REMARKS OF PRESIDENT HAYES, AT THE CELEBRATION OF GENERAL GARFIELD'S ELECTION, CLEVELAND, OHIO, NOVEMBER 4, 1880

n.p., [1880]. First Edition. Wraps. Slightly sunned at the top edge, otherwise Fine. Printed wraps; 4 pages, the last blank. SIGNED on the top margin of the front page "With Compliments/R. B. Hayes" by the President. Prints Hayes's speech celebrating the election of James Garfield to succeed him as President. "You all remember how four years ago the business of the country for weeks and months was interrupted and almost suspended by the doubts in regard to the result of the election. Possibly the weakest point in our system is that our Constitution does not adequately provide for the ascertainment and determination of the result of a Presidential election when it is close and doubtful and disputed...." Don't we know it. A prefatory paragraph explains that "Immediately after the demonstration in the Public Square had come to a close, the torchlight companies and hundreds of citizens marched to the Kennard House and tendered a serenade to President Hayes. Bank Street filled with people and music. At 11.15 o'clock several prominent Republicans appeared on the balcony accompanied by the President..." Hayes then went on to sing the praises of his successor, whom he describes as: "A man of broad, liberal, and generous views, he will look over this whole country. Every section of it will be fairly and justly dealt with. He will say to the mistaken men of the South, 'You are to be treated precisely as the citizens of my own State are to be treated. [Applause.] All that we ask of you is that you shall faithfully obey the Constitution....'

It is the same Stanley Cup the National Hockey League competes for each year now. He was the 6th Governor General of Canada., National Portrait Gallery, London has only one similar engraving of Lord Stanley where he is older and their different Lord Stanley engraving is printed later. , "There are 13 portrait lithographs by the artist (Walton) in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London. Many of the works he produced were of contemporary figures, including Francis Thomas de Grey Cowper, Seventh Earl Cowper (1834 -1905), who became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and Charlotte Anne Montagu-Douglas-Scott (née Thynne), Duchess of Buccleuch (1811-1895), who served as Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria. Some of Walton's portraits were used to illustrate books. It seems that many of his earlier works were published by the firm of Morris & Co., 392 Strand, but he later published his own works from 103, Shaftesbury Avenue. Interestingly, a lithograph by Walton of Philip William Skynner Miles in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery was published by 'Morris, Walton & Co', so it seems he may have briefly been in partnership with Morris & Co." quoted from Philippa Martin, Curator, Information and Research (Historical) UK Government Art Collection

        Cassell's Popular Natural History

London,: Cassell, Petter, Galpin, circa, 1880.. Four volumes in two, large octavo; a good copy in contemporary half green morocco. This is a beautifully, if somewhat romantically, illustrated overview of the animal kingdom, using an idiosyncratic taxonomical system. The coloured plates include Adam naming the animals, a pastoral scene overflowing with rabbits and hares and a boudoir scene redolent of angora cats. Pictures of battling animals abound, interspersed with engravings of dissected creatures and skeletons used for comparative purposes - including the head of a chimpanzee compared to the regal bust of a Greek philosopher! This "everyman encyclopedia" also includes a section on Australian animals.

Henry Shields and James MeikleIllustrated plate from Famous Clyde Yachts 1880-87Glasgow and London: Oatts & Runciman, 1888Chromolithograph19 ¼" x 22 ¼" framedThis beautiful and historically important series of famous 19th century yachts depict scenes from the Clyde River area in Scotland. This area near Glasgow has been a famous area for yachting for over a century. Sporting activities, such as riding, shooting, fishing and yachting were becoming more popular in England at this time with the growing middle and upper classes. At the same time the process of chromolithography had been developed, producing colored prints that have the look and feel of a watercolor. These developments led to a number of sporting portfolios being produced in England at the end of the late 19th century. This particular notable series of yachting scenes is based off of watercolors by Henry Shields. The volume was arranged and written by James Meikle, whom wished to highlight the notable yachts of Clyde. Each illustration features a yacht, and Meikle accompanies each yacht scene with a thorough description of that vessel.

