonel Gerald Savage, who dedicated himself to his wife's career and fiercely guarded her privacy. Because of these circumstances, signed books by Dell are rare. This set of her works, with their intimate association, is therefore highly unusual. The twenty-one books in the collection range from 1915 to 1938. A few of the books are reprints, but most are English or American first editions, and most are inscribed in the year of publication. The copies lack dustjackets, and are generally in very good to fine condition. Full condition details upon request. The collection includes:*The Knave of Diamonds*. 1915 Inscribed early reprint.*The Keeper of the Door*. 1916 early reprint.*The Lamp in the Desert*. 1919 Inscribed first American edition.*The Tidal Wave and Other Stories*. 1919 Inscribed first edition.*The Top of the World*. 1920 Inscribed first edition.*Rosa Mundi and Other Stories*. 1921 Inscribed first edition.*The Obstacle Race*. 1921 Inscribed first edition.*Charles Rex*. 1922 Inscribed first edition.*The Odds, and Other Stories*. 1922 Inscribed first edition.*Tetherstones*. 1923 Inscribed first American edition.*The Unknown Quantity*. 1924 Inscribed first American edition.*The Passer-By and Other Stories*. 1925 Inscribed first American edition.*A Man Under Authority*. 1926 Inscribed first American edition.*The Black Knight*. 1927 Inscribed second American printing.*The House of Happiness and Other Stories*. 1927 Inscribed first American edition.*Peggy By Request: The Love Story of Noel and Peggy from "The Keeper of the Door" Written by Request of Some of My Readers*. 1928 Inscribed first American edition.*Dona Celestis*. 1933 Inscribed first American edition.*The Prison Wall*. 1933 Inscribed first [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

He had a collection of paintings by the Pre-Raphaelites and from artists of the Aesthetic Movement, as well as an important collection of Italian Renaissance paintings. His collection included Rossetti's "The Blessed Damozel," "Monna Rosa Proserpine", and "Lady Lillith." Rossetti also painted portraits of Leyland and his wife. Other well-known works commissioned by Leyland were "The Beguiling of Merlin" by Edward Burne-Jones, and Whistler's Peacock Room, which was installed in his London house (The Peacock Room may now be seen at the Freer Art Gallery).       1881 - [a scarce set in blue] [Together, two volumes.] Translated from the French by Miss Agnes D. Kingston. Illustrated. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1881. 8 pp undated ads in each volume. Original blue cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt, beveled. First American hardbound edition of this tale taking place in India; to quote the synopsis provided by Scribner's at the time (as cited in T&M),~Account of a journey through northern India, in 1867, by four Englishmen, in search of hunting and adventure; they travel over ground made memorable by the Indian mutiny, of which many thrilling episodes are recalled and described; the famous Nana Sahib figures considerably in the work, a renewed effort having been made at that time by the English government to capture him; the search for him and his death are described; the great feature of this story is the original manner in which the characters travel, their equipage consisting of a complete house on wheels, drawn by a huge traction engine having the form of an elephant.~THE DEMON OF CAWNPORE has on its front cover an illustration of the "steam elephant" pulling the passenger car; TIGERS AND TRAITORS shows Maucler and Captain Hood taking refuge inside a tiger cage as tigers circle around them.~George Munro published the first (unillustrated) edition in English of Part I in August 1880, and Part II in January 1881, in his self-wrappered "Seaside Library." Sampson Low published the first illustrated edition of Part I in December 1880, followed by Part II in April 1881. And Part I of this Scribner edition was published in February 1881, followed by Part II in May 1881.~These two volumes are in blue cloth; we have also seen them in red cloth and (much more typically) in grey, terra-cotta or brown cloth (no priority). Both volumes are in just-about-fine condition (the merest hint of wear at the spine heads). This is the only set we have ever seen in blue. Taves & Michaluk V021; Myers 46.
