La télescopie électronique basée sur l'emploi du sélénium. Presentation copy.

      A. J. da Silva, Porto 1880 - First Separate Publication on Television: Presentation CopyPaiva, Adriano de (1847-1907). La télescopie électrique basée sur l'emploi du sélénium. 48pp. Porto: Antonio José da Silva, 1880. 232 x 157 mm. Original printed wrappers, small chip at foot of spine; boxed. Very minor creasing, but fine otherwise. Presentation copy, inscribed "Hommage de l'auteur" on the half-title. Stamps of the Franklin Institute Memorial Library on the front wrapper, half-title and p. 19, commemorating the Institute's 1884 International Electrical Exhibition; F. I. Library reference stamp on the verso of the front wrapper.First Edition. The first separate publication on television. Rare--OCLC cites only three copies in the United States (Burndy Library, Library of Congress, California State Library), and the Karlsruhe database shows two copies in Portugal, one copy in Italy and one in France.Paiva, a professor of chemistry and physics at the Polytechnic Academy at Porto (Portugal), became interested in the possibility of transmitting visual images by wire after the demonstration of Alexander Graham Bell's telephone in Lisbon in November 1877, and after reading L. Figuier's report, published in L'Année Scientifique et Industrielle (June 1877, but read by Paiva after November 1877), of the "telectroscope," an instrument supposedly invented by Bell for the purpose of visual transmission. In February 1878 Paiva submitted a paper on a proposed telectroscope to the Portuguese journal O Instituto; the paper appeared in the March issue. Paiva's paper described an apparatus similar to that reported by Figuier, but was the first to suggest "televising" images by means of a selenium-covered plate, which would make use of selenium's peculiar electrical sensitivity to light (discovered in 1873 by Willoughby Smith) to convert light from images into electricity:The experiments we intended to make, and which we shall still attempt to realize, consisted in the employment of selenium as the sensitive plate of the camera of the telectroscope. This body possesses the remarkable property, recently discovered, of,-when interposed in an electric circuit which passes through a galvanometer,-making the needle of the latter deviate sensibly whenever a luminous ray incides on the selenium, and this deviation varies with the color of the light (p. 47).According to Lange's Histoire de la télévision (internet reference), Paiva's 1878 paper represents "la première formulation théorique de la possibilité d'utiliser le sélénium pour transmettre les images à distances" [the first theoretical formulation of the possibility of using selenium to transmit images at a distance]. In October 1879 Paiva published a paper in Commercio da Portuguez in which he presented another plan for a telectroscope, in which a selenium plate would be scanned by a metal point. As far as is known, Paiva never attempted to test his ideas experimentally. In 1880, in the interests of establishing priority, Paiva published La téléscopie électrique, which included reprints of his 1878 and 1879 papers (in both Portuguese and French), several articles on the telectroscope reprinted from scientific journals and newspapers, and an English translation of Paiva's 1878 paper made by his student William Macdonald Smith. This small pamphlet represents not only the first separate publication of Paiva's papers, but their first appearance in languages well known in the wider scientific community. This copy of La téléscopie électrique was presented by Paiva to the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, which featured the work in its 1884 International Electrical Exhibition, the first exhibition on electricity held in the United States.         My Chief and I. Or, Six Months in Natal after the Langalibalele Outbreak

London: Chapman and Hall, , 1880 [recte 1879]. By Atherton Wylde. Octavo. Original green cloth, title gilt to spine, black decoration to spine and upper board, cream surface paper endpapers. Oval mounted Woodburytype portrait frontispiece of Durnford and one other mounted photographic plate, 2 tinted lithographic plates. Cloth very slightly rubbed and rippled on the upper board, minor cracks to hinges, verso of free endpapers lightly browned, ghost of bookplate to half-title, offsetting from the frontispiece, but overall a very good copy. First edition, the novelist Anthony Trollope's copy, with his bookplate. (Trollope had made a trip to South Africa in 1877 and published his account, titled South Africa, the following year.) "[U]nder the fictitious guise of a young soldier, the authoress gives an account of six month's life and experiences with Colonel A.W. Durnford who lost his life at Isandhlwana. The writer was evidently an enthusiastic admirer of the gallant soldier" (Mendelssohn). As ODNB delicately phrases it: "She idolized him, but Durnford was still married, and there is no evidence to suggest that their relationship was ever other than platonic." Daughter of Bishop Colenso of Natal, described by SADNB as a "protagonist of the Zulu people," she completed Durnford's work History of the Zulu War and its Origins. The court of inquiry into the disaster at Isandlwana attributed most of the blame to Durnford: "His brother Lieutenant-Colonel Edward Durnford and Frances Colenso endeavoured through their writings and public lobbying to rehabilitate his reputation. They did not wholly succeed. Durnford's heroic death did much to blunt public criticism of him, but there can be little doubt that his actions contributed materially to the disaster at Isandhlwana. As Sir Theophilus Shepstone wrote of him, Durnford was 'as plucky as a lion but as imprudent as a child'" (ODNB). Uncommon, COPAC has BL, Cambridge, Bodleian & NLS only, rarely encountered in the cloth.

