        Holy Bible

1880. BIBLE. The Holy BibleÂ… With Explanatory Notes, Practical Obsevations, and Copious Marginal References. By Thomas Scott. Glasgow, Edinburgh and London: William Mackenzie, circa 1880. Two volumes. Folio (11 by 15 inches), contemporary full brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and boards, raised bands, all edges gilt. $2500.Later edition of ScottÂ’s copiously annotated Bible, illustrated with 5 maps and 41 engraved plates, handsomely bound.Although ordained a deacon in 1772, Scott took holy orders more to secure his own comfort than to proclaim Christian doctrine, much of which he did not believe. In the late 1770s, however, a friendship with John Newton (author of the hymn “Amazing Grace”) led to the awakening of ScottÂ’s sincerely evangelical faith. As he wrote in his memoir The Force of Truth (1779), “Forever blessed be the God of long suffering and mercy, who had patience with such a rebel and blasphemer, such an irreverent trifler with his majesty, and such a presumptuous intruder into his sacred ministry!” With great zeal, Scott renewed his devotion to both his parishioners and his biblical studies. This commentary won him a large reputation (though not large royalties, due to his publisherÂ’s debts). “Sir James Stephen does not hesitate to speak of it as ‘the greatest theological performance of our age and country” (DNB). First published in 174 weekly numbers between 1789-92, this edition is embellished with 5 maps and 41 engraved plates, several after paintings by noted biblical painter John Martin (said to have possessed “the genius that to madness nearly is allied” by Art Journal editor S.C. Hall) and a few after photographs by “the most prominent of the early photographers of Egypt and the Holy Land,” Francis Frith (McDarrah & McDarrah, 156). Without preliminary gatherings A-E in Volume I; all biblical text present. See Darlow & Moule 952; Herbert 1366. Houfe, 223. Occasional light foxing. About-fine condition.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1880 - 1880 Wisden in Original Wrappers in Near Fine Condition

1880. This 1880 Wisden is in it's original wrappers and is in close to fine condition. The book is entirely unrestored. The front wrapper is complete, flat and without chips. There is a tiny amount of loss at the top of the rear cover and a small crease on the back cover to the top right hand side. There is a very small amount of loss to the top and bottom of the spine. The binding is tight. Internally, the contents are in fine condition - complete, bright and unmarked. Overall the book is in almost fine condition and it is very rare to find a Wisden of this vintage in such original, unrestored condition. The last 1880 that I sold on Wisden Auction in almost as good condition went for £1,600 so the book is perhaps a bit of a bargain!

A la Guerre comme a la Guerre. BOUND WITH: Le Grand Magasin d'Images

1880. CHAM (pseudonym of NOÉ, Charles Amédée de). A la Guerre comme a la Guerre. BOUND WITH: Le Grand Magasin dÂ’Images (bound first). Paris: Aubert, circa 1880. Oblong quarto, contemporary half green calf gilt, marbled boards and endpapers. $2750.First edition of this suite of 30 full-page hand-colored lithographs of Cham caricatures documenting the French colonization of North Africa, bound with an intriguing publication of 790 French magazine illustrations.Cham saw a career that would result in over 40,000 drawings, many of them caricatures and sketches of French and Algerian life. In 1843 he began to contribute to such newspapers as Le Charivari, whose staff he eventually joined and remained for 30 years. These are ChamÂ’s parodies of war scenes (apparently from the French colonies in North Africa), 30 hand-colored lithographs similar to those he produced for the Album du Siège (Charivari, 1870)— in collaboration with Honoré Daumier. “Cham embued stories [in Le Charivari] with the comic force of his caricaturesÂ… These, in the future, will remain when the fleeting stories are forgotten: the day after the stew evaporates and salt escapes us. People who have seen ChamÂ’s images will always remember the huge success of the cartoonist” (Henri Beraldi). Bound with this is an ingenious publication of 790 small in-text wood-engravings, produced by various engravers and appearing at different times in French magazines, around which is woven a clever story line about the travels and adventures of the Lacroix family, written to match the diverse engravings. Minor spotting to margins of a few plates (not affecting images),light expert restoration to contemporary binding. Extremely good condition.