[PAIR OF ORIGINAL WATERCOLORS OF THE CAMP OF K AND F COMPANIES OF THE NINTH U.S. INFANTRY DURING THE UTE WAR, AT SNAKE RIVER, WYOMING TERRITORY, IN 1879 - 1880]

[Wyoming. 1880].. Two watercolors, painted on the recto of two one-cent postcards, each measuring 3 x 5 inches. Description of each scene written in pencil on the verso of each card. Very minor wear. Near fine. A pair of lovely watercolors of the camp of two U.S. Infantry companies in Wyoming Territory during the Ute War in 1879-80. The watercolors show the camp of K and F companies of the Ninth Infantry near the Snake River. Based on the scenery, these must depict the southern part of Jackson's Hole, the only area which corresponds to the views shown. One shows the camp during the summer, and the other shows it in the winter. The camp was established in a valley, which is shown as lush and green in the summer scene, but barren and snow-covered in the winter scene. A note on the verso of the summer scene says that the "pictures were painted with water colors by a soldier of this command." The verso of each card contains pencil descriptions of each scene. For example, in the comments on the summer scene it is noted that "the brush back of the tents are sage brush...the timber back of the camp follows the river still to the right are mountains and hills with cedar timbers." Some of the text on the verso of the winter scene discusses the various buildings in the camp, including the cook's house and the sutler's store. The Ninth Infantry was ordered into the field as part of Army strategy during the Ute War, and established their camp along the Snake River in Wyoming Territory in November 1879. They remained there until July 1880. Original artwork from the Indian wars of the West is rare.

Report of the Stafford House South African Aid Committee. Zulu War, 1879

London: Printed by Spottiswoode & Co.,, 1880. Report of the Committee. Report by Surgeon-General J.T.C. Ross, C.I.E. Chief Commissioner. Report by Dr. G. Stoker, Assistant Commissioner. With Appendices. Octavo (245 × 180 mm) Original red skiver-backed blue cloth boards, title gilt to the spine and upper board, pale cream surface-paper endpapers. Spine slightly chipped head and tail, boards lightly rubbed, but overall very good. First and only edition. extremely uncommon, no copies on COPAC, OCLC records a single copy at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The Committee was established following a meeting in 1879 at Stafford House, St. James, the home of the duke of Sutherland, and chaired by the duke himself. The objects of the organization were 'to furnish trained nurses and hospital comforts and to supplement arrangements for promoting the convalescence of the sick and wounded in South Africa,' similar to the scheme that had been established for the assistance of troops in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-8. The party that was sent out comprised of Ross and Stoker, Bram Stoker's brother George, and seven trained nurses, both commissioners give brief accounts of the party's services in their reports, while a number of testimonials in the appendices attest to the appreciation with which their work was received; "I could not testify too highly to the excellent services rendered by these ladies [Sisters Edith King and Emma Durham] to the sick and wounded officers and men of Her Majesty's army who were treated at Ladismsith" (Memorandum from Thomas Babington, Senior Medical Officer, Ladysmith).

        Settler's Hut

1880.. Watercolour, 43 x 65 cm. signed and dated 1880 lower right, mounted and framed. This lovely watercolour is probably of a valley in the Bathurst region of New South Wales as the artist Edward Combes lived at Glanmire from the 1860's. It captures the isolation of early Australian settlement showing the simple timber slab homestead and the family's activities around it.Edward Combes (1830 -1895) was an engineer, pastoralist, politician and painter. He arrived from Wilshire England in 1851 to join the gold rush at Ballarat and Bendigo. In 1854 he returned to Paris for two years training in scientific engineering and studied water colour drawing. On his return to Australia a few years later he moved to New South Wales bought land and built Glanmire Hall with his new English wife.By 1870 he was well known throughout this central western district of New South Wales and pursued interests in both politics and art. In 1878 he was the executive commissioner at the Paris International Exhibition followed by commissioner for NSW at the Melbourne International Exhibition. He was also a member of the Legislative Council and contributed significantly to the development of colonial public works and education policy. In 1879 he directed the art section of the Garden Palace Exhibition. The Bulletin, on the 23rd. April 1881 described him as the "best amateur painter in Sydney and the wonder is that the prosy engineer can find time to indulge in the "seraph ecstasy" of a pictorial ideal". His paintings were exhibited in London galleries and at the Paris salon and he was on the committee of the NSW Academy of Art and president of the Art Society of NSW where he also exhibited his work.Unusually, Combes did not seek recognition in Australia as a painter but was highly regarded in London and Paris, so perhaps his political and artistic leadership positions dictated this distinction. The Art Gallery of New South Wales which he helped to found and to direct for over twenty years received from him a single etching of one of his paintings. A portrait bust of this outstanding nineteenth century polymath by Simonetti is in the Gallery.