The Story of The Zulu Campaign

London: Sampson, Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, , 1880 . Octavo. Original mid-brown cloth, title gilt to spine, black rules and publisher's device to the boards. Folding map. Slightly rubbed, bookplate removed from the front pastedown, light browning and very light scattered foxing. A very good copy. First edition. "Commencing with a short history of the Zulus from the time of Chaka, the volume gives a résumé of their quarrels with the Boers, down to the commencement of the war between Cetywayo and the English. A vivid picture is drawn of the battles, sieges, and more important incidents of the campaign, including the death of the Prince Imperial and the capture of Cetywayo." (Mendelssohn) Despite Major Ashe's self-effacing prefatory remarks - "this little work, although written con amore and from details furnished to me by my friend Captain the Hon. E. W. Wyatt Edgell, and others, lays no claim to historical value, but assumes to be merely the impressions de voyage of those who were actors in the scenes described" - this work is generally recognised as an invaluable source for the realities of the Zulu War. Wyatt Edgell was killed at the final Battle of Ulundi.

Go and See Hardy Gillard's Great American Panorama, Illustrating the Pacific Railway from New York to San Francisco

1880 - “Go and See Hardy Gillard's Great American Panorama, Illustrating the Pacific Railway from New York to San Francisco” London: c. 1870 - 1880 Chromolithograph 19 ½" x 39 ¼" Panoramas were a popular form of entertainment in the late 19th century. Panoramas were sometimes in wagons, and moved from town to town; or large enough to be mounted in a theater, with the audience moving around the panorama scene. Popular panoramas of the time were made of the palaces of Versailles (currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art) and Civil Ware battlefields. Hardy Gillard was famous at the time for his traveling panoramas and his accompanying exuberant lectures. This flier was for Hardy Gillards 40 x 8 foot Panorama Illustrating the Pacific Railway from New York to San Francisco, the Grand Pacific Railway that was completed in 1869. A key is offered to the 38 numbered items in the large sized display, including the steamship Oceanie, farming in Nebraska, Great Salt Lake, Big Trees of California, Gold Mining in California and San Francisco.

Mini Panorama of San Francisco after Muybridge

San Francisco: A.L. Bancroft and Co. and Witteman Brothers 1880 - Louis Glaser after Eadweard James Muybridge ”Mini Panorama of San Francisco after Muybridge” San Francisco: A.L. Bancroft and Co. and Witteman Brothers, 1880 Photolithograph images on glossy paper 29" x 35" framed Views of San Francisco, a souvenir pamphlet of photolithographic plates from 1880, includes a miniature rendition of the brilliant eight foot long panoramic scene of San Francisco first published in 1877 by Eadweard Muybridge. The souvenir book was published by A.L Bancroft and Co. and by the Witteman Brothers, who owned the copyright for all Louis Glaser’s Souvenir Albums. Also included in this souvenir book are twelve architectural prints of important government and social institutions. While Louis Glaser himself remains a mystery, his innovative technique adds a varnished, illusion of depth to his work not found in lithographs. He achieved this effect through the process of using a series of stones laid down with separate shades of oil-based inks ranging from white to light sepia-grey to the darkest sepia-grey or black. Glaser’s panoramic inspiration was Eadweard Muybridge (1830-1904). Active in San Francisco by 1855, Muybridge’s early panoramic photographs document his early interest in sequential imagining. This interest would develop into the innovation of using multiple cameras to capture motion. First documented in 1878, The Horse in Motion, Muybridge’s masterwork, effectively used twenty-four cameras to show the horse’s precise movements during a full gallop. Muybridge’s original panoramic masterpiece first appeared in a short article in the San Francisco Call-Bulletin on July 13, 1877. Muybridge advertised copies of this piece for sale in the SF Chronicles Fine Arts Column for 10 dollars in gold. Muybridge's camera had a very long exposure (6 seconds), recording anything that was in motion as slightly blurred. The eight foot long panorama’s importance stems not only from its technique but also for its historical value. Visible in striking detail are the mansions of the rich and the dwellings of the poor, the churches, hotels, banks, and other features. From this work scholars are able to provide anthropological details about San Francisco’s early construction and urban life. In this way Glaser’s addition is also extremely important. His inclusion of important architectural sites offers details about San Francisco before its disastrous 1906 Earthquake. While the panorama is strikingly similar to Muybridge, Glaser adds in street details, and the labeling of prominent buildings. Glaser’s souvenir book includes details of twelve significant San Francisco landmarks: The Lotta Fountain, California Street Residences, including those of Chase Crocker and Mrs. Mark Hopkins, St. Ignatius Church and College, First Congregational Church, Golden Gate Park and Conservatory, The Cliff House and Seal Rocks, New City Hall with emphasis on the Hall of Records and McAllister Street Entrance, U.S. Branch Mint, San Francisco Stock Exchange, Nevada Block, views of Pine Street-West from Sansome Street, views of California Street-West from Kearny Street and In the Chinese Quarter-a Chinese residence and the interior of a Chinese Restaurant. The 1906 Earthquake destroyed 80 percent of San Francisco, including most of the buildings Glaser has included in his souvenir book. The Lotta Fountain, named after renowned/ notorious stage actress Lotta Crabtree, at the corners of Market, Geary, and Kearny Street, served as a meeting place following the Earthquake. Other buildings such as St. Ignatius Church, New City Hall and the Hall of Records had all been built following the Gold Rush and San Francisco’s rapid growth into a thriving metropolis. St. Ignatius had been recently completed in 1880 and the Hall of Records was finished in 1899. The U.S. Mint and Stock Exchange were also built following the Gold Rush; the Mint constructed in 1854 to standardize gold and the Stock Exchange to manage booming businesses. While most of th

