THE SPECIMEN BOOK OF FRUITS, FLOWERS AND ORNAMENTAL TREES. CAREFULLY DRAWN AND COLORED FROM NATURE FOR THE USE OF NURSERYMEN

Rochester, N.Y.: M. Brunswick & Co., 1880. 89 chromolithographed and pochoir plates, plus lithographed titlepage, each approximately 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. Oblong octavo. Original black morocco, gilt and blind tooled. Owners' names gilt lettered on front cover. Binding somewhat rubbed, with patches of discoloration. Pencil ownership inscription on titlepage. Light tanning, occasional offsetting from plates. Very good. An extensive salesman's nursery specimen book for the McCabe Bros., located in North Bangor, Maine, containing eighty-nine pochoir and chromolithograpic color plates. The book contains eleven examples of apples and thirteen types of roses. Also included are examples of plums, bears, several varieties of berry, as well as as twenty- five types of other flowers and thirteen kinds of trees. "Mina (or Minnie) Brunswick (1849-1925) is listed in the Rochester city directories as a producer of fruit plates or nurserymen's plates from 1888 through 1920. Her first advertisement, in the 1889 directory, reads in part: 'M. Brunswick & Co., (Formerly with D.M. Dewey), Manufacturers of Hand Painted Fruit and Ornamental Plates. All of Mr. Dewey's artists have been retained by us'...Brunswick, by the 1910s, appears to have been the last producer of hand-painted (stenciled) plates in Rochester" - Kabelac. Nearly all the plates include the Brunswick imprint, which suggests that this album was sold ready-made. The more usual practice was for the salesmen to make up his sample-book from individual plates from a number of different publishers.         Vollständige Reihe der Schubert’schen naturgeschichtlichen Tafelwerke (zur Zoologie, Botanik, Geologie & Paläontologie sowie Humanbiologie) aus dem Verlag Schreibers. Zusammen 4 Bände.

Esslingen, ohne Jahr, aber um 1880. - Folio. Illustiertes Org.-Ganz- bzw. Moritz Willkomm (Botanik) oder G. A. Kenngott (Mineralogie). 4000 g

Spine cloth is loosening, chipped and missing 1/2" at base. Boards rubbed and loosening. Text block remains tight. Ex- library copy from New York Academy of Sciences. No atlas.         Photographs - (1) View of Kangaroo Point is Taken By Renowned Photographer Albert Lomer and (1) Street View of Toowoomba is

