[France, 1880. 115 loose plates. Folio. Contemporary green portfolio with cloth spines and paper boards, secured with cloth ties. Some wear to binding. Plates mostly clean, some light wear to initial leaves. Very good. A handsome series of original handcolored drawings of mushrooms, each leaf containing several species drawn from different angles and labeled in manuscript. These beautiful watercolors depict both edible and poisonous mushrooms. Most are accompanied by a caption in pencil indicating the binomial Latin name and a reference to the mushrooms in the monograph of François Simon Cordier, LES CHAMPIGNONS DE LA FRANCE, first published in 1870. Each plate is numbered, as is each species on the plate. Species are systematically grouped together, creating a series of plates with one genus or another. All told, it is an impressive work, possibly a series of illustrations for a book, or simply the work of an avid amateur with a firm grounding in the taxonomy of mushrooms.

Photos - Signature Stamped Original Albumen Prints of Rio De Janeiro

BrBrazil, 1880. Rio de Janeiro, 1880s. Selection of eight (8) large original albumen print photographs, five (5) of which are the work of acclaimed Brazilian photographer Marc Ferrez, four of these bearing his embedded signature stamp. Photographs mounted recto and verso to four period heavy cardstock leaves, most with embedded captions in French and Portuguese. Photographs vary slightly in size, the smallest measuring approximately 20,5 x 16 cm, and the largest measuring approximately 13,5 x 19 cm. Small nicks and one tear to the three images taken by unidentified photographers, otherwise in Very Good Condition, the Ferrez photographs clean and Very Good Condition retaining strong impression. For decades Ferrez captured spectacular imagery of a rapidly changing city. In doing so, he effectively created the most important visual documentation undertaken in the country of Brazil. The present lot features some of his most iconic work, seldom found in original condition. Photographs by Marc Ferrez are as follows: ? Entrance to Guanabara Bay showing the city of Rio de Janeiro and the summit of Corcovado ? A horse-drawn tram carrying passengers over a bridge towards Corcovado Peak (some fifty years before the construction of its famous statue) ? Avenue of Royal Palms (Jardin Botanique allée des palmiers) ? A distant view of Corcovado Peak as seen from hillside on the Aqueduct Road. ? The Pont de Sylvestre (Ponte do Silvestre), most likely taken in 1884 after its construction, showing the first steam trolley descending the track to the bottom of Corcovado Mountain, possibly its very first passage. [The Corcovado Train (Trem do Corcovado), as it is called today, is a rack railway in Rio de Janeiro, travelling from Cosme Velho to the summit of the Corcovado Mountain at an altitude of 710 m. (2,329 ft.). The steam powered line was opened by Emperor Dom Pedro II on 9 October 1884, and became the first railway in Brazil to operate on electricity when it was converted in 1910. Popular for its magnificent views over the city and beaches of Rio in the late 1800s, today, the summit is also known for its statue of Christ the Redeemer which was erected in 1931.] Born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Marc Ferrez (1843-1923) is considered one of the greatest photographers of his time. His entire adult life was dedicated to the art. The son of a French sculptor, he was sent to Paris to study his craft, returning to Rio de Janeiro as an apprentice to photographer Franz Keller of Germany. In 1865, Ferrez opened his own photography studio where he specialized in landscape and natural history. His work became so popular that Emperor Dom Pedro II decided to fund his work so that he might expand his art and enterprise (The emperor was an amateur photographer and a man of extreme wealth). The Emperor also made Ferrez "photographer of the Royal Navy" owing to his superior skill of neutralizing the ships' movements. A fire destroyed his studio after only eight years in operation. Ferrez subsequently traveled to France to purchase a new camera, and upon his return to Brazil began to focus on images of slaves working on plantations, as well as rural landscapes. From 1875-76 Ferrez joined American Charles Frederick Hartt on a geological and geographic expedition to the inner province of Bahia. It was during this trip Ferrez took pictures of indigenous Botocudo tribe, and also mastered the art of panoramic views. In 1876, he entered his ethnological photographs into the Exhibition of the Century in Pennsylvania, and won a gold medal. Ferrez reestablished a studio, taught photography, and operated a photographic supply house. Throughout the 1870s and 1880s he exhibited his work in Europe and in the United States of America. In 1904 he displayed in the World Fair held in St. Louis, being the only photographer to receive a gold medal. In 1907, he opened his own picture house in Rio de Janeiro, the Pathé Cinema. Marc Ferrez's most desired works were those of Brazilian landscapes and man-made engineering seen in Brazil, such as those included here. The three remaining albumens illustrate the Pedra da Gávea (Gávea Rock) as seen from a dirt road in Tijuca Forest, a harbor view with numerous large vessels flanking the shores of a colonial city, and a large group of foreign visitors. The photographer of these views are not identified, and may also be the works of Ferrez. At the time of these photographs, Rio de Janeiro was the capital of the Empire of Brazil, a 19th-century state that roughly comprised the territories which form modern Brazil and Uruguay. It 1889 It became capital of the Republic of Brazil, and by then was already a considerable community. At the time of the 1890 census, it had more than 520,000 inhabitants, ranking it as the largest city in Brazil and one of the larger cities in the world. . Very Good.

