1880. Nice book...really big, nice book. The Poetical Works of Lord Byron with Illustrations...Published in Philadelphia by Porter and Coates sometime in the late 1800's. The book is in excellent condition, clean, crisp and has all three gold gilded page edges...can't see it to well in the photos but the gold glistens as seen in person. It measures 10" high by 7" left to right and is 2-1/2" thick...due to its having 984 pages. I have searched the web to find another exact copy, never found one like this, found lots of others in varied stages of wear and priced all over the place so my price here is "guess" so if you like it...make an offer.

Estes and Lauriat. Very Good/Near Fine--upper hinges starting, boards still soundly attached. Wear along hinges and extremities of boards. Bindings quite firm and sound. Attractive private bookplate of Oliver Kendall mounted to pastedowns. Lacking one plate, the frontis to Volume 1 by R. Swain Gifford. Contents in superb condition, no foxing or spotting. The American Art Review: A Journal devoted to the Practice, Theory, History and Archaeology of Art. Boston: Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat, 1880-1881. The complete run in two volumes, including the first volume, and the second volume (in two divisions, paginated separately, but bound together.) A sumptuous production, featuring many original etchings bound in, by artists including James Smillie, Paul Rajon, Thomas Moran (2 etchings), Peter Moran (2), J.M. Falconer, Albert F. Bellows, S.J. Ferris, R. Swain Gifford, Frederick Stuart Church, Kruseman Van Elten, Stephen Parrish, Anna Lea Merritt, Eliza Greatorex, and Charles A. Platt. There are about 135 full page plates among the two volumes, of which about 50 are original etchings. There may be some confusion on this point, as the table of contents specifies "original etching" only for those works conceived and etched by the same artist (i.e. pinxt. and sculp.) However, many works bound in here (listed merely as "etched by"), are clearly original etchings in terms of process, execution and printing. The distinction of "original etching" vs. "etched by" employed in this work is merely that the latter was made after a painting by another artist, but is still an original … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

Wilson, John Albert
First Edition. Hardcover. As an architectural depiction of early Los Angeles County, along with Wilson's comprehensive description of the county's townships, this book has no equal. It has come to be known ever since as simply the Thompson & West. J. Gregg Layne in his Books of the Los Angeles District, describes it as "one of the rarest of that fine early series of California county histories [...] complied from the newspapers of the county from 1854 to 1880, as well as city and county records, and from interviews with many early pioneers." Among the estates and residences depicted is a veritable who's who of notable Angelenos, including those belonging to Mrs. Phineas Banning, Don Manuel Dominguez, J.E. Hollenbeck, H.M. Newhall, John Rowland, and W.H. Workman. Includes a full-page colored rendition of H.H. Lloyd and Co's map of California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona and 86 lithographed plates, including two two-panel. 11" x 15"; 192 pp. Original dark brown cloth binding over the original black sheep spine, with gilt titles and decorative blindstamping. Small tears to the extremities of a few pages, with a smudge to the border of the map and the opposing leaf. Ink presentation inscription to the Ebell of Los Angeles from Katherine S. Parker, a longtime member, on the Table of Contents leaf. A short tear to the fore-edge of that leaf has been neatly mended. Two additional mends have been made to the verso of the title page. A pair of unobtrusive Ebell ink stamps appear on the front pastedown. The leather has been archivally refurbished. Light fading along the extremities of … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