        The Holy Land

David Roberts 1880 - A copy of the scarce Holy Land by David Roberts - Division IScarceBound in blue cloth with bevelled edges, gilt, and blind embossed detailUndated, c. 1880Collated CompleteDavid Roberts RA (1796 1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed prints of Egypt and the Near East produced during the 1840s from sketches made during long tours of the region (1838-1840). This work, and his large oil paintings of similar subjects, made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841. It was J. M. W. Turner, who managed to persuade Roberts to abandon scene painting and devote himself to becoming a true artist. Set sail for Egypt on 31 August 1838 with the intention of producing drawings that he could later use as the basis for the paintings and lithographs to sell to the public. Egypt was very much in vogue at this time, and travellers, collectors and lovers of antiquities were very keen to buy works depicting the great monuments of ancient Egypt or inspired by the East. Roberts arrived in Egypt in 1838, a few years after Owen Jones. He made a long tour in Egypt, Nubia, the Sinai, the Holy Land, Jordan and Lebanon. Throughout, he produced a vast collection of drawings and watercolour sketches. He was received by Muhammad Ali Pasha in Alexandria on 16 May 1839, shortly before his return to Britain. He later reproduced this scene (apparently from memory) in Volume 3 of Egypt & Nubia. This book is illustrated with the drawings of David Roberts and has historical descriptions by the Rev. George Croly. Division I covers Jerusalem and GalileeCondition: The binding is firm. There is some wear to the extremities including some bumping, rubbing and discolouration. The front inner hinge is slightly strained. Internally the plates are all remarkably clean and fresh and bright. The other pages are bright and generally clean with some very mild offsetting and a few spots to the first and last few pages. The plates are not spotted and are clean. Overall the condition of the book is very good because of the great condition of the plates. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A History of the Jetties at the Mouth of the Mississippi River