        Moyo-no-hon [Book of Designs.]

Kyoto: , c.1880. Folio (470 × 335 mm). Original card wraps, attractively streak-patterned in terracotta, calligraphic title on front and rear wraps, old draper's label at upper margin, punch sewn at gutter margin along spine in Japanese style, wraps lined with gilt-flecked paper. 21 hand-painted designs on thick paper-stock, 6 with gilt flakes. A little rubbed, worn at the edges, slightly damped on the lower edge of the upper wrap, occasional minor paint smudging onto the facing blank, remains very good. Sumptuous design manuscript for early Meiji-era formal furisode kimonos which were often, as here, hand painted with rinpa-style designs on beautiful yuzen, dye-resist, dyed fabrics. The typically nature-based imagery includes exquisitely-rendered land- and sea-scapes, cranes in flight, a burnished old gold sunset over pines, striking flower- and leaf-based designs, which emerge as if from broken cloud against the richly coloured backgrounds. All are presented draped over a black and gold lacquer hanging rail suspended from a vermilion silk cord with heavy tassel. The manuscript was executed during the late 1870s, a time when demand for kimonos was rapidly growing, not only had the craze for all things Japanese opened up a voracious export market, but at home the relaxation of Tokugawa sumptuary laws offered vastly expanded opportunities at home. Visually highly appealing. (see Maria Mallett, Collectors' Kimonos; Boettcher, The Kimono Imagined; A History of the Kimono, Edo Period (1615-1868), Victoria & Albert Museum).

On a New Action of the Magnet on Electric Currents in the London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Fifth Series, Vol. 9 No. 55, March 1880, pp. 225-230

FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST WIDE PUBLICATION OF EDWIN HALL'S DISCOVERY OF THE HALL EFFECT, offered here as a handsome, leather bound extract; the entire March 1880 issue was extracted and is present. The Hall effect occurs when an electric current is placed in a magnetic field, causing a potential difference and a transverse field is created. By measuring the potential one can calculate the strength of the magnetic field. Hall's discovery is considered a "seminal and foundational experiment of condensed matter physics" (Armitage, Johns Hopkins University Notes on Hall Effect Experiments). Edwin Hall was an American physicist who, while, working on his doctoral thesis under Henry Rowland at Johns Hopkins, discovered the Hall Effect for which he is best known. In late 1879 and while still a graduate student, Hall published his findings in a small quarterly journal edited by some of the scientists under whom he studied at Johns Hopkins. That publication is considered the "preliminary notice" of the Hall Effect (Chien, The Hall Effect, 523). It is with his publication of the 1880 paper in the Phil Mag (offered here), that Hall's findings gained international attention. In 1878 and while at Hopkins, Hall read Maxwell's 1873 Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism. In it, Maxwell discussed the deflection of a electronic currents by a magnetic field and wrote "It must be carefully remembered that the mechanical forces which urges a conductor ... acts, not on the electronic current, but on the conductor which carries it." The statement made no sense to Hall, who wrote that it was 'contrary to the most natural supposition' (Hall, 1879); Hall then asked the opinion of his thesis advisor, Henry Rowland, who agreed that he too was confused by and skeptical of Maxwell's statement; Rowland noted that he had once tried a quick experiment but had had no success in making reliable measurements. Following ideas of his own and suggestions by Rowland, Hall then began a series of experiments that would lead to the discovery of the effect that bears his name. The 'new action' referred to in the title of his paper was Hall's recognition of "the appearance of a transverse potential difference in a conductor, fixed in position with respect to a steady magnetic field applied at right angles to the current flowing in the conductor. This 'Hall voltage' (or Hall Effect) is perpendicular to both the current and the applied field" (Leadstone, "The Discovery of the Hall Effect", Phys Educ., 14, 1979). "What made the Hall effect a surprising discovery for its time (1879) is that it occurs under steady-state conditions, meaning that the voltage across the plate persists even when the current magnetic field are constant over time. When a magnetic field varies with time, voltages are established by the mechanism of induction, and induction was well understood in the late 19th century. Observing a short voltage pulse across the plate when a magnet was brought up to it, and another one when the magnetic field was removed, would not have surprised a physicist of that era. The continuous behavior of the Hall-effect, however, presented a genuinely new phenomenon" (Hall-Effect Physics, 1). "The Hall Effect is now a routine characterization technique for electronic properties of solids. It provides an introduction to computer acquisition, magnetic probes, and transport experiments in solid which are really the bread and butter of condensed matter experiments. It is only a slight overstatement to say that all other experiments one does in condensed matter are simply higher order experiments to shed light on interesting phenomena observed in transport" (Armitage). In addition to the technique itself, currently "Hall effect sensors are readily available from a number of different manufacturers, and may be used in various sensors such as rotating speed sensors (bicycle wheels, gear-teeth, automotive speedometers, electronic ignition systems), fluid flow sensors, current sensors, and pressure sensors. Common applications are often found where a robust and contactless switch or potentiometer is required. These include: electric airsoft guns, triggers of electropneumatic paintball guns, go-cart speed controls, smart phones, and some global positioning systems" (Wikipedia). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor and Francis. Complete. Volume inclusive of 7 plates. 4to (8.75 x 5.75 inches; 219 x 144mm). Bearing faint handwritten paper label. Handsomely, solidly, and tightly bound in three quarter brown calf over marbled paper boards. Five gilt-ruled raised bands at the spine; gilt armorial devices in the compartments. Gilt-lettered red and black morocco spine labels. Clean and bright throughout. Very good condition.

Seedsman's sample book of horticulture and floriculture, including fruits, flowers, and ornamental trees.