In contemporary tree calf by Southeran. With engraved portrait frontispieces to five of ten volumes. Alexander Dyce (30 June 1798 - 15 May 1869) was a Scottish dramatic editor and literary historian. He also published 'Remarks on Collier's and Knight's Editions of Shakespeare' (1844); 'A Few Notes on Shakespeare' (1853); and 'Strictures on Collier's new Edition of Shakespeare '(1859), a contribution to the Collier controversy, which ended a long friendship between the two scholars. Wright and Sibley, Montpelier, VT, 1812. FIRST EDITION, 1880. 319 pp. Full calf leather with gilt "Indian Wars" title on spine. Binding in nice condition, text is toned. The last page of text is only about 15% there, with the rest provided in facsimile (see pic). Previous owner signature and inscription on ffep and rear pastedown. A very rare Vermont Imprint and Indian War History title. A scarce work on the history of the Indian Wars in New England, written by the president of the University of Vermont. "This book aroused bitter criticism because of its strictures on colonial bigotry and cruelty to the natives." - Streeter. The book was long believed to have been suppressed by its author because of his mortification at the attacks made on it by reviewers, and both Field and Church give long accounts of its supposed destruction. While there certainly were bitter reviews, and the work is quite rare, more modern bibliographers, notably Marcus McCorison in VERMONT IMPRINTS, have suggested that the suppression story may be exaggerated. Later writers have also praised the book as one of the best written histories of the Indian Wars of New England. Howes S84; Church 1306; Streeter sale 727; Field 1351; Sabin 76366; Gilman, p.240; McCorison, Vermont Imprints, 1420; Pilling, Algonquian Languages, p. 441; Pilling, Proof-Sheets 3474. Alphonse DAUDET
Letter written in ink on Vergé paper, without date or address. An old handwriting indicates the letter was addressed to Zola, information that can not be verified.Daudet relates the impression that the publisher Georges Charpentier left him during a dinner. The importance of the friendly group formed by the writers of the time is here particularly pregnant: " I want to write him a word to propose to come with us five ". Presumably written after the death of Jules Goncourt, probably in the 1880s, as suggested by the use of the only surname Goncourt, the letter evokes a cold between Goncourt and Charpentier: " Goncourt may not be delighted; but he is too well brought up to let him see . VERDI, Giuseppe 1813-1901
4 pp. Octavo. Dated Genoa, January 9, 1880. Unsigned. Heavily worked, with extensive deletions and revisions. An urgent and impassioned draft in which Verdi writes about six of his own works: his operas Aida, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore and La Forza del Destino and his vocal pieces Pater Noster and Ave Maria. In something of a frenzy, the composer calls the recent performance of Rigoletto at La Scala "un fiasco" and that of Aida "un semifiasco." Verdi goes on to discuss Ricordi's publication of two of his recently-composed vocal works, the Pater Noster and the Ave Maria. He insists that Ricordi publish the Pater Noster as in the original and tells him that he will send him a copy of the Ave Maria to be issued as a piano reduction. "It's not a matter of punishing anybody... but I just wanted to avoid a bother with a new public flop. Nothing else... The conductor who was directing the choir must be able to read a short score, right?... Reduce the individual pieces in whatever hell of a key you want. I will send you the Ave Maria tomorrow or the day after, whose simple instrumental part you'll be able to reduce for the piano. So, at La Scala... a semi-fiasco with Aida, a fiasco with Rigoletto and I foresee one for Trovatore... how could it be otherwise? ... Without a single decent singer... In Rigoletto if the tenor is the best one, eternal God! imagine the rest of them! And in Trovatore! ... an ugly screeching..." In a postscript to the document, Verdi discusses the possible staging of both La forza del destino and Aida in Naples, and suggests that Ricordi negotiate with Lampugna … [Klicken Sie unten für eine ausführliche Beschreibung]

(Circus)
v.p: [1880s-'90s]. Seven albumen prints mounted on card, comprising three cabinet cards and four cartes-de-visite, some captioned in pencil on the rear. A fine group of seven circus freakshow and dime museum oddities, similar in theme to the work of Charles Eisenmann. The haunting portrait of a facially disfigured "Elephant Man" is from the Bowery studio of Frank Wendt, Eisenmann's business partner. Includes images of the midget Minnie Warren alone and with her husband Commodore Nutt; Tom Thumb's wedding; the giantess Ella Ewing and family; the sword thrower "The Great Arcarn"; an "Elephant Man" in Middle Eastern dress; and a midget doctor. All in near fine condition.