Terrestrial table globe - Jan Felkl, c. 1880.

SMALL TERRESTRIAL TABLE GLOBE WITH STANLEY?S NEW DISCOVERIES IN THE CONGO?Aardglobe naar de Nieuwste Bronnen bewerkt door W.J. Geerling. Fabriek van J. Felkl. te Praag?, small (16 cm) terrestrial globe with 12 gores produced in Prague by Jan Felkl c. 1880. Lithographed in black and two shades of blue, with Asia, Australia, the Americas and parts of Antarctica outlined in red. With a brass meridian ring graduated in degrees and a brass pointer at the north pole (dial lacking), in a contemporary four-legged wooden base with central support, the horizon ring with a facsimile of a contemporary paper horizon ring pasted on it.A charming little globe, produced in Prague for the Dutch market by Jan Felkl (1817-1887) with the assistance of W.J. Geerling of Arnhem. Schools formed a large part of Felkl?s market, though the globes sold to schools are not distinguished from those sold to others. Since Felkl left Prague for Rostok in 1870 and traded as Felkl & Sohn from 1875, the plates for the present globe must have been made no later than 1870. Africa shows the results of Henry Morton Stanley?s exploration of the Congo in the years 1874 to 1877, so the plates must have been updated. It depicts the upper Congo accurately, reduces the old elongated Lake Albert to its proper extent and perhaps attempts to depict what are now lakes Edward and George. The presence of Transvaal Republic in South Africa suggests a date before its annexation by England in 1881.Condition: professional repair of a 1 cm hole in the Atlantic Ocean, east of West Indies, and a few minor scuffs, but still in good condition overall. A nice little globe from the famous firm of Felkl in Prague.Price: ?3.000,-.

Lebende Tierbilder Ein Ziehbilderbuch [Living Animal Pictures]

München [Munich]: Verlag von Braun & Schneider, 1880. Lothar Meggendorfer's "Lebende Bilder" [Living Animal Pictures] Eight Fantastic Hand Colored Movable Plates [MOVABLE BOOK]. MEGGENDORFER, Lothar. Lebende Tierbilder Ein Ziehbilderbuch [Living Animal Pictures] von Lothar Meggendorfer. Achtzehnte Auflage [Eighteenth edition], München [Munich]: Verlag von Braun & Schneider, [ca. 1890]. Folio (page size: 11 7/8 x 9 1/8 inches; 303 x 233 mm.; Board size: 12 3/4 x 9 3/8 inches; 325 x 238 mm.). [1, foreword], [2-18] pp. Eight hand-colored lithograph plates with movable parts (included in pagination), each with a tab to set the scene in motion. Publisher's color lithographed pictorial boards with original black cloth backstrip. All of the movable parts in perfect working order. Neat (very feint) early ink inscription on front paste-down. Top corners very slightly rubbed worn, lower corners slightly rubbed, otherwise fine. An absolutely spectacular copy of this rare title with virtually no wear to the boards and complete with its original glassine wrapper (slightly chipped). Quite simply, the finest example we have ever seen. According to OCLC there are just a handful of copies located in libraries and institutions worldwide, the earliest being the eighth edition followed by the ninth, twelfth and fifteenth editions. "Meggendorfer's reputation today is based almost solely on his ingenious mechanical picture-books for children. These he began to design during the late 1880s, and many of these books went into multiple German editions besides translations into English, French, Italian, Spanish, Bohemian, Hungarian, and Russian. Deservedly, he is considered the creator and chief innovator of moveable toy books, and his printed works are eagerly sought after by collectors of historical children's literature. He produced books with moveable figures, transformation pictures segmented into three parts and thus interchangeable, books with pop-up designs, rotating wheels as well as four-panel slat pictures which change the illustrations through movement, and simply funny picture books for children that would certainly make them laugh and generally contributed to some educational benefit" (Justin G. Schiller's Introduction to The Publishing Archive of Lothar Meggendorfer. "There is little doubt that the most elaborate and ingenious movables ever produced were those of the German Lothar Meggendorfer (1847-1925) made during the 1880s and 1890s…the mechanisms and operations of Meggendorfer's books-not to mention the originality of his figures-are far superior to any others published before or since. The devices that operated the various figures in Meggendorfer's books consisted of a series of inter-connecting cardboard levers sandwiched between the coloured illustration on the front of the oblong leaf and the dummy pasted behind it. The animated limbs and heads were cut-out models on the front of the picture, and moving the tab set the whole scene in motion" (Haining, Movable Books, p. 65). The Movable plates: 1. "Der Kettenhund" (The chained dog) 2. "Am Teiche" (In the Pond) 3. "Der Fuhrmannsgaul" (The Work Horse) 4. "Die Schafherde" (The Herd of Sheep) 5. "Im Biehstall" (The Cattle Trough) 6. "Cute Freunde" (Cute Friends) 7. "Der Hirsch" (The Deer) 8. "Der Uhu" (The Owl).