Australia, 1880. Two original photographs from Queensland in Australia, taken circa 1882, both with embedded captions, mounted one recto and one verso to the same cardstock mount. The Kangaroo Point photograph was taken by Australia's photographer and colourist Albert Lomer whose studio name appears as the embedded caption. This photograph measures approximately 20,5 x 14 cm, being an albumen print with some age-toning, otherwise in very good condition. The Toowoomba photograph is a gelatin silver print photograph measuring approximately 19,5 x 15 cm, with indication of some creasing, otherwise in very good condition. The cardstock to which both photographs are mounted measures 21 x 15 cm. A very rare albumen print photograph of Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, taken by renowned photographer Albert Lomer around 1882, shows some of the foremost commercial buildings, including a shoreside timber yard, as well as the expanse of residences developing. This view is captured from the north side of the Brisbane River looking south, and likens a similar photograph from a slightly different spot, which Lomer may have taken the same day while creating his panoramic view of Brisbane River from Bowen Terrace, the panorama being composed of five views. [The John Oxley Library, in the State Library of Queensland, holds the original panorama, found in the Lomer Photograph Album dating to 1884.] This photograph bears the embedded stamp "Lomer & Cie". Albert Lomer was an important commercial photographer, active in Australia. He opened the first photographic studio in Brisbane in 1862, and worked from a variety of studio addresses in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Queensland from 1862 to 1900. He opened a studio at Sydney in partnership with Andrew Chandler, advertising that they were from W. Davies & Co. of Melbourne, where both had presumably trained. Their studio, The London Photographic Company, was at 419 George Street. By February 1867 Lomer was operating the business alone. In 1872-73 Lomer was working at 57 Bourke Street in Melbourne. He then established a very successful Brisbane studio at 158 Queen Street which lasted from 1874 until 1905, although he apparently no longer ran it after 1880. Branch studios were opened in various parts of the colony, including the Lomer studio at Mackay in 1887 (managed by J.P. Kemp), a studio at Toowoomba (1893-96) and one at Ipswich (1898-99). Lomer was again in Sydney in 1880-95. Several photographs from Lomer's Brisbane studio have survived, although mainly carte-de-visite portraits. Kangaroo Point is one of the earliest suburbs settled in Brisbane and subsequently, is one of Brisbane's oldest suburbs, rich in history. In 1823, explorer John Oxley described Kangaroo Point as a "jungle, fringed with mangroves with the higher land open forest, covered with grass". During the time of the subsequent convict settlement (1825-1841), Kangaroo Point was cleared and used for cultivation of crops. Subsequently, the area was opened up for free settlement, the first land sales taking place on 13 December 1843. Among the early purchasers was Captain J.C.Wickham, the Police Magistrate. Surveyor James Warner built the first house at Kangaroo Point in 1844. Kangaroo Point's first school was opened in 1861 by the Church of England, which came under the control of the Board of Education in 1867. In 1887, the Yungaba Immigration Centre was built on Main Street at Kangaroo Point to replace the facilities on William Street. The photograph mounted to verso is captioned 'Street View Toowoomba' and shows early residences flanking a wide dirt and gravel road. Toowoomba, known as the "Garden City", is situated in the Darling Downs region of Queensland, approximately 130 km west of Brisbane. Today being the sixth largest city in Queensland, this nostalgic photograph captures a tranquil setting during Toowoomba's early period of development. Toowoomba's colonial history traces back to 1816 when English botanist and explorer Allan Cunningham arrived in Australia from Brazil, and, subsequently in June 1827 discovered 4 million acres of rich farming and grazing land, which became known as the Darling Downs. The first settlers in the Downs began arriving in the 1840s, initially founding the township of Drayton, which is now an outer suburb. By the end of the 1840s Drayton had grown to the point where it had its own newspaper, general store, trading post and the Royal Bull's Head Inn, which was built by William Horton and still stands today. Land for the town was first officially surveyed in 1849, then again in 1853. By 1858 Toowoomba had a population of 700, three hotels and many stores. Land was selling at £4 per acre in 1850, and within ten years increased to £150 per acre. After further growth and the addition of a second township, in 1860 it was declared a municipality by Governor Bowen. The first council elections were held the following year, with William Henry Groom voted mayor (he was also elected to parliament in 1862). A gaol was built in 1864. A rail link to Ipswich, and hence Brisbane, opened in 1867, bringing with it commercial development. Toowoomba would be declared a city in 1904, approximately eight to ten years after the photograph was taken. [The Toowoomba Historical Society holds some photographs from its formative years.] . Very Good.