TOLTEC GORGE AND TUNNEL. (SAN JUAN MOUNTAINS.) DENVER AND RIO GRANDE RAILWAY --- THE SCENIC LINE OF AMERICA [manuscript caption title]

Denver. [ca. 1880].. Mammoth-plate albumen photograph, 22 x 17 1/4 inches. Jackson's name written in the negative and printed on the mat. Very light spotting, a touch of light wear at the corners. Near fine. Matted, glazed, and framed, with calligraphic manuscript title below the photograph. Contemporary wooden frame with the initials of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway engraved in the bottom panel of the frame. A beautiful mammoth-plate albumen photograph of the mountains of New Mexico by William H. Jackson, showing a wintry scene along the route of the Denver and Rio Grand Railway. The photograph shows the narrow Toltec Gorge in the San Juan Mountains, through which the railroad ran its line into the Toltec Tunnel. Barren, rocky cliffs rise majestically in the background, while the foreground is dominated by the icy Rio de los Pinos. Jackson appears to have used a slight time exposure in taking the photograph, giving the water and spray of the river an attractive milky quality. The photograph is in a contemporary presentation frame, inscribed with the initials of the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. This photograph was taken during Jackson's Denver era when he did extensive work for the railroads of Colorado and was given his own personal railroad car from which he based his photographic excursions and operations. This photograph is an example of the work Jackson did for the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. Jackson (1843-1942) began his career in photography in 1858, working as a retouching artist in a studio in Troy, New York. In the 1860s, after serving briefly in the Union Army, he worked at several studios in Vermont before moving to Omaha, Nebraska in 1867, where he established his own studio. He worked on an extensive series of views for the Union Pacific Railroad, which earned him enough notice to be recruited by Ferdinand Hayden for the U.S. Geological Survey team. With the Survey, Jackson explored and photographed vast areas of the West, including Yellowstone and parts of Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Nevada. In 1879, his work with the Survey at an end, he set up a commercial photography studio in Denver, marketing landscape photographs of the West. Jackson stayed in Denver until 1898, when he moved to Detroit. An excellent Jackson image of a New Mexico scene.

        Lioness Hunt

Great Britain: Original Watercolor, [c.1880-1900]. Matted in Rag Board Fine Fine original watercolor on rag paper. (25.4 x 17.7 cm). Matted in Rag. Condition: Fine, with minor aged paper remains to verso corners from previous mount watermarked 1902. & Pathos notwithstanding and made all the more alluring by want of attribution, this vivid watercolor scene (a lioness in pursuit of calf in stormy forest ) was envisioned and thus executed not by a professional artist, field naturalist or explorer but by an amateur, or armchair, traveler/naturalist /painter. The drama evident yet depiction gentle, this watercolor quite plausibly was painted by a young Victorian gentlewoman who would have learned the art of nature painting, as was the custom, and who would have sought inspiration from the grand natural history color plate volumes of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This bold and vivid naturalists' display of a tapestry of dappled foliage or the crystalline translucence of disturbed water or the splendid reticulated plumage is clearly stylized by a primitive eye, yet executed with an accomplished and refined hand; the technique is learned. The resulting composition is one of dramatic charm. &