        Photograph Album. Middle East.

1880. (SÉBAH, J. Pascal and BÉCHARD, Emile, et al.). Photograph Album. Twenty-two Albumen Prints of Egypt with Views of the Pyramids. Egypt, circa 1880. Oblong quarto, period style full green morocco gilt, raised bands, gilt and blind-stamped boards, watered silk endpapers; 22 vintage albumen prints (each measuring 8 by 10 inches) mounted on heavy card stock (total of each measuring 10 by 14 inches). $7500.Original photograph album of the Middle East circa 1880, with 22 splendid exhibition-size albumen prints from glass negatives, featuring the work of renowned photographers J. Pascal Sébah, Émile Béchard, Langahi and others, including Sébah's images of Alexandria's Column of Pompey, Nile yachts and desert vistas, Langahi's view of Nubian tribesmen, and Béchard's iconic image of people climbing the massive stones of the Great Pyramid. Splendidly bound.Near the end of the 19th century, many ""were captivated by photography's capacity to 'take them there' and bring them directly in contact with the long ago and far away"" (Parr & Badger I:18). With that, Egypt's majestic pyramids and exotic worlds beckoned. This rare album of 22 vintage albumen prints, characteristically produced for England and France, highlights the work of two highly respected photographers: J. Pascal Sébah and Émile Béchard. The Turkish-born Sébah especially possessed a keen sense of his subjects' ""interaction with one another… His outside work involving people is very dramatic: for example, the well-known images of camel caravans in the desert, where a string of camels and their riders walk across the picture place."" Those very qualities are seen here in Sébah's ""Marshée aux Chameaux"" (March of Camels), ""Chameliers"" (Camels), and his images of crowded bazaars and Nile River yachts. In addition Sébah's striking views of Alexandria include one of its catacombs and another of the Column of Pompey, one of the best known ancient monuments standing today. Like Sébah, French photographer Béchard worked in Egypt in the 1870s and 80s, where he was ""known primarily for his photographs of Egyptian antiquities and archaeological sites… characterized by a dramatic sense of presentation"" (Micklewright and Brassey, Victorian Traveler, 118-120). One of his most famous photographs is that featured at the close of this album: ""Ascension de la grand pyramide."" With the misleading signature of Sébah's brother Cosimi, who ran Sébah's studio after his death, Béchard's evocative view of people climbing the massive stones of the Great Pyramid is one of the era's most iconic. This impressive album also features several unattributed prints: a view of the Great Pyramid and Sphinx that closely resembles Francis Frith's distinctive photograph, panoramas of Smyrna in Sébah's Turkish homeland and the portrait of an Ottoman soldier, together with a print of Nubians astride camels, by Langahi, and the image of a veiled woman seated on a donkey (unclear in-negative caption). With 22 vintage albumen prints from glass negatives, each measuring 8 by 10-1/2 inches, individually mounted on heavy card stock, most with in-negative captions and signatures. See Rosenblum, 163. Photographs fresh with only light scattered margin foxing not affecting prints. A rare album of vintage prints in about-fine condition. Beautifully bound.