Die Krankheiten der Brustdrüsen. Signed copy

Stuttgart: Ferdinand Enke, 1880. Billroth, [Christian Albert] Theodor (1829-94). Die Krankheiten der Brustdrüsen. Deutsche Chirurgie, Lieferung 41. x, [2], 168pp. 8 chromolithograph plates, text illustrations. Stuttgart: Ferdinand Enke, 1880. 256 x 168 mm. Original printed wrappers, tears in spine expertly repaired, spine and corners a bit darkened, edges a bit frayed; preserved in a cloth drop-back box. Minor foxing in the plates, but very good. With Billroth’s autograph signature on the title: “Dr. Th. Billroth / Wien April 1880.” First Edition of Billroth’s classic monograph on breast cancer and other diseases of the mammary glands. Signed copies of Billroth’s works are rare; this is the first one we have handled in our five decades in the trade. Die Krankheiten der Brustdrüsen appears to be an expanded version of Billroth’s Die Krankheiten der weiblichen Brustdrüsen [Diseases of the female mammary glands], which was published as Vol. III, part 10 of Handbuch der Frauenkrankheiten (1880); the expanded Krankheiten der Brustdrüsen adds a final chapter on male breast cancer. The work is also significant in the history of plastic and reconstructive surgery; see Gabka & Vaubel, Plastic Surgery Past and Present, p. 136. Billroth, professor of surgery at Zürich and Vienna, was the founder of the Vienna School of Surgery. He has also been called the founder of modern abdominal surgery, and he was one of the first to introduce antisepsis into the Continental operating room. He was instrumental in establishing the first modern school of thought in surgery, using statistical methods and analyzing his failures as well as his successes. Billroth’s disciples helped to spread his teachings throughout Europe, and his methods of surgical education had a great influence on William Halsted’s pioneering surgical residency program at Johns Hopkins.       1880. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. 3 integral pages. 4 stanzas, signed "Arrigo Boito" at the conclusion and identified "Ero e Leandro / Atto I. scena 4a. " On the facing page, Boito has dedicated the aria to "la gentile Signorina Elena Barbaroux," and has initialled and dated "Milano 31. Marzo. 87." Usual folds, mounting traces to verso, else fine. Autograph manuscript of the aria text "Conchiglia rosea del patrio lido," from the celebrated librettist's "Ero e Leandro." Boito is remembered chiefly for his libretti for Ponchielli (La Gioconda) and Verdi (Otello and Falstaff), and for his own Mefistofele.

        MONOGRAPH OF THE PITTIDAE

London: Published by the Author, 1880-1. FIRST AND ONLY EDITIONS. 565 x 390 mm. (22 1/4 x 15 3/8"). Part I with text and plates; part II with text only (all published). Two parts in one volume. Part II edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe. FIRST AND ONLY EDITIONS. Pleasing three-quarter green crushed morocco over green cloth boards, raised bands, spine compartments with gilt lettering and tools. WITH 10 BEAUTIFUL HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES. With original blue upper wrapper to each part bound in. Fine Bird Books, p. 102; Zimmer, p. 263. Lower cover with a few negligible scratches and a light stain or two, original wrappers with a faint crease down the middle, plates with just a touch of toning around the edges, but A REALLY EXCELLENT COPY, ENTIRELY FRESH AND CLEAN. This brief but very pleasing work was John Gould's final publication before his death in 1881. It was originally conceived as a four-part series, but only Part I was completed in its entirety; Part II, containing just text, was published shortly after Gould's death by his friend and fellow ornithologist, R. Bowdler Sharpe, who also acted as editor. According to the nota bene on the wrapper for Part I, the illustrations found here were "principally taken from the Author's works on 'Birds of Asia,' 'Australia,' and 'New Guinea.'" As these sources suggest, the pittidae, a family of small, tropical birds, are found almost entirely in the aforementioned regions. The males of the species are known to possess a great range of colorful plumage--from the somber Black Ground-Thrush to the jewel-like and aptly named Necklaced Pitta--an attribute played up to great effect in the excellent coloring of the plates. The hand-colored lithographs seen here, and in most of Gould's work from the 1830's on, were a special point of pride for the scientist. According to DNB, "the design and natural arrangement of the birds on the plates was due to the genius of John Gould, and a Gould plate has a distinctive beauty and quality." Although he did not create the actual lithographs himself, he did create preliminary sketches upon which the plates were ultimately based. He was also intimately involved with the publication process from start to finish, including acting as agent and distributor of his own work. As a scientist, Gould (1804-81) is perhaps the most recognizable name in ornithology after Audubon. This brief but very pleasing work was John Gould's final publication before his death in 1881.