Rochester, NY: J. W. Thompson & Co.,, [c.1880]. Octavo (223 x 149 mm when closed, 223 x 429 mm when opened). Contemporary brown grained skiver, paper label on front cover inscribed "John H. Norris", blue striped decorative cloth endleaves, brown linen hinges between the plate triptych sections, plates joined by purple cloth ribbons. 108 colour plates (97 hand-coloured theorem stencil plates, 11 chromolithographs, a number given a heightened sheen through the application of gum arabic); plate sizes 205 x 129 mm., arranged back-to-back as a triptych in rows of three mounted on white linen hinges, which when opened allows 6 plates to be viewed at a time. Light abrasions to binding, small bump on back cover, occasional offsetting, but in remarkably good condition. A scarce survival in an unusual format from one of the most important centres of the 19th century American nursery business: a seedsman's sample book, or "tree pedlar's" catalogue. The firm of J. W. Thompson & Co specialised in producing pocket size portfolios for nursery firms, or salesmen, tailoring them to the individual market in varieties of ornamental trees, fruits and flowers. This example includes large decorative conifers (including Scotch Pine and Norway Spruce) as well as deciduous varieties (including Weeping Mountain Ash and Kilmarnock Weeping Willow), many examples of fruit (three of pear, six of cherry, six plums and apricots, nine of grapes, one each of mulberry and huckleberry, rhubarb, four of strawberry, two of gooseberry, six of blackberry, raspberry and currant), and six of roses among other flowers. However, the main emphasis here is on apples, with 27 varieties illustrated. The original owner, John H. Norris was a nursery salesman who travelled the Willamette Valley of Oregon in the late 1870s and early 1880s, a period of tremendous growth in that region's apple orchards. These catalogues were expensive productions, and their owners were instructed not to allow customers (largely farmers who may have come straight from toiling in field and orchard) to handle them, and if that should happen and they should get soiled, then they were to have them trimmed and rebound. Many nurserymen would rebind their catalogues as often as every two years. This catalogue was obviously well cared for, the plates seeming to be entirely untrimmed. English-born John Wrigley Thompson (1826-1900) produced nurserymen's colour plates from 1876 until 1891, focussing initially on producing what is known as theorem stencil plates, a system that involved multiple overlays. "While they were at the forefront of modern promotional strategies like advertisements and catalogues, many nurseries also depended on the personal contact of nursery agents or 'tree pedlars' to extend horticultural interest... [and] plant peddling came into its own as a horticultural sales technique with the mid-nineteenth-century rise of commercial nurserymen... As plant peddling flourished, a new industry also developed to assist independent agents in their sales techniques. In 1858, Dellon Marcus Dewey, a Rochester bookseller, began producing brightly coloured illustrations of fruits, flowers, and ornamental trees that he called 'plates'. Taking his cue from nursery agents who used preserved fruit specimens, newspaper illustrations, or pictures clipped from horticultural magazines to illustrate their wares, Dewey reasoned that professional-looking illustrations would heighten customer interest and the pedlar's credibility" (Cheryl Lyon-Jenness, For Shade and For Comfort: Democratizing Horticulture in the Nineteenth-Century Midwest, 2004, pp. 135 & 137). "From the 1850s, as Rochester [NY] became an important centre of nursery gardening, another local industry grew up to provide illustrations of fruit, flowers, shrubs, trees, selections of which were used as catalogues by travelling 'tree peddlers' who sold plants from the nurseries they represented to farmers and gardeners in the territories they visited. The earliest illustrations of this kind were watercolours copied by local artists, but soon their production was made more efficient by the use of stencils to provide theorem paintings of flowers and fruit. Printed outlines or lithographs were also coloured by hand until chromolithographs added colour to the basic process, though even then they were often finished by hand" (Sandra Raphael, An Oak Spring Pomona, 1990, p.167). A wonderful example in terms of construction and vibrancy of colour and bearing a close relationship to the directness of American naïve art

Shogaku Jorei Shikizukai (Elementary Illustrated Etiquette Book For Young Women)

Tokyo: Sonbe Okura, 1880. Orihon (accordion-fold). Very Good. Ginko (Heisichi Adachi). 12mo. Ukiyo-e woodblock book. Series of 10 beautiful accordian-bound hand-colored woodblock diptych illustrations depicting etiquette lessons at a 'finishing' school for young Japanese women. The book contains a series of illustrated 'how to' lessons regarding talking with elders, praying, opening doors, conducting a tea ceremony, playing Go, etc. The final illustration shows women receiving their certificates after completing the training. Light wear and soiling; some of the folds have small splits; looks like two have been reinforced with tissue or transparent archival tape. Ginko, who worked between 1873 and 1908 under several studio names, is best known for his prints in the ukiyo-e style as a member of the Utagawa school. He worked with a variety of subjects including depictions of beautiful women and actors, landscapes, book illustrations, and contemporary events. He was jailed and fined in 1889 for satirically depicting Emperor Meiji as a skeleton.