        Lusiads, Lyricks

1880. First Edition . Signed. CAMOENS, Luis Vaz de. Os Lusiadas [The Lusiads]. Two volumes. WITH: Camoens: His Life and His Lusiads. Two volumes. WITH: The Lyricks. Two volumes. London: Bernard Quaritch, 1880, 1881, 1884. Six volumes in all. Small octavo, original gilt-stamped green cloth, uncut. $4800.First edition set of Richard Burton’s translations of Camoens, with commentary volumes, inscribed by Burton in Volume I of the Lusiads, “With the Author’s very best wishes, [in Arabic] Peace, Abdullah.” Sets containing all six volumes are very scarce, and presentation inscriptions by Burton are extraordinarily scarce.First published in 1572, The Lusiads describes Vasco da Gama’s 1498 discovery of the sea route around Africa to India, the very same route Camoens would take in 1553, when he was sent to India as a soldier. “Burton was attracted to Camoens as the mouthpiece of the romantic period of discovery in the Indian Ocean. The voyages, the misfortunes, the chivalry, the patriotism of the poet were to him those of a brother adventurer. In his spirited sketch of the life and character of Camoens it is not presumptuous to read between the lines allusions to his own career… Burton’s aim was to present to modern English readers as much as might be of the influence that Camoens has exercised for three centuries upon the Portuguese… What to the unimaginative may seem nothing but a tour de force is in truth the highest manifestation of the translator’s art” (DNB). Burton’s translation “is absolutely wonderful… the Portuguese nation owes Burton a very considerable debt for making known to the English the works of their greatest poet. Burton put his soul into ‘Camoens’ chiefly because he so thoroughly sympathized with his hero. There was much in common between the two, both were great patriots who had been neglected by their country, both endured the bitterest disappointments without a murmur, both had suffered much in foreign lands. When a man knows a language thoroughly as Burton did Portuguese, and can add to it a sympathy with his hero, such as in this case, the qualifications for a perfect translator are practically complete” (Penzer, 15). Biographer Edward Rice notes that Burton’s “later handwriting changed into near illegibility,” a statement certainly true of the cramped hand of the inscription in Volume I of the present copy (Rice, 117). While operating undercover as a Pathan doctor, “the name that he took was Al-Haj (the pilgrim) Abdullah, as he used ever afterwards to sign himself in Arabic characters,” as here (DNB). Penzer, 103-106. Bookbinder tickets; armorial bookplates in Volumes III and IV (Life).Light rubbing and soiling to publisher’s cloth bindings, a few inner hinges repaired. Near-fine condition.

        Monograph of the Pittidae

1880. First Edition . GOULD, John. Monograph of the Pittidae. London: by the Author, 1880. Two parts in one, Part I with plates and text, Part II text only, all published. Large folio (15-1/2 by 22-1/2 inches), original half green cloth, original green printed boards. $22,000.First edition of this lovely Gould monograph, with ten beautiful hand-colored plates, in original printed boards as issued. The Pittidae is a family of brilliantly colored and thrush-like insectivorous birds, mostly limited to the subtropical and tropical forests of Asia, Indonesia and Australia. ""In the field of natural history the accomplishments of this man [John Gould] are truly monumental. No other ornithologist has ever exceeded (or will ever exceed) the number of Gould's bird discoveries and the magnitude and splendor of his folio publications"" (Sauer, John Gould, the Bird Man, xv). ""Lithography which introduced a greater freedom of line and softer tones than had hitherto been known was ideally suited as a medium for bird pictures, the finished prints resembling watercolors with the birds set in their natural habitats often amongst plants and flowers. Gould was meticulous about accuracy both in design and coloring"" (Nissen, IVB 381). ""The 10 hand-colored lithographs are mostly taken from the Birds of Asia, Birds of Australia, and Birds of New Guinea"" (Sitwell, 102). Originally projected for completion in four parts, the Pittidae was abandoned after Gould's death. No title page or preliminary letterpress was issued; the title is taken from the front cover. The present copy includes the ten leaves of text written by R.B. Sharpe (each leaf signed ""[R.B.S.]"") for the uncompleted second part. Zimmer, 263. Fine Bird Books 102. McGill/Wood 365.