New York: John Wiley 1880 - 8vo., hard-grained brown morocco especially bound for President Ulysses S. Grant and gilt-lettered, "Genl. U. S. Grant," on the front cover; raised bands; gilt inner dentelles; edges gilt; several loosened pages, minor rubbing to extremities; enclosed in a custom-built box. First edition, with 24 full page and 10 fold-out plates. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To General U. S. Grant, Who as President of the United States approved the Jetty Act; encouraged and sustained the work; and by his great influence and authority aided in opening the Mouth of the Mississippi to the commerce of the world; this history of the Jetties is presented with the compliments and best wishes of his friend Jas B. Eads, March 1881,” on the free front endpaper ----- James B. Eads, the self-educated Missouri engineer and entrepreneur, possessed the same aptitude for river engineering as Mark Twain had revealed for river writing. The perennial problem of sandbars obstructing the Mississippi’s mouth, thereby grounding or detaining goods-laden vessels, had reduced New Orleans to a second-rate port. Eads favored installing jetties, or underwater walls, which would redirect water with force enough to scour out and deepen its own channel while depositing sediment far into the Gulf. In his 1873 annual message, Grant identified opening unfettered navigation of the Mississippi and other waterways as a government priority, which would assuage the current economic depression by providing inexpensive, reliable transportation. Work on the twin jetties commenced in June 1875. Eads’s chief assistant engineer and later resident engineer Elmer L. Corthell oversaw the project. The Civil War captain of artillery and Brown University graduate proved a jack of various trades, serving as Eads’s on-site eyes and ears, public relations spokesman, and occasional fundraiser. Corthell worked closely with an advisory commission of engineers, which Eads established. Eads’s work reinvigorated lawmakers. In June 1879 Congress created the Mississippi River Commission, a top-level agency comprised of military and civilian engineers, including Eads, charged with shaping future river policy. The following month, Eads completed the twin jetties. The chief beneficiary, New Orleans, would become the nation’s second largest port. Visiting the Crescent City in the spring of 1880, Grant inspected the jetties with Eads. At a banquet in Grant’s honor, Eads suggested that the unobstructed waves of the Mississippi seemed to mumur as they passed, “Let us have peace; let us have peace” ------- Later that year Corthell’s "A History of the Jetties at the Mouth of the Mississippi River" appeared to positive reviews. The "Nation" praised the work for presenting the history of Eads’s jetties, perhaps the single greatest engineering feat to date, in discernible prose, and for supplying readers with accessible diagrams, illustrations, charts, and maps. Eads commended Corthell for presenting a correct, careful, and thorough account of their project, from inception to completion. Corthell provided a detailed history of the Mississippi as a commercial outlet, reprinted various commission and board reports, analysed construction costs, and elucidated the step-by-step progress of the jetty construction. Future generations might be forced to rebuild Eads’s work, admitted Corthell, but “the jetty principle has been so clearly proven to be in perfect harmony with the laws of nature, that jetties will be maintained forever” ----- Eads presented Grant with this copy of "A History of the Jetties" in March 1881, bearing an inscription acknowledging his efforts in aiding to open the mouth of the Mississippi. A significant work with a most distinguished provenance [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Ueber Frauenemancipation. Plato. Arbeiterfrage. Socialismus. By J. S. Mill, translated by Freud

Fues, Leipzig 1880 - [Freud, Sigmund (1856-1939), translator] Mill, John Stuart (1806-73). Ueber Frauenemancipation. Plato. Arbeiterfrage. Socialismus. Vol. 12 of Mill's Gesammelte Werke, ed. Theodor Gomperz. 8vo. [6], 228 [2]pp. Leipzig: Fues, 1880. 192 x 124 mm. Half cloth, a little worn, minor foxing. Very good copy. First Edition of Freud's translation. Freud's only major non-scientific publication was a translation of four essays by John Stuart Mill, forming the twelfth volume of Gomperz's edition of the collected writings in German. The task "was especially congenial work, since [Freud] was specially gifted as a translator. Instead of laboriously transcribing from the foreign language, idioms and all, he would read a passage, close the book and consider how a German writer would have clothed the same thoughts--a method not very usual among translators" (Jones, Freud, I, p. 61).         PRINCIPLES Of ELECTRO-HOMOEOPATHY. A New Science Discovered by Coiunt Cesar Mattei, of Bologna.

Printing and Stereotype Offices V.-E. Gauthier and Co.,, Nice: 1880 - Frontis, "C. Mattei". 3 views of human figures, pp. 236 - 237. Electro-homoeopathy is a derivative of homeopathy that originated with Count Cesar Mattei of Bologna. The name is derived from a combination of electro (referring to an electric bio-energy content supposedly extracted from plants and of therapeutic value, rather than electricity in its conventional sense) and homeopathy (referring to an alternative medicinal philosophy developed by Samuel Hahnemann in the 18th century). Electro- homeopathy has been defined as the combination of electrical devices and homeopathy, however some contend that it is the therapeutic use of homeopathic preparations of certain "electric bio-energy" herbs that is intended by the term. The discipline is regarded as distinct from traditional homeopathy, which relies on serially diluted remedies of substances that cause similar symptoms to those as it is attempting to cure; electro-homeopathy, however, does not directly follow the "law of similars".Mattei studied natural science, anatomy, physiology, pathology, chemistry and botany. He ultimately focused on the supposed therapeutic power of 'electricity' in botanical extracts, making bold, ultimately unsupported, claims for the efficacy of his treatments, including the claim that his treatments offered a non-surgical alternative to cancer. Not surprisingly, his claims were met with skepticism by established medical authorities. Notwithstanding criticisms, including a challenge by the British medical establishment to the claimed success of cancer treatments, electro-homeopathy (or Matteism, as it was sometimes known at the time) was embraced and by the beginning of the 20th century had adherents in Germany, France, the USA and the UK; it had been the subject of approximately 100 publications and there were three journals dedicated to it.After Mattei's death, his work was built upon by Theodore Krauss (1864 - 1924) who amplified the number of available treatments, including the introduction of injectable forms of treatment, and modernized production processes.