Alice and Other Fairy Plays for Children

London: W. Swan Sonnenschein and Allen,, 1880. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles and vignettes to spine and front board in gilt and black, all edges gilt, cream coated endpapers. Frontispiece with tissue-guards, 7 plates, 4 pictorial initials by Mary Sibree, and music scores to accompany each play. An excellent copy. First edition of the first printed dramatic adaptation of the Alice stories, and the first version to appear without Tenniel's illustrations. The volume includes two illustrations of Alice and a picture initial of Alice by Mary Sibree. The play was "intended to be acted for children" (Cohen, p. 402) and includes scenes from both Alice books, together with musical settings for "Speak Roughly" and "Beautiful Soup". Having failed to engage Arthur Sullivan to write some songs for a musical production in 1877, Dodgson might have been expected to be protective of his copyright, but he proved amenable: in the preface the author writes, "I have to express my sincerest gratitude to Mr. Lewis Carroll for the permission to dramatize his charming story." On 6 November 1879 the author presented a copy to Dodgson, which he sent back for inscription: "I may candidly confess, it would be a much higher gratification to me to possess a copy given to me by the author, with my name written in it in her own hand". Ten years later, on 19 December 1889 he notes in his diary "Went over to Birmingham to see a performance of 'Alice' (Mrs. Freiligrath-Kroeker's version) at the High School."

The Unanimous Declaration of the Thirteen United States of America in Congress. [Benjamin Tyler-Giles Lithograph printing of the Declaration of Independence]

Durham and New York: The Giles Lithographic and Liberty Printing Co. for Mess. W. Duke, Sons & Company, 1880. Broadside. Very Good. Lithographic print on faux parchment. Approximately 20.5" x 27". Original metal trim still present at top and bottom. Minor edge wear and light wrinkling. Three short marginal tears, mended on verso with what appears to be tissue or archival tape. This reprint of the Declaration of Independence is of the famous facsimile originally published by Benjamin Owen Tyler in 1818. Tyler's documents were the first to produce the Declaration in script and included exceptionally realistic signatures of the signers. "The publisher designed and executed the ornamental writing, and has been particular to copy the Facsimiles exact, and has also observed the same punctuation, and copied every Capital as in the original. . . . [The signatures] are curiously exact imitations, so much so that it would be difficult if not impossible for the closest scrutiny to distinguish them . . . from the original." (Bidwell, #2, pp. 286-287) As also noted by Bidwell (see the note after the entry on p. 287), Giles lithographs are facsimiles of Tyler's work. These were produced as premiums for Duke tobacco products and could only be obtained by redeeming certificates from 75 packets of Duke products. As such, it is likely that few of these lithographs remain, and they may possibly be as scarce as the Tyler originals. As of 2015, no examples are listed in OCLC, and Bidwell found only one example at the New York Public Library as well as a photostat reproduction at the American Antiquarian Society. Between ABPC, the Rare Book Hub, and Worthpoint, only two examples are shown as having been sold at auction; one for $1,024 in 2009 and one for $7,995 in 2011.

        The Works of Edward Bulwer-Lytton

London: G. Routledge and Co. 1880 - London: G. Routledge and Co, not dated, 1880’s. Very Good. The works of Edward Bulwer-Lytton, complete in twenty volumes. The set consists of The Last of the Barons, The Caxtons, Zenoni, The Disowned, The Last Days of Pompeii, Eugene Aram, Devereux, Paul Clifford, Godolphin, Ernest Maltravers (in two volumes), My Novel (in two volumes), Pilgrims of the Rhine, Lucretia, Renzi, Harold, Leila, Night and Morning and Pelham. Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton PC (25 May 1803 18 January 1873), was an English politician, poet, playwright, and novelist. He was immensely popular with the reading public and wrote a stream of bestselling dime-novels which earned him a considerable fortune. He coined several phrases that would become clichés, especially the great unwashed, pursuit of the almighty dollar, the pen is mightier than the sword, as well as the famous opening line “It was a dark and stormy night”. Pelham brought him public acclaim and established his reputation as a wit and dandy. Its intricate plot and humorous, intimate portrayal of pre-Victorian dandyism kept gossips busy trying to associate public figures with characters in the book. 27. April 1879. (Lieferungstitel).

Perles, Wien 1880 - Wien, Perles 1880. Quer-Großfolio (68 x 37,5 cm). Titelblatt, [4] Bl. Text, [46] Bl. Tafeln mit montierten Original-Chromolithographien. Illustrierte rote Original-Ganzleinenmappe. Einband etwas fleckig. Illustrierte rote Original-Ganzleinenmappe.
